MEMBERSHIP NEWS
From the GM
As November begins it brings to
mind many different things. The
Fall Season is in full stride, the
cooler mornings and evenings
have arrived, the beauty and
colors of our Virginia landscape
and Thanksgiving is almost here.
That means lots of turkey, stuffing
and football on Thanksgiving Day. It also makes me think
about what I’m thankful for. I am thankful for my family
and loved ones, my friends including all our wonderful
members at the best club on the planet and the great
people I am fortunate to be able to work with every day.
There is no better place to be a part of than Fauquier
Springs Country Club. I am very lucky.
Everyone is aware of our reduction of dues in some of our
membership categories which we approved at the end of
August. Since then I am pleased to say that our efforts to
grow the membership has started to see some success.
From the time of the announcement, we have 19 new
members. Even though this time of year we do have some
attrition, it is encouraging to see that compared to last year,
the attrition rate is down. Below is a brief look at how
August and September compared in 2017 and 2016.
All in all we are pleased with the early success and with
the hard work Samantha Bishop, our Membership Sales
Manager is doing, we believe this success will continue. We
also thank our membership for helping in spreading the
word of what a great club we have here at Fauquier Springs
Country Club. With your help we should reach all the goals
we have set. Thank you.
Our new Grille Room dinner menu has been extremely
well-received. We are seeing many of our members much
more for dinner. I have been told by many members they
are starting from the top and working their way down. The
menu was a group effort between Chef Tom and his staff,
Sous Chef David PettyJohn, PM Sous Chef Zach Hale and our
new F&B Manager Adam Cantrell. Thank you, gentlemen,
for an outstanding menu.
Make sure you read through this newsletter for more info
about the wonderful things we have planned:
Don’t forget to contact Samantha Bishop at sbishop@
fauquiersprings.com to make your reservations for these
great events. Also, I’d like to thank those who have been
making reservations for dinner in the Grille Room. It has
helped tremendously for our staffing and flow of the evening.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and I look
forward to seeing everyone around the club!
We are pleased to announce that
Adam Cantrell has been promoted
to Food & Beverage Manager. Adam
has been with the club for 11 years
and brings a wealth of knowledge as
well as the enthusiasm that will help
him be a success in leading his staff.
With regards to the Grille Room and Banquet serving staff,
Adam is implementing a training program that will allow us
MEMBERSHIP NEWS
Soon-To-Be Fathers:
Jeff Pianelli
& Justin Deal
Jeff, what has been Eileen's
biggest food craving during
the pregnancy? Grapefruit,
cottage cheese, ice cream (which
is tough for me not to join in on the fun) and fruit roll-ups
(strawberry) and I mean ONLY strawberry. Can’t come
home with a mixed flavor box or it’s going to be a long
night!
How many diapers do you think your baby will go
through in the first year? Great question and I have no
clue. For a year…thinking of six per day avg gets us over 2K.
Suggestions welcome!
What parenting skills are you bringing to the table? I
come from a family very focused on manners and treatment
of others, Eileen the same, so I think we have a great base
to start. Please, Thank You, Yes Sir, Yes Ma’am, respect your
elders, in God’s eyes we are all the same, hold the door
when you can, ladies sit first, do the dishes if you didn’t
cook, “these” or “those” not “these one’s”, make your bed,
show up on time, gratitude, family always gets a kiss with
the hug, if it isn’t yours it goes back the same or better than
when you borrowed it, shake a hand and look them in the
eye, elbow in on the jumpshot, Pat's Steaks (never Geno’s),
Fly Eagles Fly and Rocky Balboa is a real man who still lives
in South Philly. Eileen would say I’m OCD with regards to
the house and clutter. I know for an infant, this won’t work
but by 6 or 7, she will know why we color code our closet!
Are you or Eileen more likely to be the parent who says
“no”? Initial thought, me. The reality answer of being a
Daddy, I’m guessing I will be the one who gives in more than
not. From what my friends and family have relayed to me,
it’s tough to be the “No guy” when you see her little face.
What year do you think you will buy your first
minivan? Year 2057. With all the nice SUV’s out there, I
have a good feeling we can avoid the van. Nothing against a
van, it’s just not my style.
From 1-10 how prepared do you feel for the baby’s
arrival (with 10 being most prepared)? A strong 7. We
have taken in all the info we can from friends and family
and to say we are a 10 on the scale would be tough. Maybe
if we are blessed with a second child, we could tick that
answer up a little.
At what age to you think you’ll buy your child’s first set
of golf clubs? Is it weird if I already have them? What can I
say, the basement is full of golf goodies. As far as when she
will use them, I will leave that up to her. My hope is to make
golf something she finds as a fun way to spend some time.
If she takes up the game great but, I won’t be pushing her
to do so.
How many happy
hours do you expect
to go to the first year
after the baby is
born? Great question.
Eileen and I are so
happy to be blessed
with this gift that we
will enjoy the hours
with her so they will all
be happy!
"Baby Jeff"
Justin, what has been Dale's
biggest food craving during the
pregnancy? Chocolate
How many diapers do you think
your baby will go through in the
first year? 1,000
What parenting skills are you
bringing to the table? Patience
Are you or Dale more likely to be the parent who says
“no”? Depends on the gender. Boy, me, girl, my wife
What year do you think you will buy your first
minivan? Not happening
From 1-10 how prepared do you feel for the baby’s
arrival (with 10 being most prepared)? 5
At what age to you think you’ll buy your child’s first set
of golf clubs? Might
happen before birth
How many happy
hours do you expect
to go to the first year
after the baby is born?
Let’s put the over/
under at 5. I’ll probably
bet the under.
"Baby JD"

"Easy Cheesy"
Pumpkin Risotto
Oh, the frost is on the pumpkin
and the goose is getting fat, time
to put a penny in an old man’s
hat. If you haven’t a penny, a
ha’penny will do, and if you haven’t a ha’penny, then
God bless you. Or something like that, I think you get
the idea. It’s that time of year again, when all the local
merchants pull out their Christmas directions and
“Silent Night” forever rings in our ears. Yes, it means it
is almost Halloween!! And as we roll full bore into fall,
what screams of the season more than the all-American
pumpkin?
Risotto is a classic Italian rice dish made traditionally
from Arborio rice. Arborio rice is a short grain, starchy
white rice named after a town in the Piedmont region
of Italy. During the cooking process, the rice slowly
releases its starch, creating a creamy texture that still
maintains its “al dente” character. Quality Arborio rice is
now grown in the United States, so the origin of the rice
is less important today. There are other varieties of rice
that can be used, however it should be short grain, raw,
glutinous rice. With the popularity of risotto, it is now
possible to find Arborio rice in most local grocery stores.
Now for the co-star of our risotto dish…pumpkin! Let
me back track two steps first though. Any garnish,
protein or vegetable can be used in your risotto once
you have mastered the cooking of Arborio rice. However,
the freshest, most local products will produce the best
results. With baseball season almost over, we know it is
fall in the Piedmont region of Virginia. And nothing says
fall more than pumpkins! Are you in a rush and want to
keep your risotto under 30 minutes? Then use canned
pumpkin. If you wish to enjoy the splendor of the season
and visit one of the outstanding local farm markets, try
using fresh pumpkin.
"EASY CHEESY" PUMPKIN RISOTTO
2 tbsp vegetable oil
½ each medium yellow onion, fine dice
2 garlic cloves
pinch dry thyme
1½ cups Arborio rice
1 cup dry white wine
6 cups chicken stock
pinch ground nutmeg
pinch ground cinnamon
1 cup canned pumpkin or 1½ cup fresh pumpkin purée
1 cup heavy cream
1 oz unsalted butter
1 oz grated Parmesan cheese salt & pepper to taste
1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add oil,
onion and cook until translucent.
2. Add garlic and thyme, stir once, and immediately
add rice. Stir rice until each grain is well coated with
oil.
3. Add wine and cook until all the wine is absorbed
while continuously stirring.
4. Add 2 cups chicken stock and cook until it is
absorbed while continually stirring.
5. Add remaining chicken stock, nutmeg, cinnamon,
salt, pepper and pumpkin and cook until it is
absorbed while continually stirring.
6. Add cream, butter and Parmesan cheese and gently
cook to desired consistency.
Choose a small pumpkin, preferably a “pie pumpkin”
or even a butternut squash. Cut the pumpkin in half,
remove the seeds, butter a baking pan, place the squash
flesh side down and roast in a 375 degree oven until
tender. Once the pumpkin has cooled enough to handle,
remove outer skin and purée in a food processor, or dice
to give your risotto more texture. Enjoy!

GOLF NEWS
From the Pro Shop
TOURNAMENT RECAP: We had
another busy month here at the
club with hosting three outside
events: Angel Flight, Young
Professionals and the Gerry
Henson Memorial. All events
ran smoothly and our guests
left with many compliments regarding the golf course.
Hat’s off to Ed and his team for all their good work this
season.
Our member events this month included: Rider Cup,
Season Long Team Matchplay, Individual Season Long
Matchplay and our Two Person Scramble tournaments.
RIDER CUP: This year’s Rider Cup was our 20th
Annual playing of the “William M. Rider President’s
Cup”. This is a team event much like that of the PGA
Tour Ryder Cup that takes place here at the club over
the first weekend of October. Teams are comprised of
the club’s lowest handicap players and are captained
by the club President or Vice President (Huntley
Thorpe) and the Chairman of the Golf Committee
(Mike “Dawg” Daugherty). All players selected take
honor in representing the best that the club has to
offer. The golf is played at “scratch” which means
there are no handicap strokes given to any player
in any match, just golf in its purest form. Day one
featured three nine-hole matches in teams of two
players. Formats for day one were: Captain & Mate,
Alternate Shot and Better Ball. It was a great day for
team golf as we saw two lead changes and ended with
the President’s up
one point over the
Chairman’s going
into the second
day which was
Single’s Matchplay.
A strong showing
by the President’s
team proved to be
to much for the
Chairman’s as they
pulled out to a six
point victory of
15.5 to 9.5 to win
the cup.
President’s Team Members: Bryan Ross, Charles Robinson,
Scott Mesick, Brooke Howard, Steve Burke, Huntley Thorpe
(Captain), Scott Poe, Matt Gravett, Jim Hammer, Charlie
Peavley & Dale Edwards.
TWO PERSON SCRAMBLE: In one of our largest
fields for any tournament this year, we were treated to
some great golf by all for this member favorite. With
a modified handicap format, teams of two play with a
team handicap to go as low as they can. We had many
great scores across the board, however, there were two
that had the field shaking their heads. Ryan Poe and
Chris Ferrell shot a blistering 57 to win this year’s event.
Hot on their heels was the team of Mike & Drew Smith,
who shot
an equally
impressive
58 which
featured
an ACE on
#11 by Mike
Smith! Great
playing guys!
The field was
very tight
this year with
nine teams shooting scores of 64 and lower!
Congratulations again to Ryan & Chris on their great
round!
• Titleist: Ryan Poe & Chris Ferrell (above left)
• Runner-up: Mike & Drew Smith (above right)
• Third Place: Dana & Brooke Streep
• Fourth Place: Chris Blelloch & Patrick Heijmen
• Fifth Place: Dana & Greg Pappas
• Tied for Sixth: Dale & Wendy Edwards; Elliot
Perny & Edward Pregoff; Arjan Paulussen &
Mike Shipway; and Devin & Gabby Finan.

MEMBERSHIP GOLF NEWS NEWS
SEASON LONG MATCHPLAY RESULTS: Every year
we host our singles and team matchplay season long
tournaments. Each round has its own deadline date to
complete each match. Matches are then handicapped
based upon who is playing and from what tee. This a
great example of why golf is the game for everyone,
no other sport allows for players of different sexes,
abilities and ages to enjoy the same game as equally as
possible as golf.
Singles Final Four: Jim Hammer, Ray Hrabe, Tom
Baugh and Scott Dougall. The final match of Tom Baugh
vs Scott Dougall ended with Scott up 4 & 3.
Team Final Four: Jim Hammer & Scott Poe, Greg
Bengston & Gary Hix, Brooke Howard & Matt
Gravett and Phoebe Lyons & Nadine Bulmer. The
final match of Howard & Gravett vs Lyons & Bulmer
was a true battle of men vs women and they didn’t
disappoint! Congratulations to the team of Phoebe
Lyons and Nadine Bulmer on winning this year’s team
championship with a score of 5 & 4!
FALL LEAGUE: Our season is in full swing for the
2017 Fall League. This is a team event where we host
or travel to another club in the area to play matches
on Thursday’s throughout October and November.
Each team brings 12 players and teams are broken
into 2 player teams vs the other clubs team. Points are
earned per hole and are totaled up for a match winner.
108 total points are available per match. As of 10/26
we were sitting in third place within the league and
gaining momentum! Here is how our matches have
gone thus far:
1. Fawn Lake: Loss (40.5 – 67.5)
2. Lee’s Hill: Win (60 – 48)
3. Medal of Honor: Win (64.5 – 43.5)
4. Regency: Win (59-49)
5. Meadows Farm: Win (55 – 53)
If you are interested in joining the team for a match,
please contact the golf shop. The only requirement is
that you have a valid GHIN handicap to compete. All
matches start at 10:00am. This is a great way to meet
new people and see other facilities.
JUNIOR CLUB SWAP: As a soon-to-be father, thinking
about how many pairs of basketball and baseball shoes
my mom had to buy over the years is a scary! Much like
our feet, our golf swings are all unique and we need
equipment that is properly fit for us to achieve maximum
enjoyment and performance. We understand that buying
new clubs each time your son or daughter grows a few
inches is just not easy to do and we want to help. Some
of our members in the past have run the “Junior Club
Swap” where members can send in pictures of the set
with a short description and can swap them with another
member or purchase from them. We are in the process
of gathering the information needed to get us started.
In the meantime, if you have a junior set that is in good
shape and would like to offer them on the “swap” please
take a few pictures and add a short description of the
set. When complete or if you have any questions, please
email me JPianelli@FauquierSprings.com . Please be sure
to include your full name and a phone number along with
any other information you would like to pass along. We
look forward to a great 2018 Junior Program!
GOLF SHOP: We are officially in the “multi-layer”
round of golf weather. Cold in the morning and slowly
warming up as you make your way around the course.
If you’re anything like me, you start the round with
nothing in the cart and by the time it is over, you have
half a closet to put back in the car! With that said, come
in and check out our fall apparel and cut down on the
clutter with one of the ultra-warm pieces we have to
offer. Don’t forget to take care of your head and hands
when it’s chilly, we have cart mitts, hats and headbands
in stock and ready to go. In the next few weeks we
should be seeing our winter selection which is perfect
for both on and off the course including: sweatshirts,
hoodies and more. Stop in and see us! Please see our
new hours on the last page of this newsletter.
MEMBERSHIP GROUNDS NEWS
From Grounds
So far the fall weather has been
warmer and dryer than normal
which has allowed us to get some
seed and fertilizer in the ground.
We’ve been seeding tees, a few
weak areas on fairways, green
surrounds and a few rough areas.
We also seeded annual rye on the driving range tee and
the short game area. This helps explain why we’ve asked
all of you to use the mats for a couple weeks to give the
seed a chance to geminate. Sorry for the inconvenience
but it’s a necessary evil.
You also may have noticed that we have started to use
the airway on the fairways and intermediate rough. As
I mentioned last month we’re not planning on doing a
core aerification this season but using the airway, which
is much less disruptive, helps improve rooting and
relieving compaction considerably.
We are also getting into frost season, I’ve talked a little
in the past but with the season upon us I thought I’d
refresh everyone’s memory and answer the often asked
question “Why is the Superintendent not allowing us to
tee off yet?”
“Frost Delay!” Why won’t Ed or Chris let us play when
there is frost out there? What’s the harm? I’ve got other
things to do today! My wife said I
had to get home and clean gutters!
Or, I don’t want to miss the 1:00 kick
off! Other than that gutter thing I
understand your frustration, I’m an
NFL fan myself! (Sorry about that I
couldn’t help myself.)
To explain the delay I should first explain, what is frost?
It is condensation formed when the surface temperature
drops to the dew point in the air and that temp happens
to be below 32 degrees. Why is that a problem? It’s not.
The visible white crystals we see are not what creates
the potential for damage. It’s what going on inside the
grass plant that is the problem.
The water inside the plant also freezes. With annuals
such as flowers and some of our plants in the garden
this is usually a death sentence. Most annual plant tissue
structure is much more delicate and expansion of the
freezing water will damage the tissue. Just like a water
pipe freezing and bursting. The tissue of a cool season
grass plant on the other hand is much hardier and can
withstand the freezing and thawing.
Before I forget a reminder about November 5 and our
annual “Superintendents Revenge”. For those of you who
haven’t tried it it’s a great time. We have a few new ideas
this season. Although I do have some disappointing news,
at least for some of you, we are not going to be using one
of the favorites this season. We’ve decided to retire the
infamous “Bedspring tee box”. It may make a comeback
in the future but I’ve heard some of you are getting tired
of it so I thought we should put it to bed for a season or
two. Again, sorry about that I just couldn’t help myself.
One last note before I finish, Just this morning when we
started making our rounds we discovered the storm we
had last night left us a little surprise on number 6 green.
I’m sure those of you that have been playing lately have
noticed the scars. It should heal up in a few weeks but
until then we will keep the hole away from that area.
The second picture is
what the green surface
looked like after the
debris was removed.
Thanks for reading my
November article and
please, anyone who has any suggestions or comments on
what I mentioned in this newsletter or anything else going
on out on the course please feel free to call, email, catch
me out on the course, or speak with a Grounds Committee
member.
