ONE FAMILY
AT A TIME
by Tiffany Rochonn of lmogireod
Friday, September 8, 2017 marks the
51 st anniversary of International
Literacy Day. The day, founded by
U nesco, was coined in an e ffort to
expand awareness about the critical need
for accessible literacy instruction around
the globe. Since then, the organization
and millions of educators, advocates, and
administrators have been able to celebrate
many milestones and successes.
Literacy numbers are up across the board
and despite the continual gap in mastery,
advances in technology continue to fill
the holes that need to be filled. Except in
one key area, Media Literacy.
Media Literacy has its share of
definitions. For the most part, the term is
weighed heavily upon one's ability to
define media references in a way that is
comprehensible. With the influx of
fake news nowadays, it's critical that those
of us who educate, especially parents,
understand the affects of inconsistent
deliberation. Simply put, our children
deserve first-hand information that's
substantive and perceptible. They need
to be allowed opportunities to
conceptualize world views from a
world view.
What that means for parents in a nutshell
is International Literacy Day has to
become a norm. The promotion of literal
acumen as the way of life it should be an
everyday thing. Outlining the differences
in how information is disseminated in this
country and across the world should be a
regular conversation. Pondering how to
solve some of today's most pressing
challenges while walking in someone else's
shoes should be daily contemplation.
After all, society is only as well-rounded
as the intellects within.
Have a different conversation with your
family this International Literacy Day
about world views. You never know, you
might just learn something new.
