“Fuel For Friends” Feeding Hungry
Children Throughout Local Communities
By Lori J. Koller
Fuel for Friends a local
group consisting of 11 Hopedale
students and women, has
been very busy this summer
making and donating packages
with healthy nonperishable
food items to help feed hungry
children. The group that was
started by Hopedale resident of
25 years, Amy Wersted and Senior
at Hopedale High School
Megan McLellan, was initially
intended to bring attention to
the similarities between children
with eating disorders and
hungry school children. However,
over the past few months
has become so much more.
Outside of Wersted and
McLellan, the group also includes
students, Rachel Szemethy,
Katherine Mooney
and Lydia Gould as well as
adults Joan Szemethy, Susan
Frongillo, Sara Gould, Kristin
MacEachern, Jocelyne Fauerbach,
and June Gould. “Megan
Rachel Szemethy, Megan McLellan, Katherine Mooney.
and I know people with eating
disorders, so we wanted to start
a group that would merge feeding
the hungry with eating disordered
people. “We reached
out to Walden in Milford and
Worcester. They put flyers up,
and we had hopes that those
with eating disorders would
join us and learn more about
how hunger effects them.” said
Wersted. The packages consist
of several items; water, canned
in need, and 250 packages to
the Boston Family Children and
Youth Center who recently delivered
their packages to the Houston
Hurricane Harvey relief
efforts.
Over the summer the group
held a yard sale where everyone
in the group donated items and
they raised $250 to help their
cause. “The proceeds from the
yard sale enabled us to donate
$150 to the United Way in Framingham
where they held lunch for
school children every day during
the whole summer. Each $50
helped a number of children and
teens get at least one square meal
during the summer when they
wouldn’t otherwise have gotten
food at home.” said Wersted.
Lastly, each of these amazing
women all carry some bags
in their cars in case they come
across a homeless or hungry person
on the streets.
Co-Founder Amy Wersted is
Living Healthy
Cataract Surgery- The Laser Revolution
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
What is a cataract and
what is cataract surgery?
A cataract is a common condition
in which the normally clear
lens of the eye becomes progressively
cloudy. When light passes
through a clear lens, the light can
focus to a point, creating a clear
view. When light passes through
a cataract, the light gets distorted,
creating a blurred view. Compared
to vision with a clear lens,
your vision with a cataract may
look fuzzy, and colors might be
muted. These visual disturbances
from cataracts are progressive,
and when they become bothersome
or limit your daily activities,
it’s time to consider treatment.
Treatment for cataracts involves
surgery to remove the cataract
and replace it with an intraocular
lens implant. It is the most common
surgical procedure in the US
and around the world and is considered
to be an extremely successful
and safe procedure.
What is laser cataract
surgery?
Many of the steps of cataract
surgery are traditionally
performed using handheld tools.
Now, they can be completed with
the precision of a laser. Using
the Catalys Precision Laser System,
your surgeon can offer you
unprecedented accuracy and
customization in your cataract
surgery procedure. Your surgeon
can use the laser to create a circular
opening for accessing and
removing the cataract. Clinical
studies have shown that this
opening is more accurate when
performed with the laser than
what is achievable by hand. The
laser then softens and breaks up
the hard cataract into tiny pieces,
allowing for gentler, easier cataract
removal. Depending on your
Welcome
pre-operative vision and desired
visual result, your surgeon may
recommend a tailored treatment
plan that could include creating
ultra-precise laser incisions in the
cornea and a specific lens implant
type (e.g. The Symfony multifocal
lens for near and far vision). This
tailored treatment may reduce
your need for glasses or contact
lenses after surgery.
What are the benefits of
laser cataract surgery?
• A highly-customized treatment
using advanced 3D imaging
• A treatment with little or no discomfort
• A more precise treatment
• A gentler and easier cataract
removal
• Generally, a more rapid visual
recovery due to reduced inflammation
• The opportunity to receive tailored
treatment with advanced
technology multi-focal lenses,
which may reduce the need for
glasses or contacts after surgery
Am I a suitable candidate
for laser cataract surgery?
In our experience, most cataract
patients are suitable patients
for laser cataract surgery. Your
doctor and his/her support staff
will discuss your candidacy in
more detail during your cataract
evaluation exam.
How long has the
procedure been
performed?
Thousands of procedures
have been successfully performed
using the Catalys Precision Laser
System, and lasers have been
used in eye procedures for decades.
Catalys laser represents the
new standard in precision laser
cataract surgery and was FDA
cleared in 2011.
How does the laser work?
What is it doing to my
eye?
Every eye has a unique size
and shape. Prior to treatment, the
Catalys Precision Laser System
scans your eye making a precise
3D map of relevant structures.
This process enables your
surgeon to create a highly customized
treatment plan that is
tailored for your eye. The laser
then focuses light to create precise
incisions exactly where intended.
The laser makes the incisions in a
matter of seconds. You should experience
little, if any, discomfort.
What will I feel?
You can expect little or no discomfort
during your treatment.
During the laser portion, patients
describe seeing kaleidoscope of
lights and slight pressure only.
How long does the
procedure take?
You can expect to be at the
surgery center for 2 hours. You
will be in the procedure room for
10 to 12 minutes. The 3D imaging
and laser portion of the treatment
only takes a few minutes.
How is your center
different from other
cataract surgery centers?
Catalys laser cataract surgery
is all about better precision,
more safety and excellent outcomes.
Across the country, only
a small number of specialized
lasers are available and in use.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
Dr. Kaldawy was the first to offer
bladeless laser cataract surgery in
the area and among the first in
New England. We are proud to
bring this technology to the area.
The top 5 teaching hospitals in
the nation offer bladeless laser
cataract surgery. We offer the
same. We use one of the 2 femtosecond
lasers currently used by
Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. The
same laser used by the best of the
best. We perform the procedure
in a state-of-the-art center where
70 other Boston surgeons operate.
We implant high quality premium
lenses, with correction for
distance, near and everything in
between. With the new Symfony
implants, astigmatism is no longer
a problem. The new Symfony
implant is music to your eyes.
Our percentage of complications
and infections is one of the lowest
in the nation and is measured
by independent sources. 100%
of the surgeries are performed
under topical anesthesia, so only
drops, no need for shots and their
risks and no need for stitches. We
are proud to offer excellence in
cataract surgery and world class
outcomes closer to home.
Hopedale History Exhibits
Hopedale Historian Dan
Malloy has created two photo
exhibits of historic houses in
Hopedale.
In the main level Reference
area, the display is of “Early
Hopedale Homes.” Starting
with the “Big House” built in
the 1700’s where the early community
lived when they came
to Hopedale, these homes date
from around 1800 to the middle
of the 19th century. Some
of these are “before and after”
pictures as several of the homes
have recently been torn down.
In the Meeting Room on the
basement level are pictures of
“Colonial Revival Homes” with
information about the Colonial
Revival design movement in the
United States. Hopedale has
many fine examples of this type
of architecture built in the late
1800’s through the 1930s. Colonial
Revival architecture sought
to follow American colonial architecture
of the period around
the Revolutionary War and
draws strongly from Georgian
architecture of Great Britain.
Dan has also created a notebook
of houses in Hopedale, come see
if your home is included. It is located
with the “Early Hopedale
Homes” pictures.
Dean College Approved to
Offer BFA Degree in Dance
Dean College, a private, residential
college located in Franklin,
Massachusetts, has been
approved by the Department
of Higher Education to offer a
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in
Dance. Beginning in the fall of
2018, students entering Dean
will have the opportunity to enroll
in the BFA program.
Dean College already offers
students the opportunity to earn
a minor in Dance, an Associate
of Arts degree in Dance and/
or a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Dance, and will now add the
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in
Dance to its program.
“We are delighted that the
BFA will take its place beside our
BA to provide students with the
widest range of possibilities to
pursue their passions in the field
of Dance,” says Vice President
of Academic Affairs, Dr. Michael
Fishbein.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in
Dance is an applied arts degree
designed to prepare students for
professional careers as performers
and/or choreographers.
“Dean College has always
maintained a strong commitment
to the discipline of dance
on its campus,” says Marc Arentsen,
dean of the School of
Dance. “The new BFA in Dance
will continue in that tradition
and enable skill sets, practices
and perspectives of today’s
professional-level dance. For students,
this new degree program
ultimately represents a whole lot
of work,” he added. “But then,
Dean Bulldogs never miss a
chance to dance.”
ranked 22nd in the 2018 U.S.
News & World Report for the
Best Regional Colleges, North
category. Additionally, Dean
placed 15th in this category for
Best Value Schools.
This is the seventh consecutive
year that Dean College has
received the honor.
“We are thrilled to be recognized
by U.S. News and our peer
institutions once again this year,”
said Dr. Paula M. Rooney, Dean
College President. “It signals
the overall strength of Dean’s
academic experience and the
emphasis we place on student
success.”
U.S. News & World Report
is a multi-platform, publisher of
news and information. The U.S.
News ranking system for the Best
Regional Colleges rests on two
pillars. The formula uses quantitative
measures that education
experts have proposed as reliable
indicators of academic quality,
and it is based on research
of what matters in education,
including: graduation rate performance,
academic reputation,
and financial selectivity among
others.
This year’s ranking is a testament
to The Dean Difference –
the hands-on and engaging
faculty & staff, strong academic
support, valuable internships,
Dean College Presents: Six Characters in
Search of an Author, October 11-15, 2017
The School of the Arts at Dean College
will perform Six Characters in Search
of an Author, beginning Wednesday, October
11 through Sunday, October 15,
2017.
This compelling play is juxtaposed as
six characters arrive unexpectedly during
the rehearsal of a play in search of an author
to complete their story. Audiences for
over 90 years have enjoyed and mused on
the dilemma provided by the arrival of the
“out of time and place” individuals. Do
not miss this early absurdist play exploring
the relationship among authors, their
characters, and those involved in theater
productions.
The Dean College production of
Six Characters in Search of an Author
Interview with the Director:
Six Characters in Search of an Author, a Dean College
Theatre Production
Calling all theatre goers! A
new show is coming to town, and
it’s not one you’ll want to miss!
The School of the Arts at Dean
College presents Six Characters
in Search of an Author, beginning
Wednesday, October 11
through Sunday, October 15,
2017.
Guest director Eric Parness
sat down to answer a few questions
and to take us on his journey
of adapting this great work
for the Dean College production.
Q. What inspired you to
become the guest director of
Dean College’s production
of Six Characters in Search of
an Author
A. After working as a director
in New York City for several
years, it was time for me to transition
to a career in education. I
began teaching at Westfield State
University last year and after
traveling to the John F. Kennedy
Center for the Performing
Arts for a workshop, I was
approached about the position.
Being a guest director is a winwin:
I can work on a large stage
and in academia, which is very
different than NYC, and the students
are able to gain knowledge
from a working director.
Q. What can a person expect
when they go to see Six
Characters?
A. The illusion that is set up
at the beginning of the production
is one that the audience is
walking in to a real rehearsal,
the rehearsal for the next Dean
College performance. There will
be stage managers, actors and
actresses rehearsing, all claiming
to be characters from a script for
the upcoming performance. The
audience will be taken into this
magical experience. Over the
course of the night, things will
become less real. By the end, you
aren’t quite sure what is real and
what is not.
Q. Talk about casting…
what is the selection process?
A. Casting is probably the
most important part of directing.
Every actor that walked in
to the room to audition for this
performance gave me the impression
that they could act, but I
only had 14 roles and 80 students
auditioning. They each had 90
seconds to convince me that they
were right for the role. After the
will take place in the Main Stage in the
Campus Center at Dean College, 99 Main
Street, Franklin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
– Saturday and 2:00 p.m. Saturday and
Sunday. General admission is $22, Seniors
$12 and Children $7.
To learn more and purchase tickets, visit
www.dean.edu/boxoffice.
first audition, I invited 30 actors
to the call-back. From there, I
had them interact in groups and
based on my findings, I cast each
role.
Q. What can an actor do to
stand out in an audition?
A. Act with their whole being.
Some actors come to an audition
with a compelling monologue,
but are not physically involved
with their performance … and
that makes it hard to distinguish
themselves from others. A strong,
trained, natural voice and body
that is reacting to their text and
aware of their body movements
really makes the actor stand out.
You can tell when someone understand
what they are saying,
versus reciting what they are saying.
Thursday November 9, 2017
9:00 am
Hopedale Sr. Center
Q. Who is going to love this
production?
A. The more familiar an individual
is with the Dean College
community, the more they
will appreciate the show. It will
appeal to a person who likes
psychological dramas and thrillers
– something like the Twilight
Zone, but with moments of
humor. This performance will
change the perception of what
theatre is and the audience must
be comfortable with being challenged.
Q. What are you most excited
for the audience to see?
A. The ending. It is intended
to rattle and confuse the audience.
There is an emotional moment
that I don’t think anyone
will see coming.
Sports
Hopedale’s Track, Cross-country Coach
Maguire’s Focus & Approach Make Him A Dynamic Leader
By KEN HAMWEY
Staff Sports Writer
Tim Maguire is a coach for all
seasons and he’s also a coach for
all the right reasons.
The 31-year-old Maguire is
Hopedale High’s girls varsity
coach in cross-country and outdoor
track and he’s the head
coach of both the boys and girls
indoor track squads. During his
seven years in each of the three
venues, Maguire has guided the
cross-country contingent to one
Dual Valley Conference crown
and the boys indoor team to
four league titles and one district
championship.
The cross-country team,
which was league champs in
2015, came close to registering
three straight DVC crowns. They
came up a point short in 2014
and 2016.
Maguire’s success is quite apparent
but what’s more telling
is his approach to coaching, the
objectives he sets and the positive
atmosphere he creates.
A biology teacher in the classroom,
Maguire strives diligently
to also be a teacher when he’s
coaching.
“It’s imperative to show kids
what they must understand and
what’s needed to improve,’’ he
emphasized. “I strive to help
them develop skills and technique.
Cross-country and track
don’t always involve strategy.
Skills are needed for distance running,
hurdles, jumping and field
events. I also try to be consistent
each day by being prepared, executing
a plan and leading by example.
I’m easy-going but I want
our competitors to be focused and
to develop mental toughness.’’
Winning might define Maguire’s
teams but it’s not what
defines his style. His philosophy
of coaching is all about reaching
one’s potential.
“Seeing kids improve is so important,’’
said the native of Barrington,
R.I. “I stress realizing
one’s potential and that includes
being the best they can be and
also being a good leader and a
good teammate. I don’t ever want
our participants to put limits on
themselves.’’
Hopedale coach Tim Maguire offers advice to Rita Maurais at a 2016
indoor track meet. (Photo, courtesy of Steve Bassignani).
Maguire is acutely aware that
athletics teach life lessons and he’s
genuinely pleased when members
of his squads overcome adversity,
set goals, and assume responsibility.
“I emphasize things like accountability,
leadership and time
management,’’ he noted. “It’s a
plus when a competitor is responsible
and dedicated to the team.
I also stress positive thinking.
Kids often think about failure. I
tell them to be flexible with their
mind. It’s good to set goals but be
flexible to reset your goals if you
don’t reach them.’’
Maguire disagrees with those
who view track as a lonely sport.
He regards it as isolated.
“It’s fulfilling to know that
you’re in complete control of the
effort you’re going to give,’’ he
emphasized. “Others can’t influence
what you’re achieving. It’s
you, and only you, who can push
yourself physically.’’
Maguire, who ran track and
cross-country at Barrington High
and Colby College, likes the dualpronged
nature of those sports.
“Track, especially, is unique because
an individual can achieve
success, and by doing so, is also
scoring points for the team. One
can fulfill his or her goals and also
enjoy working towards a common
goal for the team.’’
Maguire often gets candidates
who use track or cross-country to
sharpen their skills for another
sport. He views that as okay because
“there’s nothing wrong
with improving oneself.’’
“A lot of kids do it but I encourage
them to enjoy track for
what it is,’’ he said. “I’m glad it
can help them in some area for
another sport. I admire kids who
want to improve.’’
When assembling a roster,
Maguire looks for specific attributes
that will eventually enhance
a team’s success and its chemistry.
“Mental toughness is No. 1,’’
he emphasized. “It’s needed to
perform effectively and consistently.
Mental toughness also
helps to become a good role
model and a good leader. Other
attributes that matter are responsibility
and accountability. And, I
look for athletes who are skilled,
know technique and possess
speed and quickness.’’
Now in his eighth year of
coaching, Maguire has no problem
rating his favorite triumph. It
came in 2014 with the girls crosscountry
team. “We finished third
in the districts and that qualified
us for the state tourney,’’ he said.
“I was proud of our achievement
because we had worked hard to
improve. We finished 12 th in the
states that year and in 2015, we
were second in the districts and
7 th in the states.’’
Maguire was a capable runner
in high school but he improved in
college. He was solid in the steeplechase,
posting a personal best
of 9:45 for an event that is 3,000
meters and includes 28 hurdles
and seven water hazards. He was
a captain at Colby and also competed
in the New England Outdoor
Championships.
After graduating with a major
in biology and a minor in education,
Maguire spent a year substituting
at the high school level
in Maine. In 2009, he joined the
faculty at Hopedale. Closing in
on a masters degree from Bridgewater
State, Maguire and his wife
Abbie reside in Providence.
Working with veteran coach
Joe Drugan, Maguire labels him
as “a mentor who taught me the
art of coaching.’’
“Joe is the boys varsity crosscountry
and outdoor coach and
an assistant indoors,’’ Maguire
said. “He’s got great passion and
he’s a terrific motivator.’’
This fall’s cross-country team
is off to a good start, beating
Douglas in its opening meet. Maguire
is optimistic his squad can
compete for the DVC title, finish
1-3 in the districts and qualify for
the states.
“Five of our top seven runners
are returnees,’’ he noted.
“They’re Isabelle Doran, Michaela
Casey, Carrie Maurais,
Hailey Cote, and Erin McCarthy.
They’re good leaders and highcaliber
runners. Also, freshman
Katelyn Brunt is back. She’s been
running for us since Grade 7.’’
Athletic Director Bill Gaine
offered his view on Maguire’s
value to Hopedale’s coaching
staff.
“Tim Maguire coaches three
seasons in sports that have the
largest numbers,’’ Gaine said.
“Similar to coach (Joe) Drugan,
there aren’t many high school
coaches that dedicate more time
to the most amount of kids. In
addition, coach Maguire teaches
a full-load of classes and remains
a competitive marathon runner.
We’re lucky to have someone so
passionate about teaching our
kids about discipline, work ethic,
and a healthy lifestyle.’’
Hopedale Girls Volleyball on the Verge
of Something Big
By Christopher Tremblay
It’s been ten years in the
making, but Coach Andrew
Mainini believes Hopedale is on
the verge of something big and
it would be true justice if this
year’s senior class of athletes
could be the ones to accomplish
the never before feat.
“The volleyball program
began in 2007 and it has been a
building process. This year’s senior
class has been very instrumental
in that process,” Coach
Mainini said. “Through their
four years, not only have they
grown as athletes, but the team’s
record has steadily improved as
well. Our ultimate goals is to win
a State Championship, but this
year we want to be the first team
in Hopedale history to capture
the Central Division Tournament
Championship. And if
we’re fortunate enough to do
that then the States.”
The four Blue Raider seniors
are Moran Foley, the team’s setter
and hitter; Jenna Van Zile,
an outside hitter and secondary
setter; Liz Swanson, an outside
hitter and Julianne Poirier, a defensive
specialist. All four girls
began their varsity careers as
freshmen and saw playing time
their first season on the court.
As freshmen Hopedale went
14-5 but lost in the first round
of the tournament. The following
year, as sophomore’s, they
went 16-6, earned an eight seed
and breezed thru the first three
rounds shutting out all three
teams including the number
one and four seed before losing
to Sutton (the #2 seed) in the
finals. Last year Hopedale went
17-1, grabbed the number one
seed and defeated Southbridge
(3-0) and Blackstone Valley (3-1)
before falling to Millbury, a team
they beat handily during the
regular season.
That junior campaign
Hopedale went 10-0 in the Dual
Valley League and took home
its first ever league title outright.
The Blue Raiders had previously
shared the championship
in 2011.
“These four girls are some of
the most knowledgeable volleyball
athletes that I’ve ever worked
with,” Mainini said. “Their volleyball
IQ’s are through the roof
and have provide the other girls
in the program role models. I’ve
had some good leaders in the
past, but these girls are good volleyball
players as well.”
As Hopedale heads into this
season Mainini is hoping that his
seniors perform at a top level.
Foley is a vocal leader who was
the team’s second leading attacks
and was the team’s number
one setter. The Coach is
looking for her to become even
more involved in the offense
while providing a dynamic front
row presence.
Van Zile and Swanson have
been learning new attacks to
speed up the offense. The duo
are also very versatile athletes
willing to make changes in their
playing style in order to take the
next step. Poirier is the team’s
defensive leader and a very
vocal one at that. According to
Mainini she can push the girls to
elevate their game.
Having already brought
home the school’s first ever outright
League Championship,
Mainini is hoping that this year’s
team will now bring home a Divisional
and State Championship.
“As always, our goal is to win
the league. There is very good
competition in the DVC, but I
expect to repeat,” the Hopedale
Coach said. “This year when
you look at our overall record
it may not be as good as it has
been in the past due to the fact
that we are scheduling tougher
opponents like Milford (2X),
Shrewsbury and Millbury (2x),
but it will not hinder our performance
once we get to the tournament.”
If all goes as planned this
year’s senior class will be going
out in style as well as leaving
the volleyball in a good state for
years to come.
The Snow is the Story
By John Ke ley
As with most stories, there are
two sides. Some would s e the new
Sch ol children s e a unique opportunity
many people understand it as a fact
Certainly, we ar experiencing
Franklin Library Invites
Genealogy-minded
Folks to Join the Club
By MarJorie turner ho lMan
The night was bi ter cold, but
for the 20+ folks who showed up
a the Franklin Public Library for
the first m eting of the Genealogy
Club, it was a time to talk
about family co nections and
countries of origin. Many participants
were from Franklin, with a
few from Milford, Norfolk and
Be lingham. The theme of connections
was consistent as each
person explained their interest in
participating in the group.
Linda Batchelder of Franklin
noted that she got interested in
genealogy because of a relative’s
ashes that remain in her a tic.
“His name was Bertul—he died
during the 1918 flu epidemic—
a friend of my grandfather’s,”
Batchelder began. “When my
grandfather was able to return to
Latvia, he wa su posed to take
the ashes wit him, but wasn’t
a lowed to. They’re sti l in our
a tic. We learned that Bertul had
b en our grandfather’s best man
in his we ding and ma ried a
relative of ours.”
Each person had stories to
share of wha they had already
learned in their family research,
and a l had mysteries they hoped
to solve in the future. Vicki Buchanio,
Head of Reference and
Public Services a the Franklin
Public Library told the group, “I
have lots of relations who must
sti l be alive—I’ve never found
the death certificates for them,
even though some of them were
born in 1802, so they must sti l
be alive!”
Among those who a tended
were people with r ots in Finland,
Poland, Germany, and
England, besides several of
Scots-Irish descent. Buchanio
was pleased with the turnout—
she had b en afraid n one would
show up. Buchanio has had a
long-time pa sion for genealogy
A times, we hear news reports
of a beloved parent with
Alzheimer’s disease or dementia,
who has wandered ou the
front d or and into the w ods,
or other situations where a child
or t en with Autism or a mental
encounter with police officers
who weren’t aware of the child’s
special circumstances and fears.
In these cases, a li tle knowledge
can go a long way.
The Ho liston Police Department
aims to arm itself with
that knowledge and ge to be ter
know and strengthen its relationship
with the community it
In January, The Ho liston
the C.A.R.E. (Children and
aimed at helping police gather
information about member of
Is It Spring, Yet?
Second Annual Ho liston AgCom Family Event
March 22 at Breezy Hi l
By J.d. o’Gara
It’s b en a rea ly long winter.
Members of Ho liston’s Agricultural
Commi t e, or AgCom,
are asking a very logical question
– “Is It Spring, Yet?” with
their Second A nual Family
Event welcoming the season on
Sunday, March 2, from 12-4
p.m., to take place at Br ezy
Hi l Farm, 583 Adams Str et,
Ho liston. As it did last year,
th event wi l feature baby animals
and farm-related fun for
the whole family, and the suggested
family donation, which
wi l su port Ho liston AgCom,
is just $5.
“This is just a fun event for
families in town, because the
town i so su portive of agriculture,”
says Paula Mark, member
of the Agricultural Commi sion
who has lived in Ho liston for
12 years on land, she says, that’s
b en in her husband’s family
for generations. “When we got
this property, it was inevitable
that I was going to turn it into
a farm,” she says, explaining,
with a smile, that her sma l farm
has grown from just chickens to
now, b es, alpacas, a horse and
ra bit. The 4H leader hopes her
place can someday be a place
for “ kids to come to reco nect
to nature and learn how to act
around animals.”
Animals – in fact, animal
families, are sure to be what
Ho liston kids and their own
families are going to s e a the
The Li tle White Market Wi l Be Back Be ter than Ever at End of Month
By J.d. o’Gara
Just over six years ago,
Tracey Liberatore had a
vision for the property she
drove by at 5 Depot Str et
in Hopedale just over six
years ago.
“I thought it would
make a cute li tle market,
and we didn’t have anything
like that in Hopedale,”
says the Hopedale
Mom and 21-year-resident
of the town. And if anyone
could turn that li tle
the community, Tracey
could. She’d worked in
the f od industry since she
was a t en, later partnering
through which Liberatore
began her pa sion for f od
its restaurant, and she later came
back to lead the kitchen, wi ning
the Ma rio t Diamond A sociate
Busy wit her two boys, Liberatore
started slo wit her
she built a su ce sfu luncheon
“I think we have a real home
comfy, like you’re walking into
your grandmother’s
kitchen. It’s cozy, and
there are sme ls (o f od
Liberatore and her
sta f c ok a l of the
dishes right on the premises.
“We do a lot of
homemade soups and
salads, everything from
scratch,” says Liberatore.
“We even roast
our turkeys here, make
meatba ls, and we o fer
di ners, including
chicken Marsala and
b ef stew,” she says.
In fact, Hopedale
residents and local busine
take advantage of the
catering options, an area
Liberatore is excited to
March 12-14, at 7:30 p.m.
The musical features an a ray
with music and lyrics wri ten by
Jim Jacobs and Wa ren Casey, is
“Greased Lightning,” “We Go Together”
and “Shaken’ a the High
“I’m rea ly excited to put on
was the perfect fit, the perfect
Each spring the MHS Musical
acting, singing an dancing onstage,
The cast alone for this productio
numbers 50, says Christie,
with another 50 students working
backstage as crew. Two students
wi l play in the orchestra pit, although
due to the complexity of
the music, “we have hired some
says Christie.
Lead roles were chosen by audition,
Do you know wha tests your
child is taking thi spring? One
local residen thinks parents are
uninformed abou the new education
standards and the a companying
tests being considered by the
state of Ma sachuse ts. He hopes
to bring the polarizing i sue to the
forefront at Norfolk Town M eting
and on the town election ballot.
The United States is embarking
on an unprecedented journey
to unify education standards for a l
students in kindergarten through
12th grade. Known as the Common
Core State Standards Initiative,
these standard set common
education benchmarks acro s the
country in order to prepare students
for co lege and the workforce.
The Common Core uses the
Partnership for A se sment of
Readine s for Co lege and Car
ers, or the PAR C exam, to test
how we l students have learned the
new cu riculum. In Ma sachuse ts,
the PAR C exam wi l eventua ly
replace the Ma sachuse ts Comprehensive
A se sment System,
or MCAS test.
Norfolk resident Patrick
Touhey would like to put the
brakes on the PAR C test and
force discu sion of the new standards
and whether or not the
Norfolk and King Philip sch ols
should implemen them. Touhey
wi l be placing an article on the
Norfolk Town M eting wa rant
to remove Common Core and
PAR C testing from the sch ols
in a non-binding vote. He is also
a tempting to get enough signatures
to place the question on the
ba lot for the town election this
spring.
Touhey hopes these actions
wi l send a me sage to local sch ol
commi t es and the State Department
of Education: “We don’t
agr e with the PAR C testing and
Common Core cu riculum.” He
wants the local sch ols to return to
the pre-2 09 Ma sachuse ts educational
state standards.
Touhey is part of a group
After a tough winter, the
community can l ok forward to
a w ek of nature immersion that
doesn’t involve snow. The King
Philip Science National Honor
Society wi l be hosting naturalist
Brent Nixon during the w ek of
March 17 to 24. Several events
are pla ned for the sch ols and
the tri-town area.
Nixon, a renowned science
educator, has dedicated his life
to endangered species research.
Known for his high energy, interpretive
science shows, Nixon
travels extensively to promote
environmental education. In
a dition to his research work
and publications, Nixon has appeared
on TV, radio, and in print
media.
The Naturalist-in-Residence
w ek was the idea of A n Lambert,
a science teacher at KP
High Sch ol and the advisor for
the sch ol’s Science National
Honor Society. Lambert had
traveled to Alaska on a cruise
and Nixon was the naturalist on
board.
“His pa sion for his work,
knowledge about his topics,
and vivacious, entertaining,
and informational presentation
style was what made me think it
would be a great o portunity for
the KP students and community
if we could bring him here,” said
Lambert.
Lambert believes that when
students actua ly m et scientists
and interact with them, science
becomes interesting and fun.
Nixon’s expertise on wildlife and
field research should prov eyeopening
to students who spend
‘a Place To Turn’
for those in need
By liz taurasi
It’s b en years in the making,
but despite some major roadblocks
an delays, University
Station in Westw od is fina ly
opening for busine s in March.
And with it come some big
name stores the area has b en
waiting for, including Target (set
t open March 4, s e related story
on page 13) and Wegmans, both
of which wi l anchor the complex.
University Station, when
fu ly complete, is expected to
include a proximately 50, 0
square f et of retail and restaurant
space, along with residential
apartments and more.
University Station officia ly
opens for busine s in March as
we l as 16 busine ses, including:
Target, Marsha ls/HomeG ods,
Nordstrom Rack, Sports Authority,
PetSmart, Michaels, ULTA
Beauty, Kay Jewelers, Starbucks,
Smashburger, Famous F otwear,
Fidelity Investments, Dre s Barn,
David’s Bridal, Panera Bread,
and Charming Charlies.
Situated on 120 acres, University
Station, isn’t just going to be
a new sho ping destination, it’s
also a community. The mixeduse
development wi l feature
a blend of retail stores, restaurants,
recreation and residential
housing. The initial residential
component of the project wi l
include Gables residential, which
wi l feature 350 luxury apartment
units, as we l as Bridges
by Epoch, a memory care facility;
both also expected t open
this year. Gables Residential is
projected t open in late spring
2015, a cording to New England
Development officials.
A ditiona ly, University Station
is expected to have up to
350, 0 square f et of o fice
space available.
The project has b en a long
time in the making. In 2 07,
the project was put on hold due
to pla ning and financial i sues.
In 2 08, Wegmans was held up
from coming in after a local state
representative ca led for a home
rule petition to a prove the liquor
license for Wegmans at what was
then known as Westw od Station.
This ha pened just as the
legislature was ready to move
ahead with the a proval. A the
time, some local representatives
were concerned about giving
Wegmans an advantage over
Roche Bros. Both Wegmans and
Roche Bros wer eventua ly able
to secure b er and wine licenses
in the spring of 2012. Westw od
Special Town M eting a proved
the long-awaited project back in
May, 2013. Developers broke
ground on the project six months
later.
University Station is being
developed by New England Development,
along with Eastern
Real Estate and National Development.
“We l ok forward to welcoming
local and area residents to
this new sho ping destination,”
Dougla s Karp, president of New
England Development said in a
formal statement. “University
Station wi l be an exciting new
a dition to Westw od and brings
together a mix of popular stores,
restaurants, housing and more.”
