Our school HLC International was chosen by
Ashoka Foundation as a ChangeMaker because
we are truly inclusive. Ashoka Foundation
is based in the USA. It helps people in
the society. There are 20 Ashoka Change-
Maker schools in India and 120 schools
around the world. It is a recognition for our
school. HLC is the first Ashoka ChangeMaker
school in Chennai.
Recognised by the Ashoka Foundation
,USA , a school that builds empathy in
the student body and develops service offerings,
prove to be invaluable to the society.

AS SUDHA MAHESH AUNTY DECLARED
THE SPORTS DAY OPEN :THE KG CHIL-
DREN STARTED WITH THEIR DRILL.THEY
PERFORMED “THE RAINBOW FOR-
MATION''. MALATHI AUNTY BEGAN THE
COUNT AND THE KG STUDENTS FOL-
LOWED GOPICA AUNTY AND RENU
AUNTY. AFTER THE DRILL WAS OVER
THEY STARTED THEIR MAIN
EVENTS.PRE- KG WAS FOLLOWED BY
LKG AND UKG. SARTH SIR CLAPPED THE
CLAPPERS AND THEIR 25M RACE
STARTEDCLASS WISE. NEXT EVENT WAS
THE OBSTACLE RACE. THE STUDENTS
HAD TO HOP OVER THE HURDLES, SLIDE
THE HOOLA HOP OVER THEIR BODY AND
THEN RUN TOWARDS THE FINISHING
LINE.
ELINA DID A WONDERFUL JOB WITH
HELP OF STEPHEN SIR, SHARMILA
AUNTY AND THE FUNCTIONAL CURRIC-
ULUM TEACHERS.
THE SPORTS DAY CAME TO AN END. IT
WAS THE TIME FOR PRIZE DISTURBI-
TION . EACH CHILD GOT A MEDAL AND A
CERTIFICATE.

A wonderful beginning in KG

his year KG started with tons of activities
like Onam, Navarathiri, Father's day celebration,
Grandparent’s day celebration
etc.

Navarathiri
Everybody knows that Navarathiri is a wonderful festival
and all houses are filled with happiness .This
year the teachers and tiny tots have taken the responsibility
to spread the happiness in school too.
They sang lovely songs in their own cute way .The
whole event was a success only due to the teachers’
efforts.

Ethnic Day
-Nivedhitha Theyagarajan
We celebrate Independence day as Ethnic day
in our school. On Ethnic Day all of us wear
ethnic dresses. Grades 1 to 4 had to assemble
in the downstairs AV room and grades 5 to
9 had to assemble in the upstairs AV room.
This year we celebrated Ethnic Day a day before
Independence day[August 14 th ].
Grade 1 dressed up as leaders and sang a
Hindi song called ‘Nana Muna Rahi Hu’. Grade
2 sang a song called ‘Three colours’ and ‘My
name is Madhavi’. Grade 3 sang the song
‘Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram’ and spoke like
the freedom fighters. Grade 4 sang
‘Vandemataram’ and spoke some facts on Independence
Day. Grade 5 told unknown freedom
facts and sang the song called ‘Sare Jahanse
Accha’. Grade 6 did a skit on Abdul
Kalam and the girls sang a song and played
the Keyboard for the song ‘Vande Madharam’.
Grade 7 did a skit and sang a song. Grade 8
sang a song and did a skit. Grade 9 told some
facts and sang a song and finally Chris of
Grade 6 played the National Anthem in the
Guitar.

This time we celebrated the Ethnic
Day in the AV Room. Every year we
look forward to our Ethnic Day which
is truly awesome and wonderful!!!!!

Phenomena Learning
Classes 3 and 5 are doing phenomena learning. phenomena
learning is nothing but learning the subject concepts using
a natural phenomenon. Our phenomena learning took place
in the hlc farm. class 3 have English and math. Class 5 have
science and global Studies
Grade 5: g.s
they have done a few activities for the topic Voyages of
Discovery . Imagining as few explorers like Vascodagama,
marco polo, henry the navigator, Ferdinand Magellan,
Christopher Columbus and Bartholomew dias was an activity.
They also sowed seeds to show the Tropic of cancer and
tropic of Capricorn

Keerthika of grade 5 says, "the way deeptha
aunty thought of the activity was really creative
and I really liked all the activities we have
done until now.”
Grade 5: science
Grade 5 has linked the subject science which the
farm.they have linked a few activities for the topic
force, micro organisms and electricity. one of the activity
grade 5 had done is to write about the forces you see
in the farm.

sually during assembly, we chant slokas as
prayers and close our eyes for 2 minutes. Interestingly,
this year we do different activities
after chanting . Each week is allocated to a class. They
choose a theme for that week. Example: Grade 2's theme
was language and they did everything related to language.
All of us have done very well so far.
On Mondays, we take our pledge - “India is my country...”.
On Tuesdays, we tell the current affairs of the
week. On Wednesdays, it is 'Listening Assembly' where
a few students from the class play a song or sing a song
or say something that others have to listen to, like Quizzes
and Questions. On Thursdays, it is 'Just a Minute'
where a student talks about a chosen topic for a minute.
On Fridays, a dance or song related to the theme they
had chosen will be presented.
Grade 1 had the theme “Magic Words”. They talked about
“Please, Sorry and Thank You” for the 'Just a Minute'
programme. They also sang a song about the three words.
It was fabulous!

rade 2's theme was “Language”. They had
Quizzes on Languages for all classes. They also
presented the word “Inclusion” in sign language.
They also had proverbs in the three languages,
English, Hindi and Tamil. They had English
words which had root words in Sanskrit and Tamil. They
also sang a beautiful song on Languages. Very interesting!
Grade 3's theme was “Responsibility”. They recited a short
story with lots of 'responsibilities' stuffed inside it! They
also sang a song on Responsibility.
Grade 4's was “Gratitude”, they had sung a song on Gratitude.
They invited drivers and attenders and presented
them with little mementoes to show their gratitude to them.
They also thanked them for cleaning the restrooms, bringing
us safely to school and back home too. Thank You drivers
and attenders :)
Grade 5's theme was “Acceptance and Appreciation”. They
sang a song called “You have made a difference”.
Elina had also done very well. They did it before the Independence
Day. They played the National Anthem sung by
Rabindranath Tagore himself. They recited the pledge very
clearly. Inspiring!!

FIELD TRIPS OF HLC

FIELD TRIPS are always a fun filled and an exciting
activity for school children. Grades 1-7 of
HLC went to many places this term. Most of
the children liked their Field Trips . There were
many interesting places visited by the school
children. The list below gives the information
about the field trips of different grades.
Grade 1-
Place visited: Vandalur Zoo
This was their first field trip in the school.
They felt it was the best day spent with their
friends and also felt excited when they saw the
animals and birds.
“We had lots of fun and it was awesome”

Grade 2-
Place visited: Birla Planetarium
They enjoyed it a lot and they learnt about moons, stars,
planets and space rockets. It was the coolest field trip for
them. They liked seeing the moons and stars using the glasses.
“It was awesome and it was the coolest field trip ever!”
Grade 3-
Place visited: Birla Planetarium
They liked it a lot and they want to go again and again
because it was awesome. They learnt about the moons, stars,
planets and space rockets they got inspired by that.
“It was the best and the coolest!”
Grade 4-
Place visited: Theosophical Society
Most of them loved it and told it was interesting and
also fun .
“It was so fun and also interesting”
Grade 5-
Place visited: Shell Museum and Butterball
Everyone loved the field trip and also interesting. They
learnt a lot about shells, fishes and the butterball. Everyone
was playing around butterball in the park. This was the first
visit for all of them.
“It was awesome, Never can hate it, The coolest”

Grade 6 and 9-
Place visited: Movie Festival –Ability Fest
Many of them loved the festival a lot and they also
watched a movie. Some of them didn’t enjoy the festival but
they liked watching the movie.

Grade 7-
Place visited: BMW Show room
Everyone loved it because it is one of the best cars in
the world. They loved looking at different car models and
they looked so stylish. It was more interesting and informative
because they explained the children how the cars are
manufactured.
The Seven I’s!!
Wondering what the Seven I’s are??
Well, they are some of the valuable qualities which are essential for the
holistic development of a
student.
The Seven I’s are: Integrity, Identity, Initiative, Imagination, Intuition,
Interaction and Inquiry. Our school
believes life skills are as important as academic skills.
The Seven I’s workshop is conducted for the Grades 6 – 8. This workshop
helps in developing intrapersonal
skills using various art forms. Our teachers along with
Snehadara Foundation conduct this
workshop. Five sessions of exciting and creative activities. The students
look forward to the Seven I
Sessions.

cooking class
In our school, cooking class is something that we really look forward to. It is
for all grades. It is fun and very helpful . The food that the students in our
school make is hygienic. Here are some tidbits about it:
class 1: 2 types of laddoos and delicious lemonade.
Yummy and kealthy!
Class 2:Heart melting banana milkshake and healthy channa chaat.
Makes you “chat” about it
Class 3: Traditional food in plantain leaves.
Awesome!
Class4: Quick bites with paneer.
Tasty bites
Class 5: Tomato soup, Aloo paratha, Raitha,
Chocolate cupcake and a juicy Lemonade.

Class 6: Pani Puri, Paneer Paratha, Orange and Lemon Mocktail
and Chocolate Brownie
Class 7: Spring Roll, Tacos and Brownies with Icecream
Class 8: Achari Paneer Tikka, Garlic Bread, Quesidilla, Frankie, Mint Lemonade,
Dahi Puri, Chocolate Cake, Nachos and Chocolate Milkshake

Class 9: Cutlet, Corn Fritters, Ginger Lemonade, Chimmichanga,
Paneer Fry, Brazilian Truffle and Brownies
with Ice-cream
Class 10: Aloo chaat ,Chilli parotta , Bread pizza, Tacos ,Chocolate Truffle, Cold
Coffee and Nutella Milk Shake.

Genre week
This year grades 4&5 celebrated Genre Week on 28 th September.
I am sure you will be curious to know what we did on Genre Week.
S
o what we did was, we performed skits and role plays of different
stories from different genres. The genres we chose were:
Grade 4
Historical fiction –“ Onwards to Colchester”
Fairy-tale – “
Realistic fiction –“Street Child”
Grade 5
Adventure – “Beowulf”
Fantasy – “Harry Potter”
Realistic fiction – “ The Missing Trophy”
Spy thriller – “ Mission Impossible”
We enjoyed celebrating genre week because we ourselves designed
our own costumes and planned the story we enacted.

Pooriyambakkam Teachers Visit
We had a very special visit from the teachers of ASSEFA Foundation
from the village of Pooriyambakkam. They spent the whole day observing
the classes and had talks with our co-ordinators. They were
impressed with our activity based learning. They observed both nonacademic
and academic classes. Looking forward for another visit.

Kannagi Nagar Visit
Grades 9 to 12 have taken up a social cause to help the
children of Kannagi Nagar to enhance their spoken skills in English.
Rain or shine, every alternate Sunday, a group of 5 children
accompanied by 3 teachers work along with “Ink Heart
Academy” conduct sessions with kids

A visit not to
forget :

First of, I want to thank Chandra Prabha Aitwal,
fondly known as Didi and Shashank
Subramanyam for doing what they did and
made our school and day 100 times better.
First let’s start with Shashank Subramanyam.
He melted our brains with beautiful
classical music using the flute, it literally put
me to sleep. Good way to unwind after a
day at school. Did you know that he was
Grammy nominated which is the ‘Academy
awards of Music’?

Now onto Didi’s visit, she’s from Assam but
she’s no ordinary woman from Assam. She
is one of the first women to conquer the
Mount Everest and climb the Nanda Devi
peak. She is a Padma Sree and Arjuna
Awardee. Her visit has immensely inspired
to stay focused on our goals and do not
stop till we get there!
I look forward to more such visits to our
school by eminent persons

Monday was very pleasing with
the renowned flautist,
“Shashank Subramaniam”

The music gave us a very peaceful
and calm mind. He played the
song “Vandemataram” beautifully.
They used instruments such as:

VIOLIN
BAMBOO FLUTE

The music was very pleasant and
I felt very proud to be in his concert
at HLC. I am sure everybody
in HLC (KG to Higher Secondary)
would have enjoyed the music
program.

Sports Day
Our Principal Sudha Aunty
declared the Sports Day open!
We had plenty of team events
such as basketball,football,
dodge ball and kabbadi.
We also had track events that included
100m,200m,400m and
even a relay!
It was a lot of fun cheering for
our housemates in our house
tent! House points were given for
discipline and enthusiastic
cheering!
Field events such as long jump,
high jump and shot put were also
conducted.
