Business Matters
Third of sick notes
‘for mental health’
NHS research conducted to mark World Mental
Health Day found that one in three sick notes
are issued on the grounds of poor mental health,
making psychiatric problems the most common
reason for people to take time off work.
It is estimated that absenteeism costs UK
businesses approximately £2.4billion per year,
and with mental health now the number one
reason for people to miss work, firms of all sizes
are being asked whether they are doing enough
to proactively tackle mental health issues head
on.
Adrian Lewis, director of Activ Absence
– a software company that provides human
resources tools to monitor staff attendance – says
there are several measures employers can take to
spot early warning signs, but that these are often
overlooked.
“Commonly, employers only become aware
of an issue when an employee is signed off sick
with anxiety or stress – this is too late. By then,
their performance, confidence and productivity
is likely to have been affected.”
Mr Lewis says it does not have to be this way,
and explained how employers can better engage
with staff.
“We would like to see companies encouraging
greater openness about mental health so
sufferers don’t feel isolated, stigmatised or
scared they will lose their jobs if they admit to
having problems. It’s important to send a clear
message that workers who are suffering from
stress or depression will receive support and not
judgement.
“With open and regular communications
about mental health issues, good tracking and
monitoring of absence data to keep on top of
issues, and by proactively signposting support
services such as counselling, companies can
take big strides towards improving the mental
wellbeing of their workforce.”
THE cost of locating 100 staff in London
is 25% cheaper than doing so in New York,
according to a study into the future viability
of the world’s leading cities.
Commercial property consultancy Knight
Frank has compared the total cost of setting up
shop in the world’s leading cities based on the
price of workspace and average salaries.
Knight Frank estimates that employing 100
staff in conventional office space in the Capital
costs companies on average $5.23million
(£3.96m) per year, significantly less than rival
financial centres New York ($6.94m) and Hong
Kong ($5.96m).
Despite being one of the world’s pre-eminent
business locations, London is ranked only sixth
on the list overall.
Occupancy
The list is topped by Zurich where high salary
costs in the banking and asset management
sectors mean companies would pay $7.95m to
locate 100 staff in the city per year.
Zurich is followed by New York, and then San
Francisco ($6.69m), where the cost of employing
a highly-skilled tech workforce drives up total
occupancy costs.
The top five is completed by Hong Kong,
where office rents are the highest in the world,
and Boston ($5.93m).
While London offers a considerable discount
to other leading global cities, it remains one of
Europe’s most expensive business locations.
Companies locating 100 staff in Paris would
accrue an annual cost of ($4.1m), slightly ahead
of Dublin (just over $4m), while equivalent
costs for Stockholm, Frankfurt and Amsterdam
would be less than $4m per year.
Warsaw, meanwhile, is emerging as an
attractive European business location offering
a well-educated, multi-lingual labour force at
relatively low cost ($1.63.).
Lee Elliott, head of commercial research at
Knight Frank, said: “Access to high-skilled
talent is a well-established determinant of
corporate real estate and location decisionmaking.
But in a low-growth economic
environment where margin protection and
cost control is paramount, the cost of both
employing and accommodating this talent is
becoming important too.
“London is one of the top three business
locations in the world, yet it ranks only sixth on
the list of costs. This provides a clear incentive
CITYMATTERS.LONDON
BUSINESSES GET BANG FOR THEIR BUCK IN LONDON
report card:
London ranks only sixth
for businesses costs
Low Capital cost
for global companies to choose London,
particularly those in the tech and financial
services sector which need to attract and retain
the best people in state of the art workspace.
“Rival European cities do offer lower
employment and property costs, but many
global companies will see this as a false economy.
“As it stands, other European cities cannot
match London’s high-skilled human capital,
and its longstanding pre-eminence as a global
business centre.”
