DEAR FRIENDS:<br />
Not too long ago, I was running up to my office<br />
when I heard shouting coming from the Center<br />
downstairs. Panic arose as I got back to the main<br />
floor and saw a large circle of people huddled<br />
together. But as I got closer to the commotion,<br />
I was relieved to see laughter and dancing. One<br />
voice surfaced above the others. It was Reggie, a<br />
regular guest at the Pope Francis Center for many<br />
years. Reggie, now in his late sixties, had landed on<br />
the street due to mental illness. “Never again!” he<br />
yelled, “Never again.”<br />
In his right hand — held way above his head —<br />
were the keys to his new apartment. When he<br />
finally ran out of breath and with his friends settled<br />
around him, Reggie fell into a chair and said, “I will<br />
never be homeless again.” And he began to sob.<br />
It is the dream that our guests tell us about so often:<br />
Someday, somehow, they will hold their own set of<br />
keys to a place they can call home, never to sleep on<br />
the cold concrete or in doorways again.<br />
There is profound shame among those who find<br />
themselves homeless. We may miss it in their<br />
eyes when we pass them on the street, but no one<br />
feels okay with being homeless — no matter how<br />
profound the mental illness or other challenges they<br />
face. All too often, they feel worthless, unwanted,<br />
expendable, and — worst of all — invisible.<br />
We may not yet be able to help every single guest get<br />
keys to their own place, but we do provide a place they<br />
can feel at home. Because of you, we can offer those in<br />
need the keys of hope and healing, unlocking human<br />
potential by treating every individual as worthy of love<br />
and dignity. Over and over again, I am awestruck by<br />
the goodness of our volunteers and friends who show<br />
such incredible generosity to our brothers and sisters<br />
in need. It is here at the Pope Francis Center where<br />
simple acts of kindness are the keys that transform lives<br />
and unlock the mystery of Jesus of Nazareth and his<br />
unconditional love.<br />
This past year has seen a great increase in the number<br />
of homeless that come to us in need. We have been<br />
able to match this need with a great deal of growth<br />
and development in our ministry. This happened only<br />
because of the generosity of you, our friends and<br />
companions in mission. What a privileged place it is<br />
for me to witness the overwhelming love and concern<br />
for our brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness.<br />
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have<br />
handed our guests the keys of compassion and hope.<br />
May God bless you abundantly for your kindness.<br />

The Pope Francis Center held its inaugural fundraising dinner on<br />
April 27th at Penna’s of Sterling. The event, which sold out in just<br />
over two weeks, was an enormous success, raising over $110,000<br />

A STORY<br />
OF HOPE<br />
THIRTY UNDER 30<br />
This year we helped more than a dozen of our guests<br />
transition from life on the streets to stable housing. Each<br />
of these individuals experienced homelessness for a unique<br />
set of reasons, often including a combination of mental<br />
health issues, struggles with addiction, and a profound lack<br />
of trust in societal norms after experiencing incarceration.<br />
Here is one of their stories.<br />
With her boisterous personality, Brittany more than held<br />
her own among the mostly male community at the Pope<br />
Francis Center. She also faced some incredible challenges<br />
while using the Center’s services. Along with her partner<br />
Mike, Brittany flagged cars for a parking lot downtown<br />
and stayed all over the downtown area, including under the<br />
parking structure where she worked. But when she found<br />
out she was pregnant in August <strong>2016</strong>, she worried that the<br />
rough conditions on the streets would result in her third<br />
miscarriage. After telling staff member Joe about her worries,<br />
we worked hard to keep her healthy and safe. Thankfully,<br />
Brittany found a place to live in November and welcomed a<br />
healthy baby girl<br />

time at the Pope Francis Center fondly, saying that the<br />
people here go the extra mile to help. She remembers when<br />

stayed late to do<br />
her laundry. She says The Pope Francis Center is different<br />
than other warming centers because we’re like a family and<br />
she feels at home.<br />
Seeing our guests achieve this success is one of the most<br />
rewarding experiences we have at the Center. It is through<br />
the generosity of our friends, donors, and volunteers that<br />
we are able to support our homeless brothers and sisters.<br />
Ford Motor Company chose the Pope Francis Center as a non-profit partner for its <strong>2016</strong>-<strong>2017</strong> Thirty Under 30 program.<br />
Each year Ford selects thirty of Ford’s most promising young engineers, financiers, marketers and IT professionals from<br />
across the country and places them with thriving non-profits in the Detroit area, as part of an initiative to create future<br />
generations community-minded workers.<br />
Over the course of a year, each Thirty under 30 team<br />
works to understanding the challenges facing their<br />
non-profit partner, and seek innovative solutions to<br />
help them better serve their clients and communities.<br />
Through this process, these young professionals have a<br />
chance to engage with their communities and learn to<br />
seek solutions through which all thrive.<br />
This year, the Pope Francis Center has been blessed to<br />
work with Hannah Bailey, Body Structures Development<br />
Engineer from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology,<br />
Kimberly Barr Adaptive Steering Design and Release<br />
