They got me right in, did a free look overestimate and was
honest about the cost. No surprise phone calls after with
more stuff wrong that didn’t make sense. Saved me from
buying a new vehicle and making mine last longer at a
great price. Thank you and I’ll be a forever customer now
and recommend to friends. It’s hard to trust any car people
these days and I finally found a place I can. Hope they never
change staff or ownership so it stays this way! Excellent
service, friendly, fast. I was very pleased with the service
provided on my vehicle. ~ Debra N. Citrus Heights, CA
ated #3 best food truck
Sacramento area, and
#5 for the best burger by
A-list voters.
What more is there to say about this
food truck. To achieve these numbers
it is quite obvious that the food was
amazing.
FOOD TRUCK OF THE MONTH
I am a sucker for fried pickles. I don’t
know why but I have been searching
and searching for something that
would compare to the “frickels” I had
in Corvallis, Oregon at a brewery in
the downtown area. I will have to say
that these come really close and they
are the have to try item for the month.
THE DIVE FOOD TRUCK
I am very excited that The Dive has a
food truck in the area and is making
the stops at all the breweries around
town. If you are looking for a schedule
for the food trucks check in on our
Facebook page for the magazine
where we post it weekly for the four
breweries in town.
HOLIDAY SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE
INGREDIENTS
* 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
* 1/4 tsp salt
* 1 Tbsp Holiday Baking Spice
* 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter, softened
* 3/4 cup sugar
* 1 large egg
* 1 1/2 tsp Princess emulsion
DIRECTIONS
RECIPE BY MASON
Creaming together butter and Sugar
1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with
parchment paper.
2. Cream butter with sugar in a medium bowl with electric or
stand mixer on low until smooth; add in egg yolk and Princess
emulsion.
3. Whisk together flour, Holiday Baking Spice in a large
bowl. Stir into the butter mixture. Mix until dough is firm
and smooth. Form dough into a disk; wrap in plastic and chill
dough at least 30 mins. Overnight is better.
4. Roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
5. Cut out cookies with a 3 1/2-inch round cookie cutter (or
shapes, too. Be sure the dough is cold when it goes into the
oven so the shapes hold) and place 2-inches apart on prepared
baking sheets. Bake until lightly browned around the edges,
14-17 mins. Remove from oven and transfer cookies to a wire
rack; cool completely before icing.
Icing
INGREDIENTS
2 lbs powdered sugar.
2-5 Tbs water, more if needed (we always use a bit more)
1 Tbs meringue powder.
DIRECTIONS
Put the powdered sugar and meringue powder in a mixing bowl
and turn the mixer on low to blend. Add the water slowly
letting it fully incorporate until you get the consistency you are
looking for. Thicker for piping and thinner for flooding.
The meringue power is what makes your icing dry firm so you
can stack or bag the cookies and the icing won’t smear or
smudge. If you like it soft, omit this ingredient. If you use this
and have leftover icing, seal it in a tupperware or put saran
wrap over it, like right on top of the icing or the top will crust
over.

ON THE FAMILY ORCHARD
’m not just a sales person, or a broker. It’s great for the customers to have no
separation between the person they’re buying from and the person who’s growing
it,” says Camelia Enriquez Miller, as part of the fourth generation of the familyowned
and operated Twin Peaks Orchards. The orchards, at 105 years old, were settled
in 1912 within the foothills of Newcastle by Miller’s step-great-grandfather and his
wife when they immigrated from Japan.
Growing and array of fruits year round on their 80 acres, on Twin Peaks Orchards
you’ll find rows of peaches, plums, nectarines, persimmons and oriental pears in the
summer. Currently, they are picking pomegranates and late season plums, and they
expect to pick the fall fruits like persimmons, mandarins, and various lemons (like
Meyer lemons) soon, so get your farmer’s market baskets ready.
Winter is not without its wonderland of bounty either, as they anticipate the arrival
of their winter citruses, including oranges, pomelos, blood oranges, and their specialty
persimmon, the “amagaki,” which Miller considers even more popular than their
summer peaches because of its exclusivity to their farm. Though harvest time is over,
Miller and her family are hard at work cleaning up after the orchard and maintaining
equipment.
“I think that’s a huge advantage - just the relationship between the families that are
buying from us and serving their families, and [us], the farmers,” she says. Her family’s
passion and care for their fruits shines through their commitment to handpicking
and hand packing them on-site. They also have their own certified food-processing
kitchen, where they prepare jams, jellies, marmalades and dried fruit. Miller herself is
the owner of Orchard Delights, their six certified organic orchards, where peaches,
plums, nectarines, persimmons, and some citrus are cultivated.
The orchards’ seasonal yields are found everywhere from local farmers markets in
Auburn and Sacramento, and grocery stores such as Newcastle Produce, Whole
Foods, Nugget Markets, and some Raley’s. Find them also in the plates of chic
downtown Sacramento restaurants including all the Selland restaurants like Ella
and The Kitchen, to Paragary’s, Hawks Public House, Grange Restaurant & Bar,
Localis, and Auburn’s own Carpe Vino, to name a few.
Their Orchard Dinners featuring chefs who cook and interact with diners
demonstrate their transparency to the community. Sometimes they will have a
collection of about four-five chefs, and other times they host individual chefs, not
unlike Eric Alexander of Carpe Vino and Chris Barnum-Dann of Localis.
To top it off, Twin peaks Orchards was one of the featured farms at Sacramento’s
Farm-to-Fork Tower Bridge Dinner in September, the fundraiser for the annual
Farm-to-Fork Festival and other related events, where guests partake in locally
sourced courses at the famous landmark.
“Small family farms like this have the advantage of having that connection with
their community... The customers get to know the farm they’re supporting, they
get to meet [our] kids, they get to come out and visit the farms. We’re constantly
welcoming people to come up to the farm, whether we have something or not,
come stop by.”
MANDARIN DREAMS
ne of the great things about Placer County is
its bounties of seasonal events, one of which
is the Mountain Mandarin Festival, where all
things mandarin will fill the Gold Country
Fairgrounds during the days of November 17th-19th.
Thousands of pounds of mandarins and their zesty scent
will arrive at the Fairgrounds from local growers like Pilz
Produce, Willow Creek Ranch, and Newcastle Mandarin
Ranch.
Celebrate Placer County’s one-of-a-kind mandarins and
load up on heaps of them from the 15-20 mandarin growers
under the bustling outdoor tents, with free samples to
fill all. Pick up other tangy products like mandarin olive
oils, syrups, salad dressings, jams, jellies, and salsas also
available from some of the 200+ vendors. Get your holiday
gift list started or finished, find local home product, arts
and crafts and even windows and doors. Food will not be
scarce, and every food vendor is required to have a dish
that incorporates mandarin in some way - in eats like
pizza, chili, tater tots, pulled pork, fudge, and milkshakes
- and that’s an orangey fare you won’t want to miss.
Locals can participate in competitions like the Peele &
Eat contest, where you can gobble the most mandarins
in one minute, or see which farm won the Best Mandarin
based on taste, sweetness, and easiest peele. On Sunday,
the Mandarin Recipe cooking contest displays the 30-40
entrees in the three categories of main dish, side dish, and
dessert dish. Past recipes presented mandarin-inspired
cuisine like mandarin-glazed chicken wings, mandarin
rice and shrimp salad, and mandarin sauces, vegetables
and pies.
Jordan the Science Wizard is back to wow kids and adults
with experiments making fire and smoke, as well as is
Sadie the Balloon Lady with her crazy hats. Halau Hula
Pono will also entertain you with Hawaiian dances while
you eat your own chocolate-covered fresh mandarins.
Karen Spencer, the festival’s spokesperson, can attest to
the sweet singularity of Placer County foothill mandarins.
“Mandarins from the foothills are especially delicious
because we have these hot days and cold nights, and so the
same things that makes Napa Valley perfect for grapes is
what makes Placer County foothills perfect for mandarins.
It really brings out the flavor and the sweetness in them.
So they have a very distinctive taste and if you ever try
one of them and then open up a mass-produced mandarin,
you can tell the difference immediately.”
And don’t worry if you end up buying 10lbs of mandarins
- there’s a service powered by Boy Scouts where you can
check in your produce at their booth and then have them
take it to your car when you leave (donations accepted).
Proceeds from the festival also go towards scholarships
of the Newcastle Area Business Association for youth
furthering their education.
Rain or shine, come get your Placer County foothill
mandarins in all of their orange glory.
THE SOMETHING NEW I TRIED THIS SUMMER
I decided to try Enduro racing this year and here is what I learned:
TRAINING
You say you are going to train but let’s be
honest. Winter is cold. The first Enduro
seems super far away. Before you know it’s
here, you are waiting your turn in the gate
and probably thinking I should have done
an interval or two. This habit continues
throughout the entire season. Every race as
you suffer on the climbing you think that’s
it when I get home I am going to train!
But you don’t. You go home and ride the
chairlift. I am convinced this is why there
are so many registrations for sale the week
of the race.
LODGING
Most races have camping options which
seems like a great way to save money in
the most expensive sport ever. Until you
actually camp. You ever get a good night’s
sleep camping? Our first place to camp was
a beautiful ranch outside Toro Park. The
kind owner allowed us to park our truck
with rooftop tent on her property near
a barn with a shower. It was serene and
quiet. During the day. At night the animals
came alive. Horses playing with buckets,
peacocks calling out to each other, foxes
running around. In Mendocino, I enjoyed
the rooster that crowed all night. He
seriously needed a trip to the crock-pot. In
Mammoth, it was so cold the dog’s water
froze at our campsite. The last race of the
season I thought; I work a corporate job,
own a company and moonlight as a bike
park coach. I would like to stay in a hotel.
It was pure bliss so I say treat yo’ self.
RACING
The season started in May. No joke In
October on the last two stages of the race
for the entire season I learned how to race.
At the finale in Ashland, I wasn’t happy
with the first two stages. They didn’t feel
fast. I checked the times afterward and sure
enough, I was in third place. I had been
third place, Jeni, all season. I decided right
then not anymore. I started talking to the
other women in my category asking if they
were standing up pedaling the entire stage.
I realized in talking to them I wasn’t going
hard enough. When we started the next
stage I went for it like my life depended on
it. I was a wheezing, drooling maniac flying
down the trail. I had to will my brain to
not ride my brakes. Luckily this stage had
rock gardens I was comfortable with and I
was able to gain time flying through them
without hesitation. This stage was also over
20 minutes long. I thought I was going to
die sprinting that long. However, it worked.
I won that stage and the next one as well
moving me up to second place. When I was
recapping the race to Paige days later she
laughs and exclaims, “Jeni finally learned
how to race! If you don’t feel like you can’t
speak or breathe you are not racing!” I
really wish I would have tried this method
oh I don’t know FIVE MONTHS ago.
THE PODIUM
Change clothes before award time. I was
lucky enough to podium a few times so I
have a few photos of helmet hair, a jersey
that looks like it smells which it does, and
dirty knee pads stuck in place from sweat.
WOMEN
The most important thing I learned is the
amazing camaraderie of the women out
there. I would like to say it was because it
was the beginner category. However, I met
some great women in the other categories
as well. At the beginning of the race, we
would nervously huddle together waiting
for the long day to begin. True to form each
of us tried to be last in the start lineup. If
there were any men at the starting line
we would insist all of them go before us.
Which often meant we were sitting there
waiting to go while they fooled around
with their gear and tire pressure. We would
climb together, laugh together, wait for
each other after each stage and provide
encouragement along the way. If someone
was having a bad day we would climb
slowly with this person to keep her spirits
up.
The women I raced with were supportive,
amazing, and encouraging to say the least.
I am grateful to have met and learned from
them. I was really excited to convince my
friend Kim to race Ashland with me. She
was super nervous but as we were pre riding
we saw another rider who was walking the
rock gardens. I turned to her and said, “See
all different levels of riders racing. You are
here to have fun.” She had so much fun she
got on the podium her first race. Despite
having to stop on a stage to check on a guy
who tried to pass her on an exposed section
and went over the cliff. She also remarked
on how incredibly supportive and nice
everyone was.
For me, racing keeps me motivated, forces
me to try new terrain and gets me out on
my bike. Where I belong.
I can’t wait for next season!
Diane Tharp is a watercolor artist residing
in Auburn, California. Diane has been
painting watercolors for approximately 20
years and tends to paint in themes based
on nature. She often infuses humor and
whimsy in her paintings, which make them
twice the fun to paint. Diane has shown
in many local galleries and art shows and
has sold extensively. She has had shows
at 20th Street Art, and artwork in many
shows at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center,
Blue Line Gallery, Art Fiesta, Auburn Art
Walk, and other venues. She has had
art selected to be part of the KVIE Art
Auction, as well as the Effie Yeaw Gala and
Art Auction for several years.
GARY LORD
Gary Lord and his wife Jan opened their
jewelry store, Sierra Moon Goldsmiths in
Old Town Auburn in 1978. They spent
30 years there guiding and growing the
business and retired in 2008. After retiring
as a goldsmith, Gary discovered clay in
2013 and knew within 30 minutes that he
was in for a wild and wonderful ride into a
fabulous new medium. The transition from
precious metals to humble clay has been
rewarding and exciting. His work is “one of
a kind” slab built art pottery and sometimes
involves extensive hand carving. Working
in this new, expanded scale has set Gary
free to go artistically where he could never
go in jewelry design.
DIANE J WOOD
Diane J Wood - works both in metal,
glass casting, Pate de Verre, and kiln
formed glass. Her work most often arrives
in the form of faces, study of nature and
spiral movement within the glass work.
With her background in ceramics, she
makes all her owns glass forms for her
sculptural wall work. The glass work is
an expression of movement, textures, and
the use of transparency of the glass. Diane
has studied under Dan Fenton for glass
casting, and Pate de Verre glass work. She
has a fine art jewelry glass line, and glass
sculptural work that is shown in galleries in
the United States, private residences and
internationally.
DOUGLAS VAN HOWD
Douglas Van Howd, Nevada born sculptor
and painter, has become well-known
worldwide for his wildlife and western

creations. He received his advanced art
education at the highly acclaimed Art
Center School in Southern California,
where he began to develop his exquisite
lifelike detailed style that enhances the
grace and movement he captures in his
work. This trademark has brought him
to a place of honor in his field and his
works are found in collections worldwide.
Doug Van Howd has been commissioned
to do work for heads of countries. His oil
painting of Yellowstone Falls was presented
to the Queen of the Netherlands during
the Netherlands-American Bicentennial
celebrations in Washington DC. He
has twice been received as a guest of the
government of Taiwan to present his
works to President Chiang Ching-Kuo
and President Lee Teng-hui. His bald
eagle “Masters of the Wind” is displayed in
the office of the Secretary of the Interior,
Washington DC, his portrait of Attorney
General Edwin Meece hangs in the Hall
of Justice, and his well-known “Friends
of Freedom” bronze sculpture, after many
years in the Roosevelt Room of the White
House, has a new home in the Reagan
Library.
BOBBIE PILLARD
Bobbie Pillard - Art has been a part of my
EMILE RIGHETTI
Ceramics and Kiln Formed Glass give me
the ability to work with my hands and
imagination. I often use found objects;
precious or semi-precious stones and
metals in the work I create, always trying
to create movement in what can be very
stiff feeling materials. It can be functional
and non-functional. I like to use colors
and textures from nature, combining my
ceramics and glass techniques to create
unusual pieces. Putting a glass dragonfly
on a ceramic piece or a ceramic frog on a
glass piece, adding copper or brass leaves
and vines to a piece make my pieces
different and unique. When someone
asks how I created the piece I know I
have captured their attention. I grew up
in San Francisco, CA where nature and
museums were all around me. I loved
art and took classes in high school and
college.
PAUL HARMAN
Paul Harman is an award-winning pastel
artist who has dabbled in art since high
school. In 2007 he retired from a long
career in law enforcement allowing him
to further his love of painting full time.
He studied for a year with Reif Erickson,
a distinguished pastel artist. He fell in love
with the pastel medium absorbing every
detail on composition and color he could
glean from his mentor throughout his year
of weekly instruction. Paul thoroughly
immersed himself in the medium attending
pastel workshops by other pastel artists as
well as taking advantage of numerous plein
air painting opportunities. Paul is a realism
painter who strives to capture memorable
moments throughout California and other
states.
RICK AND JANET NICHOLSON
Glass artists, Rick and Janet Nicholson,
are excited to participate in the 23rd
PlacerArts Studios Tour coming up
November 11, 12, 13. With a strong team
full of fresh energy and experienced wisdom
led by Chris Magasano, the tour will be
better than ever this year. Planning begins
early and preparing the artwork takes
months. The Nicholsons participated in
the very first tour, sponsored by Placer Art
League before the PlacerArts Studios Tour
was born. There were just five artists. Rick
welcomed guests at the studio while Janet
attended an Art Fair in Austin, Texas.
Janet spent her time crouched on top of
her pedestals under a tent while a severe
storm blew through the show - complete
with a tornado watch. That was when they
decided to invest their energy locally and,
as founding members, work with Placer
Arts. They have been on the PlacerArts
Studios Tour every year since the beginning
and have thoroughly enjoyed meeting
interested visitors as they experience the
process of blowing glass. They continue
to work on custom commissions across the
country and internationally, but are still
able to stay home in the studio working
with their daughter, Hannah; friend,
Alana and metal worker, Chris, in the
foothills they love.
MAX REDPATH-KENNEDY
Max Redpath-Kennedy works from life
to create paintings in oil and acrylic and
drawings in pastel and charcoal. Her
portfolio includes still life subjects and her
first love, the human figure. Max's color
palette is clear, pure and vibrant as she
paints layer upon layer, until that "Aha!"
moment when she thinks, "This needs
more red." Max's work process, a fusion
of classical and organic approaches, is
concerned with techniques that allow her
to make sense of what she sees. In a chaotic
world, Max (from Maxfield) is happy to
create work that honors the everyday
goodness of life and the human form,
that is approachable, and that is, simply,
lovely. Along with showing her work in
Placer, Amador, Nevada, and Sacramento
counties, Max has also done commercial
book illustration, film animation for Lee
Mendelsohn Studios, and posters for NBC
TV.
TERRY SHEARN
Terry Shearn - First and foremost, I am a
Maker. I enjoy creating and have always
had a love for the fiber arts, though I
continue to enjoy experimenting with
other mediums such as metal. I have been
working in various forms of Fiber Arts
most of my life. Exploring many areas of
this medium including fine fabrics, pine
needles, wool roving, alpaca, botanical
dyeing, and printing. Working with these
organic, natural materials, from gathering
to finished work is bliss. Including
designing and creating custom costumes/
gowns/outfits for events, weddings, and
theater. I have embraced the botanical
print/dye process that uses plants such as
eucalyptus, walnut & catalpa to transfer
the image of leaf, flower or stem onto fabric
using iron, copper, alum or other mordants
to bind the natural color of the botanical
to the fabric.
ROBERT HILL

Next Generation Artist - Bio not available
MISTY FINDLEY
My name is Misty Findley. I am currently
studying art at Sierra College with
intentions of getting an MFA and teaching.
I greatly enjoy sharing art with others and
seeing how different people approach their
own and others' work. As an artist, my
main interest is in abstracted figurative
works, which I explore using oil paint and
watercolor. I am very passionate about
the human figure and I find a great deal of
enjoyment in playing with all the different
tones and textures that are in skin. My main
intentions tend to be in describing flesh in
a manner that both evokes emotion and
alludes to an ambiguous narrative that the
viewer can put their own experiences onto.
By using a mixture of impasto and detailed
blending, as well as the juxtaposition of
abstraction and representation, I hope to
achieve a type of art that has more of a
visceral realism than a visual one.
SONJA HAMILTON
Sonja Hamilton is a San Francisco born
artist, teacher, and calligrapher. Sonja is
noted for her fluid, concise watercolors -
whether landscapes, seascapes or flowers.
She graduated from San Jose State
University with a BA degree and holds
a Lifetime Special Teaching Credential
in Art, has exhibited widely, and has
paintings in private collections in the
USA, Australia, Canada, Mexico, France,
Japan, and China. Sonja has taught in
adult education since 1967, has conducted
several workshops in Hawaii, California,
Arizona, Nevada, and was an instructor on
a tour of Italy and Greece, the Canadian
Rockies, France, Belgium, Switzerland,
and Spain. Amongst her numerous awards
are several Best of Show, First Awards, and
the Grumbacher Gold Medallion. Sonja's
watercolor (reference) book "Watercolor -
It's only a piece of paper", was published in
2015. "Although I draw and paint in many
media, I find watercolor the most exciting,
spontaneous, and challenging. When I
paint, my cares leave and I become totally
immersed in what I am doing. Watercolor
is exhilarating, yet most relaxing for me - a
great joy. It is who I am."
KATHY SINCLAIR
Auburn artist Kathy Sinclair creates
acrylic and mixed media landscapes and
interiors reflecting light, color, texture, and
perspective. Her work is inspired by her love
of travel, wildlife, the outdoors and history.
Antique wood and copper print blocks,
known as tjaps and traditionally used for
batik, are used to create backgrounds and
borders for some of her paintings. Sinclair's
art ranges from California landscapes,
birds and animals, to the tile designs from
Topkapi Palace in Istanbul.
JEANNIE KAISER
I love the sculptural quality of felt. Using
wool, silk, and fiber, my designs take on a
story as I add complexity with materials
I have spun, dyed, stitched or gleaned.
The heart of each piece is in the magical
transformation that takes place when wool
is "wetted" and the elements fuse into a
I have drawn faces almost all my life. I
came from a family of accomplished artists
who supported my drawing obsession.
face and body out of clay. My first handson
experience with sculpting in clay came
when I was 13 years old. It was a school
science project on the Evolution of Man.
Years later, I tried carving faces out of wood,
but after several attempts, a few stitches and
a lot of wood chips, I went back to drawing.
Then, while at the Laguna Art Festival, I
noticed a sculptor making masks out of
water-based clay. I stood there fascinated,
considering I had tried this in wood. In his
process and having drawn faces, I noticed
the left cheek was too low on the mask. I
watched with curiosity, as I knew very little
about clay. When he noticed the cheek,
he simply reached down, grabbed some
clay and fixed it... just like that! Wow, it
was like a five-alarm fire going off in my
head! When I returned home, I bought
50 pounds of water-based clay and got my
hands back in the mud for the first time in
decades. I didn't have enough knowledge
about clay, the drying or firing process,
not to mention sculpting. I kept creating
busts and they just kept cracking. Several
months later and very frustrated, I was
introduced to Ceramist, Larry Ortiz at Clay
Arts Studio in Auburn, CA.
CANDI MARTIN BAKER
The trick with me is to get the painting
out of my head and onto a canvas, one
painting at a time, in a timely manner. I
like to pull subject matter from the natural
world around me. “Through the Trees”
series started when I realized that here on
Camano, and in much of the Northwest
you are looking at, through or around
trees to the water or the light. Creating
art, it is an ever-changing process for me.
While painting in transparent watercolor
( the Last Light series), I experimented
extensively with color layering through
multiple glazes, sometimes so many layers
that the paper would not hold any more
pigment. The extreme detail in my
watercolor florals came fairly easily because
I am very nearsighted. the flip side is that if
I take off my glasses the world sheds all of
its detail, becoming an abstract of light and
form. I am always seeking a challenge,
a new idea, different perspectives, so much
to learn, to try, let's see where it goes!
SANDRA MAIN
I have always loved creating art. I took
whatever art was offered in school. I
majored in Fine Art at Sacramento State
University and the University of Calif.
at Davis. My inspiration comes from the
Impressionists painters of the late 1800's. I
love bright colors. I work with watercolor,
acrylic, and pastels.
REBECCA MARTINEZ
My passion is surface design and color.
Polymer clay allows me to indulge that
passion! My jewelry, figures, and accessories
incorporate my own polymer clay beads
plus those of glass, wood, pearl, bone and
semiprecious stones from my bead stash.
Shaping and forming the beads requires
quite a bit of handling of the clay. During
the process, in which I feel a little like a
goddess creating stones, the pieces seem
to pick up some good energy from me. My
wish is for you to take this good energy for
your own use when you wear my pieces.
Weekdays I work as a designer for Blue Cat
Studio, Inc. in Auburn, where we specialize
in (interactive) dynamic web design and
print publication. In my spare time,
in Loomis. Eileen has taught for over 15
years and delights in showing techniques
she has learned over the years. Her goal
is for everyone to have a finished piece
of art they can be proud to showcase in
their home. Dream Necklaces and Knotless
across the technique of knot-less netting.
production has shifted and continues to
evolve over time. What began as wearable
art such as scarves, hats, purses, wraps,
and boots has transformed into larger
functioning pieces such as, benches, sofas,
chairs, wall hangings, and blankets. The
process itself has expanded as the duo
continues to experiment, learn, and grow.
However, the beauty as seen by Joan and
Michele continues to be the simplicity
of products and tools involved to create
their art.
MARIA SOTO BIGELOW
I am first and foremost a photographer. I
have been exhibiting in Sacramento and
Placer county galleries since 2003. I have
as friends, family, and pets. My pastels
capture the image or subject matter of the
work but add a twist. My unusual style
comes from being self-taught and my desire
to be free in expressing what I see.
MARY CHRIS HINES
I believe art should be joyful and elicit a
pleasant response from the viewer - be it
from a memory, a new concept or simply
a sigh of relief from all the chaos that can
be today's society. I hope to create joy or
at least a happy feeling in those who view
popular and she was asked to teach classes.
It is easy to do, very portable, and can be
done while sitting and relaxing.
JOAN MAXWELL & MICHELE HURST
Joan-Michele Originals consists of Joan
Maxwell and Michele Hurst who make up
the mother-daughter duo whose interest
and experience in the fiber art and felting
world began in 2005. Their passion and
love for this art form began when Michele
added watercolor and acrylic painting to
my resume, drawing from my photographic
images.
LOUCINDA LAUGHLIN
I love taking the ordinary and turning
it into the extraordinary. I start with
photographs I have taken over the
years and use a colorful palette to create
my interpretation of the photo. My
inspiration comes from travels to Europe
and throughout the United States as well
my work and make their day a brighter one
finds the creative process a way to have an
to sign her paintings using small writing
that does not distract from the work itself.
Nancy paints for the joy of it and hopes
that her paintings might bring some fun or
SUE FEGLEY
Cuffs of wisdom, that's my bag. I make
leather cuffs, hand-dyed with non-toxic
dyes, each one unique. Each has a stamped
saying on it and an embellishment in
metal, stone or glass that illustrates the
saying. It's a way to wear your mantra on
your sleeve, to remind yourself of your
values and goals, and be stylish at the same
time. I love working at my table to create
each piece, thinking of how happy my cuff
will make the wearer.
and inspire the community to see the
beauty in what we eat and recognize how
fortunate Placer County residents are to
Her current work is exhibited at the High
Thien Dao's ceramic pieces have a wide
range, from evocative female abstract
to the realistic sculptures and mask to
the colorful whimsical fish. Whether on
KEITH SMITH
I became enthralled with the use of wax
and the Indonesian batik copper printing
blocks known as 'tjaps' at the World Batik
Conference held at the Massachusetts
College of Art in 2005. The cauldron
of wax reminds me of the foul smelling
concoctions I used to cook up in my past
life as an organic chemist. Since then I have
avidly collected tjaps, had more custom
made in Indonesia, and have gradually
LINDA GREEN
Linda Green has worked as a figurative
abstract acrylic artist for the past two
decades. Significant works include her
"Passion of People" series and her 2009
"Women at the Window" series. Linda's
background is rooted in watercolor which
influences her current painting process.
Artistically inquisitive, Linda has recently
begun exploring the interplay of ceramics
and oil painting allowing her to express her
thoughts in a new series of works, "Behind
the Chain Link Fence". This series will
upon completion, incorporate ceramics,
improved my skills in the use of wax, tjaps,
and dye to create bold colorful designs.
In 2015 I spent a month in Yogyakarta,
Indonesia honing my skills with Agus
Ismoyo and Nia Fliam, two well know

atik artists. I love to use the traditional
techniques and tools of Indonesian Batik
to create modern and almost abstract
effects. I sell my work through the Old
Town Gallery in Auburn California.
MERRIDEE JOAN SMITH
I am a chemist who is also enthralled with
fiber and plants. These combined interests
have resulted in my second career in fiber
arts: silk painting, botanical printing
and felt making. As a silk painter, my
particular passion is painting flowers, as
it is an excellent medium for capturing
their colors, patterns and iridescence. I
am honored to have been designated a
Master Silk Painter by my peers at Silk
Painters International. Botanical printing
is so satisfying, as I am able to use the
natural materials around me (and a little
chemistry) to create beautiful cloth. As a
felt maker, I am thrilled with the tactile
quality of the wool and other fibers, and
love that felt making is an ancient and very
usable medium. I am privileged to work at
the Old Library Art Studios (OLAS) in
Auburn, California. My work can be seen
at the Auburn Old Town Gallery and in
the Big Island Glass Gallery in Honokaa,
Hawaii.
JEANNETTE PHILLIPS
Influenced as a young child by the beauty of
stained glass windows in churches, I would
be drawn to glass art as an adult. I started
making traditional leaded stained-glass
windows but soon fell in love with the idea
and process of fusing glass pieces together
in a kiln with temperatures reaching
1,450 degrees or higher, anxiously waiting
to open the lid after firing is complete to
find the radiant colors of the treasures
within. I work hard to manipulate sharp,
unforgiving glass to create unique pieces
that will excite the viewer so that they ask
themselves...how did she do that!
SANDY DELEHANTY
Sandy Delehanty has been exhibiting
in galleries since the early 1990's and
has had 23 solo shows, 4 two-person
shows, and many more group shows.
She is represented by Sparrow Gallery
in Sacramento, Art Obsessions Gallery
in Truckee, CA and Auburn Old Town
Gallery in Auburn, CA. Sandy paints in
watercolors, oils and loves to draw in ink.
Her subjects range from abstracts to zebras
but she is best known for her exuberant
flower paintings and whimsical animal
portraits. Her paintings are in private
collections in the US, France, Italy and
South Africa and in corporate collections
including 45 paintings in the University
of California Davis Medical Center.
Sandy was awarded Signature Status by
the California Watercolor Association in
2011. Her paintings have won numerous
awards in international, national and local
juried competitions.
TAYLOR TURNER
"My best friend's name is Angela. I've
known her for many years now and always
wanted to draw her but I never knew
how. Every time I tried the image seemed
flat, lifeless, and fake. Until a song finally
sparked something inside me. I realized
that I wanted to portray what she meant to
me, not just what she looked like. Angela
is the strongest person I know. She's
beautiful, courageous, and tenacious. She
lives her life freely, hunting and running
free. I tried to invoke these feelings with
this piece by using bold colors. I tried
conveying a feeling of movement and life
through a slightly impressionistic style of
realism in this fantasy dreamscape."
ERIC JUST
Over the past fifty or so years I have loved
watercolor. More recently I have made
a serious effort to increase the frequency
with which I paint. In combining my
interest in aircraft and landscapes I have
created more than 200 new paintings over
the last 2 years. Watercolor is a naturally
spontaneous medium, which is great for
landscapes. The challenge I have given
myself is to achieve enough control so that
there is a degree of realism in the aircraft
paintings. My paintings are not intended
to have any deep hidden meaning. I simply
want them to reflect my enthusiasm for

watercolor through two of my favorite things. Landscapes and
airplanes!
cott Pruett is a legend in the
racing world there is no doubt
about it. When he and his family
turned their sights to wine he did
it the right way. Hiring the best
in the business to consult with him to
produce one of the highest rated Syrah’s
in the word for 2012.
To produce a Wine Spectator 90 point
wine is a dream for so many wineries.
Pruette Vineyards seems to only produce
90 point wines with 24 of the 26 wines
they have produced receiving over 90
point ratings.
Scott went through the beginning with
me talking about hiring the best soil
analysts from Napa.
“We tested for over a year, the consultant
that we hired said if you can’t grow great
wine here you can’t grow it anywhere,”
explains Scott
Not only was this consultant correct,
Pruett vineyard in 2012 and 2014 their
Championship Cuvee received 96 points
and 2014 was the highest rated Syrah
in California and tied for #1 in the
world. No winery in the Sierra Foothills
Appellation has ever been rated higher
than Pruett Vineyards.
after crush before the grapes hit any barrels the wine
was fantastic, once they had some aging in toasted
French Oak barrels I could tell that this wine was going
to be special.
When asked how he was able to get to this level so
quickly. He smiles. “I feel lucky to have access to these
mentors, that have helped me to be patient. In Car
Racing, your measured in seconds. In Wine Making,
our measured in years. Racing opened doors and
gave me access to the best in the business. Some like
Bill[Harlan] are big fans.”
Scott and his family truly produce an experience in a bottle. If you
ever have a chance to join his wine club this would be the one to
join. Given his successful career in the racing world, it is apparent
to me that Scott knows how to win in any environment.
Sitting and reflecting on my meeting with Scott I feel truly honored
to have been given the opportunity to spend some time with him.
I have never met someone that is on a world-class level in two
completely different industries yet be so humble and kind. When I
look back at this moment in my life ten, twenty years from now I
know I will feel a sense of awe that I was given a gift to meet Scott
Pruett and see him completely enthralled in his craft.
DESTINATION BREWERY IN NEWCASTLE
hat if you could enjoy a locally brewed beer in
the very barn it was crafted in? Or eat meals
with herbs and vegetables from the garden
planted next to the one-acre hop field? Well
you can, since Patric Hillenbrand turned his beautiful, brown,
2,400 sq. ft. barn into a brewery, to give a farm-to-glass offering
of beers, on his very own 13 acres dubbed Hillenbrand Farmhaus
Brewery.
Five taps comprise his menu, which is characterized dominantly
by a farmhouse ale touch and low bittering and ABV units. His
Farmhaus Saison welcomes you with the traditional funk and
wet hay, but also has lemon zest and toasted coriander notes.
The Sour Passion makes a very tart treat with its real passion
fruit puree and overwhelming (in a good way) aroma of passion
fruit coming off the top. An unfiltered pineapple IPA will
refresh your taste buds once you arrive, as the Juicy Fruit brewed
New England style truly packs the sweetness you crave, as well
as gives you the most ABVs (at 6.2%) of the five. The Blonde
Rabbit also holds impressions of farmhouse ale, but the You’re
Killing Me S’mores, a milk brown stout on nitro, wafts of craveworthy
marshmallows and rich chocolate flavor rounding off
the menu out with a sit-by-the-fire sipper.
Hillenbrand bought the Newcastle property 11 years ago, having
grown up in Loomis. His journey to owning and operating a
brewery started with a trip to Portland, Oregon, with a visit
to Labrewatory, where he had the chance to operate their
commercial brewing equipment. This small chance intrigued
him to explore the realm of funky beers, like farmhouse saisons
and sours, and the investigation birthed into an idea: why
not brew farmhouse ales in his own barn? Two years ago the
transformation began, and the gathering place, with seating
outside under twinkle lights complete with a pond, miniature
donkeys, and a green tractor, or inside next to the five barrels
and four fermentation tanks, is now open for those who want to
relax on the farm after a long day.
But what Hillenbrand strives for is more than just great drinks.
He aims to pair his brews with similarly great food and bring
in a chef in spring 2018 to create weekly-rotating, truly farmto-fork
plates with produce from his own garden. The result:
a whole mouthful of experiences that brings attention to the
whole meal. He has already embarked on his vision, as he will
soon conduct the Beer Maker’s Dinner at Cibo 7 Ristorante
Wine & Spirits in Roseville alongside their Executive Chef Ray
Silva on Oct. 26, where a four-course meal will be served and
paired with beers in front of diners, for an intimate experience
between cook, brewer, and attendees. It resumes the next week
in November, and depending on popularity, the event may
repeat in the future, so get your tickets soon.
With a little inspiration from Portland, a convenient barn to
brew in, and a love for great food to go with it, Patric Hillenbrand
is designing a new drinking experience with a country home
vibe for beer hunters far and wide.
