I
decided that I could be a fair-weather
football fan this fall.
My son played his senior season last
year, and as a parent you don’t want to
miss any of that. Cold.
Wind. Rain. Snow.
(Shudder) We’ll sit
through just about
anything when our
child is out on the
field. But this year
with no one playing,
I said I was only going
to games in the
early season, while the
weather was still nice.

Friday night
football from the sidelines,
so I always sit with other moms in the
stands to watch the games. When it began
to rain late Friday afternoon Jeff assumed I
was going to stay home. But about an hour
before kickoff it seemed the rain was letting
up, and the weather report I listened to said
skies were clearing. I found myself texting
a friend to see if she was still going to the
game. “I am if you are,” she replied, so the
plan was set.
As I was ready to leave my house for the
three-block walk to the football field, it began
to sprinkle. I grabbed an umbrella “just
in case.”
Good thing. It rained nearly the entire
game. That was the bad news. The good
news (sort of) is that the rain kept most
people away, so there was plenty of extra
space in the bleachers around me and I
didn’t have to be concerned about my umbrella
dripping on anyone sitting near me.
My feet were a different matter. That’s
where all the rain water from the umbrella
ended up, and they were soaked before half
Iowa time. Information
