For imperfect lessons th ey had queer ways of punishing. If a pupil mi ssed a
French lesson, s he would have to s tand a t the front with a paper pinned on her
head on whi ch was th e word Paresesse (Iazy )-quite different fro m s taying in until
4.30, or writing o ut one hundred lin es. If a lesson was m iss ed in En glish, Turkish
or Arabic, the pupil would be deprived of certain privileges.
All kinds of fancy-work were taught, a nd if th e work was not clean, or was
carelessly done, th e culprit had to stand for the remainder of the les son, with her
work in her hands s o th at a ll might see it.
Th e head teacher re ceiv ed SI ,500 a year, with dwelling, board and serv a nts
free, and twice a year a trip to any part of E u ro pe .
If you wish to travel in a ny d irection from J eru salem ex cept to Jaffa, you have
to either take a wag on or go on a camel. Cab fare is ve ry cheap ; one can ride
two miles for on e cent, or have a five -hour drive for ten cents.
