Introduction 

Positioning Statement 

Obstetric fistulas are virtually a thing of the past in the western world. 

But in rural Ethiopia where women have little or no access to maternal healthcare 

they are still a horrendous preventable childbirth injury that robs women of their 

life and dignity, some as young as 11 years old. 

A fistula is a small hole between the birth canal and the bladder and is a result 

of prolonged child labour, sometimes up to 5 days and in 93% of cases result in 

a still birth. 

The resulting fistula means these women constantly leak urine and faeces carrying 

around a putrid smell and as a consequence are ostracised by their community. 

In most cases their family doesn’t want them and their husband doesn’t 

want them. They are condemned to a life of shame and isolation. 

The Dr Hamlin Fistula Foundation is dedicated to eradicating fistulas forever 

and giving these women back their life and dignity through surgery, rehabilitation 

and counselling. 

Started by Drs Reg and Catherine Hamlin we have treated and rid over 50,000 women of Obstetric Fistulas 

and other serious childbirth injuries since our inception over 50 years ago and are constantly recruiting, 

training and deploying local midwives to rural clinics. 

We exist purely thanks to your generous donations and are very proud of what we have achieved here in Ethiopia. 

But to us this is just the beginning. The more fistulas we treat, the more midwives we train the closer we get to 

our ultimate purpose, and not just in Ethiopia. 

Based on our success rate in Ethiopia we are now ready to rid the women of rural Uganda of these horrendous, 

totally preventable childbirth injuries and give them back a life lived with dignity. 

A life they deserve. A life every woman deserves.

Logo usage 

Consistent use of the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation is essential. 

Logo must be legible and contrast on all designs. All those authorised to 

use the brand are embassadors of the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation.


Incorrect logo usage 

It is important to use the logo correctly, please do not attempt to 

recreate, change, or modify the colours or dimensions of the logo.

the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation. We exist to 

ensure that the team in Ethiopia can continue its mission 

of eradicating obstetric fistula from Ethiopia are ensuring 

the health and dignity of mothers from preventable and 

treatable childbirth injuries. 

This is what drives us every day, and this is what drives 

our team in Ethiopia. What you support as our donors is 

a dream which can be fulfilled. Catherine Hamlin’s dream 

is to eradicate obstetric fistula in Ethiopia so that every 

woman can be free from these atrocious internal

What is it? A hole between the birth canal 

and bladder and/or rectum, caused by a long, 

unrelieved obstructed labour where a woman 

has no access to emergency obstetric care. 

What happens? Women who survive a long 

obstructed labour will suffer debilitating internal 

injuries that leave them incontinent of urine and/ 

or faeces, permanently. In 93% of cases, their 

baby will die. Ashamed and alone, women are 

often isolated by their communities with no hope 

for their future. 

How is it treated? The majority of fistula patients 

can be cured with a single surgery. For some 

women with very severe injuries, like Zahra 

whose story is enclosed, it may take a few 

surgeries. The Hamlin surgical team has a 95% 

success rate.

healing and recovery. Our patients
