TMEA STATE EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CHAIR’S MESSAGE John Womack It is my belief that music technology is an absolute essential for students in our classrooms. With the short attention span that many students have – we must find new and interesting ways to engage them. When we meet students where they are, I find that they are much more likely to do the task at hand. THE ONLY CONSTANT IS CHANGE. Just as technology rapidly moves forward and surprises us, people’s lives do the same. Lisa Leopold is a wonderful educator who has a passion for music technology. At the end of the year, she moved out of the country and could no longer fill the role of State Technology Chair. I want to thank her for her time and hard work on the board and wish her well on her next journey. I also wanted to thank her for making the transition for me as painless as possible. She was quick to get me information as I became oriented with the website and launching the conference and hotel registration. I’m excited and honored to be a part of the TMEA board as the new State Technology Chair and hope that I can continue the great work that Lisa has done. It is my belief that music technology is an absolute essential for students in our classrooms. With the short attention span that many students have – we must find new and interesting ways to engage them. When we meet students where they are, I find that they are much more likely to do the task at hand. I’ve never seen students more interested in something as simple as a tuner than when it is on their phones making a little smiley at them as they get that perfect pitch! As you know, the state conference is quickly approaching. I’m excited this year about the excellent sessions that will be given on music technology. As the schedule starts to come out, I would encourage you to look through the technology sessions that are available. The topics include advanced recording software, how to record your ensembles, iPads and what to do with them, how to use the technology you probably already have to make your ensemble better, and so much more! There is something for everyone from beginners to advanced technology users to learn. As in years past, we are partnering with TI:ME (Technology Institute for Music Educators) and with Romeo Music to make all this possible. The technology sessions will all be in one room and will feature a Technology Boutique by Romeo Music. This will include all sorts of great gear that you can look at and try out and then hopefully utilize in your classroom! I’m looking forward to seeing all of you in April. Being able to see friends and colleagues, hear great music, and to see some inspiring sessions on music education can spark something inside. I always leave excited about going to teach a new concept or tell students a new way to do something. I hope that these sessions will be able to do that for you and your students too.
