Whatever you’re looking for in a 

beach, you’ll find it in our 72 miles of 

Atlantic Ocean beaches. Our sand and 

surf offer plenty of space for whatever 

type of beach day is right for you. 

At the North end of Brevard 

County, the Canaveral National 

Seashore offers 24 miles of 

undisturbed, natural beaches. 

From Port Canaveral all the way 

south to Sebastian Inlet State Park, 

the Space Coast holds over 40 miles 

of public beaches. Just about any 

eastward turn you make off Highway 

A1A will give you access to the beach. 

If you’re looking to get active, 

visit Cocoa Beach, a popular tourist 

destination where visitors can play a 

game of beach volleyball, splash in the 

surf or enjoy food and drinks on the 

famous Cocoa Beach Pier. 

To immerse yourself in the local 

beach culture, visit the east end of U.S. 

Highway 192 off A1A in the town of 

Indialantic where a 500-foot wooden 

boardwalk stretches along the beach. 

Space Coast Beaches are accessible 

for everyone, even those with 

disabilities. Some of our beach parks 

have free manual beach wheelchairs for 

visitors. 

Sebastian Inlet is a favorite of 

surfers and hosts several surf contests 

throughout the year. It is also popular 

for fishing with two long piers and even 

has a fishing museum on site.

From innertubes to first class 

surfing the Space Coast has 

a strong surfing heritage 

Our surf heritage dates back to the ’50s and early 

’60s when a core group of surfers with their plank-like 

longboards regularly made the trek up from South 

Florida to Cocoa Beach and Melbourne Beach. 

While many others followed in the footsteps of 

these original surfers, the Space Coast was truly 

placed on the world surfing map because of one 

individual – Kelly Slater. An eleven-time professional 

world champion and widely regarded as the greatest 

surfer of all time, Slater grew up plying the gentle

in the United States, it is easy to understand why 

the Space Coast is often referred to as the East 

Coast surfing capital of the country.

plenty of waves for surfers of all levels. In 

fact, if not for the foresight of our early rocket 

scientists, the Space Coast could just as likely be 

known as the “Surf Coast.”

SURFING 

Visitors looking to start riding the waves full-force are in luck. A1A 

and other places throughout the county are lined with surf shops 

stocked to the brim with surf boards, equipment, wetsuits and 

other surf attire. For a comprehensive list of all the surf shops on

Playalinda Beach 

Playalinda Beach is located in 

the Canaveral National Seashore 

and offers locals and visitors 

alike a rare undeveloped spot to 

test their surfing skills. 

Cocoa Beach Pier 

The pier is a legendary site 

for surfing competitions of 

world-wide significance. This 

surfing spot also is a big draw 

to locals and visitors due to 

its restaurants, shops and fun 

activities throughout the year. 


Although not really a huge 

surfing Mecca, die-hard 

surfers will discover a little 

history of Cocoa Beach’s own 

surfing champion, Kelly Slater. 

The park is family-friendly with 

volleyball courts, a bath house 

and a great area to relax after 

a hard day surfing. 

Cocoa Beach 

Numbered Streets 

All along Cocoa Beach, you’ll 

find numbered streets, where 

Highway A1A splits and 

Cocoa Beach’s residential 

area begins. There are many 

places where you can stop 

along the beachfront and grab 

your board to try and catch 

some wave action. 

Tables 

Located just across the street 

from Patrick Air Force Base is a 

R.C.’s 

According to local lore, 

R.C.’s is considered Central 

Florida’s best big wave spot. 

Park in the Publix parking lot 

in Satellite Beach, home of 

pro surfers C.J. and Damien 

Hobgood. Cross at the light 

and walk over the public 

beach access wedged in next 

to a condominium. 

Indialantic Boardwalk 

Located halfway between 

Sebastian Inlet and 

Cocoa Beach, you’ll 

discover Indialantic’s 

Boardwalk. Shorebreak is the 

boardwalk’s claim to fame. 

The outside sandbar can be 

fun on a medium tide, but it 

is best when linking all the 

way to the inside. There’s 

plenty of beach and lots of 

sandbars, so you’ll have a 

great opportunity to seek 

your own peak. 

Ocean Park 

The main break on Melbourne 

Beach is at the east end of 

Ocean Avenue. After turning

left at the four-way stop, you’re 

on Ocean Avenue. Drive two 

blocks to a small short-term 

parking lot overlooking the beach. 

Nearby you’ll find sand volleyball 

courts, a pavilion and a second 

parking facility with no time limits 

or meters. 

Spessard Holland 

When a swell has other high tide 

spots washing through, Spessard 

Holland can be clean and 

throwing. A deep trough past 

the inside sandbar allows for 

steep waves to cascade over the 

drastic depth change, creating 

a mid-section with the feet and 

push of a shorebreak. 

Spanish House 

Just past Bonsteel Park, you’ll 

find Spanish House. Under ideal 

conditions, you’ll find a strong 

swell, low tide, and an offshore 

breeze. There’s a chance for rare 

Florida perfection, transforming 

the beach into a top-to-bottom 

barrel garden. 

Sebastian Inlet 

Popular with the surfing 

community since the ’60s, 

sessions at the Sebastian 

Inlet continue to set and raise 

standards for breaks nationwide. 

Swells bounce off the jetty at 

First Peak with extra juice that 

can max out the potential of a 

head-high wave. Sebastian Inlet 

hosts several professional and 

amateur surf contests throughout 

the year.

A hush ripples through the crowd as thousands 

listen over the public address system for those much 

anticipated words: “We are GO for launch!” The 

countdown clock comes alive once again and eager 

voices chime in for the countdown, “10…9…8…” A bullet

Barrier Island Sanctuary

The Space Coast is a leader in Florida eco-tourism. 

Located on the Atlantic Flyway, the area is within close proximity to 40 sites on the Great Florida 

Birding Trail (GFBT) and is a perfect place to watch for migrating species. Options for exploring 

include guided and un-guided tours by foot, boat, automobile, kayak or bicycle. 

Brevard County values its outdoor amenities so much that in 1990 citizens voted to tax themselves 

up to $55 million dollars for the acquisition and maintenance of Brevard’s natural areas. Through the 

Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Program, over 20,000 acres will be preserved

WILDLIFE REFUGE 

panning 140,000 acres, the Merritt Island National 

Wildlife Refuge is home to seven distinct 

types of habitat, more than 500 species 

of wildlife including 15 threatened or endangered 

species, and more than 1,000 species of plants. 

The refuge provides habitats for migratory 

birds, including songbirds, and is a designated 

gateway to the east section of the Great Florida 

Birding Trail (GFBT Site #East N-103). With more 

than 40 miles of drivable dike roads, the refuge offers 

Peacock’s Pocket, Gator Creek, Shiloh Marsh, 

Biolab and L. Pond Roads for more opportunities to 

observe from a vehicle. 

In addition to birds, the refuge supports more 

threatened and endangered animals than any 

other refuge in the continental U.S., including the 

bald eagle, manatee, wood stork, gopher tortoise 

and eastern indigo snake. This makes the area a 

hotspot for observation and photography.

This site is a series of connected ponds created to 

treat wastewater from the Central Brevard area. 

Raised dikes offer opportunities for birding and 

observation towers look out over the ponds. During 

Fall and Winter, a good diversity of species use these 

wetlands. An active Bald Eagle nest is visible, two 

families of Crested Caracaras maintain territories here 

and Northern Harriers course above the marsh and 

pasture. Black-necked Stilts nest here in the spring 

and summer. This site has become a hotspot for 

rarities: the first U.S. sighting of a Mangrove Swallow 

was recorded here in 2002. Viera Wetlands is located 

just west of I-95 at Exit #191, Wickham Road; from 

there travel west to the end of the road.

This five-acre mangrove island in the Indian River 

Lagoon where thousands of brown pelicans and 

other water birds roost and nest is America’s first 

wildlife refuge. Established as the first federal bird 

reservation on March 14, 1903 by President Theodore 

Roosevelt, it was the forerunner to the national

Canoeing and kayaking in the Indian River Lagoon are

Anyone who has had the opportunity to witness 

bioluminescence can tell you it is an incredible 

experience that is not to be missed. 

This phenomenon is sometimes 

referred to as living lights in 

the water. It is caused by tiny 

dinoflagellates and appears shortly 

after sunset. In some places in 

the ocean and estuaries these 

bioluminescent organisms are so 

abundant that any disturbance such 

as a boat, a fish or even a hand 

passing through the water can 

produce a shimmering light show 

that is like peering into a fairy land. 

The aquatic sensation happens 

when electrons are excited by a 

very efficient chemical reaction 

that generates no heat at all (“cold 

light”). Bioluminescent creatures 

are not only beautiful and 

fascinating but are also critical 

to the existence of most marine 

life. They are little-known and 

underappreciated because so few 

people have the opportunity to 

see them with their own eyes.

DIAMONDBACK TERRAPIN TURTLES 

■ A Diamondback Terrapin Turtle is very rare and 

can be found in our lagoons. 

■ All have a unique pattern of wiggly, black marking or 

spots on their body and head. 

SEA TURTLE FACTS 

■ Adult sea turtles can weigh from 150 to 1,000 pounds 

and can live up to 80 years. 

■ The Archie Carr Refuge in Melbourne Beach represents 

25 – 35% of all loggerhead and green sea turtle nests in 

the entire United States. The leatherback turtle, which 

is one of the world’s largest and rarest sea turtles, also 

nests here, but in much smaller numbers. 

MANATEE FACTS 

■ Manatees, also known as sea cows, are actually related 

to the elephant. They have 3 toes like elephants and very 

dense bones with no bone marrow. 

■ A manatee’s lungs are 2/3’s the length of its body. 

GATOR FACTS 

■ An alligator cannot move its tongue, and must raise its 

head to swallow. 

■ How can you tell the length of an alligator? Each inch from 

its eyes to the tip of its nose equals one foot in total length. 

ROSEATE SPOONBILLS 

■ Roseate Spoonbill is one of Florida’s most distinctive 

wading birds and is often mistaken for a Flamingo. 

■ The Spoonbill has a white neck with pine or rose covering 

much of its body. Its wings are typically bright red to 

magenta depending on the age of the bird and whether 

breeding season is near. Its naked, green bald head is 

sometimes more reminiscent of a tortoise than a bird. 

HERONS, EGRETS & BITTERNS 

■ Herons, Egrets and Bitterns are all wading birds with 

long legs, long necks and sharp pointed bills that act as 

a spear in securing food. 

■ Bitterns are shy birds that live among the reeds and 

grasses of swamps.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES 

BETWEEN DOLPHINS AND 

PORPOISES? 

A dolphin has a pointed snout while a porpoise’s 

snout is short and blunt; the dolphins fin is shaped 

like a curling wave, while the trailing edge of a 

porpoise’s back fin is straight. 

Dolphins produce sounds we can hear (and are 

talkative) while porpoise sounds are inaudible. 

You will see dolphins in the Indian River 

Lagoon, Port Canaveral, Sebastian Inlet and along 

our beaches. 

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES 

BETWEEN EAGLES AND HAWKS? 

Eagles and hawks can easily be confused for each 

other. Both are known as raptors since they are birds 

of prey, birds that hunt for food primarily via flight, 

using their keen senses, especially vision. 

Eagles are more powerful than Hawks. The huge 

size of the eagle’s wingspan is living testimony for 

their sheer power. Some have a wingspan of 8 feet, 

where hawks only grow a maximum wingspan of 

5 feet.

Treetop Trek at Brevard Zoo combines tightropes, crab walks, 

jungle bridges, nets and zip lines, allowing visitors to experience nature like 

never before. The attraction is comprised of four exciting aerial obstacle courses, each 

suited for various age groups and physical-fitness levels. In addition, Treetop Trek offers an all-zip option. 

■ CANOPY WALK is the Treetop Trek’s introductory 

course and allows participants 54 inches and taller 

to climb 20 feet into the trees of the Zoo’s La Selva 

(“the jungle”) area taking in sights of monkeys, giant

walkways, five treetop challenges and two zip lines.

Fishing and boating are 

favorite pastimes of locals, and 

that’s why the Space Coast is chock full of 

marinas, boat rentals, fish camps and charters. 

Our salt waters allow anglers to experience 

world-class fishing, reeling in popular 

catches such as spotted sea trout, snook, redfish, 

tarpon, mahi-mahi, king and spanish mackeral, 

sailfish, cobia, flounder, grouper, pompano, 

snapper, tripletail and wahoo just to name a few. 

Freshwater fishing spots also abound with over 50 

species in bodies of water such as the St. Johns 

River, area rivers and lakes, and the Stick Marsh 

located in the Southwest part of the county. Cast 

a line from a pier, riverbank or ocean shoreline. 

Hop on board a professional charter boat on the 

Indian River Lagoon or offshore in the Atlantic. If 

you trailer your own boat here, there are 35 public 

boat ramps across the county giving you access to 

both fresh and saltwater. With over 20 marinas, 

as well as 75 salt-water inshore, offshore and 

freshwater fishing charters, there’s no shortage of 

opportunities to reel one in! Experienced captains 

will be your personal guides, safely navigating 

Space Coast waters, offering personal fishing 

lessons and letting you in on their insider secrets for 

the best spots to land fish. 

Even if you don’t want to fish, you can still feel 

the excitement during the weigh-ins of local 

fishing tournaments. Hundreds of anglers take 

to the seas to compete for cash and merchandise 

prizes at Port Canaveral each spring and summer.

HISTORICAL LANDMARKS 

The Brevard County Historical Commission highlights 

and promotes historic sites with a series of 46 

Historical Landmark Markers which are accessible to 

the public. The origin of the county’s name is widely 

attributed to Theodore W. Brevard, Florida Comptroller at 

the time of the county’s creation. From Native Americans, 

who ventured into the area perhaps as long as 12,000 

years ago to Spanish explorers to Civil War soldiers, 

Brevard continued to grow. By the 1960s the home of 

American’s human spaceflight was established here 

producing a boom in population growth and development 

that continues to influence the region today.
