The Auburn State Recreation Area Map is a collaborative effort
between PARC and the community of American River experts and
dedicated volunteers who are stewards of the Auburn SRA.
The Auburn State Recreation Area*, an
extraordinary recreational, historical and
scenic gem, is located in the Sierra Nevada
Foothills along 48 miles of the North and
Middle Forks of the American River
stretching from Auburn to Colfax and
Foresthill. The Auburn SRA provides high
quality open space, wildlife habitat and
diverse recreational opportunities deep in
California’s legendary Gold Country. The
American River’s rich cultural tapestry
includes influences from the Maidu
Nisenan Indians, Spanish settlers and Gold
Rush miners. The river was named Rio de
Gold Rush River History
In 1848 the discovery of gold by James
Marshall at Sutter’s Mill on the
South Fork in Coloma, spread a
Gold Rush to the North and Middle
Forks. The “world rushed in” to pan
and dig the precious metal from the
river and canyons. Both the North and
Middle Forks were intensively mined,
and sizeable towns and camps grew up within the
canyons and along the rivers to support the
mining operations. Today, the supply roads and
trails the miners used are the nucleus of the
recreational trail system in the Auburn State
Recreation Area. The Gold Rush Mining
Museum is located in the historic Auburn Depot,
(see Local Museums) and offers a glimpse into
Placer County’s Gold Rush history.
los Americanos by the Spanish. Today, the
pristine river and canyon trails offer
visitors a variety of recreational activities Mountain Quarries
to responsibly enjoy. Major recreational Railroad Bridge
uses include hiking, mountain biking, The Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge, also
known locally as “No Hands Bridge,” is the most
horseback riding, whitewater boating,
recognizable historical monument in the Confluence
area. The Pacific Portland Cement Compa-
fishing, swimming, gold panning,
picnicking, and much more.
ny completed the 170 foot long, triple-arch span
Native American
concrete bridge in 1912. At that time it was the
COMMITMENT TO AUTHENTICITY
Liu Mandarin Kitchen hand-rolls 800-1200 dumplings every day
his has to be your next dining experience in
Auburn. Sunny Liu has something special in her
beautiful restaurant in Old Town Auburn located
next door to one of the hottest new businesses in
Auburn, The Pour Choice.
I was invited one morning to witness just how they make
their dumplings at Liu Mandarin Kitchen. I was quite
surprised at how fast they were at making these, but the taste
was something that I now dream about.
“We make 800-1200 dumplings every day. Hand-made is the
only way,” explains Sunny.
This recipe has been handed down to her from generations
with her father and grandfather teaching her the process.
They come in Pork, Seafood, Beef, and Vegetable. I tried
Sunny’s favorite the Pork.
To say that this is good is an understatement. These
dumplings are perfect, the best that I have ever had in fact.
At first, I didn’t dip the dumpling in the sauce, but when I
did everything changed.
That sauce is so good. I wanted to drink the rest of it straight
out of the dish but thought it would get all over me.
“The sauce is my secret recipe; it’s what makes our dumpling
so good. Customers love,” says Sunny.
If you are looking for something different and have never
been to Sunny’s restaurant, it is worth it. They believe in
hand-making all their food, and often it is made to order so
don’t expect this to be a typical fast food Asian restaurant.
The dumplings alone are worth every minute you have to
wait for them.
NEW CHEF, NEW MENU
We re-visit Tap & Vine
hen we originally did the story on Tap and
Vine in Auburn California it was on their
opening night. I decided to come back for
a visit and see what is new since I had heard there was a
new chef and menu.
“My approach to this menu is that good food starts with
good ingredients first and foremost. My style has always
been taking rustic old world preparations and trying to
add something new or modern and put my personal stamp
on the dishes.” explains Chef Thompson
The pricing seems to be on the same plane as owner
Addison Brown hoped to keep it. With large portions and
good quality I can see why this restaurant is still going
strong even in the slow months.
The three main dishes, pictured above, where very good.
Duck Breast with a Pumpkin Mole sauce, Koji aged Short
Ribs, nad a Maple Glazed Fried Chicken.
“Koji is a new ingredient in my arsenal and it’s a lot of
fun playing with it to find new ways to use proteins and
vegetables but I’d say my favorite ingredient overall is
seafood. So many different types of fish and sea creatures
I find a ton of inspiration in. “ explains Chef Thompson
With locally sourced ingredients from farms like Hillview
Farms in Auburn they do their best to support local first.
There are 12 beers on tap featuring some local breweries
as well as some of Addison’s favorites. They specialize in
Craft Cocktails that change often to keep it fresh and
creative.
“Thank you Auburn for the support and positive feedback
We pushed the edge to offer Auburn something different
and we are grateful for the community support.” says
Addison
If you haven’t yet tried Tap and Vine in Auburn it is worth
a trip. They did a beautiful job on the remodel of the space
13
to create a warm industrial space
with stained concrete floors and a
stunning bar.
Bio on Chef Thompson
Chef Darren Thompson made his
way through the Sacramento culinary
scene during the farm to fork and
slow food movements, learning from
some of the region’s most influential
chefs. He has been at the helm
of several kitchens from Auburn,
Roseville, Sacramento, all the way
to Yolo County’s wine country. His
appreciation for fine ingredients and
mastering technique is what drives
him forward in his career and his
love of creation and nostalgia are
what fill the pages of his menus.
SKINNY CHICKEN PARMESAN
Ingredients
3 chicken breasts halved longways to make 6 portions
2 Tbs olive oil
Spike seasoning
1/2 onion - diced
1 shallot - diced
4 (medium) garlic cloves - crushed
2 cans no salt added diced tomatoes
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp celery seed
1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
4 Tbsp basil, Chiffonade into whispy slices
1 cup grape tomatoes, slice in 1/3s
6 oz part-skim mozzarella cheese
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350. Cut each chicken breast in half
lengthwise to make 6 equal portions. Season both sides
of the chicken breasts with Spike Seasoning. In a large
skillet - we like cast iron, heat 2 Tbs olive oil and sear the
chicken breasts on both sides. They don’t have to cook
all the way through, but come close. Remove the chicken
from the skillet and set aside. Over medium-high heat,
saute the onion, shallot, and garlic, use a little water to
deglaze the pan. Once browned, add the canned tomatoes
and heat. Add Italian seasoning, celery seed, and red
pepper and heat through. Add the chicken breasts back
into the tomatoes and bake for 15 minutes. Sprinkle
with 1/4C grated mozzarella and broil for 3 more minutes
until the cheese is melted and golden (watch carefully
to prevent burning.) Serve the chicken with the sauce,
sprinkled with basil and fresh grape tomatoes. We love
it over zoodles. Spiralize the zucchini and gently squeeze
with paper towels to remove moisture. The heat of the
chicken and sauce will heat the zoodles. Weight Watchers
THE PEPPER FESTIVAL SPICY PEPPER BEEF SANDWICH
This sandwich is easy to make and even easier to make disappear off your plate. No cooking involved and can be made
in 10 minutes (6 if you’re really hungry). It also features peppers in several forms. There are a few ingredients that don’t
list a measurement since this sandwich really lends itself well to using your own taste. For instance: You’re an adult…
you know how much roast beef you’d like on your sandwich. This recipe makes one sandwich. Use judgement/taste for
more than one.
Ingredients:
• Dutch Crunch Roll - From your bakery. You can also use a Jalapeño-Cheese roll if
you can find it.
• Roast Beef - Don’t go cheap. Go to the deli department and get the fresh, thick, good
stuff. Trust us on this.
• 1/4 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil - You don’t want “experienced” olive oil on this
sandwich.
• Sliced Pepper Jack Cheese - Again, don’t go cheap here. Get the good stuff from the
deli department.
• Crushed Garlic - Crushed garlic in a jar works here, but if you don’t mind making it
fresh, do it.
• Roasted Red Peppers - We like to use Mezzeta’s Roasted Red Bell Peppers. They
are marinated in the jar and are harvested and jarred within 24 hours at their facility in
Napa Valley.
• 1 Tbs Sriracha Sauce - Or to taste.
• 4 Tbs Mayo - Or to taste.
• 1 Tbs Smoked Paprika - This isn’t an ingredient to skip or substitute with regular
Paprika. Go get it on the spice aisle. It really makes the taste of this sandwich pop.
Plus, Paprika is made from dried sweet peppers!
• Sliced Hot Jalapeños - From a jar works great. Check the jar and make sure that you
are buying hot jalapeños. Most jalapeños in a jar at the store are very mild unless it
says hot on the label.
Directions:
1. Mix olive oil, crushed garlic and smoked paprika in a bowl.
2. Add roast beef to mixture and completely coat with mixture.
3. Cut and spread open bread on plate.
4. Mix mayo and sriracha, spread onto both sides of bread.
5. Place meat onto both sides of bread.
6. Place slices of pepper jack cheese into sandwich to taste.
7. Place red peppers into sandwich to taste.
8. Place sliced jalapeños into sandwich to taste.
9. EAT!
Heat Options:
It’s easy to make this sandwich without its spiciness (but why would you want to?).
Simply cut out the sriracha sauce and any trace of jalapeños and replace the pepper
jack cheese with another type of cheese. The roasted red peppers and the paprika are
mild.
The pepper festival is a new event coming to Auburn in June of this year and will be held at the
Gold Country Fairgrounds.

NEVER GIVE UP
Local motivational speaker, realtor, and life coach takes on Spartan
Susan Teixeira has that quality about her. That never give
in, never say I can’t, determination to the end. I heard
about her story of not just getting in shape at the young age
of 50, she wanted to take on the mother of them all. The
Spartan.
Accordingly to wikipedia
Spartan Race is a series of obstacle races of varying distance
and difficulty ranging from 3 miles to marathon distances.
They are held in US and have been franchised to 30
countries including Canada, South Korea, Australia and
several European countries. The series include the Spartan
Sprint, the Super Spartan, the Spartan Beast, and the Ultra
Beast. Spartan Race also has a military series, hosted on
military bases.
Obstacles
Spartan Sprint (3+ miles of obstacle racing, 20+ obstacles),
the Spartan Super (8+ miles, 25+ obstacles), the Spartan
Beast (13+ miles, 30+ obstacles), and the Ultra Beast
(26+ miles, 60+ obstacles – one of two marathon obstacle
courses along with Mudderthon). The obstacles themselves
also vary from race to race. Frequently presented obstacles
can include a fire jump, climbing under barbed wire, wall
climbing, mud crawling,the “over-under-through” spear
throw, rope climb, heavy object carries, “Herculean Hoist”,
“Tyrolean Traverse”, monkey bars, Traversal Wall, Hobie
Hop, Slippery Wall, a zig-zag log jump, steep mud climbs,
tractor pulls, underwater submerging below walls, Atlas
carries, tire flips, stump balances, rope swing, and the now
discontinued Gladiator Arena.
Susan trained every day multiple times a day to train for
this event. Her favorite pictured is her log runs down to
China Bar and back up. In less than six months Susan got
in shape to compete in the Spartan Lake Tahoe and did
quite well. If you are in need of motivation follow her on
facebook for her Monday Motivations.
MY FIRST (AND LAST) CROSS COUNTRY RACE
This past weekend my friend who
let’s just say we need our blog “Stuff
Jeni talks Kim into doing,” Kim and I,
did a mountain biking race at Folsom
Lake. The races are a well-known
series put on by TBF Racing that takes
place throughout the year. Now I am
an Enduro Racer and shuttle lover.
This means I can climb but it is never
timed, or I ride in a vehicle to get to
the top of the fun downhill. Well
back in October, I decided I should
at least do one cross country type
of mountain biking race to help my
Enduro training. That is when I made
Kim sign up as well. Because why suffer
alone? Well, fast forward through the
holidays and Lasik Surgery. Of course, I
have complications which lead to this
Christmas cookie not setting one foot
on a bike. I tried to get a refund, but
it wasn’t worth it with the transfer fee.
Kim and I went for a long grueling ride
the day before the race both wanting
the other one to say, “Hey, how about
we NOT embarrass ourselves tomorrow
and sleep in?” Neither one of us did so
there we were putting our nameplates
on our big bikes in a sea of sleek, light
bikes and spandex the next morning.
The term big bike means we have
more suspension so more bounce and
beefy tires. Nothing light or effortless
going on. Also, we wear flat shoes. This
means we do not clip into our pedals.
Now if you are a cyclist clips versus
flats is right up there with the gun
war. There are very strong opinions
regarding racing in clips due to the
belief it can make a rider pedal stronger
and faster. Well, a pro Downhill racer
blew that theory out of the water when
he won the Enduro World Series in flat
pedals last year.
I can barely coordinate an aerobics
move in the gym, there is no way I am
securing my feet to a pedal, and the
only way out is to think fast enough to
unsecure it when you need it. I like my
face, thank you very much.
Anyway, at the starting line, Kim and I
sheepishly hung out in the back. While
we were waiting a woman recognized
me from MTB Experience. She found
out I was in her age group and I am
pretty sure I saw a light flick on. Like
she was taking me down. I quickly told
her, “This is all you today. We don’t
know what we are doing out in here.”
We started, and she took off.
I was warned it was a bit of a cluster
at the beginning. It reminded me of
2 triathlons I did were you are in a
human blender of people swimming.
Hence giving up triathlons because
life’s too short for that kind of panic.
As soon as we hit the first hill, I passed
three girls. I was pretty shocked by
this but kept on trekking. Then I
caught quite a few people in the first
rocky section. They were trying to go
around. Well uphill be damned, but I
got the downhill stuff. I took the inside
line and zoomed right past about four
people. One was the woman from the
starting line. She yelled out, “I knew
you would catch me on the downhill!”
I laughed and assured her she would
catch me on the uphill.
The rest of the race was spent trying
to navigate the bottlenecking on any
technical section, all the kid carnage,
and passing. I am not aggressive on
the trail, but I got someone on my tail
which really wants to beat me, so I
had to pass. I tried being nice, “Hey.
Hi. Um on your left?” “Oh okay never
mind, how about on your right?” “Oh
thank you so much! Have a great race!”
The kids clipping pedals on rocks and
being clipped in was hard to see. Soooo
many crashes. It seemed everyone was
okay, but there was going to be some
serious bruising.
I came through and Ellen, the chaser,
came not long after me. We had a great
time letting each other know we used
one another to have a great race. She is
a powerhouse and I admire all the long
distance cycling she does. Poor Kim
had to help a girl who crashed pretty
badly. Then she dropped her chain so
had to spend time getting it unstuck.
She still pulled off 1st in her age group!
It was only her but who cares- SHE
SHOWED UP AND FINISHED!
Later when I checked the results, I
realized I was the first female finisher.
For some reason that meant more than
just winning my age group. It meant
this old mom passed all the fit girls
and women out there from the back
all the way to the front. This goes to
show; it’s not always about fitness- I am
very out of shape- it is about knowing
how to ride your bike. I can navigate
my bike and tougher terrain very well.
It makes me happy that I partnered
with Paige Ramsey to lead all our
skill-building clinics, as this is truly
the most important part of bringing
the mountain biking experience to
women. It makes a difference.
Flat pedals and cushy bikes for the win!
Welcome to the American River
The Auburn State Recreation Area*, an
extraordinary recreational, historical and
scenic gem, is located in the Sierra Nevada
Foothills along 48 miles of the North and
Middle Forks of the American River
stretching from Auburn to Colfax and
Foresthill. The Auburn SRA provides high
quality open space, wildlife habitat and
diverse recreational opportunities deep in
California’s legendary Gold Country. The
American River’s rich cultural tapestry
includes influences from the Maidu
Nisenan Indians, Spanish settlers and Gold
Rush miners. The river was named Rio de
los Americanos by the Spanish. Today, the
pristine river and canyon trails offer
visitors a variety of recreational activities
to responsibly enjoy. Major recreational
uses include hiking, mountain biking,
horseback riding, whitewater boating,
fishing, swimming, gold panning,
picnicking, and much more.
River History
A RE A M A P
The Auburn State Recreation Area Map is a collaborative effort
between PARC and the community of American River experts and
dedicated volunteers who are stewards of the Auburn SRA.
The acorn grinding rocks in the
Confluence area are visible reminders
of the many Maidu Nisenan Indian village sites
that flourished along the American River and the
canyon rim. The Maidu Nisenan fished for
salmon, hunted game, and gathered acorns. Both
edible and medicinal plants were collected as well.
Their rich seasonal calendar marked time with
“Big Time” dance ceremonies in the village
round house called the “k’um”. The Maidu
Interpretive Center, located in
Roseville (916-774-5934), provides
programs and exhibits that
illustrate the connection between
the people, their culture, and the
natural world.
Gold Rush River History
In 1848 the discovery of gold by James
Marshall at Sutter’s Mill on the
South Fork in Coloma, spread a
Gold Rush to the North and Middle
Forks. The “world rushed in” to pan
and dig the precious metal from the
river and canyons. Both the North and
Middle Forks were intensively mined,
and sizeable towns and camps grew up within the
canyons and along the rivers to support the
mining operations. Today, the supply roads and
trails the miners used are the nucleus of the
recreational trail system in the Auburn State
Recreation Area. The Gold Rush Mining
Museum is located in the historic Auburn Depot,
(see Local Museums) and offers a glimpse into
Placer County’s Gold Rush history.
Mountain Quarries
Railroad Bridge
The Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge, also
known locally as “No Hands Bridge,” is the most
recognizable historical monument in the Confluence
area. The Pacific Portland Cement Company
completed the 170 foot long, triple-arch span
concrete bridge in 1912. At that time it was the
longest concrete arch railroad bridge in the world.
The bridge and connecting rail line were built to
haul limestone from the Portland Cement Quarry,
located a mile up river on the Middle Fork, to the
Southern Pacific main line in Auburn. In 2004
the Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge was
added to the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2014, the bridge was designated
California Historic Landmark #1051.
LOCAL ARTIST WITH BIG DREAMS
Back from college this local artist is quickly making a name for herself
ocal artist Ali Futrell graduated from the San
Fransico Art Institute last May and is quickly
making headway in Auburn. Her classes fill up
quickly, and her clients love her.
“I love to teach and do at least one class every month from
sign painting to Rock Mandella,” says Ali
Ali has also taken on some commission work. I got the
chance to meet up with her in her studio space and was
stunned by the use of color and creativity of the paintings.
She first styles a photo shoot then works off that picture for a
much larger, colorful and in-depth piece.
When asked what she hopes for in the foreseeable future she
talked about a space for artists to gather and create.
“Wharehouse style welcoming artist doing workshops,
events, meetings, and studio space,” says Ali
Whether you are into art or not when you meet Ali there is
nothing but gratitude. She genuinely feels lucky to be doing
what she loves.
“I think this comes from my Art teacher in high school. I
would not have gotten into the Art Institute without his
help.” Explains Ali
If you are looking for a local artist, I think you will love
Ali’s work. She can be found online via her Instagram pages
alifutrell.art or she has a booth at most of the festivals in the
surrounding area.

MEET MARIE AN AWARD-WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER
Unique portrait photographer born and raised in Auburn
eeting that person, you have looked up to for
so long has been truly inspiring for me. This
happened twice within a year. Joe Dondelinger,
the image on my first cover, and now the immensely talented
Marie Clark of Permanent Glimpse Photography.
I have been following her for years on Instagram, and her
portrait photography is breathtaking. Traditional schooling
has not tainted her eye, everything she knows is self-taught.
“When I go into a shoot with a client my goal is to capture
their true-self.” Says Clark
When asked how she decided to do this for a living she
reflected back to her senior year in high school.
“I took my first class on film processing in 1999, the teacher
Kim Brown Morgan awarded me the photography student of
the year that year. I remember having a reflective moment
in the square[at Placer High School] that I was going to be a
photographer,” says Clark
Marie is fantastic at styling a shot. Editorials, or planned
shoots with models, makeup, and styled clothes are her form
of art. These happen to be some of my favorite photos from
Marie. The level of detail and the creativity is stunning, like
using colored smoke and confetti to name just a few.
“Having been trained in film photography, I was completely
uninterested in Digital photography and assumed I would
never need or use one ever in my life. Until, Jason Lee of Lee
photo [a dear friend and wonderful mentor] entered me in
a raffle without my knowing it, my name was drawn for the
grand prize... a digital camera. Never taking a digital photo
class or ever formally learning photoshop or how to handle
digital files I plugged away at years of trial and error and selfencouraging.”
Explains Clark
I feel blessed to have met Marie. She continues to inspire me
to learn something new and try a new technique. Although
portrait photography is not my strength, her creativity is
helping me look at the photos I take differently and to try
something different. Thank you, Marie.

PIECING IT TOGETHER SINCE 1978
Monroe transmission has been helping their customers for over 40 years
onroe Transmission has been a staple in the
greater Auburn Area for over 40 years. The
original business started in 1966 but moved
to Auburn in 1976 and then to Newcastle in their current
location in 1995. If that is not enough, they also have
another location in Yuba City that opened in 2000.
Walking through the shop, you quickly understand that
there is a level of quality and craftsmanship that goes into
every job.
“Since we have been here so long it’s amazing that we are
now servicing customers grand children’s’ cars,” explains
Barbara Monroe
This is a true family business. Although Bud is retired now,
his sons Don and Dwayne took over the family business. Don
runs the Yuba City shop, and Dwayne with wife Barbara run
the Newcastle shop.
“What makes this special is that we grew up here. Don and
Dwayne graduated Placer High, and I graduated from Forest
Lake,” says Barbara
If that all is not enough, it is quite impressive how long some
of their employees have been working for them. Several have
been with the same company for 31 years. Rich has been a
service writer for Monroe Transmission going on 22 years.
Yuba city, open for just 18 years, has several employees that
have been employed for over 15 years each.
Monroe Transmission does a ton of work for local general
repair shops in the surrounding area as well. If you are in
need of some work done to your transmission look no further.
You will not find a more honest, hardworking and talented
group of people to care for your car.

“This is a great shop! I had Corey and his team at Smitty’s do some preservation work on my
original paint 63 single cab. The quality of work done is beyond any of my expectations. It
had a lot of rust on the rockers, treasure chest floors, outriggers, jack points, battery tray, and
some rear corner spots. The metal was repaired/replaced and blended into the original paint.
Many thanks Smitty’s.” Zach
