When CrossFit Mokena
co-owner Christie Neighbors
said she wanted to
double from last year the
amount her gym would donate
to charity, she sounded
optimistic.
But nearly quadruple?
Check.
On Sunday morning, Sept.
17, a day filled with some of
the most rigorous, intensive
training one can do, people
came out by the dozens to
jump — and run and ferociously
attack every muscle in
their body — at the chance to
help out Manteno-based 1Pet-
1Vet, a nonprofit that trains
and then donates service dogs
to veterans at no cost.
And those people pitched
Training Director at 1Pet1Vet Peggy Moran looks on with
are some of the items that were donated to the gym’s silent
raffle for the charity.
in as hard as they worked
out, to the tune of $4,600.
Last year, CrossFit Mokena
raised $1,300 for Pink Heals,
a national charity organization
that provides home visits
to show individuals that they
are loved, cherished and important
to others.
It’s become a yearly tradition
to pick a charity and
host a fundraiser with gym
members and people from
the public at large, Neighbors
said.
Maybe it’s fitting that this
year’s charity turned out to be
1Pet1Vet, chosen by CrossFit
coach Kyle Barrett; the only
thing more impressive than
the exercises was the service
dog, a 1-year-old retriever
named Blossom.
