Company Profile
old: for centuries, it was considered the most valuable
substance on earth—used as the preferred currency for
numerous civilizations, including serving as the original
basis of our own American dollar. But beyond its mere
monetary meaning, the term “gold standard” has become recognized
as a universal measure of quality and excellence.
Ganja Gold founder Alex Patel.
Unfortunately, as the modern cannabis industry continues to flood with new companies, products and
strains, there’s a legitimate concern that—in their desire to supply the ever-growing demand— some of
these brands will compromise on quality for the sake of efficiency. It’s exactly this perceived drop in quality
that inspired Oakland-based entrepreneur Alex Patel to start his own connoisseur cannabis company—
one that would only produce pot products that lived up to what he saw as the so-called gold standard.
Hence, he named this company Ganja Gold.
“When we first started out, quality was not at the top of the list of qualifications for most producers,”
Patel claims. “Everybody wanted to cut corners, to make the most dollars out of a product
line. I definitely felt like the needs of the connoisseur marijuana smoker were not being met.”
Patel was first turned on to cannabis at the age of 17 while working at the GAP.
“It was during a break in the back,” he recalls. “People were all smoking cigarettes, and this one
gentleman said, ‘Hey, you want to try this out?’ At first I was hesitant,” he admits, “but then I took
a little rip and I was all smiles from ear to ear. I went back to work, and was giving out discounts to
everybody. From there on, I never looked back—and I don't plan to.”
After graduating college in 2008, Patel landed his first job in the industry—as the receptionist for a
collective called Green Care Association in San Jose, where he was quickly promoted to budtender and
then sales rep. It was there, while preparing pre-rolls, that he got the idea for what would eventually
become his trademark product.
Why do Ganja Gold add so much kief, wax & hash to
every one of their trademark tarantula joints?
apparently, that’s just how they roll.
