Dear Fans of Central Catholic Hockey,
As we turn our calendars to October, and as I write this le er it can only mean one thing
– Viking hockey is right around the corner! It never ceases to amaze me the changes in
skill, speed, and body mass that our athletes undergo from freshman to senior year. It is
truly a testament to the commitment of the players, coaches, and parents. Our hockey
program had a very successful season last year and I look forward to watching our
hockey teams compete in the upcoming season.
One important dimension of the Central Catholic mission is the Chris an Brothers belief
that community is a sign of God's presence among us. Consequently, building genuine
community is an important – some would say defining – element of a Central Catholic
educa on. The team spirit and brotherhood witnessed by the Central Catholic studentathletes
is an inspiring example of this sen ment. Central Catholic is one of the most
geographically diverse student bodies in the region and todays' Vikings come from
countless neighborhoods, parishes and school districts represen ng three coun es in
southwestern Pennsylvania. Building this genuine community requires everyone's
commitment – parents, coaches, teachers, staff, and Brothers. This important work
starts when some of these boys first step on the ice for middle school hockey and
con nues long a er these young men receive their diplomas at Soldiers and Sailors
Memorial Hall. Through daily interac on in class and par cipa on in athle cs and extracurricular
ac vi es, friendships are established that last a life me. Genera ons of Viking
friendships formed and bonded on the ice have outlasted the tests of me and give
credence to our commitment to being an authen c community. The hockey team is a
key part of our achieving this goal.
On behalf of the Chris an Brothers, administra on and faculty, I thank our Boosters,
parents, coaches and players for crea ng a team worthy of the Central Catholic tradi on.
Enjoy the season and celebrate the skills, good sportsmanship and healthy rivalry that
makes Viking hockey such an important part of our community!
Live Jesus in our Hearts. . . . Forever!
Br. Tony Baginski, FSC
Principal

Tradition as defined in the dictionary “an inherited, established, or customary pattern of
thought, action, or behavior.” For many it is just a word, for the family of Central
Catholic it is truly a bond that ties those first young men in 1927 to the current day
student body. “Tradition of Excellence” has never been truer today for our Central
Catholic Viking Hockey program.
Again, this year we have 60 young men proudly wearing the Viking horns, committed to
build on last year's success. The 2016-17 Vikings exciting run to the PIHL Penguins Cup
Final set the bar for future Vikings. Our players know that with hard work and
commitment, anything can be accomplished and this year's team has been working hard
to uphold the tradition of excellence both on and off the ice. As John Wooden said, “It
takes time to create excellence. If it could be done quickly, more people would do it.” We
look forward to watching all of our teams work to achieve their goals during the 2017-18
season.
Our young men truly are men of faith, scholarship and service, meeting rigorous
guidelines established by the Christian Brothers in an effort to grow our boys to men in
the four years they spend at 4720 Fifth Avenue. During their time with the ice hockey
program, we bring their faith into the locker room and on the ice, with prayer, displays of
sportsmanship, and by welcoming all of the challenges we encounter. Their scholarship is
displayed by meeting the high academic standards of Central Catholic simultaneously
with the rigorous athletic program necessary to be competitive on the ice. Service is
displayed by contributing yearly in a program wide service project designed not only to
assist the community in some special way, but also to teach the boys valuable lessons that
can only be learned when assisting others in need.
We thank the Christian Brothers for their continued support of our players on and off the
ice. We thank the school administration and coaching staff for their unwavering support
as the program continues to grow at a fast rate. We thank the parents, whose support
through volunteer hours and monetary support help their children round out their
experience at Central Catholic through this great sport of ice hockey. Finally, we would
especially like to thank all of our sponsors for their continued support.
We look forward to following each of our teams as they continue their journey on the ice
and through the mystical halls of Central Catholic.
About Central Catholic
The History
Shortly after the Most Reverend Hugh C. Boyle was elevated to the
episcopacy, he began a secondary school expansion program in Pittsburgh.
To support the development of centralized, well-equipped high schools, the
Bishop organized a campaign in 1923 to raise funds. The irst fruit of the
campaign was the erection of Central District Catholic High School and
faculty house in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.
The architectural style is Flemish Gothic, whose soaring towers and
buttresses express strength and solidity. In the auditorium, the large stained
glass windows represent the various countries from which the Catholic
population of Pittsburgh originally migrated. Inscribed on each window is
the seal of the country, the names of its patron saint and two of its notable
Catholic citizens. The countries represented on the left side of the auditorium (moving from front to rear)
are Ireland, Spain, Germany, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Switzerland. On the right
side, moving in the same order, are England, Italy, Poland, France, Bohemia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and
Belgium.
The new high school was dedicated by Bishop Boyle on 11 September 1927. On the following day 488 boys,
from 42 parishes in the central section of the city, registered in the ninth grade, the only grade functioning
that year. On the original faculty were fourteen Christian Brothers.
In the 1950s, enrollment reached a peak of 1,800. A concentrated effort by the school Administration
brought the enrollment down to a size more consistent with the physical facilities and modern educational
trends.
The average class size has been reduced from 45 to 21 students. Today the student body numbers about
845 boys, taught by 10 Christian Brothers, 55 lay faculty, and one priest. The students have approximately
100 course offerings from which to choose. The academic program remains in the forefront of
contemporary educational approaches.
In 1978, Alumni Hall was opened. The building provided long-needed, expanded facilities for the school’s
physical education, intramural and athletic programs. Academic facilities were upgraded with state-of-theart
biology, physics, and chemistry laboratories. Donated by Mr. & Mrs. John Ryan, Jr., the Ryan Science
Center meets the demands of the contemporary science curriculum. In addition, some of the proceeds from
the annual Viking Victory Auction were used to renovate classrooms and faculty of ices, create a computer
lab, and equip the building for computer technology programs.
In 2000, the Blue & Gold capital campaign was established to renovate the athletic ield, the old gym, and
Alumni Hall. The campaign also provided a synthetic grass ield to accommodate year-round usage. The
remodeled old gym now includes Coaches’ Pavilion, a itness complex, and the Peter J. Spadaro Performing
Arts Center, accommodating the music and drama programs.

Mission
Central Catholic High School, a college preparatory school for boys, is guided by the educational principles
of St. John Baptist de La Salle. The school strives to provide a challenging, relevant, and diverse program of
studies and extracurricular activities in an environment that fosters a life of faith and learning and develops
leaders rooted in the Gospel values of integrity, respect, service, justice, and peace.
The Central Catholic Promise: To inspire boys to become Men of Faith, Men of Scholarship, Men of Service.

Central Catholic offers Ice Hockey as a club sport at the Varsity, Junior
Varsity and Middle School levels. The Vikings compete in the PIHL
(Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League) at the Class AAA Level. The Vikings utilize many of the area
ice facilities for practice and game slots. While currently utilizing two area ice facilities for practice, the goal
of our program is to have our players on the ice an average of 3-4 times per week in either practice or games.
The hockey program also utilizes the school weight room and gym facilities for player off-ice conditioning.

What has Central Catholic taught you?
Central has taught me many things but most
important to lead by example on and off the
ice.
Who has influenced your hockey career or who
do you admire and why?
My Mom and Dad have influenced me greatly.
They taught me work ethic and to never give
up. I will always be thankful to my Dad, who
was up early every weekend taking me to
games and practices and my Mom for making
sure we had everything we needed when we
went on hockey trips.
What is your favorite quote?
"The name on the front is a hell of a lot more
important than the one on the back." - Herb
Brooks
If you could pick one hockey player, past or
present, to have dinner with, who would it be
and why?
Patrick Kane, he is the best American hockey
player in the NHL today.
What are your plans for after graduation?
I plan on going to college to pursue a business
career and play club hockey.
What would you want your teammates to
remember about you?
I want my teammates to remember that every
time I stepped on the ice, a team win was more
important than any individual achievement.
What would you "will" to an underclassman
and who would you "will" it to?
To all underclassmen, don't take for granted
that it is an honor to play for Central Catholic
and play every shift of every game as if it were
your last. It goes fast!
goalie.
What are your plans for after
graduation?
To continue playing hockey or attend
college.
What would you want your teammates
to remember about you?
That I was a guy they could count on both
on and off the ice.
I will the ability to stay calm and not let
anything bother you in the net to Coyne
Viking Senior
What was your greatest Central Catholic
Hockey moment and why?
My greatest Central Catholic hockey moment is scoring
the first Central goal to start our comeback in the
Penguins Cup semifinal game against Seneca Valley in
2017.
What has Central Catholic taught you?
Central Catholic has taught me brotherhood
extends beyond family.
Who has influenced your hockey career or
who do you admire and why?
The two most influential people in my hockey career are
my dad and brother. My dad was there to coach my
7:00am or 9:00pm practices, rain or shine, ice or snow. I
learned commitment and dedication from him. My
brother, JK, was always there with advice, both solicited
and unsolicited, and to offer a challenge in the backyard.
I learned from him how to compete until you beat the
unbeatable.
Brian Freyvogel
What is your favorite quote?
"When you pull on that jersey, the name on the
If you could pick one hockey player, past or
present, to have dinner with, who would it be
The player I'd most want to have dinner with is
Herb Brooks because in 1980 he coached a group of
college students to Olympic history in the stunning
defeat of the USSR.
What are your plans for after graduation?
My plans after graduation are to attend college in
pursuit of an engineering degree.
What would you want your teammates to
Getting to the Pens Cup and playing in it last
year was exciting. Also, going to Nationals
sophomore and junior year and spending
time with the team.
What has Central Catholic taught you?
Central has taught me to work hard and
how important brotherhood is.
Who has influenced your hockey career
(Central Catholic) and Clairessa (Neil Armstrong). They live
in Bethel Park. Skyler has played hockey for 9 years, 4 with
Central Catholic Viking Hockey.
What would you "will" to an
underclassman and who would you
"will" it to?
I’d will to my brother, Colby, the knowledge
that the years at Central go by very quickly
and that he should enjoy them while they
last.

Viking Senior
Jacob Guest
What was your greatest Central
Catholic Hockey moment and why?
Finding the light switch in the Harmarville
locker room so we could turn off the lights and
nap before Monday practices.
What has Central Catholic taught you?
It has taught me perseverance, hard work, and
the importance of brotherhood.
Who has influenced your hockey career
or who do you admire and why?
My Dad has been the greatest influence over
my hockey career by far. From coaching, to
watching from the bleachers, he has always
been there to guide me and help me grow.
Through the good times and bad he has always
been there to show me the way.
What is your favorite quote?
“When your life flashes before your eyes, make
sure you have something to watch."
If you could pick one hockey player, past or
present, to have dinner with, who would it be
and why?
Jake Tepe, because he always picks up the bill.
What are your plans for after graduation?
Study business or computer engineering
wherever I end up.
What would you want your teammates to
remember about you?
My pre-game locker room playlist.
What would you "will" to an underclassman
and who would you "will" it to?
I will my height to Dayne Martin.
Number: 14 | Right Wing | Height: 6' 3"| Weight: 160
Jake is the son of Amy and Steve, and brother to Meagan
(Florida State), Jennifer (University of South Carolina, Sophie
(Avonworth Middle School). They live in Ohio Township and
attend St. Mary’s Glenfield. Jake has played hockey for 13
years, 4 with Central Catholic Viking Hockey.

Zachary Lesniakowski
Viking Senior
What was your greatest Central Catholic
Hockey moment and why?
It was my Junior year as the JV starter and it was
the first playoff win in several years.
What has Central Catholic taught you?
Central Catholic taught me what it means to be in
the Central Brotherhood. The Christian
Brotherhood for me has truly made friendships
that will last a lifetime. It has also taught me a
good work ethic that you have to work hard and
put in a strong effort to achieve your goals.
Who has influenced your hockey career
or who do you admire and why?
The Central Catholic Ice Hockey coaching staff.
They saw my potential freshman year and were
willing to work with me and develop my skills,
especially Coach Petrella and Coach Eller. I
developed a special relationship with Coach Eller
by seeing him every day at school and helping
mentor me not just for hockey but academically.
What is your favorite quote?
"Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines"
- Robert H. Schuller
If you could pick one hockey player, past
or present, to have dinner with, who
would it be and why?
Marc Andre Fleury because he seems like a cool
dude. I would like to get some goalie pointers and
learn how to be a better teammate.
What are your plans for after
graduation?
I plan on attending college and pursuing a career
in Environmental Studies and Public Policy.
Number: 31| Position: Goalie | Height: 6’ | Weight: 145
Zach is the son of Todd & Mary Jo. They live in Forest Hills and
attend St. Maurice Parish. Zach has played Central Catholic
Viking hockey for 4 years.
What would you want your teammates
to remember about you?
I want them to remember my dedication to the
team and helping them out in any way I could.
What would you "will" to an
underclassman and who would you
"will" it to?
I would will the knowledge that these next four
years go by very fast and enjoy and cherish every
moment you have as a Viking.

Viking Senior
Mac Martin
What was your greatest Central Catholic
Hockey moment and why?
My greatest Central Catholic Hockey moment is the
whole playoff journey last season. The entire
journey really just made me row closer with the
guys and realize how special a group of guys we
have here.
What has Central Catholic taught you?
Central has taught me that one place can change a
group of strangers to brothers. It’s really special
here.
Who has influenced your hockey career or who
do you admire and why?
Ryan Haag, he has always been a player that I have
looked up to and wanted to be like. The way he
played and carried himself on and off the ice made
me want to recreate that for myself. He has always
been a model player for me.
What is your favorite quote?
“The 4 looks like a window”
-Bill Connolly
If you could pick one hockey player, past or
present, to have dinner with, who would it be
and why?
I would pick Alex Ovechkin, just because he’s the
man.
What are your plans for after graduation?
I plan to attend college and pursue accounting.
What would you want your teammates to
remember about you?
I want everyone to remember about me that no
matter how serious or sad things got during the
season, I always laughed and had fun. If you don’t
have fun and enjoy your time there’s no point in
playing.
What would you "will" to an underclassman
and who would you "will" it to?
I would “will” the idea of leadership and hard work
to my brother Dayne. I want him to continue to
grow and become a better player.
Number: 32 | Forward | Height: 5' 11"| Weight: 175
Mac is the son of Sean and Tracy, and brother to Dayne
(CCHS ’19), Tully (St. Joseph School). They live in Penn
Hills and attend St. Joseph Parish. Mac has played hockey
for 10 years, 7 with Central Catholic Viking Hockey.

Nick Nuzzo
Viking Senior
What was your greatest Central Catholic Hockey
moment and why?
My greatest Central Catholic hockey moment was freshman
year playing against Erie Cathedral Prep. It was late in the
game and we were looking for a rally. Being new to the team
I wasn't very outgoing on the ice. However Coach Petrella
told me to go out next shift and make some noise. So I went
out and laid a clean open ice hip check, which flipped one of
the Cathedral Prep forwards. The bench went crazy and it
felt good being able to make a small play that would rally the
team late in the third.
What has Central Catholic taught you?
Central Catholic has taught me to be the best man I can be
both in school and outside of it. Faith, Scholarship, and
Service have become the primary principals by which I live
my life every day. It has also given me a sense of
brotherhood among 200 plus students. I didn't believe in
brotherhood when I first walked in the doors, however four
years later it’s all I know. The sense of brotherhood at
Central is something I'll have until I die, and I will cherish it
forever.
Who has influenced your hockey career or who do
you admire and why?
My parents have greatly influenced my hockey career. From
early morning weekend games and practices to late night
HS hockey games, my parents were there every step of the
way. Without them I wouldn't be where I am today, and
certainly wouldn't have hockey. I admire my parents very
much because they are the hardest working people I know.
They work tirelessly to provide me the opportunities to go
to Central and play hockey, and all the other things I'm a
part of. I hope to give my own kids the same opportunities
my parents gave and continue to give to me.
Number: 27 | Center | Height: 5’ 9”| Weight: 150
Nick is the son of J. and Tammy and brother to Anthony
(Central Catholic), Alaina, and Luke (both at Mother of Sorrows
School). They live in Murrysville and attend Mother of Sorrows
Parish. Nick has played hockey for 10years, 4 as a Central
Catholic Viking.
What is your favorite quote?
“Saturday's are for the Boys.”
- The Boys
If you could pick one hockey player, past or present,
to have dinner with, who would it be and why?
Sidney Crosby because he is one of the greatest to
ever play the game.
What are your plans for after graduation?
I plan to major in business finance with minors in sports
marketing and sports law. I hope to attend Miami University
at Oxford Ohio.
What would you want your teammates to remember
about you?
I'd like my teammates to remember me as a hardworking
player who although isn't the best, gives his all every chance
he gets.
What would you "will" to an underclassman and who
would you "will" it to?
I'd will my '09 Honda Civic to CJ Simione. He needs
something to attract the ladies.

It has been a key element of our
Your dad coaching, years of early morning practices, knee
hockey in hotel halls, your older sisters in the stands
distracting the boys on the ice, your team taking over the hot
tub after a big win, your little sister's motivational note's on the
team water bottles that you secretly put on a team mates back
during a game, and me- forever trying to wash the stink out of
