HELPFUL TIPS | Colour Coding 

CleanWorks believe in making cleaning easier and safer through the creation of great products. 

One way this has been achieved is by ensuring our janitorial and wiping products follow 

the Recommended Colour Chart for the Cleaning Industry devised by the British Institute 

of Cleaning Science (BICSc). 

To prevent cross-contamination, we have colour coded products which should be assigned 

to particular designated cleaning areas, hence stopping the transfer of bacteria through 

use in multiple areas. You wouldn’t want to use the same cloth to wipe the surfaces 

of a washroom and then a kitchen. 

RED 

- Assigned to areas such as urinals, toilets and washroom floors 

- High-risk of bacterial contamination from these areas 

YELLOW 

- Assigned to all other washroom surfaces including sinks, 

mirrors, cubicles, tiled walls, glass and metal 

- Two washroom colour codes stop the use of the same 

cleaning products on toilets & sinks 

GREEN 

- Assigned to food and drinks preparation areas including kitchens 

and bar areas, but also other food processing areas such as factories 

- Uncooked meat and fish pose the highest risk of contamination 

BLUE 

- Assigned to low-risk areas such as classroom, office desktops, 

window ledges, hallways and also for general dusting and polishing 

- Can be used across a variety of surfaces due to the lower degree 

of bacterial contamination

HELPFUL TIPS | Microfibre Cloths 


These clever, yet highly hygienic cloths consist of tiny fibres which attach themselves easily 

to dirt particles. When cleaning, this means that dirt doesn’t get missed and detergent and 

water aren’t left behind on a surface. 

The fabric microfibre was first introduced in 1970 by Toray Industries scientist Dr. Miyoshi Okamoto, 

and since then, the cleaning industry has been revolutionised. Incredibly, each microfibre is up 

to 100 times finer than a human hair! With around 200,000 fibres in one square inch of a typical 

microfibre cloth. This means there is an extensive surface area for just one cloth to absorb liquid 

or capture dust and dirt. 

How Do You Use A Microfibre Cloth? 

One of the main benefits, especially if you are thinking about becoming greener in the 

workplace, is that they work well without the use of cleaning chemicals. 

There is no need to add lots of water and detergents like you would with a traditional 

cleaning cloth. In fact, using water in some cases may actually make the cloth less effective 

if being used for dusting! 

They are extremely versatile and can be used in almost any room or environment. Whether it’s 

cleaning worktops and cookers in the kitchen, polishing chrome faucets, taps or showerheads or 

using a microfibre mop for washing the floors with less water residue. Simply put, they can be used 

to clean almost any hard surface! 

How Do You Clean A Microfibre Cloth? 

Microfibre cloths can be washed time and time again, meaning that they are kinder 

to environment compared to using a disposable cloth. They should be washed after use 

by using hot water and a detergent. However, do not use fabric conditioner, as this can 

clog the fibres in the cloth and make it ineffective.
