THE
BEGINNING:
The story begins with Ismail Moosa, the original patriarch and founder of
what was to become Khaliques, established a gentleman’s outfitter in 1940
in the capital city of Pretoria – South Africa.
Catering for the local businessmen, the business thrived, offering a
selection of business suits and footwear.
1952
Then, in 1952 a law passed by the white apartheid national government,
known as the Group Areas Act, as promulgated. An oppressive system
of social engineering which saw people of different race groups being
moved to designated sights – many far from their places of residence and
business.
Ismail Moosa, was forced to sell his thriving business and relocate.
In 1952 – they moved to Vrededrop in Johannesburg, an area designated to
mostly Malay and Indian traders, part of a larger area known as Pageview,
or as it became known, Fietas. Here a new business which supplied baby
and infantwear and accessories was established.
1974
Soon after Ismail Moosa started retailing his passion, menswear, which
led to his establishing ‘The Suit Centre’ in 1974, which became ‘Khaliques’.
He then went on to build a successful business, driven by his passion for
menswear.
He understood his customers and over time, he built strong relationships.
His strong sense for the needs of the community was undeniably
ingrained in his son Khalik, who as a child spent his time learning from his
father. The values instilled in him at the time remain the cornerstone of
the business today.
1980
In 1980 Khaliques relocated to a designated retail business complex which
became known as the Oriental Plaza which still stands today, in mid-town
Johannesburg.
The name Khaliques originated from Ismail’s son, and when Ismail died in
1986, Khalik armed with the lessons learnt from his father, and a passion
for menswear, took over the business and continued to deliver on the
service, value and quality promise which to this day remain the cornerstone
of the brand. He went on to build onto the relationships, built by his father in
the garment industry and the loyal customers who kept on returning. Khalik
was joined by his son’s Mohammed Faeez and younger brother, Ismail.
1999
In time the dynamics of Johannesburg began to change.
Business started to migrate into the North, where Khaliques opened
a second store in Sandown, Sandton, in the heart of the new central
business district, close to the newly located Johannesburg Stock
Exchange, the largest commodities exchange in Africa, situated in the
heart of Africa’s most dynamic financial district.
2016
Khaliques continued to expand with a store in Cedar Square and the Mall
of Africa in 2016.
Mohammed has overseen the expansion of the business and the brand.
A firm believer in commitment to marketing investment and disciplined
brand and reputation management, with a focus on businessmen who
understand that quality and value for money go hand in hand with
service. Understanding customer service needs, each store has its
own on premises tailoring and ‘made to measure’ services. He has also
recognized that the business needs to meet the future lead on innovation
and technology.
PRESENT
Khaliques currently has agreements with Bally of Switzerland to distribute
men’s footwear and leatherwear, as well as premium leatherwear from
Piquadro in Milan.
Khaliques also offer the most comprehensive collections of men’s suits
and Businesswear from houses such as Loro Piana and Vitale Barberis
E-COMMERCE:
The business has recognized that e-commerce will play an important
role in the retail of the future. The digital and technological distribution is
managed by Khalik’s youngest son, Ismail who has his eye firmly focused
on technology and meeting those demands and challenges.
Khaliques has an experienced team of financial and logistics
professionals who facilitate the smooth processing of all administration
