Jim Parry
Darwin Foodies
Welcome to our second issue of Coolalinga Central magazine! A big
thank you to our very supportive community for the overwhelmingly positive
and encouraging feedback received for our first issue.
The excitement kicked in while planning this second issue; we aim to be
different. The loose idea was to feature wellness, food & drinks for the buildup,
Christmas gifts ideas and a local hero, a fire fighter. When we bounced
off the idea to Christine Simpson of Litchfield Council during one of our
casual chats, Christine suggested we speak to Fleur O’Connor, a volunteer
fire fighter at the rural area. After talking with Fleur, we found ourselves
photo shooting in a newly burnt out area at the back of Bundey Road with
Fleur all geared up telling us stories about fire fighting. Our first impression
of Fleur - a young, courageous lady with sweet personality.
In this issue, we bring you to the outback to rediscover the charming iconic
Humpty Doo Hotel that was built in 1964 and survived Cyclone Tracy. We
would like to thank Jim Parry who lent us his amazing red Triumph and the
management of Humpty Doo Hotel that allowed us to use the hotel as a
backdrop for our fashion photoshoot. This fashion season is all flowery and
glamorous but unpretentious.
Flip through the pages to find out more about our fabulous tenants,
upcoming activities to take place in the centre and an article from Wayne
Zerbe who witnessed the “Then & Now” of Coolalinga.
- FINANCIAL WELLNESS -
- FINANCIAL WELLNESS -
Wellness /ˈwɛlnəs/
The quality or
state of being
healthy in
body and mind
especially as
the result of
deliberate effort.
...ALL ABOUT
WELLNESS
finance /
mind / body
YOUR GUIDE
TO FINANCIAL WELLNESS.
Financial wellness is knowing how healthy your finances
are. Regardless of how wealthy you are. It’s about
having the knowledge and control of what’s coming
in and going out. This enables you to be confident that
you can cope with any financial emergencies that may
arise, be savvy with your investments/savings and have
a clear plan in place. This means looking at your bank
statements with confidence, instead of fear and knowing
you can pay your bills, save a little each month and still
have enough to live your life.
To help you achieve your financial wellness goals we’ve
put together some easy steps to follow to ensure your
finances are fighting fit!
1. PLAN
This doesn’t have to be a daunting process! Take 10
minutes and write down your financial goals, it may be as
grand as a new home or as simple as a quick getaway.
If you are in a relationship involve your partner in this
process so you are on the same path. Break down your
goal into ‘bite size pieces’. For example if want to go on a
holiday that is going to cost $8,000 and you plan on going
in 12 months’ time, you can aim to save approx. $670 per
month or $153 per week to reach your goal.
2. REVIEW
Do a budget (Handy link: https://www.moneysmart.gov.
au/tools-and-resources/calculators-and-apps/budgetplanner)
and take a look at your regular spending
patterns so you have a clear idea of where your money
is going and if you are spending more than you are
earning. If you are overspending look at any extras you
can cut back on such as buying lunch/coffee regularly or
subscriptions you don’t use or need.
3. STAY POSITIVE
Having a positive mindset towards money can be a vital
and empowering step towards achieving results. Try to
be realistic when setting your goals as this can prevent
disappointment and anxiety if you do overspend.
4. RISK PROTECTION
Review your insurances and ensure that you and your
family are adequately covered should you encounter any
health issues or large unexpected expenses. There are
many different types of insurance for example Life, Home,
Contents, Car, Liability, Income Protection and Permanent
Disability (to name a few!).
5. FIND AN EXPERT
The best part about getting financially fit is that you don’t
have to do it alone! There are experts that can help you
every step of the way and set up a clear plan to help you
on your way to your financial dreams.
For more information, or help with any or all of the above,
contact our friendly team to discuss how we can get you
on your way to Financial Wellness.
- STORY -
COOLALINGA
THEN & NOW
A STORY BY WAYNE ZERBE
Cool Kids Activities
I
first got involved in
what was to become
Coolalinga Central in
2009. I have been involved
with Even Lynne for many
years and have always
been amazed at his insight
into the development
industry in the Top End.
Having watched him and his team take Cullen
Bay from virgin scrub to one of our most vibrant
commercial, retail and residential precincts, to
the developments at Tipperary Waters and the
towering Mantra building, when he said he planned
to build a shopping centre at Coolalinga I figured it
would work because Even said it would. As usual he
was right on the money.
To do a project like this anywhere in Australia is a
big challenge, to do it in an area that was a bit of a
no mans land, and at that time an underdeveloped
rural area was a giant challenge. A challenge that
Even and his team were up to.
First item of business, attract an anchor tenant. This is
where I was able to play a small part. I had been dealing
with the Coles group for several years and was able to get
contacts that would advance the cause. It wasn’t easy,
dealing with these big guys but persistence costs nothing,
so that’s what we did, persist. There were many frustrations
along the way, but one fine day the Coles guy finally got
to Darwin. The late Hans Voss, Even and myself met with
said Coles guy with a model of the shopping centre at the
old Travelodge. Bingo, a starting point.
The actual construction of Coolalinga was a wonderful
lift for our construction industry. Even is a local so it was
locals who built, supplied and benifitted from this project.
Coolalinga Central now stands as a bright shiny testament
to Even’s vision.
I was honourned to MC the opening, it was wonderful to
watch the way the locals embraced what will be a major
asset to our rural area.
As I said at the opening, people said of Even and his
project, “tell him he is dreaming” and he was, and
because he was dreaming, thousands of local kids will
have jobs for years, better yet many will have careers in
retail and service industries, local suppliers will benefit and
our rural area will have an iconic community centre.
- INTERVIEW -
15MIN WITH
FLEUR O’CONNOR
CAPTAIN OF VIRGINIA/ BEES CREEK
VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE
The 2016/2017 Wet Season brought
the NT a good wet, but with a good
wet brings fuel for the fire.
In between fighting fires, we sat down
with Fleur, a local volunteer fire fighter
with the Virginia/Bees Creek Volunteer
Fire Brigade to talk about life as a
volunteer
local firefighter brigade because I thought it would be a
good way to meet my neighbours/people in the area. I
also really wanted to challenge myself and do something
totally different to my day-to-day work.
I love it that much that I have been with Virginia Bees
Creek Volunteer Fire Brigade for six years now; and I’ve
been Captain for nearly four of those years.
Q: Tell us about bush fire situation in the Northern Territory
and how busy are you during the dry season?
A: I think most Top Enders welcomed the fact that we
actually had a decent Wet Season in 2016-17. However
with such great rain, brings increased fuel loading. So this
Dry Season has kept us fairly busy compared to last year;
with the majority of jobs we attended were wildfires.
As rural landholders, it is really important to maintain
firebreaks. Not only does it help protect your property,
but it provides us with access around your block to help
save your property (or your neighbours) in the event or
threat of a wildfire. It was disheartening to see on a few
occasions of jobs I attended where some property owners
decided firebreaks were not worth investing in. This causes
issues for us in that the time to provide direct attack to a
fire is sometimes delayed because access is not readily
available. While we have 4WDs they do have limitations!
There are some great businesses out in the local area that
provide slashing services, alternatively make the most out
of the free herbicide that the NT Government provide to
help combat Gamba Grass.
Q: Is this a dangerous job? Any advice to young people
who would like to become a fire fighter.
A: There are inherent risks in all jobs or type of work, but the
Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service provides training
and appropriate protective clothing to all volunteers. The
training prepares us on the operational and safety aspects
of firefighting, including familiarisation of fire behaviour,
the equipment and appliances they use. When we are
out on a job, safety of our members is our number one
priority.
As rural landholders, it is really
important to maintain firebreaks to
protect your property and to provide
us with access around your block to
help save your property in the event
or threat of a wildfire.
I would highly encourage any young person to join. If they
ever had any doubts about becoming a fire fighter, just
call your local brigade so we can talk you through the
duties and expectations of becoming a member… you
would never be thrown in the deep end and once you
start out as a junior you take things at your own pace!
Q:How much of time commitment is required of volunteer
firefighters?
A: Each rural brigade is different in relation to rostering,
but most are flexible. I tell my members that you really only
need to put in as much time as you can commit; work life
balance is really important and that includes volunteering
time.
Q:Did you dream of being a firefighter since you were a
kid, and what has been your proudest moment to date?
A: I have to be honest, becoming a fire fighter was never
a dream of mine as a child. However now that I am a
volunteer fire fighter, I encourage people all the time to
join; young, old, female, male. It has provided me with
great friendships, new skills and a confidence that there is
no barrier to the physical characteristics of this job.
My proudest moment was being selected by my brigade
as Captain – they have put their trust and faith in me that
I have the ability to do the job. I do my best to serve them
well.
Q:Do firefighters still slide down poles, or is that
antiquated?
“I would highly encourage any
young person to join. ”
A: This actually still occurs! I can confidently say that
Darwin Fire Station has a couple of poles that fire fighters
use when they get called out to a job.
We are always looking for volunteers!
Give us a call anytime!!
Virginia / Bees Creek Volunteer Fire Brigade
PO Box 20 Coolalinga NT 0839
Phone: 8988 2453
Q: What is the most challenging task you have
Q: Tell us a little about yourself e.g.
occupation, daily life, family.
A: I am Darwin born and bred and grew up
in the rural area. I’m fairly busy juggling work,
social, sporting and volunteer commitments.
I work in government as an Assistant Director,
so basically I work in an office environment –
very safe and out of the Darwin elements.
Q: Why do you want to volunteer in fire
fighting? How long have you been doing this?
A: I wanted to become a volunteer for the
encountered?
A: Managing a Brigade! While I am a manager in my
occupation, a big challenge is ensuring we have sufficient
volunteers available to provide this vital service to the
community. Volunteers are motivated for different reasons
as to why they join the brigade and each and every one
of us have different priorities at any point in time – this
means that volunteers come and go, or their availability
may sometimes be limited. Our Brigade is lucky to have
such a diverse group of people, but we are always
recruiting; so if you’re interested in checking out what we
do we would love to hear from you!!
