ON E Day in August when walking though a field of wheat which was being- cut, I came upon a nest of four young helpless rabbits, or rather hares. I left them, wondering it their mother would ev er find them, now that the appearance of the locality was so c1lilnged. Would they not be left to starve, or be killed by their enemies as they lay so helpless and so exposed in the open field? I therefore resolved to come back in the evening to look after their fate; but I was prevented, and did not get back till the next morning, when I found them shivering with cold, and very weak. Knowing that they had been deserted, I put them in my pockets and brought them home, having as yet only a faint idea how I should nurse them. My first resort was tIle fountain-pen filler which had done good service with animals a little older. I even made a miniature nursing bottle, with the tender shoots of grasse" for a nipple, but all was in vain. So I called the cat and offered her the remaining mille She lapped it up, and while doing so did not even seem to notice the young rabbits lying so limp upon the floor. Then the idea came to me to try to substitute these helpless creatures for her own kittens, which were about three Jays old. This [ did in her absence, and then watched. \Vhen' she came back she looked very much surprised, but went into her basket and curled herself up . .\fler a while I left her, knowing that I could do nothing more. It was an experiment involving animal instinct, animal love and selfishness; and Nature had to he left to work it out herself. \Vhich of these conquered each reader must reason for himself from the result of the experiment. I doubt, however, ifany will come to any definite conclusion. On returning an hour later, I saw the cat with a rabbit in her mouth walking to the barn. When she saw me she seemed much annoyed, stopped, laid down the rabbit, and ran off. On picking it up [ found it was unharmed. [therefore carried it back to the basket, where [ found only one rabbit left. \Vhat had she done with the other two, and what was she going to do with this one? I now watched her carefully, at the same time keeping well out of her sight After a while she cline back to her basket and again picked the rabbit up by the neck. very gently, ami again went with it to the barn and there disappeared in the loft; after a while ,h~ came back for the last one. I now knew that she would adopt them and that they were safe. Her object was merely to get them away from my influence, which had wrought such change in her beloved kittens, During- the following days, pussy, cat-like, was very friendly and purred a great deal around me. This I took to mean, ., Please stay away from my young ones." I respected her wishes and did not try to find them. After five or six days, how ever. I thought it necessary in the interests of science and the safety of my proteges tl' see what the little ophans were doing. I found them quite contented and apparently doing well under the tender care of one of the most cruel types of the lion race, who before had lulled and devoured many of their kind. Thus they grew and thrived. But the time must come when pussy would be no longer able to care for them, and One day when I came to the loft I found one of
