By Grace Allen
The message on the sign is
simple yet powerful: #2069.
That’s the number of Massachusetts
deaths in 2016 attributed
to opioid addiction.
Wrentham’s Trinity Episcopal
Church is behind the
signs, which are popping up in
communities all over the state,
including Medway, Franklin,
Millis, Plainville, Foxboro,
Walpole, Wrentham, Norfolk,
Hopkinton and even out to
Worcester and Palmer.
After a parish family lost a
child to a drug overdose, the
church’s outreach ministry decided
to act.
Deacon Ron Tibbetts said
the group learned that in 2016,
55,000 deaths in the U.S. were
substance-abuse related, and
that the Center for Disease Control
and Prevention estimates
that opioids could kill close to
650,000 people in the U.S. in
the next decade.
The Voice of Your Community
A Grassroots Effort to
End the Stigma of Addiction
“We began to understand
that the crisis is bigger than
we thought,” said Tibbetts. “A
generation of young men and
women are dying, which is the
loss of human potential.”
The group decided to place
a simple sign in front of the
church, in the hope of sparking
conversation about the
epidemic. The custom sign,
however, could only be ordered
in multiples of twenty-five. Parish
members began taking the
extra ones and erecting them in
their own front yards.
The effort, said Tibbetts,
snowballed. Soon requests were
coming in from other communities,
and the group began to
partner with the SAFE Coalition
to acquire and distribute
more signs. Eight police departments
in the area have also
committed to the signs in front
of their stations.
Tibbetts has delivered many
of the signs himself, and has met
people directly impacted by the
epidemic. The signs are an acknowledgment
of the crisis, and
people are grateful.
“These folks live in the shadows,”
he observed. “This effort
is helping to raise the cloud of
the stigma of addiction. It actu-
the Trinity Episcopal Church is
The rally will be called “No
“We are saying we care, we
stressed Tibbetts. “There is no
Former MA Gov.
Michael Dukakis to
Speak on Rail Link
in Franklin
By J.D. O’Gara
Do you take the commuter
rail into Boston? Has it frustrated
you that South Station and North
Stations do not easily connect?
On Wednesday, October 4th,
former Massachusetts Governor
Michael Dukakis will come to
Franklin to discuss the proposed
North-South Rail Link, the aim
of which would be to link Boston’s
two commuter rail stations
with a three-mile tunnel.
“Right now, we have a commuter
rail system with two separate
(lines), one to South Station
and one to North Station,” says
Rep. Jeff Roy, who invited Dukakis
to Franklin to come explain
the proposal. “They’re divided
by a gap. The idea is to put a
tunnel connecting the two stations,
which will allow service
from Washington, D.C., all the
way to Maine, and everything in
between.”
Roy believes the talk will be
of interest to anyone using the
local commuter rail stations. He
explains that the proposed South
Station expansion, “which is
going to be a cost of $2.3 billion,”
will put more tracks down
at South Station. “There are
some of us that believe that that’s
wasting valuable dollars. If they
took that money and invested it
in a tunnel, the economic benefits
would be more noticeable,
and we’d pick up three more
station stops, and then the commuter
rail system would then be
connected.”
Rep. Roy, who supports the
North-South link, says some estimates
say the link could take
55,000 cars off the road. The
change, he says, “would make it
much more palatable for people
to travel by commuter rail. Folks
in my community, who have two
commuter rail stations, would be
very interested.”
Roy says construction trends
nowadays in Franklin are keeping
commuter rail patrons in
mind, with sidewalks constructed
from the 280 units down past
Garelick Farms, and interest in
access to the train station from a
new apartment complex planned
at the old Thompson Press.
Roy says he’s delighted former
Gov. Dukakis is involved in
this project. Dukakis, he says, has
“stayed heavily involved since the
1988 presidential race. It’s a treat
to have him out. He’s a great
human being, and it will be great
to see him out here.”
Dukakis’ talk on the North-
South Rail Link will take place
on Wednesday, October 4, at
7 p.m. at the Franklin Historical
Museum at 80 West Central
Street in Franklin.
When I started, we worked to
One of those Medway Moms,
Moira Keating, an active member
of Medway’s PTO and parent
of three, says, “Medway’s PTO
community has been very fortunate
to have a fairly high level of
engaged parents with great energy,
a ‘let’s try it’ philosophy, and
the organization to make things
happen.” A few years ago, says
Keating, the group “identified
a growing interest and need to
provide some parent enrichment
in the evenings on various topics.
Admittedly, at first it was a new
angle to invite new faces to PTO
meetings. For example, one early
offering was a nutritionist for
parents of picky eaters … and
invited former School Resource
Officer Detective Donald Grimes
Keating points to two programs
committee, we have identified
our (4) priorities for 2017-18.
Specializing in:
• Kidney Stone Treatment
• Erectile Dysfunction/Male Sexual Health
• Vasectomy and Vasectomy Reversal
• Testosterone Replacement
• Peyronie’s Disease
Our goal is now to source and
deliver impactful and informative
programming to the Medway
community in various forms,”
says Keating.
Sherman explains those four
priorities as emotional wellness,
digital citizenship, celebrating
differences and substance use
prevention.
This year T.H.R.I.V.E. will
be bringing at least five parent
the first of which is Minding
It will be presented to interested
in the past 4-5 years, and as parents
many of us are challenged
by the alarming realities of social
media that is woven into
almost every aspect of our lives
if we allow it to be, for example,
the lack of conversation, addictive
behaviors, parent controls,
disturbing apps available to our
kids, cyberbullying, sexting, etc.,”
says Keating.
Sherman says that the schools
are coordinating student and faculty
programs to coincide with
what the parent programs, thus
reinforcing for the family tools
they can use.
“Literally same day, Medway
high school students will get the
Minding the Mind presentation
in school. The goal is to cultivate
a conversation; that learning and
mutual parent-child partnership
takes place and they receive information
in the same way,” he
says.
Keating says one of Medway
T.H.R.I.V.E.’s goals is to expand
its footprint to reach more caregivers
and families through a
variety of media. She envisions
offerings going beyond simple
lectures to such ideas as “a book
club to address a specific topic
such as anxiety in children, a
morning coffee chat for those
who may be unable to attend
an evening program, an evening
panel of local experts that
would be taped and available on
“The world is changing. We
all know that, and our students
are facing different wellnessrelated
challenges than our parent
group did, and we’re facing
these challenges in school,” says
Sherman. “We have to change
what skills we teach and how we
teach skills and help parents support
children in this new environment.”
Sherman says that the new
partnership reinforces the mission
of the school. “Part of our
mission is raising healthy children
and healthy citizens. If they come
to school feeling healthy and safe
and ready to learn, they’re going
to do better academically.”
In addition to the Minding the
and high school parents on October
11th, T.H.R.I.V.E. will also
present a similar program for elementary
Local Teens Grapple with Weight of Stress
By J.D. O’Gara
Adults often harken back to
carefree days of their youth, but
recent studies by the Metrowest
Health Foundation, specifically
their Adolescent Health Report
Card over the last decade, have
found that for teenagers, anxiety
is on the rise.
The Metrowest Health Foundation’s
Adolescent Health
Report Card, most recently
completed 2016 with results
coming out this past May—
surveyed 24,385 students in 26
high schools in the Metrowest
area, including Medway, Millis,
and Franklin. In 2016, just
over a third (36%) of teens in
the Metrowest area reported life
as being “very stressful,” in the
past 30 days, up from 27.9% in
2006. Teen stress in the area is
more likely among females, with
almost half of female students
surveyed (49%) reporting feeling
very stressed in the past 30 days,
more than double the levels reported
by males (22%). In fact,
the increase in stress seems to
be driven by females, as over the
past decade, stress among male
students (22%) has remained
level while stress among female
students has increased from
35% in 2006 to 49% in 2016.
Larger shares of older students
are feeling the pressure,
according to the survey. While a
quarter of 9th graders surveyed
felt stressed in the past 30 days,
that share grew to 48% among
seniors. Sources of stress reported
by students included:
• School issues (66%)
• Getting good grades (68%)
• Being able to finish all
their work and study
enough (62%)
• Plans after high school (49%)
• Social issues (33%)
In local high schools, school
personnel are noting the change
among students. In Medway,
Ryan Sherman, Director of
Wellness, is working with parents
and other faculty on a
new organization called Medway
T.H.R.I.V.E. He points to
the Adolescent Healthy Survey
as an indicator that programs
geared to wellness are important
to the success of students.
Mark Awdycki, guidance
counselor at MHS, feels “information
overload” can cause
more stress among kids. With a
Google search, he says, parents
and kids can be overwhelmed
with information.
“You see colleges tout how
many applications they get, how
their acceptance rates have gone
down, how competitive they are
and hard to get into. It trickles
down to our kids, who ask,
how am I going to compete?”
he says. What’s missing is being
able “to take a step back and
ask, what do I want to do? What
do I have a passion about?” He
hopes to see students taking AP
classes because they really enjoy
the subject, not because “I have
to take this many AP courses.”
Awdycki believes parents are
stressed as well, and technology
makes them always accessible.
“Everything happens so fast.
There’s constant interruption,”
he says. “We move in a very
fast society, and I think for some
kids, it’s too fast, and there’s too
much going on at once.”
Millis High School has focused
on building grit, or resilience
among students, and it’s
also instituted the Signs of Suicide
program, as well as a stress
management class as a half-year
elective. There’s also an advisory
program, in which small groups
of students in each grade meet
with one teacher for all four
years.
“It connects you to somebody
else in the building and has been
an opportunity to foster conversation
around some things going
on,” says Awdycki.
Gabby Siraco, former school
adjustment counselor at Millis
High School, suspects society’s
use of technology and social
media has a lot to do with the
rise. She often saw students in
Millis come in panicking about
a “B.”
“They don’t’ know what
they’re going to do (and think)
it’s going to ruin their transcript.
I know none of us gave them
that message, including their
parents, but they’ve gleaned
that information from different
places,” say Siraco. She says she
saw a shift in younger kids worrying
about getting into college.
Siraco also blames technology.
“Things are so different from
when we were in high school,”
she says. Although she can’t
point to specific studies, she
adds, “Even us in our work –
we’re on 24/7. We have our laptops.
We have our cell phones.
For (teens), it’s what’s going on
with friends, who’s doing what,
who’s saying what, and why
wasn’t I included. … There’s no
down time.”
“If stress goes unchecked,
certainly it can lead toward
feeling depressed,” says Siraco.
Finding different ways to manage
stress emotions is important,
she says, as is acknowledging the
need for help and reaching out
to parents who can find a patient
therapist.
Advice she recommends for
dealing with stress is “Communicate
and unplug. I feel like that
may oversimplify it, but if you’re
talking to each other, you’re
more likely to figure out what is
the problem and what is it you
need to address it.”
Jess Boose, youth minister
for kids in 7th to 11th grade at
Church of Christ in Millis, says
that, in addition to stress spilling
over from parents and overscheduling,
she sees kids in her
youth group focusing more on
their resumes.
“What I see is that building
the resume for college is much
more important than it used to
be,” she says. Although Boose
feels it’s great that schools are requiring
students to do community
service, “there’s no depth
to it. It becomes a one-off. Kids
don’t have real participation and
takeaway … They are learning
that it is just a box to check, not
that volunteering is necessary to
make all parts of a community
work or to empathize or care
about people who rely on soup
kitchens.” Boose feels that the
requirement becomes “another
anxiety piece.”
At Tri-County Regional Vocational
Technical School, too,
counselor Adele Sands says,
“Absolutely, we’re definitely seeing
an uptick of students with
anxiety.” Sands is one of three
full time adjustment counselors
at the school of over 1,000 students.
“Some of the things, when
I was growing up, that were far
away and I didn’t have to think
about – it’s part of their world.
There’s an immediacy of information
that I think is impacting
(teens),” says Sands. “They
know what’s happening in the
world, every minute of every
day. We’re all feeling that the
world is not as safe as it was.
There’s research saying it’s safer,
but I don’t think people feel it.”
Sands also suggests economic
impacts affecting families are affecting
students, and the rise of
the opioid epidemic has an effect.
Last school year, in fact, Tri-
County assembled a team of
about 15 faculty looking into
“trauma sensitive” schools.
“We have a group of teachers,
both vocational and regular,
and guidance counselors, who
have gotten together and are
doing some research on the best
practices in creating a trauma
sensitive environment. I think
right now their objective is to
do as much research as they can
around trauma, around school
anxiety, around mindfulness.
When they have a really good
idea of what they are looking
at, they’ll have a better idea
how they can impact the greater
school community.

State Fire Marshal Warns Against
Mixing Household Drain Cleaners
“I want to remind people not
to mix household drain cleaners
when unclogging drains at home,
says State Fire Marshal Peter J.
Ostroskey. “Each brand of drain
cleaner uses different chemicals,
and when mixed can create dangerous
fumes that can lead to
breathing difficulties.”
Recently, state Hazardous
Materials Response Team responded
to a Sudbury home for
just such a situation. The first
drain cleaner was not successful
in unclogging the drain, so the
resident tried a different brand of
drain cleaner. Residue of the first
chemical was still in the drain
(since the clog was still there) and
the two created noxious fumes.
State Fire Marshal Ostroskey
says, “If a drain cleaning chemical
does not work, either call a
plumber, or the manufacturer of
the product you used for advice.”
What is a cataract and
what is cataract surgery?
A cataract is a common condition
in which the normally clear
lens of the eye becomes progressively
cloudy. When light passes
through a clear lens, the light can
focus to a point, creating a clear
view. When light passes through
a cataract, the light gets distorted,
creating a blurred view.
Compared to vision with a clear
lens, your vision with a cataract
may look fuzzy, and colors might
be muted. These visual disturbances
from cataracts are progressive,
and when they become
bothersome or limit your daily
activities, it’s time to consider
treatment. Treatment for cataracts
involves surgery to remove
the cataract and replace it with
an intraocular lens implant. It is
the most common surgical procedure
in the US and around the
world and is considered to be an
extremely successful and safe
procedure.
What is laser cataract
surgery?
Many of the steps of cataract
surgery are traditionally performed
using handheld tools.
Now, they can be completed with
the precision of a laser. Using
the Catalys Precision Laser System,
your surgeon can offer you
unprecedented accuracy and
customization in your cataract
surgery procedure. Your surgeon
can use the laser to create a circular
opening for accessing and
removing the cataract. Clinical
studies have shown that this
opening is more accurate when
performed with the laser than
what is achievable by hand. The
laser then softens and breaks up
the hard cataract into tiny pieces,
allowing for gentler, easier cataract
removal. Depending on your
pre-operative vision and desired
visual result, your surgeon may
recommend a tailored treatment
plan that could include creating
ultra-precise laser incisions
in the cornea and a specific lens
implant type (e.g. The Symfony
multifocal lens for near and far
vision). This tailored treatment
may reduce your need for glasses
or contact lenses after surgery.
What are the benefits of
laser cataract surgery?
• A highly-customized treatment
using advanced 3D
imaging
• A treatment with little or no
discomfort
• A more precise treatment
• A gentler and easier cataract
removal
• Generally, a more rapid visual
recovery due to reduced
inflammation
• The opportunity to receive
tailored treatment with advanced
technology multi-focal
lenses, which may reduce
the need for glasses or contacts
after surgery
Am I a suitable candidate
for laser cataract surgery?
In our experience, most cataract
patients are suitable patients
for laser cataract surgery. Your
doctor and his/her support staff
will discuss your candidacy in
more detail during your cataract
evaluation exam.
How long has the procedure
been performed?
Thousands of procedures
have been successfully performed
using the Catalys Precision
Laser System, and lasers
have been used in eye procedures
for decades. Catalys laser
represents the new standard in
precision laser cataract surgery
and was FDA cleared in 2011.
How does the laser
work? What is it doing
to my eye?
Every eye has a unique size
and shape. Prior to treatment,
the Catalys Precision Laser
System scans your eye making
a precise 3D map of relevant
structures. This process enables
your surgeon to create a highly
customized treatment plan that
is tailored for your eye. The
laser then focuses light to create
precise incisions exactly where
intended. The laser makes the
incisions in a matter of seconds.
You should experience little, if
any, discomfort.
What will I feel?
You can expect little or no
discomfort during your treatment.
During the laser portion,
patients describe seeing kaleidoscope
of lights and slight pressure
only.
How long does the
procedure take?
You can expect to be at the
surgery center for 2 hours. You
Living Healthy
Helping His Patients Make Healing Choices
“If you’re really listening, we
actually learn from each other.
I learn from my patients every
day, says Keith W.L. Rafal,
MD, MPH director of Healing
Choices, P.C., a specialty medical
practice in Medway. A medical
doctor and specialist with a
master’s in Public Health from
Tufts University, Dr. Rafal serves
as Chief of Rehabilitation and
Restorative Care at Memorial
Hospital of Rhode Island and
was the former Director of the
Fibromyalgia Program at the Rehabilitation
Hospital of Rhode
Island. He is an assistant clinical
professor at Brown University
and clinical faculty at Tufts. Dr.
Rafal says one of the first questions
he asks patients, many of
whom suffer from chronic pain,
is “What do YOU think is going
on?”
“It’s a very important question,”
says Dr. Rafal. “Some people
have a very definite answer, or
they don’t know. It would never
have come out in a standard interview
if I didn’t give them the
space and listen and observe their
body language. They’re telling
their story. I’m the physician, I
have 30 years of experience, and
I am going to bring that to bear,
but I’m also aware of the limitations
of that exclusive approach.”
Putting away preconceptions and
listening, says Rafal, is something
a good doctor should always incorporate.
A physiatrist, Dr. Rafal specializes
in physical medicine and
rehabilitation. Physiatrists diagnose,
treat and rehab a wide variety
of pain related diagnosis as
well as non-surgical treatment for
the neurologic and musculoskeletal
system.
His patients are often referred
by another practitioner or another
physician, and he helps
them “to be in a better place and
really live their life as fully as possible,”
he says.
There is no cookie cutter approach
to managing chronic
pain. Anyone who claims to
have a cure-all, says Dr. Keith
Rafal, should be regarded with
skepticism. Dr. Rafal works with
patients who suffer from a variety
of conditions. In addition
to musculoskeletal problems,
Fibromyalgia and chronic pain,
he routinely treats patients living
with a stroke, brain injury, spinal
cord injury and other new disabilities,
that require rehabilitation.
While he doesn’t believe in
miracle cure-alls, Dr. Rafal does
incorporate open-mindedness toward
alternative approaches. His
job is to help patients arrive at a
tailored, interdisciplinary, holistic
approach for chronic pain management,
by offering a balance
of treatments that works best for
them.
The first step, he says, is ensuring
a proper diagnosis.
“We want to make sure as
much as we can that we understand
the etiology of the
pain, that a correct diagnosis
and proper evaluation has been
done,” says the doctor, who then
helps patients determine the
most appropriate combination
of treatments to manage their
pain, collaborating with a variety
of healthcare and wellness providers.
“I’m open to working with any
(healthcare or wellness provider).
It’s important to me to have this
interdisciplinary support system.”
Dr. Rafal has worked with
acupuncturists, massage therapists,
physical therapists, chiropractors,
psychologists, primary
care physicians, medical specialist
and others. In fact, he co-leads
a group of practitioners from
different disciplines, focused on
chronic pain at Milford Hospital.
“It’s a way of educating ourselves
and helping our patients,”
he says.
In medical environments, he
says, “When it comes to chronic
pain, research shows that alternative
approaches if properly
chosen have intrinsic efficacy.
They can be even more powerful
when a coordinated approach
of western and alternative care is
provided. As a rehab physician,
and as an integrated medicine
physician, I’m familiar enough
with all these disciplines to have a
sense of what may be best suited
for each patient.” Dr. Rafal can
identify what specialists would
help.
HEALING
continued from page 12
“Knowing how to support patients
on their journey is a really
important role,” says Dr. Rafal.
Because of his background,
Dr. Rafal can be a resource for
his patients and their specialists
seeking advice on pain medication
options. “I can evaluate how
pain medication has impacted
each individual and what some
of the alternatives may be. If patients
are still having pain, are we
addressing it—looking at it from
an interdisciplinary perspective?”
Dr. Rafal takes the mind-body
approach so seriously, he has even
spearheaded an international patient
stories project supported by
the nonprofit Our Heart Speaks.
“We do not routinely acknowledge
what it means on a very fundamental
level to be faced with
the challenge of living with a
new disability. This international
patient stories project speaks to
Cancer Coalition (MBCC), the
state’s leading breast cancer organization
with the unique goal
of breast cancer prevention. This
event for the LGBTQA community
will be held on Saturday,
October 21st from 8 p.m. - 12
a.m. at the Holiday Inn Brookline
located on 1200 Beacon
Street in Brookline, Mass.
Highlights for the 20th annual
dance event include a free
one hour dance workshop available
to all participants from 7 -8
p.m. led by Liz Nania, Director
the power of the human spirit by
giving voice to those who have
been successful in finding meaning
and purpose in their lives by
sharing their heartfelt stories,”
says Dr. Rafal, of Our Heart
Speaks (www.ourheartspeaks.
org), which is intended to serve
as inspiration for the disability
community, patients, caregivers,
healthcare providers and thought
leaders in health care.
Rafal hopes to inspire “a culture
of possibility,” a paradigm
shift. He was inspired to create
the site by the questions that
arose from patients he treated
of Out to Dance; music from DJ
Triana; a large silent auction;
complimentary hors d’oeuvres
and a cash bar. Tickets are $45
in advance (visit www.mbcc.
at rehab facilities who faced the
unknown with newly acquired
disabilities.
“Initially, when patients are in
the hospital, once they are past
concerns over survival and questions
over lost function like, ‘Am
I going to walk?’ and ‘Am I going
to talk,” that are very important,
there is also a deep searching of
‘Who am I now?’” says Dr. Rafal.
With compassion and a more
holistic approach, we look at the
whole person and all evidence
based treatments that can make a
difference. With this perspective,
Dr. Rafal works with his patients.
being open to what might be effective
and makes sense for that
individual. For example, he says,
a person may find acupuncture
or physical therapy to be helpful
for healing and pain management,
but may still need a knee
replacement. It is not necessarily
an either/or.
Ultimately, says Dr. Rafal,
“What I really want to find for
the patients I treat is, what will
Survey about Open Space and Recreation in Medway
Open for Comment:
The Town of Medway seeks
public participation in the update
of their seven-year
Open Space and
Recreation Plan
The Town of Medway’s Open
Space and Recreation Plan Task
Force is updating the Town’s
Open Space and Recreation Plan
to guide the Town in how it should
protect, maintain and improve its
open spaces, parks, natural areas,
and recreational facilities. Medway’s
last Open Space and Recreation
Plan (OSRP) was written
in 2010, and is required to be
updated every seven years. Town
John’s
New England
family owned and operated for 45 years
staff and Task Force members
are undertaking the revision efforts
necessary for the update, but
public involvement in the process
is sought to better understand
the needs of the community, and
to meet the requirements of the
Massachusetts Executive Office
of Energy and Environmental
Affairs, the state agency that approves
OSRPs.
Medway Lions
Bottles and Cans
Program Needs
Your Help
Medway Lions wants to thank
all who have supported the club
by donating redeemable cans
and bottles to the monthly drive
or dropping redeemables in the
shed at West Medway Liquors
on Main Street. However, the
club has seen a decrease in the
monthly intake of bottles and
cans over the last few years. This
affects the club’s ability to support
the numerous town programs
and activities to the extent
that members want to see continued.
The monthly bottles and
cans drive is the club’s largest
source of funding for the club’s
community donations. Some of
the ways the proceeds have benefited
the town include donations
to: the town’s two food pantries
($2,400/year), Medway High
School Scholarships ($1500/
year), Medway High School
Peer Counselors’ training program,
Medway Middle School
Environmental Trip, Medway
Day, the Holiday Fund, the Fall
Prevention Program, Medway
Public Library Summer Lunch
Program and numerous other efforts,
all in Medway.
Medway Lions is seeking resident’s
help to increase participation
in the monthly drive. The
next Medway Lions Club collection
will be on Saturday, October
14 beginning at 9 a.m.
Residents are reminded that
redeemable bottles and cans
should be placed at the curbside
by 9 a.m. the morning of the
drive.
The Lions Bottles and Cans
collection shed in front of West
Medway Liquors on Main Street
may be a convenient alternative
for many residents. The Medway
Lions Club appreciates
those who currently support the
club’s fundraising and recycling
program and will continue to use
proceeds exclusively for Medway
community efforts.

Medway Public Library Summer
Lunch Program—THANK YOU
When school is out for the
summer and no longer providing
lunch, many families struggle to
bridge the gap. This summer the
Medway Public Library piloted a
program to nourish both bodies
and minds. Each Thursday the
Library offered story time for
young children and activities for
all ages, as well as a free lunch for
all children and their caretakers.
The Medway Public Library
would like to thank all the businesses,
organizations, and individuals
whose generosity enabled
us to offer the Summer Lunch
program. We appreciate all they
have done for the community.
We also wish to thank the Friends
of the Library and the many individuals
who volunteered their
time for this program.
Lunches were funded by the
Lions Club, the Medway Community
Church, Whole Foods
Market, Restaurant 45, Direct
Tire & Auto Service, Medway
Oil, Roche Brothers, Friends of
the Medway Library, and numerous
individuals. Garelick Farms
provided milk for all eight weeks
of lunches.
Thanks to generous donations
from Whole Foods and
Medway Pride Day, as well as
anticipated donations from local
businesses and organizations, the
Library hopes to be able to provide
lunches three days a week
next summer. If you would like
this program or volunteer to
help serve lunches please contact
Groundbreaking on Chicken Brook Boardwalk
Thank you to all the volunteers
who made the Chicken
Brook Boardwalk a reality!
Today the Medway Trail
Taskforce and the Open Space
Committee broke ground on the
Chicken Brook Boardwalk that
will link trails between Adams
Street and Lovering Street in
Medway. This linkage represents
significant progress toward the
goal of creating a 3.5 mile long
ecological and recreation corridor
running from the Upper
Charles Trail in Holliston to
Choate Park. The northern and
southern pieces already exist but
are not connected. The Chicken
Brook Boardwalk is one of two
needed linkages to complete the
trail.
The project began in 1997
with initial discussions about
turning Medway’s old farm paths
into usable walkways. In 1999 the
Town approved a master plan
that included this goal. Since
then the Town has acquired several
properties and volunteers
have built trails, one section at a
time. This year volunteers are in
the process of building and installing
3 footbridges along the
trail extension from the High
School to Chicken Brook. The
Chicken Brook Boardwalk was
engineered by Beals & Thomas
and will be installed by Goliath
Tech Co.
The final linkage connecting
Lovering Street to Idylbrook is
planned for 2018.
Chair of the Medway Trail
Taskforce Jim Wieler said “A few
of us have been involved in this
project from the beginning and
it is extremely gratifying to reach
this major milestone toward creating
a continuous north/south
link trail for the residents of
Medway.” He continued, “This
project would not have been possible
without the ongoing support
of many Town boards in particular
the Board of Selectmen,
the Community Preservation
Committee, Open Space and
Conservation Commission and
Department of Public Service. I
would like to acknowledge and
thank my fellow Taskforce members
Charlie Ross, Paul Atwood,
and Michael Murphy.
Additionally, the entire Taskforce
would like to thank Glenn
A Love of Color:
Medway Artist
Maria Babb
By J.D. O’Gara
Medway artist Maria Babb
will be one of over 65 artists featured
in the upcoming Natick
Artist Open Studio event on
October 21st and 22nd. She
will be showing her watercolor
and acrylic paintings of nature,
landscapes, buildings, people and
beyond.
“I started out doing watercolor
painting, but I have
recently extended that out to
acrylic,” says Babb, a native of
Puerto Rico who moved from
Natick to Medway last year.
“Acrylic, if you make a mistake,
you can paint over it. You cannot
do that with watercolor. It’s a
one-time deal.”
Babb was always artistic,
president of her school’s art club
in high school, but since she got
married young, she says, her art
“took a total background. I put
all of that aside and I had a career,”
she says. Five years ago,
the artist “decided to give it another
shot, something I always
wanted to do, and finally I’m
able to do so.”
She began with watercolor
classes at the Mass Audubon Society,
Broadmoor in Natick. Not
only did she enjoy the painting,
but, she says, “I met the most
wonderful group of women in
that class. It was the people that
kept me going.”
As she progresses with her
painting, Babb finds that she is
drawn to paint many subjects.
“Some people stick to one
particular subject,” she says,
“But I am all over the place. I
paint landscapes, still lifes, I do
a lot of buildings, and I like to
paint scenes of the ocean. I do
people sometimes, but the one
thing that you do see that is
pretty consistent in my paintings
is I like bright colors. That’s another
reason I switched from watercolor
to acrylic.” Babb credits
her upbringing in Puerto Rico
for her love of vibrant color.
The painter also enjoys painting
details.
“I like painting that looks realistic.
It’s hard to accomplish that
with watercolor. Acrylic is the
complete opposite. You can be as
loose as you want or as detailed
as you want.”
Babb points to her sisters as
her “biggest fans. They’re always
showing off my work, if you
will,” she laughs.
Painting, says Babb, also provides
relaxation.
“Painting is very therapeutic
Millis Volleyball: Rich Experience Among
Younger Players
By Christopher Tremblay
Millis High School finds
themselves in a unique situation
when it comes to athletics.
Being a school with such a small
enrollment, Mohawk Coaches
are allowed to use middle school
athletes to complete their rosters.
Although having a team of young
athletes isn’t always helpful in the
current situation, it can surely
come in handy as the athletes
grow.
One such team that has reaped
the benefits of having young athletes
grow is the girls’ volleyball
squad. Under Coach Lisa Farese,
many of this year’s players began
their careers on the middle school
squad. This year’s team consists
of seven seniors who first stepped
onto a volleyball court in the Millis
Middle School and have continued
to improve over the last
five or six years.
“In the early days, we typically
had seventh, eighth and ninth
graders playing on the freshman
team, and they took a beating in
the Tri-Valley League. Changes
were made when my current senior
class was in middle school;
we now fielded a middle school
team rather than a freshman
one,” Farese. “The seven seniors
experienced this journey for the
first time and they were the pioneers.”
Farese went on to say that
in the beginning the program
housed in excess of more than 20
girls, where you could only field
six at a time. Not only was this a
challenge, but the coach and the
girls never knew who was playing
on any given day.
“For a few of them, they knew
that they would be playing on that
day if they were given a jersey,”
the coach said. “It was something
that we all, needed to adjust to.
Our program in essence went
through some growing pains.”
Fast forward to this year, their
senior campaign, were Millis volleyball
has those seven (now seniors)
as the heart and soul of the
program while also possessing a
bond like no other.
Leading the Mohawk’s onto
the court and into battle each
and every game are senior cocaptains
Allie Smith and Cassie
Ford. Smith, who missed almost
her entire junior season, plays on
the right side and is a defensive
specialist and while her serve is
something to be contended with
it’s her leadership that is more
than spectacular. Her counterpart
is an outside hitter, who has
picked up her defensive game,
and her serve, too, is deadly but
as a captain she has been focusing
on building the team.
“It has definitely been a journey.
We have always been the
younger kids going up against
the juniors and seniors, but we’ve
made a difference and this year
in addition to the seniors we also
have a good group of younger
girls as well,” Ford said. “Chemistry
has improved, because we’ve
been together for so long and taking
part in varsity games when we
were younger.”
Smith agrees that it was a
tough road to get where they are
today, but the sacrifice was all
These seven seniors in the Millis volleyball team this year have grown with the program since 7th grade,
being allowed to play at such a young age, because Millis is such a small town. Now, they are the team’s
strength. Photo by Coach Lisa Farese.
worth it.
“That freshman year was difficult.
We were not only going up
against girls two and three years
older than us, but we were still
building our skills as a progressively
young team,” Smith said.
“Now as seniors, things are clicking,
and I feel that it’s going to be
a great year for us, especially having
struggled through the years.”
While the coach reiterated
that the team is still not the tallest,
their hearts are in every action
that they perform while on
and off the court.
“They have all had their own
experience with position, level
and won-lost records, but the one
thing they will not be denied is
their team-first attitude,” Farese
said. “I had spoken to them as a
group during tryouts about the
upcoming season and they all
came out of the gates ready to
take on the year and the journey
together. They have their goals
and will not be held back.”
Not having height may hurt
the team in some way, but Smith
isn’t all that worried.
“We’ve always been a short
team, but one with talent,” she
said. “We give it everything we
have and are very excited about
the possibilities of this season. We
are also sick about being the underdog
and plan on doing something
about it.”
The other five seniors that
have made the journey are Lydia
Flaherty, a middle hitter/blocker
and outside hitter; Emily Bicalho,
defense and front row; Yasmine
Azzouz, a left-handed setter;
Mandi Payne, libero and Molly
Kane, offensive coordinator of
the team.
Although the shortest girl on
the court at 5 feet tall, Payne’s
game is much taller. She has
worked hard in the off-season to
improve her defense, is truly the
voice of the Mohawks and according
to her coach one of the
most energetic individuals she
has seen during her many years
in volleyball.
Flaherty is also on the shorter
side at 5 foot 4 inches but she too
brings an inspiring attitude to the
court. The senior not only brings
levity to the tough situations and
challenges, but she is always looking
for the light at the end of the
tunnel and will make sure everyone
is focused on the end result.
Bicalho, according to her
coach, has speed like lightning
and if there is any way to get to
a ball to keep it in play she will
do it. She never gives up on anything.
Azzouz works at strategically
leading her team past opponents.
Being that the setter position is
similar to that of a football quarterback,
she is leads the team with
confidence and quietly leads by
example.
Kane, who shares time with
Azzouz, has a powerful voice that
can be heard from anywhere on
the court and will do anything in
her power to encourage her team
to fight harder.
The team opened the season
with a victory over Bellingham,
something which has been scarce
in Millis volleyball over the past
few years.
“We are definitely stronger
this year, and that win was a good
feeling, especially where we’ve
been in the past,” Ford said. “Volleyball
is not just about strength
though, there is a mental aspect
to it as well and at this point in
our careers we all know it well.”
As the Millis volleyball team
looks to improve its program on a
continual basis it can look back at
the teams it fielded in the 2000’s
where they captured State Titles
in 2003 and 2008.
“I have had teams that have
won with ease, and I have had
teams that struggled to the last
point of a championship match,
the Millis Coach said. “I am
thrilled to have this team this
year, led by these seven seniors,
because everything they earn will
be meaningful to them, and it’s
something that I don’t think that
I can conceptualize the possibilities
at this point.”

Millis Girls Soccer Team Banking On Experience
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
Based on the talent that’s returned
and last year’s 11-5-4
overall record, the Millis girls soccer
team very likely can achieve
the goals that coach Steve Bailen
has listed for the 2017 season.
The 53-year-old Bailen, who’s
in his third year as the Mohawks’
coach, lost only three seniors to
graduation and has 11 starters
back, numbers that should help
Millis compete admirably in the
Tri Valley League’s small division.
“We should be a contender
for the league title,’’ he said. “We
should also be able to qualify for
the tourney again, but I’d like to
see us advance further than last
year. We won our opener against
Sacred Heart (Kingston) but lost
in the next round to East Bridgewater.’’
The strengths of this year’s
team are many. “We’ve got experience
because of many returnees,’’
Bailen emphasized. “We’re
athletic, our team chemistry is
good, and so, too, is our work
ethic. Many of our players have
speed, quickness and a high soccer
IQ., but we could still be better
in those areas.’’
The Mohawks’ senior captains
— midfielder Taylor Davis,
defender Julia Krauss and striker
Kaylee Francis — are quality
leaders who were honorablemention
all-stars in the TVL last
year.
“Taylor is a vocal leader,’’
Bailen said. “She controls midfield
and her transition game is
excellent. Julia is vocal, too. She’s
aggressive, knows when to attack
and has good instincts. Kaylee
scored five goals and assisted on
seven others last year. She’s an
accurate shooter who can control
the ball. A good passer, she leads
by example.’’
Sophomore goalie Caileen
Adams is another major plus.
She turned in eight shutouts last
year. “Caileen has a super work
ethic, she’s athletic and fearless,’’
Bailen said. “She instinctive, able
to make big saves.’’
Bailen’s corps of defenders
blends youth and experience.
Besides Krauss, they include junior
Riley Donovan, sophomores
Sydney Bailen (coach’s daughter)
and Alexi Vaillancourt, and senior
Jenny Krauss (Julia’s twin
sister).
“Riley is a timely attacker,’’
Bailen said. “She’s athletic and
a leader on defense. Sydney is
strong, her footwork is good, and
she’s tenacious. She can also play
striker (five goals last year). Alexi
has a high soccer IQ and knows
how to move the ball out of traffic.
Jenny is reliable, works hard
and displays good ball control.’’
The Mohawks’ midfielders
rate high on speed and skills. Besides
Davis, they include seniors
Meg Hourihan, Kat Govani and
Pauliny Smith and junior Ciara
Moynihan. Smith can also be utilized
as a defender.
“Meg is aggressive, has good
foot skills and she’s got speed,’’
Bailen noted. “Kat is athletic,
has speed and can push the ball
forward. Pauliny is versatile, aggressive
and kicks the ball well.
Ciara has exceptional speed and
good foot skills and she can shoot
and set up plays.’’
Besides Francis on the forward
line, Bailen has a capable group
of skilled players. They include
seniors Madison Shearns and
Kylee Vaillancourt and junior
Jessica Krauss and Cheyenne
Whelan.
“Madison is tall, aggressive,
fast and closes in on the ball
quickly,’’ he noted. “Kylee has
speed and she can pass and shoot
(four goals, three assists last year).
Jessica is aggressive, has speed,
good foot skills, and a high soccer
IQ. Cheyenne is tenacious
and her stamina is outstanding.’’
Bailen, who coached the boys
varsity for three seasons, will employ
an up-tempo style, blending
speed, tenacity and a variety of
skills. “Our players will display
high energy from start to finish,’’
he said. “And, the key is for all 11
girls to be on the same page.’’
A coach whose philosophy
puts a high priority on “competing
hard to win,’’ he also works
diligently to see his players reach
their potential and to enjoy the
value of soccer. “Soccer, like
other sports, can teach good life
lessons,’’ said Bailen, who works
as director of business development
for GES Corporation.
“Overcoming adversity, learning
to lead and be responsible, setting
goals and being good teammates
are lessons that sports teach. I
also stress that it’s important to
give back to the community and
those people who support the
squad.’’
The Mohawks had a successful
campaign last year as they
posted 11 victories and gained
tourney experience. They’ve
started slowly, posting a 0-1-2
record in the early going this season,
but their strengths should be
major assets as the 2017 season
moves along.
captains, from left, Kaylee Francis,
Taylor Davis, and Julia Krauss.
Millis Schools Host Learning Tour
By J.D. O’Gara
Our home equity loans
are as YOU nique
as the reasons that
you need one.
Millis 8th grade students paired up with Superintendent coaches to
explain how they interact with teachers and use technology in the
classroom in a Learning Tour Millis Public Schools hosted in September.
On September 20th, Millis Public
Schools got to show superintendents
of Massachusetts districts just
what they’re doing right. The district,
considered a “Catalyst” district
leader for MAPLE (Mass. Personalized
Learning EdTech Consortium),
hosted a Learning Tour for coaches
of 75 new Superintendents currently
in the NSIP (New Superintendent.
Induction Program). The
full day included classroom visits,
a faculty panel, a lunch discussion
with faculty and Principals, students
paired up with Superintendents to
show what they know and can do
and facilitation by Dr. David Dockterman,
a Lecturer on Education at
the Harvard Graduate School of
Education focusing on the translation
of research into innovative and
effective practice.
Some of the goals of the Learning
Tour were to help clarify what
“personalized learning” means, how
technology can effectively add to
learning and teaching, how teacher
roles are changing and what teachers
need to be supported, as well as
how principals’ roles and needs are
changing.
“The Millis Public Schools truly
are a bright spot in Massachusetts in
their use of technology to personalize
learning,” says Ann Koufman
Frederick, Chief Academic Officer
at MAPLE.
“I am very proud of what the visiting
Superintendents saw and heard
today!” says Nancy Gustafson,
Superintendent of Millis Public
Schools. “The classroom visits
showed strong student engagement,
deep learning and highly effective
uses of technology to enhance
learning. The teachers shared insights
into what they do in planning
personalized instruction to meet students’
needs and encourage greater
ownership of learning.”
In addition to the classroom visits,
faculty panel and lunch discussion,
24 students from Grades 5-12
met in pairs with the Superintendent
coaches to discuss in depth how they
use technology, how teachers personalize
their classrooms and instruction,
how teachers connect with
students and how technology plays
into their organization and learning.
“Our students spoke quite eloquently
about how connected and
collaborative the culture is and how
their teachers use technology to help
them learn better,” says Gustafson,
who says the vision of personalized
learning is clear and happening
in Millis. “The proof is when students
can explain the why and how
of using technology to learn more,
deeper, better.”
Millis, Ashland
Soccer Matches
Re-scheduled For
Gillette Stadium
By KEN HAMWEY
Staff Sports Writer
The Millis and Ashland highschool
soccer matches that were
slated for Sept. 18 at Gillette Stadium
have been re-scheduled for
Oct. 10. The installation of a new
artificial turf surface forced the
postponement.
The boys and girls varsity
teams from both towns will be
making their first appearances on
the New England Revolution’s
home turf, which also just happens
to be where the Patriots and
quarterback Tom Brady compete.
The boys contest will begin
at 5 p.m. and the girls match is
scheduled for 7 p.m. The junior
varsity teams from both schools
will conduct a scrimmage during
the intermission breaks for
both the boys and girls. At 4:30,
the Millis police and fire departments,
along with the Ashland
police, will serve as color guards
for the event. Also, youth teams
from the two towns will get an opportunity
to run across the field.
Installation of the new surface
began on Monday, Sept.
11, and Steve Bailen, the Millis
coach, was informed that the
process would take two weeks to
complete. Bailen was the key in
securing Gillette as the site. “I’ve
got a friend who works at Gillette
Stadium and he informed me
about the Revolution’s desire to
invite high school soccer teams
from various communities to play
at Gillette,’’ Bailen said. “I met
with the Revs, got the details and
eventually got the approval.’’
The primary stipulation to
play in Foxboro involved both
communities selling 500 Revolution
tickets each. One thousand
tickets were sold, ensuring that
Millis and Ashland will compete
at the prominent facility.
“When I got the approval, I
chose Ashland to be our opponent,’’
Bailen said. “I thought
about what school would provide
a good competitive matchup. I
knew that Medfield and Medway
had already played at Gillette.
So, I called Traci Sipniewski, the
Ashland girls coach, and we both
felt that Millis and Ashland could
sell the tickets. When Ashland’s
administration approved the site,
we were all set.’’
Bailen said that both the boys
and girls players from Millis were
disappointed about the delay but
now they’re eagerly anticipating
the matches. “Playing at Gillette
will be a great experience not
only for the high school players,
but also for both communities,’’
Bailen said. “Hopefully, it’ll be a
great town-wide experience.”
Maximize Fall and Winter Energy
Savings with Simple Tips
By Scott McGillivray
As temperatures decrease
during the fall and winter
months, energy usage and costs
tend to climb. These five energysaving
tips for your home will ensure
the comfort of your family
and your wallet.
1. Adjust your thermostat.
Lower the heat on your thermostat
while you are away from
home and before you go to bed.
Better yet, invest in a programmable
thermostat so you don’t
have to give it a second thought.
2. Seal gaps around windows
and doors. Cracks and gaps
around windows and doors can
let cold drafts into your home.
Weather-stripping or caulking
will seal these problem areas and
keep your home warmer, without
having to turn up the heat.
3. Insulate well to protect
your home from the cold. Add
insulation to your basement
walls, headers or attic to make
a noticeable difference in the
temperature of your home and
its energy consumption. A mineral
wool product specifically designed
for thermal performance,
such as Roxul Comfortbatt, is
ideal. This type of batt insulation
will also provide protection from
fire, moisture and unwanted
noise. Adding insulation is one
of the simplest and most-cost
effective ways to increase home
energy efficiency.
4. Make use of natural sources
of heat. Pull back your curtains
to let natural light in. The sun
can help to warm a room with
its rays on a bright fall or winter
day. If there are any large windows
in your home that don’t
receive much sunlight, keep the
curtains closed to form a barrier
from the cold.
5. Use ceiling fans to your advantage.
In the winter, set the fan
to rotate clockwise. The blades
will pull the air up and around,
redirecting warm air that rises
back down into the living space.
The effect can help you lower
your thermostat by two degrees
in the winter. While cutting
back on energy may seem more
challenging as the weather gets
colder, it doesn’t have to be.
There are many no- or low-cost
methods to conserve energy that
can provide consistent savings
over time.
Home Improvement Projects For Your Fall To-Do List
Homeowners know that
maintaining a home can be a
year-round job. No home is immune
to wear and tear, and
homeowners who want to protect
their real estate investments
should try to stay two steps ahead
to ensure their homes do not succumb
to the elements or become
outdated and unappealing to
prospective buyers.
Fall has become a season that’s
synonymous with home improvement,
but homeowners need not
wait until the leaves begin changing
colors to start planning their
next projects. The following are
a few items homeowners can add
to their fall home improvement
to-do lists.
Roof inspection
Less precipitation tends to fall
during the warmer months than
during the late fall and winter. As
a result, homeowners may not be
aware of leaky roofs until autumn
has come and gone. But waiting
until winter to inspect the roof
can prove disastrous, as weather
conditions will not be conducive
to inspection and increased precipitation
may result in potentially
costly damage. Leaky roofs
can be easily identified by looking
for water stains on interior
ceilings. Once you see a stain,
you can climb onto the roof to
identify the location of the leak
and fix it before winter rains and
snowfall turn the problem into
something much larger. Inspect
your ceilings for signs of leaking
after a strong rainfall, and then
address any leaks immediately.
Gutter cleaning
While some homeowners
prefer to delay their gutter cleaning
projects until late fall, those
whose homes are surrounded by
trees may need to schedule two
such projects. Gutters clogged
with leaves and other debris can
cause serious roof damage, and
that damage can extend all the
way inside a home. In addition,
clogged gutters make great nesting
areas for insects or critters.
Always stand on a ladder when
cleaning gutters, wearing gloves
to remove items by hand and
dropping leaves and debris into
a trash can below. Standing on
the roof and leaning over gutters
greatly increases your risk of injury.
If the gutters are clear when
you first examine them in early
fall, you can wait until later in the
season to give them a complete
and thorough cleaning. Once you
have finished clearing the gutters,
you can use a hose to run water
through them and the downspouts
to confirm everything is
functioning properly.
Window and doorway
inspection
Before temperatures start
dropping once again, homeowners
will want to inspect their
windows and doorways for leaks.
Over time, cracks can develop
around windows and doorways,
and while such cracks are rarely
noticeable when the weather outside
is warm, they can be quite
obvious and very costly if they remain
unsealed come the start of
winter. Cold air can enter a home
through cracks around windows
and doorways, and many homeowners
who don’t suspect leaks
may respond by turning up the
thermostats in their homes. That
Autumn is a great time to inspect patios that might have endured some
wear and tear during the heavy usage seasons of spring and summer.
can prove quite expensive over
a full winter. Choose a windy
autumn day to place a hand by
windows and external doorways
in your home to see if you can
feel drafts. If you can, seal these
cracks as soon as possible.
Patio cleanup
Patios are popular hangouts
during spring and summer, and
that can result in a lot of wear
and tear. Once you store patio
furniture for the winter, inspect
your entire patio to determine if
it needs any refurbishing. While
certain patio projects may be best
left for spring, you can still clean
any stained areas around the grill
and look for cracks in the sidewalk
that need to be addressed.
Preparing for fall home improvement
projects ahead of
time can help homeowners complete
projects in a timely manner
and ensures they won’t be forced
to brave the winter elements
when refurbishing their homes.

were thrown a curve ball, Robin deftly handled the issue and our
anxieties with skill and compassion. She listened to our criteria,
from what we absolutely required down to our nit-picking desires,
and strove to find us the perfect fit. I would highly recommend
Robin to any first time or experienced buyer.”
