EDITOR’S NOTE
FORTUNE
FAVOURS
THE BRAVE
It’s another issue full of inspirational
reads. This month we pay tribute to those
brave amongst us, who have taken risks
and reaped the benefits. These strongwilled
individuals have gone against the
norm to do things and have come out
winning.
Take our charming cover personality,
Michelle Goh for starters. She’s proved
the naysayers wrong by leaving a stable
corporate life to start a business that’s
not just lucrative but also fast gaining
popularity and growing in numbers.
Above all the benefits she has gained from
venturing out of a cushy life, the one that
stands out the most and gives her utmost
satisfaction is the call to help others.
The road to success may not have been
an easy one, but Michelle nevertheless
braved the long, hard days before she saw
her hard work turn into money. Like her,
there are many out in the world that move
to the beat of their own drum and prove
that altering the tempo can bring out the
winner in us. Take the architects of renowned creations, who have
taken abandoned buildings and breathed new life into them. They
saw potential in fixing something broken and making it anew.
In the wake of technological advances, the time is ripe to grab
the bull by its horns and take formidable steps to making ideas
come to fruition. Throw a little caution to the wind, and move
forward with that nagging idea that’s just begging to be brought
out to the forefront. You’ll never know what fortune awaits unless
you try!

Celebrating 70 Years of Heritage
Georgetown, Penang.
22 JULY 2017
Ferrari’s 70th Anniversary celebrations in
Malaysia recently concluded with a grand
gala dinner at the historical Fort Cornwallis
in Georgetown, Penang. In alignment with
the brand’s global festivities, Naza Italia,
the sole official importer and distributor of
Ferrari in Malaysia, organised an exclusive
schedule of events.
It began with a grand rally of Ferraris
travelling in unison from the Naza Italia
Showroom in Kuala Lumpur to Penang’s
UNESCO World Heritage site. As one of
the largest of its kind held locally, the rally
provided an unforgettable driving experience
for participating Ferraristi. The 50 Ferraris
then lined up in an impressive formation
along Jalan Padang Kota Lama, just in front
of the Penang City Hall.
Datuk Wira Hj. SM Faisal Tan Sri SM
Nasimuddin, NAZA World Group Executive
Chairman, said, “With the Pearl of the
Orient being such a historical gem and a
city where heritage is both highly regarded
and celebrated by local and international
visitors alike, it made the ideal setting in
which to gather and reflect on Ferrari’s many
accomplishments.”
Naza Italia offered a glimpse of that during
an elegant gala dinner at Fort Cornwallis,
where it introduced the limited edition
LaFerrari Aperta - the special series model
launched to mark Ferrari’s 70th Anniversary.
The gala dinner hosted by Datuk Wira
Hj. SM Faisal was graced by Y.Bhg Dato’
Maimunah binti Mohd Sharif, Penang Mayor
and YB Danny Law Heng Kiang, EXCO
Penang State Tourism Development &
Culture.
Several cars of Ferrari’s yesteryears,
including the Ferrari 328 GTB, Ferrari Mondial
& Ferrari 348 were displayed on the grounds, as
a nod to the Cavallino Rampante’s past.
As part of its corporate social
responsibility programme and through its
charitable foundation, Yayasan Tan Sri SM
Nasimuddin, Naza Italia presented cheques
for a total donation of RM105,000 to three
homes in Penang – Pusat Jagaan Permata
Kasih, St. Joseph’s Home and The Salvation
Army Penang Children’s Home.
Bhd, the official distributor of Vespa scooters
in Malaysia, is proud to announce that the
popular Vespa S125 model now comes with
an I-GET engine.
“We are proud to launch the new S125
I-GET at the start of our NAZA Merdeka
Autofair 2017. The I-GET engine, which
stands for Italian Green Experience
Technology, is said to be a new approach
to the powertrain design and development,
with aims to increase the efficiency of
each element and improving performance
overall,” said Datuk Wira SM Faisal Tan
Sri SM Nasimuddin, Group Executive
The new powerplant is the result of a
design philosophy that sets new and more
advanced quality and reliability levels as
its primary objectives. Every aspect of the
design process was aimed at increasing the
efficiency of each individual component,
thereby working together to maximise
minimise consumption and emissions.
Deciding to quit the stable offerings of corporate life to venture into the unknown was not
a decision to be taken lightly. After 20 years in IT and Telecommunications as a marketer
and commercial project manager, 45-year-old Michelle Goh Seok Imm decided to call it
quits and pay heed to a greater calling – network marketing.
“The 9 to 6 pm rigid work platform started to feel stifling and I needed a break,” explains the married
Terengganu-born. “Joining Young Living as a distributor was truly by chance. I merely wanted to break
away from the conventional work platform.”
According to Michelle, the company did not have an office in Malaysia at the time she started out.
“I wish I could say I knew what I was doing when I joined,” she divulges. “Honestly, I did not realise the
impact Young Living would have on my life till much later.”
The idea of a product line that empowered Michelle to better
her health and wellness seemed captivating. “I believed that if I
liked the idea of being in control of my health and helping myself
get better when I’m down with daily ailments, then the people
around me would want this as well.”
Malaysia, Michelle felt, was ripe for the picking. With
unhealthy dietary habits and poor health issues, she realised ours
was a society that appreciated helping ourselves whether through
Internet research or sharing opinions with friends and family.
“I took my health for granted in my early years, much the
same as everyone else, but with age, little ailments become more
frequent,” she explains. “My low immunity, frequent down days
and my husband’s lack of quality sleep, got me to try a Young
Living starter kit and I fell madly in love with Frankincense! It
worked wonderfully for my husband and me, and I knew I had to
share this!”
“Two and half years later, I’m still sharing the goodness of the
oils. It is completely gratifying to have people come back to me
and tell me that the oils worked for them and that their health or
their family’s health has improved so much since using the oils.”
“This was the primary driver for the boom in my Young
Living business,” explains Michelle, an avid animal lover with
three rescued cats. “As the business grew exponentially, I decided
to focus on this full time.”
Michelle started out with Young Living at the end of
2014, and by 2015, she reached her first notable rank at Silver
and progressed to Gold in 2016 and Platinum early this year.
“Currently, I am a Platinum ranked distributor with a team
of almost 3000 people, and I spend most of my time managing
and leading the group with the help of my 19 Silver, Gold and
Platinum leaders. In two years, we have grown so much that the
numbers still astound me, and I am excited to see what 2018 has
in store for us.”
Much as any leader of a large business group structure, the
day involves operational issues, projections, planning, strategies,
brainstorming sessions and plenty of people management, since
she is in the business of people and networking!
“Today, I have achieved my highest income in my career to
date,” she shares enthusiastically. “I have no bosses above me, and
I lead my team with what I firmly believe is best for the business.”
“Today, I have achieved my
highest income in my career
to date. I have no bosses
above me, and I lead my team
with what I firmly believe is
best for the business.”
DOING IT DIY STYLE
While driving her business is the mainstay of her daily life, in
the backroom of all the bustling activity is a DIY queen.
“I have always been in love with DIY, and with Young Living,
it opened up a whole new hobby for me,” she enthuses. “I now get to
DIY my skincare, with the same ingredients as the over the counter
skincare products, but without harsh chemicals and using more of
the right ingredients, and at a fraction of what you pay elsewhere!”
“My mum has always been creative, and I inherited her genes
for sure,” she laughs. “She was always into crochet, macrame and
can be deliciously creative in her cooking as well, sometimes
despite the lack of ingredients!”
Michelle feels creativity nourishes her soul and makes her
happy. “With DIY skin care, there is that added satisfaction that
the completed project is a product that is great for the skin, makes
me beautiful and is cost-saving. Now, what is there not to like?”
21 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017 | TM
Michelle Goh
DIY feeds Michelle’s creative side, and according to her, it’s
simple and fun to do. “You do not have to invest in a lot for this
hobby as it is mostly things that you already have at home and
the result can be satisfying and using it can be very gratifying.”
Michelle does a broad range of DIY products such as home
care, self-care, skin care and cosmetics. The range is diverse from
products such as hand wash, body wash, body oil shower, soaps,
scrubs, masks, mascaras, lip balms, lip tints, foot soaks, hair
serums, face serums, face moisturisers, facial toners, hydrating
face mist, cuticle oils, body lotion, body balms, medicated balms
to fragrance stones, mosquito repellents and bug sprays.
“There are plenty of simple DIY projects that I have replaced
in my home instead of buying from the
store,” Michelle shares. “For example,
foot and body scrubs that only require
table salt or sugar, cooking oil and
essential oils. These are ingredients
readily available at home, it takes only
two minutes to mix them all, and you can
easily make more when you need a top
up, without much fuss or needing to go to
the store. On top of that, cost-savings can
be substantial.”
According to Michelle, people are
savvier these days. It is not so much
about spending less than it is about
whether something is worth paying
for. “DIY is a great way for people to
find this out. When you know how to
do things yourself, you understand the
details of what makes a high priced
product costlier than others, and once I found out that I have
paid that much for a product that is using fewer alternative
ingredients, I feel much better making my own. My skin has
reaped the benefits. This is also the best way to ensure that my
skin keeps healthy and beautiful since I know exactly what is
inside.”
“Malaysians are becoming more discerning crowd; they
understand the importance of wellness and health at a much
younger age than the generations before. Malaysian women take
more care in ensuring that their health and beauty products
have none or minimal chemicals, preferring to either DIY their
skincare or purchase from small, private vendors.”
“Two areas that have seen a huge boom are artisanal skin
care and artisanal homemade gifts,” she says. “Many women
have hobby businesses that sell artisanal skin care ranging
from natural face wash, toners and serums to medicated balms
for children and this has been successful for them. The other
category is homemade gifts for occasions and festivities such
as Christmas, New Year, birthdays and Mother’s Day our days
are so busy that store-bought presents are easy to get, but come
across as impersonal. People are growing to love personalised,
hand crafted presents, either bought from an artisan or even
better, made by the giver.”
Requests to sell her DIY products are many, but Michelle
says that’s not her focus. “I spend my time teaching DIY to my
team and have them train their teams. In turn, it’s ultimately
“I believe that
forcefully willing
an aim or a goal which
might not be your
destiny might backfire,
so the best thing to do
is to keep calm and be
focused, taking things
as they come.”
satisfying to see artisan products selling in bazaars, markets or
online.”
Having said that, Michelle has this advice, “Time is money,
if the project takes too long, it is not worth saving that money.”
The work-life balance
Balancing anything in life is always a struggle, according to
Michelle. “I believe it is easier to put your everything into
something than to have to balance between the two because it
splits your focus and your time. Balancing work and personal life
and a third category, self-care, is tough! I have to set a schedule
for personal (family and friends) and self-care to fulfil that
balance. Otherwise, it would all lean
towards work. It may seem odd, but I
do schedule in my lunches with family,
coffee time with friends, cooking
dinners and allocate time for me-time
activities.”
Michelle credits her Young Living
oils to keeping her zen. “Essential oils
have small molecules that easily absorb
through our nasal skin into our limbic
system, which controls and recognises
our emotions. So I often use essential oils
to help myself feel good. When you feel
good, your thoughts are more centred,
and your overall being can remain zen
and stress-free.”
At 45, Michelle has learnt to go
with the flow. “I believe that forcefully
willing an aim or a goal which might
not be your destiny might backfire, so the best thing to do is
to keep calm and be focused, taking things as they come. A
Chinese proverb says, ‘Women should flow like the river.’ So,
instead of worrying and planning too much, my time is better
spent sharpening my skill learning to navigate the waters.”
Today, Michelle thrives on her focus on leadership and
support of her team, continuously adapting and growing with
the business demands, which is an ongoing process.
Outside of that, she has set her intentions to re-evaluate
her priorities now that her team has 19 capable leaders, each
of them strong enough to spin-off on their own to lead and
manage their groups. “It is time to enjoy the fruits of my
2-years non-stop hard work. I want to spend more time reading,
learning, travelling and appreciating the simple things in life
and yes, to stop and smell the roses!”
Michelle travels a couple of times a year, half of the time for
work and the other half for leisure. “Last year, it was London,
Salt Lake City and New York, and the usual yearly trips to
Singapore and Bangkok. This year was France and Amsterdam
with upcoming trips to possibly Taiwan and China and the
usual Bangkok, and Singapore repeats.”
“I still have a bucket list of things to do, which I have
started on. I am excited moving forward and a driven person;
the sort who needs to focus on building something. What starts,
must end. As impatient as it sounds, I try not to show it. I am
an entrepreneur at heart and enjoying life at the moment.”
Deadmau5, a famed-name
with his latest album, stuff
a kind of raw energy that
at some point will sound
completely foreign, the new
compared to his previous
EDM work. It experiments
with all-out arrangements
different, defying
expectations with each track
in a surprising, yet absurdly
sophisticated way.
hold of the inherent hetero
sensuality of R&B and
repurpose it through the
lens of her own personal
struggles with love and
social issues. With powerpacked
singles like ‘Shake
tracks like ‘Insecurities’, Fin
displays Bennett’s ability
to shift between the soulful
undertones of R&B, the
confident voice of hip hop
and the saccharine vibes
of electronic, all in one
astonishingly insightful
was his trademark style,
transforming it with the
complex influences of rock
in his album Solar, named
after his two-year old
that this latest album was
meant to communicate
greater depth, to be
deliberately more
Inauspicious beginnings need
not be life sentences as these
iconic buildings show.
Text by Jennifer Choo
The Sydney Opera house may be one of the
world’s most recognisable buildings, but is less
well-known for its architect. Its Danish architect,
the late Jørn Utzon resigned from the job and
left Australia in disgust in 1966, seven years before
the opera house was completed, out of frustration
due to cost overruns, construction delays, looming
political tensions and merciless criticism. Utzon
neither saw the final product in person nor did
he ever return to Australia. The Parliament of
New South Wales issued a special motion of
condolence to honour Utzon’s life and work
posthumously. While Utzon’s tale was a perfect
storm of unfortunate events, it is not necessarily
an isolated case in the world of architecture
where buildings with unusual beginnings like the
Tropicana Aman Sales Gallery which used to be
an unused factory building or have split opinions
when they are completed have defied the odds
to become architectural landmarks. We take an
architectural tour through some of the world’s
most polarising buildings that were reviled for its
controversial designs but soon become a landmark
when completed.
THE HOME
‘La Maison du Fada’
Known locally as ‘La Maison du Fada’, or the
‘House of the Crazy’, Unité d’Habitation in Marseille was
designed by Swiss-French architect, Le Corbusier who is
considered by many as the father of modern architecture.
However, he is also referred by many as “the man who
ruined a century of cities” with his uncompromising
belief that the house should be “a machine for living [in]”
as immortalized in his radical polemic, Towards a New
Architecture.
Unité d’Habitation was intended to function as a
vertical city, a type of high-rise structure that expresses
Le Corbusier’s visions on urbanism, architecture, and
landscaping. It was an experiment in collective housing
and this austere concrete block is often considered the
founding work of Brutalism. Elevated on sculptural
pilotti (reinforced concrete columns) and topped by a
roof garden, the structure had 337 apartments in various
sizes – catering for studios to homes for families with up
to eight children. During the building’s opening in 1952,
Le Corbusier described it as “the first manifestation of an
environment suited to modern life” and UNESCO agreed to
this last year when the buiding along with 16 others built by
Le Corbusier was added to the World Heritage List.
Brazil’s most famous architect Oscar Niemeyer has
been credited as giving modernism a samba flair – and
one need only to look at the fluid swirling forms and
curving lines of any of his buildings to be convinced at
how through his filter, the rigor of European modernism
became as smooth as Brazilian jazz. However, not all his
designs were greeted with this universal acclaim and a
church in the Pampulha Architectural Complex is one of
them. Within the declaration of new works Heritage of
Humanity, it was declared a world heritage site by Unesco
in July 2016. The complex was built in the early 1940s on
the banks of an artificial lake in Belo Horizonte, featuring
one of the first modernist complexes and comprises of a
cultural and leisure centre, a yacht club and the Church
of St. Francis of Assisi. The wavy-topped church was
the centerpiece of the whole project that was completed
in 1942. However, it took the Catholic diocese 16 years
to resign itself to the design and finally consecrate the
building as a church.
Once dubbed Britain’s ugliest building, the
Trellick Tower in North Kensington was designed by
Ernö Goldfinger, the modernist Hungarian architect.
The 31-storey council block was built in 1972 with
utopian dreams and a faith in community spirit was
designed in the Brutalist style. It however, quickly
turned into the ‘Tower of Terror’ due to a combination
of bad management and over-optimistically planned
communal spaces that invited muggers, drug gangs,
and junkies. Nonetheless, its grim grey-brown concrete
towers have become a sort of emblem of Brutalist
bleakness and appeared in music videos by The
Verve, Blur, Tricky and Depeche Mode and several
TV programmes. It is also most likely an inspiration
for High-Rise, the dystopian 1975 novel by JG Ballard,
and features in Martin Amis’ black comedy London
Fields. In recent years, this Grade II listed block has
become an icon of London, appearing on T-shirts,
featuring in songs, films, and adverts, and attracting
visitors from far and wide. They’ve even had the
dubious honour of being turned into a trendy ‘high-rise
for hipsters’ with young designers and entrepreneurs
queuing up to make Trellick their new headquarter.
Most people who’ve visited Paris have
made a trip to the Louvre or the Musee d’Orsay but
with the troubling events besieging the city of lights
of late, attendances for 2016 were down with the
main absentees being sightseers from abroad. Yet at
to a rise in local visitors - an ironic bit of information
considering that it was denounced as a blight on the
skyline when it was first unveiled in 1977. Designed by
Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano, these architects are
now celebrated as national treasures and Pritzker Prize
laureates, but back then they were just young architects
starting out. Because they thought they had no chance
of winning such an immense commission, they worked
with complete freedom, creating a futuristic scaffold
frame with all the functional mechanics (like the lifts
and escalators) on the outside, rather than hidden
away behind a conventional facade. While this was
aesthetically daring, it was also supremely practical as
it freed up exhibition and performance space inside.
Its unconventional design was seen as a deliberate
affront to Haussmann’s symmetrical paradigm and
caused an uproar amongst the locals. Nonetheless,
with time, Parisians have taken the quirky Pompidou
to their hearts, and as the number of visitors show, it
has become as much a part of Paris as the Eiffel Tower
(another avant-garde structure which caused shock and
outrage in its day).
a potentially deadly adventure as it is a test of
to take on such challenges, we hazard a list of
10 most dangerous courses for you.
THE SWING
MERAPI GOLF
COURSE
hazards on a golf course are common,
as these usually are the difficult
obstacles, but a hazardous golf
course? Often carved out of the
forest, many courses lie on the
fringe of the backwoods. These places are also
home to crocodiles, venomous snakes, and
other deadly critters. Yet, the danger that
lurks in such places comes not only from
these creatures. There are also golf courses
built at the foothills of live volcanoes, near
geysers and close to minefields.
For those willing to raise their adrenaline
level while playing a round of golf, we put
together a list of the top 10 most hazardous
golf courses in the world:
1. Ocean Course Golf Course,
Kiawah Island, S. Carolina, USA
With the course perched on a bluff high above
the roaring Pacific Ocean, Mother Nature is
the biggest challenge and the greatest threat to
golfers here.
It was the venue of the 1991 Ryder Cup,
where the fight went down the wire with the
final putt deciding the winners. More unnerving
than that close battle is the conditions and
nature of the course.
The course is exposed to gusty or even
whipping ocean winds that stretch a typical
round to five-and-a-half or even six hours.
Besides, there are creatures waiting for you
to come searching for your windblown and
off-course ball. It could be an alligator, a
copperhead, rattlesnake or a water moccasin.
2. Merapi Golf Course,
Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Playing a round of golf at the foothills of Mount
Merapi is an adventure as much as a test of
your golfing skills. This public course on the
outskirts of the ancient city of Yogyakarta
offers stunning views on a clear day and almost
mystic feeling almost every day.
The Merapi Golf Club is nestled right at
the base of Mount Merapi, which is an active
volcano. Smoke can be seen billowing from the
top of the cone nearly 300 days a year and it
erupts fairly regularly.
The volcano last erupted in December
2010, sending waves of ash that blew over the
course and the surrounding area. It had golfers
scurrying for safety. Just keep an ear out for
the emergency warning alarms if you plan to
hazard a game there.
3. Lost City Golf Course, Sun City,
South Africa
Far deadlier animal encounters are possible at
the Lost City Golf Course in Sun City, South
Africa. Golfers have reported seeing elephants
and impalas, but the danger lies in a crocodile
pit near the 13th hole.
THE SWING
The question “What could be more
enjoyable than playing a round of golf at
an 18-hole desert-style golf course surrounded
by spectacular views across South Africa’s
wilderness?” was posted on the golf course’s
website. It further stated: “I’ll tell you what, not
getting eaten by Nile Crocodiles, that’s what.
The 13th hole is filled with them.
“You’ll want to take at least one extra club
to help defend yourself from the cold-blooded
hazards that await you around that green. But
hey, like your caddy or your mother, I can only
make suggestions.”
Apart from the spectators, the Lost City Golf
Course showcases the desert, the mountains, the
parklands and 28,000 square metres of water
features. This Gary Player-designed course
offers more than a relaxing round of golf in the
wild beauty of South Africa. It gives you a taste
of wild Africa.
4. Camp Bonifas, Panmunjom,
South Korea
US Army Camp Bonifas in Panmunjom, South
Korea, is home to one of the world’s most unique
golf courses. The ‘course’ consists of a single 192-
yard, a par-3 hole that sits 440 metres from the
Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) which separates the
South Korea from the North.
The green is made of artificial turf. The tee
box is 50 feet above the fairway and sits on top
of an empty machine gun nest.
Heavy barbed wire marks out of bounds on
the left, while a six-foot-deep military trench
runs along the right. It is lined by an 18-foot
security fence and unexploded mines that can
be triggered by errant shots.
It can never be mistaken for a country club,
as it was built for soldiers stationed at Camp
Bonifas, and it is a functional golf hole in their
own backyard.
5. Singapore Island Country
Club, Singapore
We periodically hear of animal attacks on golf
courses. There have been casualties reported
due to the crocodiles that lurk near the pond or
snakes slithering in the grass. Like Malaysia,
Singapore is also the home to more than
100 varieties of snakes, with several being
venomous, except that the situation there is
worsened by the diminishing natural habitat
for these creatures.
The Singapore Island Country Club is
located within the state’s Central Catchment
Nature Reserve, associating the golf course with
wild animal encounters, especially after the
infamous 1982 Singapore Open event where Jim
Stewart came face to face with a 10-foot cobra.
He killed it, only to watch in horror as another
snake emerged from its mouth.
While much has changed since 1982, the
incident refused to die and the club continues
be known for that notoriety. Now, golfers are
reminded of the serpent hazards and to be
mindful of wild boar encounters. The official
‘local’ rules of the course include a free lift
in areas damaged by digging from wild boar,
monkeys or other non-burrowing animals. These
are considered GUR or ‘ground under repair’.
6. Carbrook Golf Club, Brisbane,
Australia
This course gives the phrase water hazard a
whole new meaning. The Carbrook Golf Club
in Brisbane proudly calls itself the home of the
bull sharks; and for a good reason too.
Shark sightings on the Great Barrier
Reef are common, but spotting them in a
lake at the golf course? Golfers have reported
frequent sightings of these marine predators
some 15km inland from the 15th fairway at
Carbrook Golf Club.
The sharks got onto the golf course in
Queensland following a flood in the early 90s after
a river broke its banks. The predators became
stranded when the water receded, but now they
are thriving and even breeding.
7. World Ice Golf Championship,
Uummannaq, Greenland
The trying conditions of golfing in
temperatures well below freezing are a
challenge even some extreme golfers can’t
refuse.
Since 1999, Uummannaq, Greenland
has hosted the Drambuie World Ice Golf
Championship in late March and early April.
Located 600 km north of the Arctic Circle
in Greenland, Uummannaq’s tournament
involves a two-day, 36-hole tournament
between 36 players.
The nine holes are sculpted over the frozen
sea into which seven glaciers have released
enormous icebergs. As such, this Greenland
golf course changes annually, depending on the
moods of nature and the shape of ice.
With ice as the ‘greens’, red balls are used.
Players are allowed to scrape the surface to
smoothen the putting line. While enjoying a
game of golf, players would have to keep an eye
out for polar bears as it is their territory.
8. Prison View Golf Course,
Angola, Louisiana, USA
This golfing venue gives a new meaning to the
phrase ‘shank the ball’. The nine-hole Prison
View Golf Course is situated within the Louisiana
State Penitentiary compound, which is the largest
maximum-security prison in the United States.
The golf course has been open to the public
since 2004. Security here is tighter than any
other golf club manned by security guards. The
tee markers are in the shape of white handcuffs,
welded shut, and there are watch towers with
armed guards overlooking the course.
Tee times are booked 48 hours ahead to
enable background checks. Players must also
agree to the possibility of a body search and a
thorough inspection of their cars.
Since the course is on the grounds of the
penitentiary, security measures are enforced.
Golfers are unable to have a six-pack to go with
their rounds. Nor can there be weapons of any
sort on the players, except your golf clubs.
Understandably, play can be suspended in
the event of a riot or an attempted jailbreak.
And that is the real danger of playing at the
Prison View Golf Course.
9. Skukuza Golf Course, Kruger
National Park, South Africa
This is a safari and a round of golf rolled into
one. It is next up to the Kruger National Park,
which is one of the largest game reserves
in Africa. With no fences, lions, elephants,
leopards, warthogs, buffalo and more wander
onto the course regularly.
This is not a sale pitch by the club. It urges
players to read the information sheet and forces
them to sign the indemnity form before teeing off.
Players are also advised what to do when they
come across these animals. Players are to stay clear
of the water as it has hippopotamus that are big, fast,
lethal and not scared of a golfer of any handicap.
10. Cape Kidnapper’s Golf Course,
Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand
This is not a course for those who are scared of
heights. Its 180-degree view of the Pacific Ocean
and the miles of coastline may be breathtaking,
but throw caution to the wind at your own peril.
Six of the holes wind their way along the
edge of an 183-metre drop into the sea. The
15th hole is known as the ‘Pirate’s Plank’.
There are no safety barriers. Walking backward
to line up your putt can be your last mistake in
your round of golf here — a fatal one.
Wild
While we aren’t relinquishing our love for
decadent dress watches anytime soon, there’s
no denying that these tough-as-nails timepieces
have a Spartan-like appeal that’s bound to thrill
the most extreme of adventurers.
Bell and Ross: BR03-92 Black Camo
Camouflage: A symbolic element of stealth
and physical dexterity traditionally associated
with military personnel (and their inherently
intimidating attire). Watchmaker Bell and
Ross is no stranger to creative collaboration
with the military, having worked with the
Special Operations Unit of the French National
Gendarmerie and the French National Police
Force. Bell and Ross’s 2007 Phantom collection
and 2009 Commando collection were the first
timepieces in the brand to use a camouflage
coating- and the new BR03-92 Black Camo is a
stunning new arrival to these exciting collections.
Cased in matte black ceramic, this selfwinding
mechanical watch was built as tough as
it looks: housing a Swiss BR-CAL.302 calibre, it’s
water-resistant, scratch-resistant, and absorbs
very little heat, making it an ideal choice for
treks and bike rides in hot weather. So how
does this masterpiece pull off legibility and
camouflage in the same breath?
The dial is made up of two superposed inserts
sandwiched together, the lower one bears the
numerals and indices and is painted with a black
camouflage coating. The straps are made of black
rubber and highly-resilient black synthetic
fabric to hold its own against the beating of
Energy On-The-Go
Fuel up with nourishing food for those adrenaline
packed outdoor adventures.
Words by
shereen khoo
Getaways to explore new places are a
good way to break the monotony of your
work life and to keep in touch with the
person you actually are. Some people look
forward to leisure getaways where they
can experience the historical, cultural and
religious significance of different countries
through sight-seeing tours while others
have an appetite for adrenaline-packed
outdoor adventure experiences. Whether it
is a leisure vacation or an adventure travel,
supplying the body with adequate and
appropriate fuel is very important because
making better dietary choices will have a
positive impact on your holiday time.
Pre-adventure Meal - Kick-start
the Day with the Right Fuel
Chances are, your adventure will start
early in the morning to make the most
out of the day. It is very tempting to stock
up our body’s energy reserves with sweet
and fattening drinks or food. After all, we
reasoned that we are going to burn it once
we hit the road. So, what better time to
indulge in our favourite butter cookies,
doughnut, cakes or pastries than now?
However, it is often too late to regret
when we are hit by the adverse effects of
reactive hypoglycaemia, characterized by
a rapid drop in blood sugar level with an
accompanying feeling of fatigue, which
typically occurs after a sugar-laden meal.
Candies, sodas and even fruit juices are all
high in sugar and should be avoided.
A well-balanced breakfast meal which
includes a mixture of lean protein and
high-fiber foods such as whole grains,
fruits and vegetables provides an excellent
source of fuel to kick-start your day with
sustained-hours of energy.
Examples:
Wholemeal tuna or grilled chicken
sandwich with avocado, lettuce and
tomatoes. Spinach omelette with
wholemeal toast.
Fuel Up During the Adventure
Access to food at regular intervals might
be a challenge for certain travel activities,
such as going out of the city for an island
visit or having to complete a certain
distance of hike to reach the peak in
time for a glorious view. To sustain your
energy levels, pack healthy snacks in the
91
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017 | TM
HEALTH
car, bus or your backpack. Good choices
of mess-free snacks are almonds, trail
mix, granola bars or raw vegetables with
hummus. If perishable food (e.g. sandwiches)
is preferred, make sure you have a cold
source such as an ice pack to keep foods
properly chilled to prevent food poisoning
which will make your journey memorable in
the wrong way!
Always remember to rehydrate
throughout the day. Drinking water
helps with the regulation of your body
temperature, especially during hot weather.
If you are travelling to cold countries, make
it a point to drink water even when you
are not thirsty. Drinking plenty of water
will flush out toxins from your body, keep
your skin fresh and help prevent unhealthy
cravings that one would normally experience
on the road.
Post-adventure Meal - Replenish
Your Body with the Right Nutrients
A good meal to replenish your body
nutrients should be one that is rich in
carbohydrate and lean protein. Give yourself
a pat on the back. After an eventful day, you
can allow yourself to indulge a little to fulfil
the sweet tooth craving that you have as the
body can afford to take in high glycaemic
index food to replenish your glycogen
(energy) stores. If you have engaged in
strenuous or adventurous activities and have
been sweating profusely, it is necessary to
include a source of fluid and electrolytes to
rehydrate effectively. Sports drinks, which
typically include the electrolytes sodium
and potassium can do the trick. Otherwise,
natural foods such as cantaloupe, honeydew,
bananas, spinach, tomato juice, carrot juice,
sweet potatoes or low-fat milk are also good
sources of potassium.
Being in a foreign country with
unfamiliar surroundings sometimes limit
your access to healthy food and the ability
to obtain a balanced diet. It is a good idea to
pack your multivitamins to supplement your
diet during this time.
Stay Hydrated Up in the Air
Are you flying to your holiday destination?
Aircraft cabins are generally very dry and
dehydration can occur easily. To combat
dehydration, drink lots of water but do it
slowly and regularly because drinking
too much water suddenly will cause you
the inconvenience of having to visit the
lavatory frequently. Always bear in mind
that coffee and alcohol have a diuretic
effect, which will cause the body to
produce an increased amount of urine. Try
to keep coffee and alcohol consumption to
a minimum level.
You Can Have Fun and Stay Healthy
at the Same Time
When it comes to a holiday, most people
are excited to plan their vacation and
pack their bags, but very few give much
thought to how to stay healthy throughout
the holiday. The right choice of food
and plenty of fluid help to sustain your
energy levels, fuel your muscles, boost
your immune system and help you recover
quickly.
A well-balanced breakfast meal which
includes a mixture of lean protein and highfiber
foods such as whole grains, fruits and
vegetables provides an excellent source of
fuel to kick-start your day with sustainedhours
of energy
Staying True To
PERU
Chef Gastón’s life and achievements are a fearless display of how a
home can be a source of culinary pride and how a passion project can
revolutionise a country’s fine dining scene.
Words by Tania Jayatilaka
Good things should be shared;
if anyone believes in this
adage enough to make it a life
philosophy, it’s Chef Gastón
Acurio. A venerated name in
the Peruvian dining industry,
he is one half of the husband-wife duo
behind Astrid y Gastón, a fine-dining Lima
restaurant with a rich history, strategically
located in the pastoral San Isidro estate. It’s
no coincidence that this area houses a 17th
century plantation house that’s rife with its
own historical richness ever in silent praise
of Peruvian pride and culture.
Casa Moreyra and French Cooking
The former colonial plantation house,
Casa Moreyra, was declared a historical
monument in 1972. More recently, it’s the
spot to which the Astrid y Gastón restaurant
relocated in 2014. It was around the same
time that Chef Gastón returned from
retirement to take the helm of operations
again, after leaving an impressive trail of
more than 40 Peruvian restaurants across
the globe.
Together with his German wife, Chef
Astrid Gutsche, he initially set up Astrid y
Gastón in 1994 in Lima’s Miraflores district,
Chef Gastón
the first of many bold moves following his
decision to become a chef despite his family’s
wishes for him to enter the legal profession.
Having worked in Paris at Michelin-star
restaurants such as the Tour d’ Argent,
Chefs Gastón and Astrid returned to Peru
from Europe, with the intent on continuing
the tradition of French fine dining at Astrid
y Gastón.
It was after a year that Chef Gastón
began to question the decision to serve
traditional French cuisine in a country
whose gastronomic heritage was in itself so
spectaculars even if the people didn’t realise it.
From France to Peru
In a 2014 interview with the Telegraph,
Chef Gastón explained the dilemma he
faced some 20 years ago when deciding to
switch from French cuisine to Peruvian―
Peruvian cooking was generally considered
less refined compared to French cooking,
something best left to the confines of the
home rather than an upscale eatery.
Taking a risk, Chef Gastón and Chef
Astrid began experimenting with more
Peruvian ingredients in their menus. This
boldness and sheer determination to bring
the Peruvian cuisine to haute culinary
standards were rewarded as the restaurant
bagged a spot in San Pellegrino’s World’s
Best 50 restaurants in 2012 and 2013.
Sharing is Caring
Chef Gastón’s contribution to his
profession seemed to extend beyond it; he
was honoured with the ‘Prince Claus of
Holland’ international award in 2009 for
his contribution to the Peruvian culture
and development. He was also hailed by the
Madrid Fusión panel for defending Peru’s
biodiversity. Chef Gastón was the driving
force behind Mistura, a massive food festival
in Lima that till today celebrates Peruvian
cuisine with explosive enthusiasm from
participants. On the philanthropic front, he
supports the Pachacutec School of Cuisine,
a culinary institute where the industry’s
leading professionals teach underprivileged
students from the poorest parts of Lima.
Taking yet another risk, Chef Gastón’s
decision to move Astrid y Gastón to the
peaceful Casa Moreyra was hinged on a
desire for more Peruvians to eat there - a
desire which he knew would translate to a
Chef Gastóon began
to question the
decision to serve
traditional French
cuisine in a country
whose gastronomic
heritage was
in itself so
spectacular- even if
the people didn’t yet
realise it.
loss of money, but he had said that his other
restaurants can make up the difference.
Dinnertime at Casa Moreyra
So, what is this unique experience that he’s
created at the fair grounds of San Isidro’s
Casa Moreyra? Astrid y Gastón’s interior is
grand but with a strangely simple ambience
to it, hosting a lavish bar, stunning private
salons for small group events, three kitchens,
a patio and a wonderfully kept herb garden
which frequently furnishes the kitchen’s
pantry. In fact, every ingredient featured in
the menu at Astrid y Gastón has been grown
or sourced from the wider Lima area.
The 2017 winter menu pays tribute to the
history and culture of Lima, making use of
the bountiful fish, potatoes, yellow chillies,
corn and other produce grown locally. The
summer menu doesn’t ignore the influence
of other cultures on Peruvian cuisine - little
surprises like the Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian
fusion) stewed beef with vegetables and
miso soup can be spotted alongside classics
like scallops from Peru’s west coast town of
Paracas, served with chestnuts and lucuma
Before Chef Gastón’s return, the restaurant
was under the capable hands of head chef
Diego Muñoz who helped it rise to fame on
Diego left Astrid y Gastón just last year
and has since opened a Latin American
some of the top chefs in Peru. Virgilio
Astrid y Gastón, later opened a Michelin
If you’re an all-round chilli lover, do your taste buds a
is known as an incredibly simple yet wildly popular
Korean dish - fermented Napa cabbage that’s been
marinated with salt, garlic, ginger and of course, red
pepper powder and chilli powder to give it that fiery-red
appearance. Balancing the kimchi’s pungent flavour is
the lightness of the tofu slices and the crunchiness of
the lettuce.
Whiskey
Business
Jet-setting cocktail connoisseur on the hunt for a solid dram, or fan of single malt, there’s no shortage
of Stateside whiskey bars to slake your thirst.
WORDS by Avinash Sagran
There are few spirits around that get the blood pumping
as much as whiskey. The spirit choice of the bold, there’s no messing
around once you crack open a bottle. Purists often appreciate the
different scents that are present in single malt whiskey while
newcomers are intrigued by its taste and appearance. Whatever the
case, single malt, bourbon, rye or scotch, we’re immediately drawn to
the brown stuff they call the water of life.
One of the US’s beloved spirits, over the past year, worldwide sales
of American-made whiskey have been racking up. Cultural trends
have also played a role in whiskey’s rising popularity and stirred up
a renewed appreciation for the ever-present spirit, with hit US TVseries
“Mad Men” reigniting the cool in whiskey.
As alcohol consumers crave for new flavours, brands have begun
responding by launching innovative offerings. Creating hybrids by
combining flavours from distilleries across the world is what people
have come to expect and is no longer the exception.
Roger Federer has been celebrating winning an unprecedented
eighth Wimbledon title. The Swiss tennis champ beat Marin
Cilic in straight sets to get his hands on the prestigious golden
trophy and make sporting history. Watching from Player’s Box
was Roger’s wife Mirka and the couple’s fourchildren - Charlene, Myla,
Lenny and Leo.
Also present were the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who were
watching from the Royal Box on Centre Court. Kate was wearing a floral
Catherine Walker midi dress. Among the famous faces watching the game
were Hollywood stars Uma Thurman, Eddie Redmayne, Sienna Miller and
Andrew Garfield.. Speaking after his win, Roger – who took six months off
after losing in the Wimbledon semi-finals last year – said: “I put in a lot of
work and it paid off.” He also spoke about the support he has from his wife
and family, his ambitions for the future and what he thinks has made him
one of the most successful tennis players ever...
GAME CHANGER
CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING YOUR EIGHTH
WIMBLEDON TITLE. WHEN YOU FIRST BEAT YOUR
IDOL PETE SAMPRAS IN 2001 DID YOU EVER IMAGINE
GETTING to THIS FAR??
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah no, I didn’t think I was going to be
this successful after beating Pete [Sampras]here. I hoped to
have a chance maybe one day to be in a Wimbledon Finals
and have a chance to win the tournament so winning eight
is not something you can ever aim for in my opinion and
if you do, I don’t know, you must have so much talent and
parents and coaches who push you from the age of three
on, who think that you are like a project. I was not that kid.
I was just a normal guy growing up in Basel and hoping to
make a career on the tennis tour. And I guess I dreamed, I
believed and really hoped that maybe I could actually do it,
to make it real. So I put in a lot of work and it paid off.
AFTER LEAVING THE TOURNAMENT IN THE SEMI-
FINALS LAST YEAR AND TAKING SOME TIME OFF, DID
YOU BELIEVE YOU WOULD BE BACK AND COULD WIN IT?
ROGER FEDERER: I mean, honestly, it was all based on
health. It wasn’t about the game itself or how I should play
when I came back to Wimbledon this year. It was all about
ensuring I am in a good physical condition so that I could
compete with the best and play
seven times, five sets, that was
my goal and I achieved that.
So when I showed up here in
Wimbledon, I was actually
already very happy.
DO YOU INTEND TO COME
BACK NEXT YEAR OR NEXT
YEAR OR WILL YOU GET TO
THE END OF THIS YEAR AND
DECIDE WHETHER TO DO
ANOTHER WHOLE YEAR ON
THE TOUR?
ROGER FEDERER: I mean, honestly, ever since I had the
year I had last year, I do think probably a year ahead of
time, with my schedule, fitness schedule and tournaments
I would like to play. So I totally see myself playing here this
time next year but because it is far away and because of what
happened last year, I just like to take the opportunity
to thank the people in the very moment and just make them
understand that yes, I hope that I am back but there is never
a guarantee, especially not at 35/36. But the goal is definitely
to be here again next year to try and defend.
YOU OFTEN HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT NOT WORRYING
ABOUT RECORDS, THAT’S NOT WHAT MOTIVATES YOU…
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I didn’t quite say that, like I don’t
care! [laughs] I said it was a great extra motivator. It was.
IS THERE SOMETHING PARTICULARLY SPECIAL ABOUT
GETTING TO EIGHT WINS AT WIMBLEDON, WHERE IT
WAS YOUR FIRST, AND NO ONE HAS EVER ACHIEVED
I just realized that I don’t
think I have a crazy secret,
and that’s what makes it
crazy, right? – I guess I am very
generous with my friends. My
kids say to me all the time to
bring it down
THAT FOR THE MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP?
ROGER FEDERER: Yes, it is very special. Wimbledon was
always my favourite tournament and will always be my
favourite tournament. My heroes walked the grounds here
and walked the courts here and because of them, I think
I became a better player too. So to mark history here at
Wimbledon really means a lot to me, just because of all of
that really. It’s that simple. So funny enough, I didn’t think
of it that much throughout the day or throughout the
trophy ceremony, I was more just so happy that I was able to
win because it’s been a long road, it’s been an exciting road.
It’s been tough it’s been tough at times but that’s how it’s
supposed to be. So to be Wimbledon champion for an entire
year now is something I can’t wait to savour and just enjoy.
So it was super special and number eight obviously means
a lot to me because at that level to be part of Wimbledon
history is truly amazing.
WILL YOU NOW REASSESS YOUR GOALS IN A
DIFFERENT WAY?
ROGER FEDERER: Not really. I was always going to play
more in the second part of the season. I wasn’t going to skip
entire swings, you know, I wasn’t going to skip Asia or the
American tour or the European indoors. I was always going
to play as much as I possibly could. So I
think I’m going to stay true to that and
now we have to sit down and decide
what we’re going to do with Canada
or not but most likely I’ll definitely
play Cincinnati and the US Open and
Shanghai and then go back to the
indoors. So, that’s the plan for now.
DID YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU WOULD
GET ANOTHER GRAND SLAM TITLE?
ROGER FEDERER: I truly believed,
you know, and for me it was also
important that my team believed it
as well. So it wasn’t just like me trying to carry the team, I
need the team to carry me most of the time because that’s
the few percent that the team makes a difference. Maybe
when you’re doubting yourself, they reassure you, if you’re
feeling too good, they make sure you come back to planet
Earth and put you in your place. So that’s where I think
I have a wonderful team and I did ask them the question
sincerely to everybody on my team if they thought I could
win majors again or if I could win the biggest tournaments
or if I could win against the best on a regular basis.
Basically, the answer was always the same from them, that
they thought if you’re 100 per cent healthy and you’re wellprepared
and you’re eager to play then anything’s possible.
But if those components are not working then it’s going to
be extremely difficult. And that’s how it also played out
so that we’re all right and I believed them and I had the
same feeling so that’s why I think the break last year was
really necessary to reassess and just get back to 100 per cent
physically.
gAME CHANGER
WHY DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE HAD SO MUCH
SUCCESS IN YOUR CAREER, WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL
AND MENTAL ABILITIES THAT HELPED YOU TO
ACHIEVE THESE GREAT RECORDS?
ROGER FEDERER: I think at this stage it is really
consistency, not shying away from the big stage, I’ve always
been a big stage player, I’ve always felt like I’ve played my best
on the biggest courts. I struggled on Court 18, to be honest,
because of whatever reason it was, I just didn’t feel I hit the
ball as good there as on Centre Court. So that was always going
to be a good thing if I played the best players in the bigger
matches that that would serve me well. I felt like I dreamed
pretty big as a kid, I felt maybe things were possible that
maybe others thought were never going to be achievable. That
helped me. And I just think I trained really hard and really
well and very clever over the years. If I go back to my first
coach, to my coaches today, and the same thing with fitness
all the way to today, I think every step of the way I had the
right people. I have amazing people around me. My wife, my
parents, who have always kept me very grounded and kept me
the person that I am still today. And then the game, I guess,
yes, I was blessed with a lot of talent but also I had to work for
it. Talent only gets you that far really.
YOU ALWAYS HAVE VERY HIGH STANDARDS AND YOU
SAID AT 15 YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY THE PREFECT
MATCH, WHICH IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE…
ROGER FEDERER: Not at 15 anyway! And also not at 35.
BUT JUST TALK ABOUT WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
THIS YEAR AND THIS TOURNAMENT, WHERE
YOU DIDN’T LOSE A SET. THERE’S A LEVEL OF
EXCELLENCE THAT’S JUST INCREDIBLE?
ROGER FEDERER: Honestly, I’m incredibly surprised and
how well I’m feeling as well and how things are turning out
to be on the courts, how I’m managing tougher situations
where my level of play is on a daily basis. I am surprised that
it’s this good. I knew I could do great again maybe one day
but not at this level. And I guess you would have laughed
too if I told you I was going to win two Slams this year.
People wouldn’t believe me if I said that. And I also didn’t
believe that I was going to win two this year but, yeah, it’s
incredible. I don’t know how much longer it’s going to last.
I have no idea but I’ve just got to always remind myself that
health comes first at this point and if I do that then maybe
things are actually possible I didn’t think were.
gAME CHANGER
YOU TURN 36 SOON…
ROGER FEDERER: Thanks for the reminder again!
[laughs] It’s all good. No problem.
AS YOU SAID, HEALTH PERMITTING, IS IT
POSSIBLE THAT YOU COULD STILL BE PLAYING AT
WIMBLEDON WHEN YOU’RE 40?
ROGER FEDERER: I mean you would think so! If health
permitting and, like you say, everything’s OK and you
could take 300 days off beforehand and just prepare for
Wimbledon and put yourself in a freeze box and then
you come out and you train a bit and you know you’re
not going to be injured. Yeah, playing Wimbledon and
winning Wimbledon are two separate
things as well and don’t forget that so...
And the problem by not playing is you
take a chance on your health too in
some ways because matches actually
are the real measuring stick. You can
practise as good as you want, you can
feel as good as you want in practise. But
when the pressure comes during the
matches and the nerves of the stomach
and how you feel it, everything that
happens like before the match, you
can’t recreate that in a practise and you
don’t know how your body is going
to react to that kind of pressure when
you’re moving and you’re not free and
you’re tense. That’s why you always
need to have the right balance between
practise and matches and vacation. So at some stage you
have to play a minimum of matches otherwise you’re
just not going to be successful anymore and that’s going
to be the interesting thing moving forward, how I’m
going to be able to manage that.
WAS THIS WIMBLEDON FINAL A SLIGHTLY
STRANGE ATMOSPHERE BECAUSE OF THE
STRUGGLES ON MARIN’S PART? AND DID YOU
CHANGE YOUR PLAY OR MENTALITY BECAUSE OF
WHAT WAS HAPPENING ON HIS SIDE OF THE NET?
ROGER FEDERER: I couldn’t tell you right now and I
didn’t know what his problem was really, to be honest,
so I couldn’t tell you if he was struggling moving to his
forehand or to his backhand. Because he was serving big
and he was serve and volleying, so I guess movement for
that reason wasn’t the biggest problem. I thought when
he called the doctor first I thought maybe he was dizzy
or something. So because I couldn’t tell what it was, it
I just realised that
I don’t think I have a
crazy secret, and that’s
what makes it crazy,
right? – I guess I am
very generous with my
friends. My kids say to
me all the time to bring
it down
actually made things easier. If I saw him limping around
or if I saw him pull up hurt in some place, I would have
started to think, OK maybe I’ll throw in a drop shot to
really check him out [laughs]. Because that’s what you do.
You need to hurt him where it hurts already. So because
I didn’t know and I couldn’t tell I just said, well, I’ll focus
on your game and focus on your match and keep playing,
The good thing is I was already in the lead. But yes, the
atmosphere of course is not a five-set thriller so people
want to see a tighter match, I totally get it, but I’ve had
those so I’m happy it was different today. [laughs]
FINALLY, WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING AND WHAT
WOULD BE YOUR ADVICE TO ANDY
MURRAY IN RESTING A BIT MORE?
ROGER FEDERER: Well look, he’s
younger and he has a different practise
regime than I have, I’m sure. It doesn’t
mean he’s practising more or less,
it’s just different, he’s had a different
upbringing, everything’s different.
And it doesn’t mean because I took a
break that everybody should take that
break. To be quite honest, some players
just need to play and they need to play
every other day, otherwise they feel like
they completely lose touch with the
racket and the ball and the body goes
all funny on them. So I think it’s only
himself with his team who knows best.
I can’t give any advice in this regard.
But, for me, the break really worked wonders. I’m still
surprised it did as much as it did and I had to take some
tough decisions along the way, like pulling out of the
French and pulling out of the clay court season. Now,
in hindsight, it looks so simple. You just do that to win
Wimbledon. But it’s not. I’m sure he’s going to take the
right decisions moving forward and he’s still got a lot of
years left to play if he’s in the mood for and we’ll see a
great Andy Murray moving forward.
AND WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING?
ROGER FEDERER: I don’t know. I love to play. I have
a wonderful team. My wife is totally fine with me still
playing, she’s my No 1 supporter, she’s amazing. Yeah,
I love playing the big stages still and I don’t mind the
practise, I don’t mind the travel and because I’m playing
a little less actually I get more time in return. I feel like
I’m working part-time these days almost, sometimes,
which is a great feeling [laughs].
speed
and other things
One man, and his vision of a motorsports event that accommodated all.
Words by
Aswan Yap
117 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017 | TM
THE DRIVE
OF
all the motorsport events that occur
annually, perhaps the most all-encompassing
and arguably the must go show for any
petrolheadwould be the Goodwood Festival
of Speed. It is just one of the many events that
Goodwood hosts or organizes, but it is the one
that has the largest draw and is the most involving.
Spanning four days and drawing massive crowds, it’s a
spectacle and not merely for the cars alone.
For those who are not in the know, the Goodwood
Festival of Speed is centred on a single twisty strip of
tarmac, roughly 1.9 kilometres in length. The road
just happens to run through the Goodwood estate
that features a number of challenging corners and
elevation changes to make it as exciting as any sprint
or hill-climb course. The Goodwood name has had a
long history with motorsports, but it was in the early
1990s when Lord March, heir apparent to the Goodwood
estate and at the time, decided it was time for a return.
Unfortunately, he did not have the necessary
permits and access to hold a race or festival on the
actual Goodwood Circuit, so he chose instead to hold it
on the Goodwood grounds itself. In 1993, the Goodwood
estate opened its doors to over 25,000 people who came
to watch cars rocket up and down the track, which was
essentially a driveway. The event evolved with each
passing year, expanding first to become a weekend
affair, and eventually becoming the four-day event you
see today.
Just 10 years in, the show hit its peak attendance
of over 158,000 people and it was decided from then
that attendees are required to purchase their tickets
in advance. Despite this, there has been no drop in
attendance, with the tickets regularly being sold out for
each day.
But what is it that makes the Goodwood Festival of
Speed so special? In one way, it provides people with a sense
of belonging, similar to what one would find at a music
festival or a Broadway musical. It’s the spectacle of the
main event, the sound and fury, and the proximity to the
action that keeps people excited. Unlike contemporary
motorsport events where there’s a large crash barrier and
THE DRIVE
catch fence separating you from the action, the only thing
between attendees and the cars at the Goodwood Festival
of Speed are a number of straw bales.
Despite the rather exclusive sounding name, the
Goodwood Festival of Speed has always maintained a
more progressive view and become all-encompassing.
The common denominator between the participants
is ‘speed’, as the name implies, and the hosts aren’t
particular about whether that speed comes from the
West or the East, whether it’s traditional or modern.
In the last few years, drifting has found a permanent
spot on the event schedule, along with time attack cars
and of course, it’s always interesting to see how top-tier
backyard builders fare against professional race teams
with factory backing.
This is in stark contrast to the more traditional
motorsport events that are a little stuck in their
ways, elitist and uninvolving at times. Perhaps a
large testament to this is the centrepiece of the show,
which changes each year to celebrate a particular
manufacturer’s achievement or anniversary. This year’s
show saw a tribute to Bernie Ecclestone, especially after
leaving his post at the helm of Formula 1.
the goodwood festival of spedd
traditional motorsport events
that are a little stuck in their ways,
elitist and uninvolving at times.
Complementing the hill climb event is a rally stage
and the moving motor show, both of which appeal to
a slightly different crowd. The rally is especially big
in the United Kingdom, and while it isn’t as highly
contested as the hill climb event, it still draws a pretty
serious crowd that comes to support their favourite
teams or to simply see how the up-and-coming teams
are faring. The moving motor show is more for those
who appreciate cars on a superficial level, that is,
without delving too deep into the technical details or
THE DRIVE
It pays to remember that none of
this could have happened if one
man hadn’t decided to forge his
own path, hadn’t been so bold as
to hold a full motorsports event
on his own driveway.
developing an appreciation for the obscure. With a
parade of supercars running up and down the track, it’s
easy for anyone to appreciate.
Despite the apparent lack of safety, the Goodwood
Festival of Speed has seen only two incidents in
the course of over two decades in operation. This is
also partly because the focus of the event is more on
demonstration and a celebration of motorsports than
it is about all-out driving and claiming the top spot.
While the fastest cars and drivers at the event do go
down in history, they are only a small portion of what
happens on the whole.
It pays to remember that none of this could have
happened if one man hadn’t decided to forge his own
path, hadn’t been so bold as to hold a full motorsports
event on his own driveway. With continuous support
from both fans and manufacturers, the event has grown
in size and complexity becoming a proper world-class
event and a destination for many every year. While it
may not be on the Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit as
Lord March originally intended, it has far exceeded what
would have been possible in a traditional venue.
the
Big Five
Novice or veteran to the African plains, the call of the
wild is simply irresistible. Press your khakis, pack your
trunk and charge your camera. A well-planned safari
will leave you with impressions and memories, unlike
any other holiday destination.
THE VACATION
t
oday, a safari is synonymous with wildlife, adventure,
tents and romance. However, the word originates
from the Arabic verb ‘safar’ which means ‘to take a
journey’. The Swahili term safari that coins today’s
notion of luxurious private photo expeditions started
out as large-scale operations involving caravans with
huge contingents of staff and crew carrying supplies
and weapons along treacherous trade routes and vast
expanses of African landscapes. If skilful bartering
and negotiating played a crucial role then, careful planning is
instrumental to a memorable trip today.
Modern-day safaris are mainly on offer in five African
countries - Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana and South
Africa. These nations have managed to build a solid economy
based on ecologically responsible tourism despite the immense
number of visitors they cater for every year.
Each one of these nations lays claim to being the last, the
true Eden on Earth. While all five feature breathtakingly
beautiful vistas, most destinations can more or less guarantee
regular viewings of the famous ‘Big Five’, namely elephants,
lions, buffaloes, rhinos and leopards.
A successful safari holiday will depend on many aspects,
such as time of year, group size, the standard of accommodation,
mode of transportation and whether one aims at a family
vacation or a romantic honeymoon getaway.
Kenya’s Maasai Mara Nature Reserve offers one of the
most astounding wildlife spectacles on earth when millions
of wildebeests traverse the plains of the Serengeti towards
the Mara ecosystem on their annual great migration. It also
rewards the intrepid visitor with exceptionally knowledgeable
private guides, personal butlers and uncompromisingly
luxurious accommodation in the remote parts of the parks.
Hemingways Ol Seki Mara (www.hemingways-collection.
com/mara) is a private camp featuring exclusive tents amidst
one of the largest lion populations in Africa, as well as elephants,
giraffes and the elusive wild dogs.
Mara Plains Camp (www.relaischateaux.com/us/kenya/
maraplains-nairobi), also inside Maasai Mara Nature Reserve,
offers vast tented suites. Securely tucked inside this extravagant
canvas accommodation, from the comfort of his brass bathtub the
lucky guest might well spot some feline predators strolling by.
Sitting on the banks of the Mara River, Sanctuary Olonana
provides unrivalled views of the great waterways as well as large
numbers of predators lying in wait to snatch up unsuspecting prey.
The Maasai Mara luxury camps take pride in tailoring
every detail to their guests’ liking, including day trips, food
preferences and amenities.
Tanzania, has such an abundance of wildlife to offer that
repeat ‘safarians’ complain that spotting the ‘Big Five’ is made all
too easy.
The Serengeti, famous starting point of the Great Migration
of wildebeest, zebra and topi, lends itself beautifully to a
morning game viewing adventure from above, in the serenity of
a hot air balloon.
The true connoisseur of luxury travel will find his
temporary home at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge, Serengeti.
Here, freestanding villas feature stunning views from the
private pool as well as a dedicated butler service.
