In1963Itookahalfdayoffrom schooltogetmydrivers<br />
licence.TwoweekslaterIwasinmyfirstcarralydrivinga<br />
VW Beetle.Overthenext20yearsIcompetedineveryraly<br />
intheeasternstatesthatmybudgetwouldalow.With<br />
variousnavigatorswehadmanywinsandthe1968<br />
QueenslandRalyChampionship.OtherralycarsthatIhad<br />
wereanexHDTRoundAustraliaTrialMonarowhichI<br />
acquiredfrom HaryFirthandthefirstToranaSLR5000to<br />
competeinQueensland,possiblyAustralia.<br />
In1964somefriendsandIformedtheQueenslandVW Car<br />
Cluband,duetoaconnectionIhadwiththe10day<br />
BrisbaneRoyalShow,Iputtogetheradrivingdisplayteam<br />
comprisedof16clubmembersandtheirVW beetles.The<br />
presentationwasverysuccessfulandappearedatthe1965,<br />
1966and1967BrisbaneShows.Howeverthenoveltyof<br />
doingitwaswearingofwithintheClub.Iwantedtocontinue<br />
soIwasabletoconvincefourBrisbaneForddealerstolend<br />
mefourCortinasforthe1968BrisbaneShow.Threeother<br />
ralydriverswhoIknewwereaskedtodrivetheothercars.<br />
AlthoughFordwereveryhappywiththeresultsitdidnotfit<br />
inwiththeircurentpromotionalplanssoIwenttothe<br />
BrisbaneHoldenDealersGroupandasaresulthadfourof<br />
therecentlyreleasedMonarosforthe1969BrisbaneShow.<br />
Istartedtoreceiveenquiresfrom otherShowSocietiesand<br />
itwasatthispointthatitevolvedintomybusinesswhich<br />
wouldlastforthenext40years.<br />
ItwastimetogotothenextstepandImadeasubmission<br />
toHoldenHeadOficeinMelbournetoform apermanent<br />
team totravelthecountryalyearround.Iwas23yearsold<br />
atthetimeandwhentheyagreedtoitIwasthemost<br />
surprisedpersonintheroom.ItwasfortunatethatJohn<br />
BagshawwasSalesDirectoratthetimeandhewasvery<br />
keenoninvolvementinmotorracingandaliedactivity.They<br />
agreedtosupplyfourMonarosreplacedeachyearplusa<br />
budgetandcarmaintenance.ThenewMonaroswere<br />
availableinbrightnewcoloursandsoundedgreat.Iformed<br />
acompanytoputtheoperationonabusinessbasisand<br />
employedtheotherthreedrivers.<br />
ForthefirsttenyearswewoulddrivethecarstoShows<br />
anywhereineasternAustralia.HoweverIthenacquireda<br />
sixcartransporterandemployedadriversomyselfandthe<br />
otherdriversflewtoperformancevenues.Thiscutthe“away<br />
from home”timedownconsiderably.<br />
AsregardsthearenapresentationIwantedtobeup-market<br />
from theusual“stunt”carshowsoIcaledittheMonaro<br />
PrecisionDrivingTeam.Thesewerebrandnewcarsandwe<br />
didourbestnottodamagethem,howeverithappened<br />
occasionaly.Wedidformationdriving,2wheelrampjumps,<br />
asequencedrivingtomusicandvarious“crossovers”<br />
utilisingthedirtovalshowgroundtracksandthegrassed<br />
infields.
