FROM THE FASHION POINT OF VIEW, it is instructive to know what is actually selling—what consumers
are buying—as opposed to what styles are being pushed. At the peak of this spring golf season,
here is a snapshot of what is happening on John Daly´s colourful world.
Golfer LCG features
YOU, TOO, CAN LOOK LIKE JOHN DALY
John Daly made his own special kind of style
statement at the Open de Espana in Girona,
Spain, this week, appearing in the pro-am segment
wearing lurid, superloud raspberry-andyellow
checked trousers. Daly, who tends to stand
out in any circumstances, could be seen a mile
away.
His electric argyle pants came from the aptly
named LoudMouth Golf company, which specializes
in old-fashioned, in-your-face golfing pants
of merrily questionable taste: Hawaiian prints;
“shagadelic” patterns; disco-ball designs; pink
and green awning stripes; and Daly’s raspberry
argyles, which go for $89.95. The company’s chief
executive, Larry Jackson, said in a statement yesterday,
“We’re not your ordinary golf pants,” said
Jackson. “But then, who wants to be ordinary?”
The company’s philosophy is “pants that go
from fairway to party.” Its founder, Scott “Woody”
Woodworth, is a graduate of Brown University and
the Rhode Island School of Design who got fed up
with the sedate state of contemporary golf style.
With a name like that, he can’t be all bad.

WHY A GOLFING
HOLIDAY IN THE
COSTA BLANCA?
THE AVERAGE winter rainfall
in the Costa Blanca is less
than in the other regions of
Spain that is why many golfers
are making it their winter
golf holiday destination.
The landscape offers a spectacular
panorama with craggy
mountains in the background,
gleaming blue sea and the
luminous sand of some of the
most beautiful beaches in the
mediterranean.
Costa Blanca
Golfing & Le
THE COSTA BLANCA is ideal
for golfers and their families
looking to explore mountains,
historic cities, nature reserves
and wonderful beaches
as well as play a round of
two. Whether you are looking
for competitions and tournaments
or a relaxed golfing
holiday with friends, the
Costa Blanca has so much to
offer. This is a perfect place
for long golf holidays and also
for short golfing breaks. More
and more holidaying golfers
are discovering the pleasure
of a golfing holiday in the
Costa Blanca.
Increasing numbers of British
golfers are discovering the
delights of a golfing holiday
in the Costa Blanca region of
Spain
The Costa Blanca runs from Valencia
in the north to Torrevieja in the
south and is a region renowned for
its wonderful mild winter climate
- one of the healthiest on earth,
according to the ‘World Health Organisation’.
The scenery is quite spectacular,
with rugged mountain backdrops,
sparkling blue sea and the golden
sand of some of the most beautiful
beaches in Europe. When it
comes to nightlife and dining out
there is something for everyone
in this region. Whether staying in
the cosmopolitan cities of Valencia
and Alicante, or the vibrant
tourist resorts of Denia, Torrevieja
and Benidorm, you will find
an abundant choice of excellent
restaurants and atmospheric bars.
The average winter rainfall in the
Costa Blanca is actually less than
any other area of Spain, including
the Costa del Sol, which is
why more and more golfers are
making this their winter golfing
destination. There are many first
class courses to choose from, all
less crowded than their counterparts
in the Costa del Sol or the

In the north near Valencia, El Saler
was host to the 2001 Spanish
Open and is rated one of the top
five courses in Europe. Also in this
area, El Bosque is rated number 5
in Spain.
Near Denia, we have Oliva Nova,
considered by many to be Seve’s
best design, and La Sella, another
fine course. The Alicante area
has 4 excellent courses in Bonalba,
Alenda, Alicante North and
El Plantio. Further south, the resort
of Torrevieja is within easy
reach of the courses of Villamartin,
Campoamor, Las Ramblas and
PGA TOUR TRYING TO
PROTECT ITS TIGER
BUBBLE.
Tiger Woods is the most important
player to the game of golf
in terms of the bottom line. As
far as professional golf is concerned,
Woods cannot come
back fast enough. The PGA
Tour is at a critical juncture.
Next year it will begin negotiating
new TV contracts with CBS
and NBC. In the meantime, the
tour is trying to secure sponsors
for 10 events in 2011 while
economic conditions are not
exactly favorable. Two of the
hardest-hit industries, financial
services and car manufacturing,
are responsible for underwriting
a third of the PGA Tour’s
sponsored events.
Tiger - and
his troubled
times!
THERE ARE STILL a few people and companies standing in support
of Tiger Woods. The sponsors of his foundation haven’t
jumped ship, even as some such as AT&T and Accenture have
severed ties with Woods himself. And if the foundation folks
hired by Tiger thought his transgressions embarrassing, they’re
not letting on. As if reading from the same talking points, they
profess to be so consumed by their work -- most specifically
the daily operation of the Tiger Woods Learning Center here in
Southern California -- that they pay no mind to the salacious
accounts of his female conquests, or even the question of when
he’ll resurface on the PGA Tour. They say the busloads of students
still show up daily, and the lone concern voiced by parents
is whether the educational programs and scholarships might go
away.
Tiger Woods shot a sloppy
first-round 74 at Quail Hollow,
but a far more damming
number surfaced
recently: 121. That’s how many
women Woods allegedly confessed
to bedding while married
to Elin Nordegren, a source told
the National Enquirer. (Move
over, Ladies of Tiger Woods Wall
Calendar -- here come the Ladies
of Tiger Woods Playing Cards!)
The complete story is in the print
edition only, but the NY Daily
News has the dish:
Woods handed a four-page list of
conquests to his wife while undergoing
sex-addiction therapy at a
Mississippi clinic.
At the time, Woods was trying to
prevent Nordegren from walking
out on him—and taking their two
kids and a big chunk of his fortune
with her. Divorce, according to the
story (and many others), is imminent,
which would be just about the
only predictable turn in this sad and
sordid saga.
To add to Wood´s problems, a
15-foot birdie putt Phil Mickel-
LCGFeatures
Is Woods’s return bad for the
PGA Tour?
son made on the final hole at
Quail Hollow meant more than
just a second-place finish. It
put him in position to become
No. 1 in the world.
Mickelson could reach the top for
the first time in his career by winning
The Players Championship, provided
Tiger Woods finishes out of
the top five. The Masters champion
has never been No. 1 in the
world ranking.
Woods has been No. 1 in the
world for the last five years. He
missed the cut last week for only
the sixth time in his career, and
Mickelson earned enough points
for being second place alone allowed
him to close the gap.
Tiger Woods is golf’s moneymaker.
The PGA Tour, CBS, Augusta National,
everyone associated with the Masters
is breathing a huge sigh of relief that
Woods is returning for the year’s first
major. But Woods’s return may be the
worst possible thing for the PGA Tour
in the long run. Certainly, hundreds of
golfers can thank Tiger for driving up
purses and making sure that even the
relatively mediocre are living quite
comfortably. But Woods’s dominance
is a clear sign of the superstar effect
which causes opponents to concede,
rather than rise to the occasion when
competing against him. Golf’s finest
era had Jack Nicklaus and Arnold
Palmer duking it out on the course
(not literally, of course). Tiger is so
dominant that he has eliminated the
critical aspect of sports: competition.
THE WRIST MOVEMENT WITHIN THE SWING...
TOM
McCowan
Alicante Golf Professional
The following exercise; Practising the body turn
from your golf posture and set-up, also demonstrates
the position of the wrists during the
swing. At the same time this helps you to appreciate
the swing-plane angle on both sides of the
swing.
When the maximum backward turn has been made,
remove your upper hand, turn the wrist round
through 180º, bend your elbow and place your hand
on the shaft just above the lower hand, if the grip
was correctly formed this would be the position of
the wrists.
The forward turn and the position of the wrists.
When your wrists are lifted in the backswing and
then brought back into their original position at the
moment of impact, the body continues turning round
forwards on the same angles and your wrists are
lifted up on the same angle as they were lifted on the
backward swing. This movement of the wrists creates
a whiplash effect which produces the clubhead speed.
The wrists are lifted on the same angle and plane,
backwards and forwards.
The backward turn and the position of the wrists.
This exercise is repeated with the forward turn.
The only difference is that the upper hand is placed
below the lower hand. The wrists control the angle of
the club on the swing plane backwards and forwards.
The wrists lifted on the same angle and radius
backwards and forwards.
When the wrists are lifted on the same angle backwards
and forwards, this is known as the swing plane
angle.
aying lessons, call Tom on 670304253.
LCG Tips
The function of the wrists...
As we know from putting and chipping, the clubhead is
controlled in a short swing by moving only your shoulders to
move the club backwards to forwards.
To make a longer swing, it is necessary to combine the
lifting movement of the wrists with the turning of the body.
This is often referred to as, ‘breaking your wrists’ and should
be applied on both the backswing and the forward swing
(sounds very painful), I prefer to describe it as the ‘lifting of
the wrists’.
The wrists lift the club keeping the clubhead on the correct
swing plane angle, without the clubface deviating from its
position, when the grip is neutral.
The distance moved by the clubhead in the swing is increased
by lifting the wrists during the swing, at the same
time produces the acceleration and impulse to the clubhead.
This increased speed in the clubhead produces more spin
effect in the ball.
Lifting the clubhead up and down using the
wrists.
When practising this exercise you should be able to feel the
wrists moving easily as you lift the clubhead up and down.
The movement of the clubhead can be made more positively
downwards to strike the ground, thus showing the impulse
that can be transmitted into the ball in the forward swing.
Lifting (breaking) the wrists up.
The correct grip pressure can be felt in your hands and
fingers when you lift your wrists up. If you are squeezing too
tightly on the handle you will be unable to lift the clubhead
easily. The handle should be held firmly in the fingers but at
the same time lightly in the hands.Set up correctly to the ball
with the clubface square to the target line and your hands
formed in a neutral grip, then lift the clubhead using only
your wrists.
Advertising
The clubface stays square when the wrists are
lifted
You will see and feel there is no change in the position
of the grooves from the square to the target position.

THE SUN AND
YOUR SKIN
Torrential downpours and lingering black clouds
have left many of us wondering when summer will
finally arrive. We all love sunshine, indeed most of
us will cite the weather as one of the main reasons
for packing up our homes and moving to Spain.
In contrast with many of life’s other pleasures, the good
news is that sunshine can be good for you. It plays a role in
the production of vitamin D, it is good for our psychological
well being and scientists have now discovered that it can
actually prevent certain forms of cancer. …….Yes, there
is a ‘but’ coming!
Apart from causing wrinkles, allergic rashes, unsightly
areas of pigmentation, damage to the immune system
and cataracts, the sun can kill you.
Rates of skin cancer are increasing all the time. In the
UK alone, where, as we are all know , there is not a lot of
sunshine, there are some 50,000 new cases each year.
Living in Spain, we have to be extra careful when it comes
to sun safety. Anybody can develop skin cancer, however
you are more at risk if you have:
Pale skin | Blonde, red or light brown hair | Been treated
for skin cancer | A family member who’s had skin cancer.
There are several different types of skin cancers, the
most dangerous being malignant melanoma. It is very
important to be aware of changes to moles that could
indicate a possible malignancy. Look out for:-
ASYMMETRY: one half of the abnormal skin area is
different than the other half.
BORDERS: irregular borders.
COLOUR: varies from one area to another with shades of
tan, brown, or black (sometimes white, red, blue).
DIAMETER: usually (but not always) larger than 6 mm in
size (diameter of a pencil eraser).
Any skin growth that bleeds or will not heal
There are steps that we can take to prevent skin cancer
which include staying out of the sun when it is most
intense, between 10am and 4pm. If you are unable to stay
out of the sun during these times make sure that you are
covered up. Men are more at risk of developing skin cancers
on the scalp and ears due to lack of hair so, ladies, try to
inspect your men regularly! Also, some medications can
make your skin more sensitive to the sun so check with
your Farmacia. Apart from avoiding sun exposure, our best
weapon against this disease is sunscreen but it has to be
used properly. Also remember that sunburn in children can
lead to skin cancer in later life.
TIPS FOR APPLYING SUNSCREEN
.Always use SPF 15 or higher with UVA and UVB
protection.
.Do not use after expiry date.
.Apply the recommended amount evenly to all uncovered
skin, especially your lips, nose, ears, neck, hands, and feet.
.Check the label for the correct amount of time to apply it
before you go out.
.If the label doesn’t give a time, allow about 15 to 30
minutes.
.If you don’t have much hair, apply sunscreen to the top of
your head, or wear a hat. Reapply often, read the label to
see how often.
.Give babies and children extra care in the sun. Ask a doctor
before applying sunscreen to children under 6 months old.
.Apply sunscreen to children older than 6 months every
time they go out.
.Always re-apply after swimming.
.Even during winter months, and cloudy days the sun can
still cause damage, so be aware. Sunscreen is not just for
the summer. Everybody likes to get out and enjoy the sun
and we all feel better when we have a bit of a golden glow,
so, if summer ever arrives have fun in the sun but do so
responsibly.

GOOD HEALTH
Try the exciting Restylane® at Karina´s Therapy and
Beauty Centre, Torrevieja, a leading brand within its
category in the global beauty market. The product is
based on Q-Med’s patented NASHA technology and
improves people’s natural looks by adding and restoring
volume to the skin. Restylane is used amongst other
things to smooth out lines and wrinkles, to create
fuller lips and clearer facial contours, and for rejuvenation
of the skin.
Restylane - for revitalized looks
Restylane is a leading brand in its category in the global
beauty market. Restylane smooths out lines, fills out
wrinkles and creates volume in the face, for example
fuller lips or clearer facial contours. More than ten million
treatments have been successfully carried out in
more than 70 countries since its introduction in 1996.
The brand comprises six products, which in different
ways improve and enhance people’s natural looks by
adding and restoring volume to the skin.
The products are based on Q-Med’s patented technology
NASHA and give a natural, visible and lasting
result. The treatment, which is carried out by certified
practitioners such as dermatologists, is simple
and takes about 30 minutes. The product is injected in
small quantities into the skin using a very fine needle.
The effect lasts for up to one year, depending on the individual
skin structure and what area has been treated.
Restylane consists of hyaluronic acid, a substance that
occurs naturally in the body and this therefore means
that side-effects are rare. The degradation process in
the body is natural and the risk of reactions is small.
Comprehensive clinical studies confirm the product’s
properties and show that is proven to be safe.
What is Restylane
Restylane® is an injectable gel which should always
administered by a trained, medically qualified practitioner.
Restylane enhances your natural looks by restoring
your skin’s volume, creating softness and revitalizing
your appearance.
How it works
Youthful skin is rich in hyaluronic acid. As we age, the
distribution and function of hyaluronic acid in our skin
gradually change, leading to the characteristic signs of
aging.
Restylane® gels work by enhancing your skin’s own
stocks of hyaluronic acid, directly adding volume to
either soften the signs of aging or enhance your features.
The procedure is quick. It usually takes less than
30 minutes. The benefits can be seen immediately.
Why Restylane?
Millions of people have used Restylane with confidence.
It is the world’s most widely used product based on
hyaluronic acid for esthetic enhancement.
BEFORE
Restylane is safe
Restylane® safety and efficacy is proven beyond a doubt,
with robust clinical data spanning a decade. Adverse reactions
to Restylane are rare.
Restylane is natural
The uniquely produced hyaluronic acid gel of Restylane
closely resembles natural hyaluronic acid. This reduces the
risk of an inflammatory reaction or other side effects.
Restylane is long lasting but not permanent
Restylane® gives you flexibility and control over your
looks. Because your face changes shape as you age, you
want to avoid a permanent look you might regret in years
to come.
Restylane is nonanimal
In contrast to some other hyaluronic acid-based products,
the hyaluronic acid in Restylane is not extracted from animals.
This means there is no risk of transmitting disease or
eliciting allergic reactions if you are sensitive to common
foods, such as chicken and eggs.
Restylane is quick and easy
Restylane® treatment usually fits in well with busy lifestyles,
with minimal downtime, and gives results that can
be seen instantly.
Patented technology
If you injected hyaluronic acid in its natural form into the
body, it would break down in just a few days, and any
treatment benefit would be very short-lived. The unique
stabilization process patented by Q-Med and used in the
manufacture of Restylane results in a hyaluronic acid gel
that closely resembles the body’s own hyaluronic acid.
This provides long-lasting treatment benefits and minimizes
the risk of a skin reaction.
GOOD HEALTH
Overcome
Insomnia
Insomnia affects over 40 percent of adults world wide on a
frequent basis. However some experts estimate that almost
all of the adult population have suffered from it some time
in their life.
People who suffer from insomnia often find it difficult to lead
a normal life, and may have some of the following symptoms;
.FEELING DEPRESSED, IRRITABLE OR ANGRY.
.WAKING FAR TOO EARLY AND THEN BEING UNABLE TO GET
BACK TO SLEEP.
.FEELING TIRED AND NOT REFRESHED ON WAKING.
.TROUBLE THINKING CLEARLY OR STAYING FOCUSED,
MAKING IT HARD TO CONCENTRATE DURING THE DAY.
.HEADACHES.
Some of the common causes of insomnia include a change
in lifestyle such as separation or divorce, a hormonal change
of the body, mental conditions such as depression or anxiety
disorders, and increased external stress, eg, work related or
the credit crunch causing financial difficulties. Some medications
have been linked to the development of insomnia, but usually
the condition may disappear once the person has stopped taking
the medications. Insomnia can also occur as a result of frequent
night time disruptions, such as the crying of a baby, dogs
barking, nightmares that wake the person, or even the need to
go to the loo in the middle of the night. One of the most common
reasons that I experienced over the 24 years that I have been
in practice in my Northern Ireland clinics was (and still is) the
husbands or wives of members of the security forces, worried
about them being on duty at night. Or the women who came to
me for insomnia, who woke up one night with 4 gunmen standing
around her bed!
INSOMNIA CAUSED BY EARLY PROGRAMMING
BY PARENTS
Many people have been taught a little bedtime prayer
that goes like this;
“As I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
And If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.”
What the parents (unknowingly) are telling the child
is that if they go to sleep they might die, and this
By Alan Gilchrist
Costa Blanca’s Top Hypnotherapist
is being repeated to them every night for years!.
This can give rise to the DON’T SLEEP- WON’T DIE syndrome.
The child is waking up every night to check if they are still alive!
In actual fact at the time of writing this article I have a young
boy of only 10 years of age coming to me with this very same
problem.
INSOMNIA IS ONE OF THE EASIEST CONDITIONS
TO TREAT WITH FAST TRACK HYPNOSIS.
With the use of Fast Track Hypnosis it can help to reeducate
the mind when it comes to sleep disorders.
Usually whenever a client plays my CD after their session they
will normally fall asleep while listening to it. So much so that I
have to inform them that it is perfectly OK and normal to do so!
It is always advisable that a person with chronic insomnia
that does not respond to standard treatment consult a doctor
before using Hypnosis, as there might be a more serious
cause behind their problem.
Over the years my waiting room walls have gathered
quite a lot of letters from past clients telling of
how my Fast Track Hypnosis has helped them.
Many people coming through my door for the first time will say
to me “ I bet you haven’t heard of my problem before”. Then I
would point them to a letter of someone with a similar problem.
HERE IS ONE ABOUT INSOMNIA
Dear Alan,
I have waited until now to write to you because I wanted to give
myself time to get properly into a sleep pattern again- after 6
years of not sleeping it took a bit of time! First of all thank you,
I have received the best Christmas present ever, a regular sleep
pattern! . Since I last saw you it has been brilliant, leaving me
much more sociable, confident, relaxed, but more importantly -
HAPPY. I only have the odd bad night but that’s nothing because
I know the next night I’ll sleep! . I hope everything is well with
you. What you do is very important and to know someone is
there who can help and understand means an awful lot. Regards
FINANCE with Gary Timmins
Financial Advice
A smart alternative
to Bank deposits
This month we look at a smart alternative to
Bank Deposit accounts.
One of the challenges facing UK expatriates is
the need for an investment solution, compliant in
their country of residence, and remaining compliant
should their country of residence change. In addition
many UK expatriates require the option to invest
in a fund guaranteeing a secure and consistent
return, whilst still allowing access to funds. To meet
these needs we have a plan to recommend that has
been developed specifically for UK expatriates.
Why are the Guaranteed Funds a suitable
alternative to a Bank Deposit account?
• Option to hold multi currencies in one product and
switch between these currencies.
• You may withdraw money at any time.
• A minimum guaranteed annual return is agreed
with the Luxembourg regulator (Commissariat aux
Assurances) and applies for each of the first eight
years of the investment.
• Around half of policyholders invested are pensioners
reliant on these returns for income.
• Luxembourg investor protection. Luxembourg, offers
unsurpassed and unlimited investor protection.
The investor protection regime in Luxembourg is
referred to as the “tripartite agreement”. Under the
“tripartite agreement” assets representing the lifeinsurance
contracts are deposited with approved
custodian banks. These assets are isolated from
the insurance company & custodian banks own assets.
The activities of the insurance company and
the custodian banks are closely monitored by the
Commissariat aux Assurances (the authority regulating
insurance companies governed by Luxembourg
law). This “ring-fencing” of client assets from
the insurance company provides clients with maximum
security. The Commissariat aux Assurances is
also empowered to protect assets on behalf of the
client. For example they have the authority to freeze
assets should they observe unauthorised activity.
Should you wish to invest in Sterling, a Sterling
Guaranteed Fund is also available; the historical
fund returns have been:
Not available 1995 +7.64% 1996 +7.50% 1997 +6.75%
1998 +6.75% 1999 +6.75% 2000 +6.00% 2001 +6.00%
2002 +5.75% 2003 +5.50% 2004 +5.24% 2005 +5.00%
2006 +5.50% 2007 +5.50% 2008 +4.75% 2009 +3.50%
Assuming then that investment returns can be improved
upon as detailed above; and tax deductions reduced by
using a Spanish or UK investment bond then the following
case studies demonstrate the tax efficiency of
taking an income in both Spain and the UK.
Case study 1 Spain
Mr. and Mrs. Jones invest €100,000 which grows by 7%
to €107,000. They decide to supplement their income
and take out €5,000 of their ‘profit’.
As only the capital gain is taxed in Spain, Mr. and Mrs.
Jones will pay only €62.15 in tax, a tax rate of just
1.24%!
This tax is deducted at source with nothing else to
pay.
Case study 2 UK
Mr. and Mrs. Smith invest £100,000 which grows by 7%
to £107,000. They decide to supplement their income
and take out £5,000 of their ‘profit’.
Via a UK bond it is possible to take 5% of the initial investment
as a ‘tax free income’ for 20 years.
No tax is deducted and the full 5% income is paid to
them.
The above Guaranteed Return funds are available in
conjunction with numerous other funds and asset classes;
some of which have been covered over the last few
months via this article.
A DREAM OF A SHOW FOR SPANGLES
Spangles and The Everlys played to a capacity crowd on
Friday, 9 April, when they presented their ‘Dream Show’ at
CISSMU in Los Narejos, Los Alcázares. This well-known Los
Alcázares ladies’ harmony chorus opened the show with their
usual energy, pizzazz and professionalism, completing their set
with an encore of a big audience favourite: ‘And All That Jazz’
from the hit musical ‘Chicago’.
Rick and Dan followed with their Everlys tribute, reminding the
audience of Everlys classics, such as ‘Wake Up Little Susie’,
‘Bye Bye Love’ and ‘Cathy’s Clown’, which were received with
rapturous applause. The show was one of many fundraising
events organised by Spangles to raise money to buy their new
Wenger risers from the UK, because the chorus has outgrown
the ones they currently use for performances. “We’re delighted
with the response from our fans and the general public and
we’d like to thank them for helping us to raise 1456 € tonight,
which has really boosted our riser fund.” said Musical Director,
Gail Grainger “I’d also like to thank Councillor Mari Carmen
Imbernón Saura and the CISSMU staff for providing the venue
and, of course, our front of house team for making sure that
everything ran so smoothly.”
THE MUSEUM
MARQ is an archaeology museum which is dedicated to displaying
its collection in a traditional way; as a collection of classified
and catalogued finds. MARQ is a project faced with the
challenge of being the first archaeological museum of the 21st
century.
A Journey through History
The development and formation of a people is influenced greatly
by its past, especially one that is shaped by the presence of
various ancient civilizations. It is therefore essential that this
past is made known and passed on to all those people who visit
MARQ.
As well as being a professional institution and an important educational
space, the new Provincial Archaeology Museum of Alicante
also provides a spectacular and entertaining experience.
The museum offers visitors the opportunity to find out about the
various methods and techniques that are associated with archaeology.
These are explained in three galleries dedicated to: Field
Archaeology, Urban Archaeology and Underwater Archaeology.
Various dioramas, audio-visual presentations and interactives
provide visitors with a detailed insight into the techniques that
archaeologists use to discover the past. These provide valuable
information which is displayed in an attractive and didactic way.
especially designed for
The Moors and Christians
Festival in Muro de Alcoy
THERE ARE MANY festivals celebrated in the town of Muro de
Alcoy, but one of them
stands out for its historical
significance: the
Moors and Christians
festival celebrated in
honour of Our Lady Virgen
de los Desamparados,
which can trace its
origins back to the year
1857.
Of these celebrations
in honour of the patron
saint, which kick off on
the 7th May and finish
up on the 10th of the
same month, take note
of the magnificent and
joyful processions that
parade to the rhythm of
paso doble and Moorish
marches.
Ciudad de la Luz
Since it opened its doors in August 2005, the Ciudad
de la Luz studios have been occupied and in continuous
use right up to the present day. As a result, the
audiovisual industrial complex promoted by the Generalitat
in Alicante has hosted the filming of a total of
twenty-six productions over this three-year period.
To date, the modern facilities at Ciudad de la Luz have
hosted all types of filming, from small format productions
to the largest budgets in European cinema, films
released both nationally and internationally and even
animation films, such as ‘Linko’, the first production
made in Spain using advanced, three-dimensional
technology.
The total cost of the twenty-six productions filmed at
Ciudad de la Luz to date amounts to 249 million euro,
which brings with it a direct investment of around 85
million euro into the region. These productions have
led to some 114,130 overnight stays in hotels across
the region over the last three years.
Other significant figures relate to the number of extras
sessions contracted - 39,203 in total, as well as the
1,543 people contracted by the production companies
in Alicante.
Tournedos Rossini
One of Italys
most famous
composers Giacchino
Rossini
born in 1792, not
only left behind
his tremendus
musical creations,
like The
Barber from Seville
or Willhelm
Tell, but also a
range of now classical
dishes.
Rossinis life was filled with music and food. He loved
good wine and eating at his favourite restaurants.
Where some of the chefs also became his best friends,
sharing their passions for music and food. One out of
these encounters a dishe was named after him, the
Tournedos Rossini. The dish consists of meat taken from
the tender loin, other ingredients are: foi gras, truffels,
demi glace, portwine and a slice of white bread.
How to cook it.
Seal the 200g tournedos in butter and oil, seasoning it. Let
it sit in the oven on 200c for about 4 minutes.
Cut ome charlotte onions and saute them with a little
truffel , add one tablespoon of portwine, and two tablespoons
of demi glace (reduced beef stock). Let it reduce
to thicken.
In a saucepan fry about 80g of fresh good or duck liver. Let
it rest on paper to absorb excessive fat.
A round shaped piece of white bread is placed in the centre
of the plate, followed by the medium rare tournedos on
top, placing the liver on top of the tournedos.
With a spoon pour the reduced beef stock around and over
the liver.
Roast potatoes go well with this dish, and so
does a fresh salad or vegetables.
The wine I recommend to drink this famous dish is
Rincon del Moro from Alicante. The Merlot grape goes well
with the flavour of port in the sauce and is fabulous with
the meat and the liver.
And do not forget to play some nice Rossini music during
the meal.
Buen provecho, Robert...

name. It has also kept the essence of our passion for
wine, handed down over the generations with a sole objective:
to improve, year on year, the winery’s commitment to the world
of wine. This was the vision of Vicente Gandía, first generation
and founder of the company.
•2000 - ‘Fusta nova’ is born.
•2001 - Construction of the winery in the vineyards on the
Hoya de Cadenas Estate. 15,000 American and French oak
casks.
•2002 - First vintage of ‘Hoya de Cadenas Private Reserve’.
•2003 - First vintage of ‘Generación 1’.
The care and attention, passion and effort that we put into
producing premium wines is the result of knowledge and skills
handed down from fathers to sons over four generations.
As a result of this spirit of ongoing growth and renewal,
Vicente Gandía Winery is one of Spain’s leading bottled wine
companies and does business in over 85 countries across all
five continents.
If you´ve exhausted the pleasures of the beach and want to
go elsewhere for entertainment, Costa Blanca has a whole
range of leisure activities lined up. Surely, you will never
run out of things to do here.
It is a great place to take advantage of the fact you are on
holiday and away from all that restricts you in your daily life –
anything from a work commitment to a club membership can
limit you opportunities with all things new and exciting. However,
you’ll probably only be away from this routine for a maximum
of two weeks and so it is important to do your research
beforehand; you don’t want to be stuck in your hotel room for
the first couple of hours of each morning working out what to
do and where to do it – things which are especially difficult to
plan if you are travelling en masse.
Great suggestions are water sports, cycling, a cookery course
which incorporates local cuisine (you would certainly not regret
learning how to make the Costa Blanca stewy vegetable
rice dish, “La Olleta”!), learning Spanish or visiting some of
the local hotspots for night time activity. You’ll see all these
activities will give you a glimpse of local life, something unique
for your Costa Blancan holiday. Avoid the night spots famous
for the tourists – you may as well stay at home.
Ask in bars where the staff go, ask your water sports or cookery
tutors for some tips…you’ll see a whole new side to the
resort and open your eyes to what real Spanish life is (a hint –
it’s not about drinking litres of sangria!). A fun and novel idea
would be to try your luck in a casino. You certainly don’t have
to be a professional to be thoroughly exhilarated by Spain’s
juegos de casino but we do recommend you invest a little time
with practice beforehand – learning the rules and a couple
of easily employed tricks to impress your audience. By doing
the preparation, you’ll be able to take best advantage of your
night at the tables and maybe even win enough to fund a second
holiday!
However you decide to spend your time, try your best to incorporate
the whole travel group into your plans. It isn’t as hard
as it may seem to please everyone, especially with the long
days of Spanish sun and the variety of leisure activities the
Costa Blanca has to. All it takes is a little background work!
At CostaBlancaSpain.biz, you’ve found an ideal place to start!
COSTA BLANCA
It´s got to be arguably the most famous coast in Spain, Costa
Blanca draws millions of tourists each year. Lying on the
eastern coast, the White Coast is one of those resorts where
everyone can find their place under the sun, from sophisticated
towns where life goes on 25 hours a day to quaint little
villages where the peace and tranquility is feature.
Its clear blue waters and miles of white sandy beaches are certainly
a major attraction. Beautiful mountains parallel to the sea
are on the north coast. Here you can marvel at the Moorish villages
where olive trees and hidden coves abound. To the south
is where you will find the beaches mushrooming with palm trees,
the sparkling, turquoise sea and rows of cafes and restaurants.
Within the mountainous interior are a series of fascinating medieval
towns and fortified villages which have been largely unaffected
by modernism and tourism. Inland from the beaches,
Costa Blanca has one of Spain’s most fertile areas. The region is
renowned for its citrus trees supplied all over the world. Almond
trees and date palms abounding with blossoms also blanket the
earth.
Every part of Costa Blanca is indeed a treasure to discover, a
place to relax and enjoy. You can bask in the sun, hide away at
some secret cove, or meet new friends and party like there s no
tomorrow. Whatever you fancy, Costa Blanca is sure to please.
Alicante is the capital and major city of Costa Blanca , but it is
Benidorm that attracts the most visitors. Benidorm is an expansive
holiday playground and tourist spot in every sense of the
word. The place offers every amenity a tourist could want. With
a safe, kindred atmosphere, safe waters and a host of activities
to do, Benidorm is ideal for family vacations. It also has a lively
nightlife, with hundreds of bars and clubs catering mainly for
British tourists.
There are good quality, cheap bus services within the main resorts
and to towns in close proximity. Taxi cabs are also good value,
especially for those traveling as a group. There are also some
affordable, local car rental companies, best with those wishing to
explore off the beaten paths.
BEACHES
INFORMATION
The Costa Blanca , with its striking mix of sandy beaches and
top-of-the-line resorts, has somehow managed to fuse the
sophistication of city life and the simplicity of nature into one
of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe. The water knows
no age, nationality, or religion; people from all walks of life
flock to Costa Blanca to bronze their bodies and bask in the
sun. When evening strikes and the moon is hung beautifully
against the dark sky, many like to lie back on the sand and
look at the twinkling stars. If you decide to come to some of
these beaches, the best option is to rest in a serviced apartments,
like that you will enjoy much better your holidays.
There is over 100 kilometers of sandy beach from Valencia
in the north to Murcia in the south, best known for the Blue
Flags they have been given. The Blue Flag Awards are presented
by the European Federation of Environmental Education
(EFEE) every year, in recognition of the excellent quality
of water and amenities.
Living in the warmth and friendship of an expatriate community
has many benefits – but will your friends know what to do, who
to call, how to help arrange a funeral to suit your own and your
family’s wishes. Golden Leaves international funeral planning service
will help you pre-plan and pre-pay for your repatriation and/or funeral
wherever you have chosen to live.
A Golden Leaves Funeral Plan is a
secure way to pre-plan and prepay
for your funeral. This is not
an insurance policy as some plans
are. No health check is required
and no personal questions need
to be asked. Anyone can take out
a Golden Leaves plan and at any
age. Many thousands of people
in the UK and expatriates abroad
have now planned and paid for
their funerals as part of a sensible
and responsible approach to organising
their lives. Golden Leaves
Limited has been at the forefront
of Pre-paid Funeral Planning since
1984 when such plans firstbecame
available in the UK. Golden Leaves
is a founder member of the National
Association for Pre-paid Funeral
Plans. From January 1st 2002, Funeral
Planning became a regulated
activity by the Financial Services
Authority.
Golden Leaves is a registered provider
with the Funeral Planning
Authoritywhich monitors the marketing,
financial and service provisions
of the Plan providers it regulates.
Golden Leaves is now available
throughout the UK, Europe
and other countries and is provided
to you locally by authorised
Funeral Directors, Financial
Service Advisers and authorised
representatives. All Funeral Directors
accepted to provide Golden
Leaves services must first satisfy a
number of stringent requirements.
Not least, they must demonstrate
outstanding service records in the
communities they serve, and must
be affiliated to accredited professional
associations. Golden Leaves’
UK appointees are members of the
National Association of Funeral Directors
(NAFD) and/or The Society
of Allied and Independent Funeral
Directors (SAIF) or the Funeral-
Standards Council (FSC).
