at the Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare 

Centre in the warmth and comfort of 

our heated Lecture room apart from 

Sept 30th of course!

informative and useful to anybody who 

owns and cares for a horse.

MAGIC, MYTH OR SIMPLY A METHOD 

Horsemart 

Sue Gardner has worked full time in 

the horse industry for over 30 years, 

helping horse owners and their horses. 

Sue answers to many titles, one of 

which is Horse Whisperer, but what 

exactly is that? so it is time to stop 

Whispering to the horse and talk this 

through with the human. 

Gifted people are in every area of life, 

so it comes as no surprise that there 

have always been gifted horsemen who 

could train and heal, however they 

mostly did it in secret, behind stable 

doors and in silence, so the title Horse 

Whispering came about. There was talk 

of blowing up noses and whispering 

into ears but for the best part, noone 

was sure! Was it healing or was it 

training. 

Google Horse Whispering and what 

comes up is the book and the film 

‘The Horse Whisperer’. The book, 

published in 1995 was a best seller, 

Robert Redford had already bought 

the rights to the film and he employed 

Buck Branaman, a highly successful 

trainer, to be on set and train him and 

the horses. The perception of a horse 

whisperer was about to change! now 

it took on the guise of a cowboy who 

worked the horse in a round pen and 

magically transformed the horse from 

dangerous to safe. 

In 1996 Monty Roberts published a 

book called The Man who listens to 

Horses and through his work with the 

Queens horses and his round pen work, 

he soon became very famous and was 

also labelled a Horse Whisperer. 

Pat Parelli also gained this title when 

he was seen to ride bareback and 

bridleless as well as train horses at 

liberty. His method starts with having 

a deep understanding of innate horse 

behavior as well as human behaviour. 

Carry on down your google search and 

you will see horse communicators 

and healers join the title of Horse 

Whisperers. 

So, who or what is the true Horse 

Whisperer, it has become a generic 

term for anyone who is very good 

with horses and that encompasses 

the gifted person, the horse healer & 

communicator, and those who have 

learnt a great deal about horses. To 

be honest the horses do not care what 

you call yourself, what they care about 

is that you understand their innate 

needs and that you treat them with 

understanding and compassion.

HORSE BEDDING 

STRAW 

Seen as an old fashioned bedding material and is one of the 

cheapest beddings on the market. Straw is considered the 

best bedding for foaling as shavings can stick to the foal and 

can carry a risk of infection if small particles get within the 

loal or mare. 

WOOD PELLETS 

These are made from heat-treated and compact sawdust. 

To use them, water has to be added to fluff them up and 

increase their absorbency. They are seen as a cost effective 

bedding, with some people only adding in one bale per week

to create a thick bed. It is also worth considering cardboard, 

which has similar advantages to paper but is heavier and less 

likely to blow around the yard. 

Purpose-produced shavings are a popular type of bedding, 

but the quality can vary enormously — particularly with 

regards to dust content. It is important that you only buy 

shavings that have been specifically produced as animal 

bedding.

We’ve had more people than ever buying and selling 3.5 tonne horseboxes 

on Horsemart.co.uk. We’ve taken a look at some of the best on the market, 

and answered some of the most popular questions. 

It’s unsurprising that these small, convenient lorries have 

rocketed in popularity in recent years. Not only can you 

drive a 3.5 tonne lorry on a standard car licence, but they 

also add a bit of luxury to days at shows, with their living 

space and features. More importantly, it is thought that they 

give a smoother rider for the horses, making their 

experience comfortable and safe. 

Travelling time is often overlooked, but it is key to 

remember that travelling a horse is in fact ‘work’ for them. 

A horse will use a lot of energy whilst travelling holding 

balance, and through adrenaline. It is paramount to 

performance that they have a good journey to their event, 

and in turn it is also important to give the horse a 

comfortable ride home to ensure they have a good recovery.

which benefits from a tack and changing room at the rear 

which is totally separate from the horse area. Relatively new 

to the market is the revolutionary lightweight Equi-Trek Atom 

which is possibly the only 3.5 tonne horsebox on the market 

legally capable of transporting two large horses, thanks to the 

composite fibreglass panels which ensure maximum strength 

and payload. Equi-Trek are suppliers to many of the industry’s 

leading riders and also to the British Equestrian Teams. A full

Alexanders Grand National lorry is ideal 

for those single horse owners who also 

want luxury travel and facilities at their 

disposal. The Alexanders Grand National 

is popular with its full overnight living 

and it includes seating for 3-4 people 

which pulls out to create a double bed, 

removable table, wardrobe, highline 

storage cupboards, gas hob and sink 

and it is finished in either light or dark 

oak with different levels of luxury. 

The horse area includes the self 

collapsing breast bar system, large 

opening windows for maximum 

ventilation and 2 external tack lockers 

for the saddles and bridles. It has 750kg 

payload on 3.5 tonne chassis but we can 

upgrade the horsebox to 3.9 tonne to 

allow 1200kg payload if you are carrying 

2 horses. 

If payload is your priority, then the 

Alexanders York model is ideal, with 

a payload of up to 2000kg depending 

on the features you select. It’s a stylish 

design, capable of 40mpg and comes 

with a 4 year Renault warranty. 

The Oakley Sport 2 is also a popular 

choice. Oakley is a brand that has 

been around for many years, offering 

exceptional customer service. As Brian

these 3.5 tonne lorries are perfect 

for taking horses to events. Their 

unique stallion design, is perfect for 

unpredictable travellers and young 

horses as they do not have a breast bar. 

The horses are separated by either 

a full or 3/4 height padded partition 

and 2 full height grilled access doors 

(leading to the groom area) eliminating 

the need for a breast bar. The Foxy 

boxes also feature a low ramp, which is 

brilliant for difficult loaders.

WHAT IS PAYLOAD? 

Payload is the amount of weight your lorry can legally 

carry. Everything needs to be taken into account - 

the horses, the tack, water, people, dogs; absolutely 

everything.

If your box has a 1000kg payload, you need to add up the 

weight of your horse and everything else travelling within 

the box, to ensure you are under this weight.

The Sonic is a compact, easy to drive 

horsebox. It can be driven by anyone with 

a standard car license aged over 21 giving 

effortless performance and outstanding 

economy. The Sonic has the added benefit 

of a tack/changing room that is totally 

separate from the horses. This incorporates 

two saddle racks, two bridle racks and two 

coat hooks. There is also additional storage
