THE first Open Iftar
was held in Cheapside
on Saturday 8 April,
organised by charity The
Ramadan Tent Project.
The event was proudly
supported by Cheapside Business
Alliance, the business improvement
district for the area.
More than 220 people attended
the event at One New Change to
break their fast together, in front
of the iconic backdrop of St Paul’s
Cathedral.
During the month of Ramadan,
which ended on 21 April, Muslims do
not eat or drink during the hours of
daylight as they devote themselves to
their faith.
The Open Iftar is the UK’s largest
community event in Ramadan and
aims to bring the public together for
a free iftar – the name of the evening
meal Muslims break their fast with –
to connect with each other and learn
more about the Islamic faith.
The event held in the City of
London was one of 10 chosen cities
across the UK, to celebrate the
project’s 10-year anniversary.
Emily Sherley-Dale, BID Manager
at Cheapside Business Alliance,
said: “We are delighted to have
supported, with the first Open Iftar
event in Cheapside. This event
gives the opportunity for members
of the public from all faiths and
backgrounds to come together to
break their fast and connect with
each other. This event was a special
moment for Cheapside’s history, and
we hope to facilitate it again next
year.
“As the business improvement
district for the area we work to celebrate
the wonderful diversity within
the City of London and create an
inclusive and vibrant destination.”
Omar Salha, Founder and CEO of
Ramadan Tent Project said: “For the
past decade, Ramadan Tent Project
has connected and convened over
half a million people from all backgrounds
through its annual Ramadan
Festival and flagship initiative Open
Iftar. It is with great pride and joy to
celebrate our 10-year anniversary
with the return of our renowned
Open Iftar events at some of the UK’s
landmark venues.
“Open Iftar first started on
university grounds inviting people
of all faiths and none to share the
breaking of fast, to build bridges
and increase awareness about the
month of Ramadan. To celebrate this
work and our 10-year journey, the
theme of ‘Belonging’ quintessentially
culminates everything Ramadan Tent
Project represents. True belonging
should not require you to change
who you are – rather, it is to celebrate
who you are.
“We are delighted to showcase
that Ramadan is open to all, and that
our Ramadan Festival and Open Iftar
events is home to a community of
communities.”
NEWS
Pop-up padel courts swing
into Tower Hill for summer
PADEL has been causing a racquet all over
the world, and now the popular sport is
being served up in the City of London.
A business network comprising the
Central London Alliance, Aldgate Connect,
EC BID and Blue Orchid Hospitality has
thrown up some pop-up courts in Tower
Hill, meaning you and your friends can get
in a few rallies after work.
And they come with a big billing, having
been installed by Game4Padel, the
sporting organisation backed by tennis ace
Andy Murray.
The courts are in place until 14 July,
giving players plenty of time to swing in for
a set or two of the world’s fastest growing
sport.
The courts are available for hire seven
days a week to local schools, businesses,
and members of the public.
Chair of the City of London Corporation’s
Culture, Heritage and Libraries Committee,
Wendy Hyde, said: “Padel tennis is a sport
that is fantastic fun for all the family and
growing in popularity. It’s great to welcome
it to the City and we just know it will
become a must-visit event.”
Ruth Duston OBE,
OC, MD of Primera
said: “The launch of the
Padel Tennis Festival is
our latest investment to
keep the momentum
going and continue to
develop an inspiring
and vibrant destination,
for City workers, residents
and visitors alike.
“The City has a long
history of pioneering
new initiatives so
bringing Padel to the
Square Mile is following
this tradition. We’re
excited to welcome a
whole new audience to
the Square Mile.”
Tony Matharu, Founder and Chairman of
Central London Alliance and Blue Orchid
Hospitality said the inaugural festival added
vibrancy to the City’s leisure offerings.
Matharu said: “The Central London
THE Fleet Street Quarter BID has confirmed
a GDV investment of up to £5 billion is set to
be injected into the area by 2028.
The business improvement district, which
represents some 359 businesses across a
43 hectare footprint of the western part of
the City, stated that a pipeline of 34 new
and refurbished schemes is in the works,
covering commercial office space, retail
and leisure projects.
Bosses say City workers and residents can
expect ‘radical transformation’ in the area.
In a report titled ‘The Future is Fleet Street
Quarter’, the BID outlines plans that include:
•The 539,000 sq ft of net office redevelopment
of the former Daily Express buildings
at River Court, 120 Fleet Street.
•A new 525,000 sq ft ‘Justice Quarter’ at
Pop-up padel courts
Alliance continues its work to encourage a
recovery and to stimulate visits to central
London, highlighting the reasons for
returning to the workplace that are not just
about ‘the desk’ – its renowned sporting
events, unmatched heritage, arts,
culture and other offerings.
“I’m pleased that the BIDs, partners
and supporters of the Central London
Alliance have come together to join us in
this activation; encouraging the public
to revisit the City of London, increasing
dwell time and assisting with London’s
economic recovery, whilst developing
an inspiring and vibrant destination and
raising urban attractiveness. Launching
our Padel Tennis Festival is just the start.
“Padel, like all sports, has the power
to unite, overcome barriers and
encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.
“We hope our padel court will be a place
where workers and visitors are a part of
London’s newest pioneering spirit, have fun
in the city, and build lasting relationships
throughout this summer and beyond.”
Fleet Street Quarter BID outlines £5bn investment
Salisbury Square being delivered by the City
of London Corporation.
•The 292,000 sq ft redevelopment of the
former Goldman Sachs HQ at Peterborough
Court, 133 Fleet Street.
Lady Lucy French OBE, Chief Executive
of the Fleet Street Quarter BID, said: “This
part of London has been reinventing itself
for 2,000 years. We, the people that work,
live, play and invest here, are the custodians
of its past and the curators of its future.
“This is a golden opportunity, a landmark
moment. We are seeing the evolution of
an area; an emerging, sustainable, inclusive
hub for today and tomorrow.
“This is a remarkable renaissance; the
reinvention and repositioning of the Fleet
Street Quarter.”
Deputy Shravan Joshi MBE, Planning
and Transportation Chairman, City of
London Corporation, described the regeneration
project as a “once-in-a-generation
opportunity”.
Shravan said: “The Fleet Street Quarter is
one of the few places left in London where
you can really redevelop and reinvigorate a
postcode.
“One of the things I am very mindful of is
we don’t want to just build for today; we’ve
got to be planning for tomorrow.”
There are four other BIDs located in
the Square Mile – The Culture Mile BID,
Cheapside Business Alliance, EC BID, and
Aldgate Connect BID, – and in total there
are more than 70 BIDs in operation across
the capital.
The City pulled out
all the stops, now it’s
time to look forward
AS the world watched the Coronation of
Their Majesties The King and Queen at
Westminster Abbey, the City came out to
celebrate, writes Chris Hayward, City of
London Corporation Policy Chairman.
Union flags flew across iconic Square Mile
sites, and Tower Bridge, London Bridge, the
Mansion House, and Guildhall – the City of
London Corporation’s headquarters – were
specially lit in red, white, and blue.
Residents held street parties, and our
Business Improvement Districts ran a BIG
Picnic in the Fleet Street Quarter, a traditional
cockney knees-up at Leadenhall Market, and
a Big Coronation Lunch at Aldgate Square.
And there were celebrations across the
City Corporation’s open spaces, including
a party honouring volunteers at Burnham
Beeches, and a community festival at
Hampstead Heath. The City has always
been a loyal supporter of the Monarchy, and
our residents, workers, and visitors came
together to celebrate in style, supporting our
Destination City vision of the Square Mile as
a seven-day-a-week leisure destination.
This was a vitally important moment for
the nation, and I am proud that the City of
London Corporation played a valuable role.
Lord Mayor Nicholas Lyons followed in the
footsteps of his predecessors by walking in
the Coronation procession at Westminster
Abbey. Lord Mayors have represented the
City in Coronations of new monarchs since
at least the 14th century.
And I was delighted that the City
Corporation, in partnership with participating
Livery Companies – the City’s ancient trade
guilds – gifted the bespoke fabric ‘anointing
screen’, which enshrouded King Charles
III as he was anointed in holy oil by the
Archbishop of Canterbury.
The screen, which replaced the canopy
used in previous Coronations, was inspired
by a stained-glass window in the Chapel
Royal at St James’s Palace installed for Her
Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden
Jubilee. It features a striking central design
of a Commonwealth Tree, depicting the 56
Commonwealth countries as leaves.
Our inclusion in this most special of
events reflects the Square Mile’s continued
importance in the life of the nation.
Today, the City drives the national
economy, generating over £85bn in
economic output annually, and over £1.1bn
in business rates. There are 587,000 workers
here in the Square Mile – home to one of the
youngest, most highly skilled, diverse, and
international workforces across the country.
The Coronation marks the beginning of a
new era for the UK and the Commonwealth.
And it is clear to me that the monarchy
underpins the attractiveness of London and
the UK as a place in which to live, work, and
visit.
Through the ages, the Royal Family has
provided political stability at home, and soft
power overseas. They reinforce our national
values of the independence of the judiciary,
and respect for the rule of law, which
make the UK such an attractive place to do
business.
King Charles III now occupies a role he’s
been working towards his entire life. And
I know that under his leadership, the City
and the Crown will remain as close as ever,
reflecting our ancient partnership, for the
benefit of the whole UK.

ENTERTAINMENT
Puttshack
Where Swingers is a 1920’s themed crazy
golf bar, Puttshack is all about the future.
They throw all the technology they can
into this golfing experience located right
by Bank Junction. The whole space is
designed to feel like an amusement park.
Bright colourful lights fill all the rooms.
Dinging noises and music bounce off all
the walls. It’s a sensory overload. But in all
the best ways. You feel fully immersed in
this world of party golf.
Not only do the Puttshack courses create
a unique vibe, but unlike any other crazy
golf course, they offer a different interactive
game at every hole. That means you
can be working on your Beer Pong skills at
one hole and then test out your pop culture
knowledge at their True or False hole. You
can’t find this anywhere else.
There’s no need for paper score cards
here – that means there’s no room for
cheating. Before you play a round (and
drink a round), each ball is sanitised and
dispensed with your game profile automatically
linked to that ball. It tracks your hits
and lets you know who is truly winning.
That means there’s more brain power left
for hanging out with mates and having fun.
Otherworld
We are still obsessed with Otherworld, one
of the best games bars in the City of London.
This virtual reality bar and arcade in East
London is one of the best alternative places
to have a Christmas party. Book out the
entire space or just a few of their big white
immersion pods and escape the world as
you know it. They have created an entirely
virtual world for people to explore as teams
or by themselves while linking people to
different third party games too.
Fight off zombies with colleagues, swing
through the forest vines as wind blows in
your face or simply play the job satisfaction
game (if you haven’t had any of that this
year). It a whole heap of silly fun. And it is a
totally unforgettable experience. They even
have their own well stocked bar and small
kitchen so all your food and drink needs are
taken care of too.
Platform
Do you really miss playing Mario Party, but
don’t want to buy an old Nintendo 64 just for
the occasional fun? Or maybe you desperately
want to play the original PlayStation
Need for Speed. Well, the fine folks down
at Platform have created the perfect place
to indulge in these nostalgic games, all the
while feasting on pizza and getting around
plenty of pints of beer.
Book a table for 2-6 people and go wild on
the multiplayer games on offer. They even
have a special esports section in the back.
The fully kitted out space is your stage to
achieve the impossible. Complete death-defying
raids, secure nail-biting clutch wins and
hold your nerve as the last player standing.
These guys are passionate about bringing
indie games and esports to a wider audience
and can support rookies with advice. You
don’t need to be a pro to play here. It’s all
just meant to be a whole lot of silly fun.
2B Worship Street EC2A 2AH
CHAOS KARTS
Now these guys aren’t strictly opening until
August, but we can tell that this is gonna be
one of the best gaming bars in London once
it opens.
Think of it as Mario Kart in real life. Drive
around a racecourse, kitted out with all the
best augmented reality tech.
CHAOS KARTS throws players into this
hectic virtual world, living inside a real-life
Platform
video game to race / battle their friends,
family, rivals, colleagues and more. The karts
will be equipped with features to produce
real life sensations and reactions that will
immerse competitors fully into the ride of
their life.
The experience comes complete with
varying circuit designs, pumping music and
most importantly, usable in-kart power-ups
and weapons that will allow players to ‘battle’
right up to the finishing line. The future of
gaming is here folks. Well and truly.
fine-dining restaurant and café in our
very own City of London.
While the restaurant offers a plethora of
we want to draw your attention to CORD’s
Floozie
Did someone say deep dish cookies? Heck,
yes! Floozie, however, offers deep dish
cookies that are beyond what your mind
is likely imagining… They’re thick, chunky,
chewy on the inside and perfectly crispy on
the outside, and stuffed to the brimmed with
excitingly decadent fillings.
Located just outside the City in bustling
Covent Garden, Floozie is the ideal base for
a dessert café of such stature. Head there on
your lunch break for a much-needed sweet
pick-me-up, or after a bout of weekend
shopping.
Along with an assortment of statement
flavours – like Pecan Pie, Chocolate Chunk,
and Peanut Butter and Jam – Floozie runs
a ‘special’ cookie that changes month-tomonth,
and usually reflects the season in
some way (think, pumpkin spiced cookies in
October!).
At time of writing, the monthly special is
Banana Cream Pie – banana cookie dough
with a banana cream centre, topped with
banana chips and crumble. Try it, before it’s
gone.
MOTORING
HISTORICAL UPGRADE
DISCOVER THE COMPREHENSIVE EVOLUTION OF THE NEW CAYENNE
PORSCHE may be well versed
in taking corners, but the
marque hasn’t cut any in
this upgrade to its Cayenne
range.
Billed as “one of the most
extensive product upgrades in the
history of Porsche”, drivers can expect to
experience a whole new drive thanks to
comprehensive changes to the powertrain,
chassis, design and cabin equipment.
The raft of improvements has further
extended not only on-road and off-road
performance, but also luxurious everyday
comfort – a big tick in an important box
for those navigating the City streets.
The new Cayenne debuts with a highly
digitalised display and control concept,
new chassis technology and innovative
high-tech features.
High-definition HD Matrix LED headlights
provide road illumination tailored to every
driving situation, an air quality system
filters pollutants from the air in the interior,
and, for the first time in the Cayenne, front
passengers have their own infotainment
display – for streaming videos during
the trip, for example. With its extensively
upgraded design and more powerful
engine range, the Cayenne emphasises its
claim to be the sportiest car in its segment.
But what about the driver experience?
Well, Porsche has integrated a completely
revised display and control concept into
the new Cayenne.
The new Porsche Driver Experience,
first introduced in the Porsche Taycan,
focuses on the driver’s axis and optimises
operation. Functions that the driver uses
frequently are located directly on or
immediately next to the steering wheel.
For example, the lever located on the
left behind the steering wheel now has
additional functions for operating the
driver assistance systems. The automatic
transmission selector lever in the new
Cayenne is now on the dashboard. This
makes room on the new centre console
for storage compartments and a large air
conditioning controller in an elegant black
panel design.
Large, easily accessible controls
The new Porsche Cayenne
combined with mechanical air
conditioning switches and a haptic volume
controller ensure optimum operability and
a refined look. A key feature of the new
Porsche Driver Experience is the balance
between digital and analogue elements.
Under the vehicle the advances
continue. Porsche now equips the
Cayenne at the factory with a steel spring
suspension including Porsche Active
Suspension Management (PASM).
New shock absorbers with 2-valve
technology, and thus separate rebound
and compression stages, allow optimised
performance in all driving situations.
In particular, comfort at slow speeds
(handy when staring at brake lights on
busier commutes), handling during
dynamic cornering, and pitch and roll
support have been noticeably improved.
The driving experience can be
additionally enhanced with the new
adaptive air suspension with 2-chamber,
2-valve technology. This improves the
driving experience with a soft suspension
characteristic, stabilises the vehicle and
simplifies on-road and off-road handling –
compared to both the standard suspension
and the predecessor model.
At the same time, the adaptive air
suspension improves driving precision
and performance, and reduces body
movements in dynamic driving situations.
The suspension also offers an even sharper
differentiation between Normal, Sport and
Sport Plus driving modes.
The aesthetics speak for themselves.
A new front end combined with more
strongly arched wings, a new bonnet
and technically appealing headlights
emphasises the vehicle’s width.
Three-dimensionally designed tail lights,
uncluttered surfaces beneath and a new
rear apron with integrated number plate
holder characterise the rear end design.
Meanwhile, an expanded colour palette
with three new colours, lightweight sports
packages saving up to 33 kilograms for
the Cayenne Coupé, and a new extensive
range of 20, 21, and 22-inch wheels make
it possible to individually and dynamically
configure your new ride. Meaning drivers
can take their corners however they feel.
