Just Trade collaborates with artisans around the world to create stylish, desirable 

handmade jewellery and accessories. Founded in 2006 by jewellery designer Laura Cave, 

Just Trade is a collaborative, innovative brand. 

Born out of first hand contact with real people in the developing world and the recognition 

that in order for small fair trade projects to be sustainable, they need a long-term route 

to market for their goods. Just Trade now works with eight groups of artisans in Peru, 

Ecuador, India and Vietnam.

The artisans in Peru specialise in making beautifully crocheted silver jewellery, 

crocheted cotton brooches, and contemporary brass jewellery. 

The project is based in four areas of Peru; two in the shanty towns in Lima (La 

Tablada and California) and two provincial cities (Ayacucho and Cajamarca).

PERU: 

MEET THE ARTISANS 

Hope Jewellery (formerly the Zoe 

Project) is our longest running 

partnership. We have been working 

with them since 2006, when Laura 

came across the group whilst 

volunteering for another fair trade 

jewellery project in Lima, Peru. 

In Peru there is a lack of part time, 

fairly paid work, especially for women 

living in the sprawling shanty towns of 

Lima. The options are either working 

as a housekeeper in the wealthy part 

of town or in a textile factory; both 

of which involve lengthy travel, long 

hours and in many cases, leaving 

their children unattended. Over the 

last eleven years, Just Trade have 

worked hand in hand with Hope 

Jewellery to provide part time, fairly 

paid work that the women can do 

from home, or close to home. This 

has made a significant difference to 

their household incomes, meaning 

the women have been able to 

improve their homes, pay for medical 

treatment and educate their children, 

as well as spend more time with their 

families. 

The project is now based in four areas 

of Peru, two in the shanty towns in 

Lima (La Tablada and California) and 

two provincial cities (Ayacucho and 

Cajamarca). We are now providing 

regular work for more than thirty 

women.

INDIA 

Just Trade works with the Flowering Desert Project, based in a rural community 

in Tamil Nadu, Southern India, where they would otherwise have limited means 

of earning a regular income. The ladies work in a safe, supportive environment 

and receive a fair wage. This project offers a way for the women to increase 

their skills and future work possibilities, often bringing them status within their 

community for the first time.

Just Trade works with the Flowering Desert project, based in a rural commun 

in Tamil Nadu, Southern India. The women in this project either live on site 

in the Mahalir Aran Trust (MAT) safe house, a refuge for vulnerable women 

and children, or they come from the surrounding rural community where work 

opportunities are limited. 

PRODUCTION PROCESS

management and help with educating their children is available.

In 2010, Grace and Lottie, two design 

graduates who were working with 

Just Trade, went to Southern India 

to visit the Flowering Desert Project 

after being introduced through VIA 

Design. The ladies in the project 

were all trained in tailoring, but were 

struggling to find enough regular 

work and hindered by intermittent 

power supply. We offered training 

in basic jewellery techniques using 

hand tools, therefore not requiring a 

reliable electricity source. The ladies 

picked up the techniques quickly, 

including beading, cutting, polishing 

and hammering, which they have now 

perfected. 

Around half of the women who 

work in the production unit live in 

the Mahalir Aran Trust (MAT) safe 

house on site, which is a refuge for 

vulnerable women and children. The 

rest of the women come from the 

surrounding rural community where 

work opportunities are limited to 

unpredictable and irregular work in 

agriculture.

In 2010, after seeing the success 

of Just Trade’s collaboration with 

artisans in Peru, Laura was contacted 

by the Ecuadorian embassy to meet 

with fair trade producers in Ecuador. 

Just Trade are now working with five 

workshops, which each specialise in a 

different traditional technique using 

either hand carved tagua or ceramic 

components. 

Whilst Ecuador has many highly 

skilled artisans, they have seen global 

exports decrease over recent years 

as they are competing against the 

cheaper work force in Asia, where the 

cost of living is significantly lower. As 

a result, artisans compete over the 

local tourist market where they are 

often exploited by middle men who 

take advantage of the over supply 

of handicraft products and demand 

increasingly lower prices.

SKILLS & TECHNIQUES 

VIETNAM 

The Thai group, based in Mai Chau, are the third largest ethnic group in 

Vietnam. Their ancestors migrated to Vietnam thousands of years ago and 

settled mainly in the Northwestern regions. They have a long, rich culture of 

textile weaving, using cotton and silk on traditional manual table looms. 

This group use their daily surroundings for inspiration. The patterns used in 

these pieces are based on a type of wild fruit called the Pili nut, or Asian 

olive which grows in the jungle of the local area and is used in their daily 

meals. As a way of giving thanks for the fruit, the Thai women weave these 

patterns into their textiles. 

All items have waterproof lining. 

These products help to cultivate the artisans traditional weaving heritage and 

also improve their lives by providing regular work and a fair wage.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS 

New for this season these woodland 

inspired purses are handmade in felt and 

embellished with appliqué, embroidery 

and glass beads with contrasting cotton 

lining. 

CERAMIC & TAGUA 

Although both tagua and ceramic are fairly hardwearing 

materials, please be aware that if you drop your jewellery onto 

a hard surface it can break. Never immerse your jewellery in 

water as this can cause it to crack. 

Tagua is a natural, organic material and the undyed products 

may darken slightly over time, this is normal. If your tagua 

jewellery is looking a bit dull it can be buffed up with a soft 

white cloth. 

CROCHETED COTTON 

SCARVES & ACCESSORIES 

Spot clean with a damp cloth. 

Hand wash cold. 

SILVER & BRASS 

Over time all metals will eventually tarnish. Keeping jewellery 

in an airtight environment, such as a zip lock bag, can minimize 

tarnishing. If you want to restore the original shine to your brass 

jewellery we recommend you buff it with Brasso applied with a 

soft cloth. For silver you can use silver dip or we recommend 

this simple environmentally friendly method, it is especially 

good for the crocheted silver collections.

Put a sheet of aluminium foil in a saucepan 

or pyrex dish and place your jewellery on 

the foil. 

Add a large tablespoon of baking powder.

Remove the jewellery and rinse in tap water. 

Crocheted silver jewellery should be patted 

dry with kitchen roll or a non-fluffy soft cloth.

Pour freshly boiled water into the pan, 

ensuring that the jewellery is fully covered. 

Mix gently with a wooden spoon for a 

couple of mins. The solution should fizz as 

the tarnish is removed.

and Silvo if additional cleaning is required.
