DOWN UNCLE TOM’S WAY
Gyms, yoga, running, cycling all get their fair share of press when it comes to
keeping fit and healthy and if those forms of exercise work for you that’s great.
However, if you’re struggling to fit exercise into your life, there’s a very basic
workout that’s just as good for you - walking.
No matter what your fitness level or your age, walking is good for your heart,
your head and your wallet. It’s a great way to stay active and improve your
fitness levels without the high intensity demanded by other forms of exercise.
In fact, scientists in California have found that in some cases walking can be
more effective than running. Over a six year period, those with a regular
walking regime reduced their risk of heart disease by 9.3% while running
reduced it by 4.5%.
Regular walking can also improve the quality of your sleep, improve your
energy levels during the day and what’s more, it’s completely free of charge.
Walking can also be good for those suffering from depression and anxiety,
especially if you walk in green open spaces. Here in mid-Sussex we’re lucky
enough to have some fantastic countryside on our doorstep, so there’s no
excuse.
You can also track your walking progress and set yourself goals and targets to
maintain your motivation. Fitness Trackers and Apps like Map My Walk allow
you to track your mileage and Pacer counts the number of steps you take.
Alternatively, a simple pedometer worn while walking will also allow you to
work out the number of steps you have walked.
At the same time why not listen to some music, a podcast or a talking book to
keep you going.
Changing your route and adding hills also keeps your interest. So, whether you
walk alone or with friends, simply pull on some comfortable shoes and step out,
because walking works!
That’s all from me, have a great month!
