LEHMANN’S VOLUNTEER EFFORTS<br />

RECOGNIZED BY UI’S MOBILE CLINIC<br />

Susan Lehmann, MSN, RN, clinical assistant<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor, was featured by the University <strong>of</strong> Iowa’s<br />

Mobile Clinic for her significant volunteer efforts.<br />

Lehmann was nominated by members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Mobile Clinic’s board because <strong>of</strong> her dedication to<br />

the organization, her willingness to help, and her<br />

passion for community service.<br />

RUPE ELECTED AS AANPCP<br />

BOARD COMMISSIONER<br />

Kerri Rupe, ARNP, FNP-C, COHN-S, DNP, FAANP,<br />

clinical pr<strong>of</strong>essor, was elected as an American<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> Nurse Practitioners Certification<br />

Program (AANPCP) Board Commissioner. Dr.<br />

Rupe has been actively participating in the item<br />

writing, test validation, and serving on other<br />

committees within the organization, and began her<br />

3-year term as commissioner on January 1, <strong>2017</strong>.<br />

CHERWIN AWARDED DIANA<br />

BENZ CANCER GRANT<br />

Catherine Cherwin, PhD, RN, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor,<br />

was awarded the <strong>2016</strong> Diana Benz Seed Grant<br />

from UI’s Holden Cancer Center for her research<br />

project titled, “GI Symptom Clusters in Solid Tumor<br />

Chemotherapy Patients.” Cherwin and her team<br />

aim to identify GI symptom clusters in patients with<br />

solid tumor diagnoses receiving chemotherapy;<br />

and, determine if GI symptom clusters are related<br />

to symptom interference with daily life or quality<br />

<strong>of</strong> life.<br />

HOMETOWN HAWKEYE: MICHAELA BEAVER<br />

Michaela Beaver (DNP 2014) was featured in<br />

the Hawkeye Caucus for her work at the United<br />

Community Health Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.<br />

DNP ALUMNUS FEATURED IN<br />

JOHNSON & JOHNSON CAMPAIGN<br />

Jimmy Reyes (BSN 2004, MSN 2007, DNP 2010),<br />

associate director <strong>of</strong> practice and education at the<br />

Iowa Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong>, was featured in a Johnson<br />

& Johnson publication about nurses who have<br />

taken their care to the “next level.”<br />

RAKEL’S RESEARCH FUNDED THROUGH<br />

A GRANT FROM AMERICAN PAIN SOCIETY AND<br />

PFIZER<br />

Barbara Rakel, PhD, RN, FAAN, pr<strong>of</strong>essor, and<br />

Kathleen Sluka, PT, PhD, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> physical<br />

therapy in the Carver <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Medicine were<br />

awarded an Independent Grant for Learning and<br />

Change (IGLC) from the American Pain Society<br />

(APS) and Pfizer for her research project titled,<br />

“Development <strong>of</strong> an Electronic Prescription<br />

Bundle <strong>of</strong> Nonpharmacological Strategies for<br />

Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.” Rakel and Sluka<br />

will co-lead this innovative project that aims to put<br />

nonpharmacological pain strategies on the same<br />

level as pharmacological-based methods. Other<br />

collaborators include Stephanie Gilbertson-White,<br />

PhD, APRN-BC, assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Keela Herr,<br />

PhD, RN, AGSF, FGSA, FAAN, associate dean for<br />

faculty and pr<strong>of</strong>essor, and Toni Tripp-Reimer, PhD,<br />

RN, FAAN, pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />

MORE THAN 5,000 ALUMNI AND FRIENDS GAVE<br />

$32 MILLION TO SUPPORT THE UNIVERSITY OF<br />

IOWA COLLEGE OF NURSING<br />

Elizabeth Swanson, PhD, RN, director <strong>of</strong> external<br />

relations and associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor, reported that<br />

more than 5,000 donors contributed over $32<br />

million towards collegiate advancement resulting<br />

in 32 new scholarships and 18 new faculty and<br />

research support funds.<br />

Jesse Weiss (BSN class <strong>of</strong> 2020), was featured<br />

on his path from UIHC pediatric patient to current<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Iowa <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> BSN student<br />

produed by CBS2/FOX28.<br />

HOMETOWN HAWKEYE: TERRI FERRELL<br />

Terri Ferrell (BSN 1974, MA 1975) was featured<br />

in the Hawkeye Caucus for her work at St. Luke’s<br />

Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.<br />
