mokenamessenger.com news the Mokena Messenger | September 14, 2017 | 11 Backup on the way Mokena PD gets OK to hire more officers T.J. Kremer III, Editor Mokena Police Department was given the go-ahead by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners to hire two police officers. During its Sept. 5 meeting, the board and police Chief Steven Vaccaro discussed the process of background investigations for eligible candidates who successfully completed the Comprehensive Options for Police Selection Testing Service. The background checks are expect to take about a month to a month and a half, according to Vaccaro, because MPD wants to be able to thoroughly screen the candidates. Once the background checks are completed, two candidates will be chosen to begin training in January at the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn. Candidates will undergo 540 training hours over 12- 14 weeks at SLEA, Vaccaro said. After successful completion of SLEA, the two candidates will then go through MPD’s own field training, where the officers will be paired with MPD’s certified trainers for 14 weeks before the new officers will be allowed to start patrols on their own. That final step is expected to be completed by June or July of 2018, Vaccaro said. Harvey relief headed from Mokena AGS, partners will ship truckload of bottled water to Houston Food Bank Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor After Hurricane Harvey left millions of people in Texas without homes, Holly Seidel knew she wanted to do something to help. Seidel is the inside sales and marketing manager at Architectural Grilles and Sunshades, Inc. in Mokena where she said she brought the idea to fill a truck with water bottles and have them shipped to the Houston area. She said AGS Owner John Trainor was on board right away. “I thought it was a great idea,” Trainor said, and added that most of the company’s 30 employees were happy to pitch in. “I didn’t know how the participation would be with the employees, and I was really happy [with] the participation we did get.” With a matching donation, he said it was a way for him to motivate his employees and “[help] out people who need it.” Trainor said they have people on staff with family in the Houston area as well as clients who were affected by the storm that made landfall in Texas as a category 4 hurricane on Aug. 25. The storm displaced millions of people and caused damages estimated to be as high as $180 billion. Trainor offered to speak with Matt Shapiro from Pittco and John Andriotti from Trek Freight, two companies AGS works closely with on a day-to-day basis, and they both decided to chip in respectively for water bottle costs and shipping costs. One of the biggest challenges was not finding the money for the water or the shipping, which both Pittco Trek Freight Services assisted with, but Seidel said it was rather with finding somewhere for the water to go. In all, the group was able to raise $2,500, which amounts to 17 pallets of water. The shipment will fill an entire tractor-trailer. “Everybody has been really generous and kind,” Sweat for vets, service dogs CrossFit Mokena partners with 1Pet1Vet for annual charity event T.J. Kremer III, Editor CrossFit Mokena is partnering with 1Pet1Vet, which trains service dogs for soldiers with PTSD and/or disabilities, as part of CrossFit Mokena’s annual anniversary charity event. The charity event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 17, from 8:30 a.m.-noon at 8421 W. 191st St., Mokena. Christie Neighbors, coowner of Crossfit Mokena with her husband Jason, said preregistration for workouts for adults is at about 100 people. In addition to the workouts, a silent auction will be held to collect additional money for the 1Pet1Vet charity. Winners do not need to be present to win items they bid on, Neighbors said. Anyone interested in attending the event is welcome and can choose not to work out, Neighbors said. There will also be a jug for donations, and for every dollar donated the staff of CrossFit will do one burpee, an exercise that starts from a standing position into a squat, then plank, then back into a squat and then a jump before starting over again. Healthy Nation Catering of Frankfort will be on hand as the food vendor for the event, Neighbors said. Plates will be available for $10 each, with $1.50 of each sale going to 1Pet1Vet. The event will start with a children’s workout session — which is free for children ages 6-11 — for the first half hour, followed by a brief break to acknowledge sponsors, make announcements and the playing of the national anthem, Neighbors said. Veterans and service dogs will be on site for the event. Last year, CrossFit Mokena raised more than $1,300 for Pink Heals, a national charity organization that provides home visits to show individuals that they are loved, cherished and important to others, according to its website. Neighbors said the goal this year is to raise more than $2,000 for 1Pet1Vet. Seidel said. “Between the three [companies], we have everything covered.” Seidel had originally contacted Catholic Charities in the Houston Area, as suggested by Trainor, but their facility didn’t have enough room for all the water. “I was shocked at how difficult it is to get water down to where people need it and people to accept it,” Seidel said. “I’m in shock over that.” To put 17 pallets of water into perspective: there are 60 cases of water bottles per pallet and 35 water bottles per case. That makes for a total of 35,700, 16.9-ounce water bottles. The water is now on its way the Houston Food Bank, but the shipment was previously delayed as Andriotti waited on final shipping logistics from the food bank before the truck could begin the more than 1,050 mile journey from Mokena to Houston. Meijer in Mokena gave the group a reduced price for the water, and Seidel said they were flexible with storing the water until Monday when the water was finally packed up and sent on its way. Seidel said she contacted many stores in the area and Meijer was the only one willing to come down on the price for the cause. “There’s not a sale going on anymore at Meijer, but they’re still going to go with the price they offered us, which I think is super nice,” Seidel said.
