With winter spreading its effects across<br />
the country there are plenty of cars<br />
that won’t be starting come the first<br />
cold snap. And while battery sales<br />
have slightly spread more across the<br />
year, it’s the winter that sends sales into a spike as<br />
tired batteries give up the ghost for the final time.<br />
<strong>The</strong> sales spread is better for retailers, who do<br />
not need to keep quite as many batteries in stock<br />
as they once did. But as with so many other replacement<br />
parts, the battery segment has become more<br />
complicated with the rise of stop-start systems and<br />
increasingly high levels of luxury, convenience and<br />
entertainment facilities.<br />
It all adds up to a more complicated but buoyant,<br />
profitable segment. And with battery failures being<br />
the biggest cause of breakdowns, motorists need to<br />
be assured their car’s battery is in the best condition.<br />
Yuasa says that during its battery-testing workshop<br />
trial 11 percent of cars needed a replacement battery<br />
and 27 percent required recharging or reconditioning.<br />
