You are already too late.
Nice going.
what the what?
You may be wondering what’s up with this magazine. You probably
think I’m crazy, right?
That’s the point of this project. We all have doubts, fears, and that
critical inner voice telling us we’re not enough. But if you can become
aware of those messages and realize that they’re not true, they lose
their power over you.
One way to do that is to create an tangible representation of them.
That can help you see that they’re not really part of you. They come
from outside, and you don’t have to listen to them.
I decided to create my representation as a magazine, simply because
it was fun. Also, the purpose of most advertising is to make you
feel bad so you’ll buy things, so I hardly even had to make much of a
parody to create this magazine.
If you want to shift the negative messages in your head, you may
enjoy my book, How to be Happy (No Fairy Dust or Moonbeams
Required). Check it out at 17000-days.com/how-to-be-happy It’s free!
I’ve had a lot of fun creating this magazine. I hope you enjoy it!
Life is way too scary
to face head-on.
Better keep it contained in a tiny screen.
It’s safer that way.
Wordless Fears
We all know the fears that come in word form.
“What if I’m not good enough?”
“What if I’m not smart enough?”
“What if nobody likes me?”
But those aren’t as bad as the wordless ones.
You can argue with a fear you recognize. You can
come up with backup plans,
evaluate and mitigate risk,
think of other times that turned out ok.
But the wordless ones, the ones that comes as
a sharp twist in your guts,
a band of dread around your forehead,
those carry a different brand of authority.
We feel these bits of tension and anxiety, but we
may not even consciously notice them. It’s easy
to miss them or to assume they know what
they’re talking about.
After all, we have fear for a reason. It’s here to
protect us. Maybe it’s right. Maybe we should
be small
play it safe
hide under the bed
never let anyone see us

You’re too loud.
You’re too quiet.
You’re too weird.
You’re too boring.
You’re too vulgar.
You’re too uptight.
You’re too brainy.
You should know better.
Just be yourself.
It’s easy.
You’re too serious.
Don’t be silly!
This is all your fault.
Loosen up. Stop worrying.
Smile!
Don’t be so fake.
Say what you think.
Don’t be mean.
Be cool.
