The purpose of the Gala dinner was to have the different stakeholders share thoughts & ideas
to unearth grassroots football and push for youth development in the JTG region.
This prompted interests from scouts for the bravery of these youngsters who played
against players far older than them.
Kelebogile trust and kathu solar park made the opportunity available for the boys together
with Arthur Zwane to Kaizer Chiefs FC Development academy at the world renowned talent
breeder Naturena in Johannesburg to familiarize themselves with the environment and
conditions of the academy. The kids returned back to kathu on 23rd July 2017.
Zwane who assisted to scout brand new flair from the youth.
Lethal striker Linchon Heny Brendell (14) from Siyathemba and untouchable right
winger Bernardo Edward April (12) from Deben showed breathtaking performance
which left ex Chiefs players, Fabian McCarthy, Stanton Fredericks and Arthur Zwane
with their mouths open. On 16 July the boys were accompanied by Kelebogile Trust
employees and Arthur Zwane to Kaizer Chiefs Development academy in Johannesburg
Maria Fredericks (55) from Deben got her house re-built after it was gobbled up by a horrific
inferno that was caused by a candle three years ago. Fortunately there were no fatal injuries
reported on that dreadful night. Jesmien Wapad and Daleen Botha from Kathu Solar Park
were the good Samaritans to Gogo Fredericks.
Their mission to make over the house took them over two years before they could be able to
bring on board relevant stakeholders to assist with the job. On Mandela day they spent their
67 minutes as part of reconstructing Gogo’s house. The home was refurbished with roofing,
windows, painting, rebuilt and new furniture and food parcels.
The occasion was made possible by Kathu Solar Park in association with Kelebogile Trust
under supervision of project engineer, Mr Mark Janick, furniture shops and building material
shops. Members of the community and ward councillor Abel Booysen joined forces with the
management of Kathu Solar Park to speed up the reconstruc-tion of the house.
Gogo Fredericks says, she is very excited to have her home rebuilt and she wishes her
husband was there to witness that special moment with her. “It was a very painful instant to
see my house being eaten by raging flames while I was standing there helplessly.
I wholeheartedly like to thank the people who made
contributions to renovate my home and make sure I live a
better life like every-one”, says a teary Maria.
The renovation was part of the 67 minutes of Nelson Mandela
day.

Kathu Solar Park is currently under construction phase of developing, a first of its kind,
concentrated solar power (CSP) plant in the JTG region- that being a 100MW CSP solar plant.
•The CSP solar plant will produce enough energy to power 179,000 South African homes. The
project will also store 4.5hours of renewable solar energy into the ESKOM national grid after
sundown.
•The construction phase at present, after recently passing the 50% completion stage, has
already worked 1.75million man hours up to this stage.
•40% of job opportunities have been allocated to the locals and 42.57% of materials are local
South African materials.
•As KSP sets it’s sights on the continuous operations phase beginning late 2018, the solar CSP
plant hopes to get more locals involved by providing a uniques CSP training program
When I completed my BCom degree at Wits,
majoring in accounting and finance, I would
never have believed it if anyone told me then
that somewhere along the way I would join a
firm that specialises in an industry that was so
unpopular.
I work on two Sener projects: the Kathu
project, which is in its construction stage; and
the Bokpoort project, which is in its operation
and maintenance stage, where we are
basically responsible for the warranty period.
As part of the procurement team, in the
position of procurement officer, my
specialities are sourcing and contracting. I am
permanently based onsite in the Northern
Cape.
My journey with Sener started in January
2016, but management had already showed
interest in me when I joined the Bokpoort
Project under Crowie Concessions in 2013,
which was one of the JV partners. I was also
procurement officer there and the only
woman in our team. A feather in my cap was
that I carried our department onsite
throughout the commissioning phase to hand
over under difficult circumstances.
It has been quite an exhilarating experience
to be part of a team of well-experienced
professionals, exploring technology that is
new to our country. I have always been interested
in and curious about construction,
but the idea of being part of a solar-powered
plant pushed me to want to enter not
only construction, but the renewable energy
sector.
However, like everything else, there was a
downside to working on a project,
especially the Bokpoort project, as it was in
a very remote area. This has meant spending
long stretches of time away from my family,
especially from my little daughter. Every
weekend that I went home, I would find she
had learnt a new word, but I find comfort in
the fact that I helping to level the playing
field for her and her friends one day.
There have been so many positives working
in solar construction. My work has helped me
to grow and my exposure to the engineering
and construction industry, with a focus on
renewable energy, has opened many doors
for me.
To make it in the construction industry, you
have to be brave and have courage and stand
out. I like to think that I am one of the most
experienced procurement officers in the
country with CSP experience. In the end, it
was all worth it.
officer on the Sener Kathu Solar Park project
