CHAPTER ONE
‘The Silver Harpoon’
Everybody in Mouseville knew Ricer and his gang. They
left a trail of broken windows, upturned dustbins, and graffiticovered
walls wherever they went. Stallholders hastily covered
their wares if the hoodlum rodents showed their roguish faces
at the market, and even the scruffy seagulls flapped off with
an uneasy squawk when Ricer’s Micers sauntered out onto the
docks.
The city police had been trying to catch the gang for
months, but Ricer and his boys somehow always ma naged to
escape by a whisker. They knew all the best hiding places, in
part because they’d created most of them.
Now it was time to discuss their next dirty deed. The surly,
burly Ricer had a plan.
“We’re going down to the docks today, boys.”
“Oooh, are we going on a luxury cruise?” Dodum asked,
1.
A Hétágú Szigony
Ismerik a
város összes rejtekhelyét.
Most is éppen portyára készülődnek. Rizsa, a mindenre
elszánt, izmos bandavezér új ötlettel állt elő.
– Ma a kikötőbe megyünk.
– Levegőzünk egy kicsit? – röhögött Bumbu, az alvezér.
– Sétálgatunk, nézelődünk – bólogatott Rizsa vigyorogva.
Aztán elkomolyodott. – Elnézünk a Hétágú Szigonyhoz.
Ricer’s second in command. “I would love that!” He lay back
on a barrel, closed his eyes, and tried to drift off into idle
daydreams about turquoise seas, but Ricer kicked the barrel
out from under him and he came down with a crash, his hard
head hitting the harder cobblestone with a hollow thump. The
others burst out laughing.
“No, lazybones, we’ve got business to tend to,” Ricer said
with a grin, but then he grew serious and spoke in a solemn
tone. “Business in The Silver Harpoon.”
The rest of the gang suddenly went very quiet indeed.
“Why, what business do we have there?” Dodum asked,
rubbing his head.
“I had a little disagreement with the landlord a while back.
So now we’re going to hit him where
it hurts.”
“Are you planning something big?”
Dodum asked, scratching the inside
of his left ear and sniffing his claw.
“You won’t be bored, I can promise
that,” Ricer said mysteriously.
All the mice in the gang whistled
and cheered, eager to show their
support for their leader, not that they would have dared
show anything else. Ricer was a mastermind when it came to
dastardly deeds. Even now he’d slipped something unusual
into his leather bag, but he hadn’t told anyone what it was. He
gave a flick of his tail to signal to Dodum that it was time to
move. The gang jumped to their feet and set off for the docks.
All the while, a little mouse in a striped sweater and baggy
trousers had been hiding nearby behind a pile of crates. He’d
been listening carefully to everything Ricer had said, and this,
most majd elhozunk tőle valamit, amit nagy becsben tart.
– Nagy balhét tervezel? – vakarta meg füle tövét Bumbu.
– Ígérem, nem fogtok unatkozni! – mondta titokzatosan
Rizsa.
A banda tagjai lelkesen füttyögtek, kurjongattak. Rizsa
mindig izgalmas gaztetteket eszelt ki. Most is becsúsztatott
senkinek. Hosszú, mozgékony farkával intett Bumbunak,
hogy indulhatnak. Az egérbanda talpra szökkent, és elszántan
megindultak a kikötő felé.
Egy kőhalom mögül szakadt nadrágos, csíkos pulóveres
kisegér leselkedett. Izgatottan hallgatta Rizsa szavait, és mikor
a banda befordult a következő sarkon, utánuk eredt. Útközben
beletúrt a nadrágjába, hátha talál benne valami rágcsálnivalót,
ennem – gondolta ábrándosan, aztán összeszorította a fogait.
– A végén úgyis bevesznek majd. Megmutatom nekik, mit
tudok! És mire nagy leszek, bandavezér lesz belőlem.
Elszántan lépdelt a banda után. Napok óta árnyékként
követte őket mindenhová.
A banda bekanyarodott a kikötői bazársorra. A
sor elején a kosár- és gyékényfonók bódéi álltak. Rizsa
barátságosan integetett a megrettent árusoknak, Bumbu, az
alvezér eközben felkapott egy nádlevelekből font kosarat,
és a következő árushoz érve néhány marok datolyát dobott
bele. Zikó, a barátja két mandarint csent el a túloldalon. A
legvékonyabb, sárga fogú egér hatalmasat rúgott az útszélen
he thought, was his big chance. He waited for the gang to
disappear around the corner and then hurried after them. His
stomach growled with hunger. He rummaged in his pockets as
he ran along, hoping to find something to munch on, but was
disappointed to discover that, as usual, they were empty.
“If Ricer let me join, I’d always have something to eat,” he
thought, slipping for a moment into idle reverie, but then he
clenched his teeth. “What am I saying, I will join their gang!
I’ll show that lot what I’m made of! And then, when I’m
bigger, I’ll be the one in charge!”
With a new sense of resolve, the little mouse scurried after
them. The gang was now strolling down a long line of market
stalls by the docks. The first few sold baskets. Ricer gave the
anxious stallholders a casual wave, and Dodum picked up a
basket from one of the stalls and filled it with figs from the
neighbouring one.
His pal Zick, who was big and not terribly bright, managed
to swipe a few tangerines from a stall on the other side. Then
a yellow-toothed mouse, the scrawniest of the lot, took a good
kick at a dustbin by the side of the road.
“Cool it, Noodle! We don’t want the cops down here before
we’ve even started,” Ricer shouted, but as he spoke, he skilfully
reached with his tail and lifted a bag of salted pistachios from
a stall behind him. He was soon cracking the delectable nuts
open with this teeth, and since he was feeling more generous
than usual, he tossed the shells to his gang.
The little mouse stuck close behind, determined not to lose
sight of the Micers for a second. He was impressed by Ricer’s
‘pistachio-snatchio’ move, and twitched his own tail a bit to try
the trick himself, though all he managed to do was slap an old
man in the nose by accident. He winced and quickly scurried
álló kukába.
– Fékezd magad, Nudli, ide ne
csődítsd a pandúrokat idő előtt!
– szólt hátra Rizsa, de miközben
beszélt, farka kinyúlt a soron
következő csemegéspult felé, és
észrevétlenül elemelt egy zacskó sós
pisztáciát. A következő pillanatban
már fogával bontogatta a finomságot.
A kisegér szorosan a banda nyomában haladt. Egy
pillanatra sem tévesztette volna szem elől Rizsát. Elismerően
csettintett Rizsa pisztácia-szerző mutatványa láttán, és már
kunkorította is a farkincáját, hogy ő is kipróbálja a trükköt. A
banda közben az öreg kuruzsló sátra elé kanyarodott. A vén
A banda közben befordult a mólóhoz vezető keskeny
utcácskába. Itt állt ugyanis a Hétágú Szigony nevezetű kocsma,
off.
The gang now found themselves standing in front of the old
medicine man’s tent. The medicine man himself hobbled out
and shook his fist at them.
“Clear off, you hooligans! I know perfectly well it was you
who stole my popping powder and ointment the other day!”
Ricer laughed and gestured to the others to keep moving.
The medicine man continued to bellow curses at them, and
indeed he got so carried away with his ranting and raving
that he didn’t even notice the kid following close behind the
pack. As he passed the old man’s tent, the little mouse gave a
flick of his tail, just as he had seen Ricer do, and snatched a
bottle of potion that had been put on a display table to catch
the attention of the passers-by. A tug and a twist and the
bottle was quickly stowed safely away in his pants pocket. The
medicine man was still furiously shaking his fist at the Micers,
so furiously, indeed, that he failed to notice that someone was
actually stealing from him at that very moment.
“I can do this. I really can do this!” the little mouse thought,
and there was suddenly a cocky spring in his step. “I’ll be of so
much use to Ricer when I join his gang.”
In the meantime, the Micers had turned into a narrow
alleyway that led to the docks. One door down from the end
of the lane was the entrance to the inn, The Silver Harpoon.
Haphazardly painted to look as if it were made of silver,
the old harpoon seemed more rust than metal. It hung from
an equally rusty chain over the thick oak door, and it creaked
almost irritably in the sea breeze. Ricer gestured to the others
to stop and pointed to the ancient weapon, now ornament,
with a theatrical wave of his arm. “Now, what do you say to
that?”
Rizsáék mai úti célja. A vastag tölgyfaajtó fölött vörösre
festett, hétágú szigony lógott rozsdás vasláncra erősítve. Rizsa
intett, hogy álljanak meg. Színpadias mozdulattal a szigonyra
mutatott.
– Na, mit szóltok?
– Hát nem piskóta! – bólogatott elismerően Nudli.
– Tudom, hogy nem piskóta, te ütődött. Azért vagyunk itt.
Ez a szigony kell nekem! Kinek van valami ötlete?
Bumbu a homlokát ráncolta.
– Nem lesz könnyű ellopni onnan.
– Ha könnyű lenne, Nudlit küldtem volna egyedül –
legyintett Rizsa.
Bumbu hangosan gondolkozott:
– Azt még el tudom képzelni, hogy észrevétlenül
lefűrészeljük a láncról.
némító kenőcs, amit a múltkor a vén kuruzslótól loptam. De
hogy fogjuk elvinni innen? Ezt hatan se bírjuk felemelni. A
pandúrok meg simán utolérnek, ha ezzel menekülünk.
A banda tanácstalanul állt. Rizsa megvetően köpött egyet.
– Senkinek sincs egy épkézláb ötlete?
A bandatagok a lábujjukat bámulták. Senki sem mert
Rizsára nézni. A hátuk mögött azonban hirtelen megszólalt a
kisegér, aki eddig észrevétlenül követte őket:
– Ide kéne hozni azt a kis kocsit, ami a bazársor szélén áll!
Az ajtó elé állítjuk. Tele van szalmával, senki sem hallja meg,
ha erre zuhan rá a szigony. Aztán csak el kell tolni, két izmos
mancs is elég hozzá. Még futni is lehet vele.
Mindenki odafordult.
– Nicsak, a kölyök! – ámult Zikó. – Te még mindig utánunk
koslatsz?
“A piece of cake!” Noodle said, nodding to Ricer.
“Good, Noodle, I like your confidence. Now tell us, how
shall we make off with it without being caught?”
“Oh, sorry boss, I just thought they might serve cake in
there. I’m starving,’’ replied Noodle. The rest of the gang
nodded in agreement.
Ricer was about to launch into a furious rant when Dodum
piped up.
“It won’t be easy to pinch it from up there.”
“If I’d thought it was going to be easy, I’d have sent Noodle
to do it,” Ricer huffed.
Dodum thought aloud to himself for a second.
“Why don’t we just saw the chain off? It would be easy to
climb up, and nobody would hear the sawing because I’ve got
a tube of Silencing Grease in my pocket that I stole from the
medicine man last time we were passing by. But how would
we ever get it out of here? It looks way too heavy, even for the
six of us. The cops would catch us in a heartbeat if we tried to
make a run for it with that thing on our backs.”
Ricer looked to the other Micers for suggestions, but they
all looked down at their feet, clueless. Ricer spat to show just
how unimpressed he was.
“So not a single one of you has an idea? Nothing?”
They stood stone still.
Then a squeaky voice was heard from the back. It was the
little mouse who had been tailing them unnoticed all day.
“We need to fetch that cart that we passed down by the
stalls. We’ll put it right outside the door. It’s full of straw, so no
one will hear a thing when the harpoon falls into it. Then all
we have to do is wheel it off, and two of us can easily manage
that. I bet we could even run with it if we tried. Problem
– vont vállat a kicsi. – Napok óta úgy követlek, hogy nem
vettetek észre. Ellestem a trükkjeiteket. Tudok lopni,
lopakodni, csúzlival az utca túlsó oldaláról kilövök bármilyen
ablakot. És mindig vannak ötleteim! – nézett Rizsára.
Rizsa elgondolkozott.
– Rendben van, segíthetsz. Aztán majd meglátom,
beveszlek-e.
solved.”
The rest of the mice turned around.
“Well, what do you know? It’s that little brat!” Zick said with
a scornful grin. “You still tagging along?”
“I want to be one of the Micers, I could be really useful,
Ricer,” the little mouse said. “Think about it, I’ve been
following you for days and you never saw me. I’ve been
watching you, and learning all your tricks. I know how to steal
things using my tail, get out of sight in a flash, I can easily
break a window on the other side of the street with a slingshot,
and I’m never short of ideas,” he said with a pleading look.
Ricer thought for a moment. The scrawny kid had a point.
“Alright, kid, we’ll give it a go. If it works, maybe I’ll let you
join the gang. What’s your name?”
“Rumini,” the kid said with a proud smile.
