Training:
The Greater Manchester CILEx Branch would like to thank
Caroline Wood from Park Square Chambers will be providing
training on Experts and Part 35 Questions.
The training was an interactive session with Caroline providing
examples of both good and bad questions.
Diversity in the Judiciary
The next training event will take place on Thursday 23 November
2017 at 6pm. Judge Rebecca Howard will be discussing
diversity in the Judiciary. If you intend to progress
to a Judge this training will give you the opportunity to ask
questions.
The Constitution Select Committee of the House of Lords
has recommended that Chartered Legal Executives who
demonstrate the requisite attributes should not be prevented
from becoming senior judges.
This aligns with CILEx’s ongoing campaign to see the eligibility
criteria for senior judicial roles modernised so that
Chartered Legal Executives can have their applications considered.
Fellows of CILEx – three quarters of whom are women - are
currently eligible to apply for judicial roles up to the level
of District Judge, whilst lawyers from other professions are
eligible to apply for roles at any level. In practice a Chartered
Legal Executive already holding judicial office could apply
for other judicial roles, though they are the only legal profession
to whom different eligibility criteria apply.
CILEx recently launched its Judicial Development Programme,
which provides aspiring Chartered Legal Executives
with one-to-one mentoring from judges, and tailored
support in preparing themselves for applying.
At the recent Graduation and Admission ceremony, CILEx
members were encouraged to enter the ranks of the judiciary
by, amongst others, the Solicitor General Robert Buckland
QC MP.
Christmas Party
The Greater Manchester CILEx branch Christmas Party will
take place on at 6pm 7 December 2017. The event will take
place at the Slug and Lettice, Piccadilly Gardens.
Tickets will be £10.00 for Greater Manchester Branch Members
and £15.00 for non-members. The drinks at the event
will be sponsored by Conveyancing Data Services.

MTSG Update
FELT Director Amanda Cheung said following the event "It was great to see familiar faces
and new ones at this event. Everyone enjoyed the wine and food - it was the perfect way
to welcome the festive season and for FELT members to get to know each other!"
Charity
A great night was had by all on 9th November when MTSG members met for the charity
bowling night at Bog Bowl. The sell out-event, which was kindly sponsored by Michael Page
Legal, raised hundreds of pounds for one of the MTSG’s charities of the year, JDRF, which is
a charity committed to creating a world without type 1 diabetes. The fun-filled evening
treated attendees to food, drink and (of course!) bowling whilst getting the chance to meet
new people and help a very worthwhile cause. A charity raffle was also held on the evening
with some amazing prizes won.
A special thanks to our Charity Directors Heena Kapadi and Karlis Rullis for all their hard work
in organising the event.
Keep an eye out for details of our next charity event, which is to be held on Thursday 7th
December at Kiehl's Boutique, located on King Street. Tickets will be just £4.00, and on the
evening attendees will be able to enjoy a number of treats including canapes from Grand
Pacific, hair and make-up tips from Blow Ltd, a showcase of Stella & Dot’s jewellery, hand
and arm massages from Kiehls, healthy skin checks from Kiehls, product offers and some
fantastic raffle prizes. An event not to be missed!
FELT
November saw the return of the MTSG FELT wine tasting event, which again was a huge success.
Kindly sponsored by our friends at BCL Legal, the event was a perfect excuse for FELT
members to socialise and network whilst spending the evening welcoming in the festive
season with some delicious wine and food.
MTSG Winter Ball
The MTSG held their annual ‘Winter Wonderland’ ball on 30 November at the Museum of
Science and Industry. Attendees were treated to a spectacular evening, where fairy lights
from the Christmas tree sparkled amongst historical exhibits from the world of science and
engineering – a truly stunning backdrop. Hosted by Capital FM’s James Hall, the evening included
a drinks reception, 3 course meal, hours of dancing and even personalised cupcakes.
Attendees won some fantastic prizes during the charity raffle, successfully raising funds
for our sponsored charities and continued the celebrations into the night at the official after
party which was held at Guilty By Associated in the Northern Quarter.
I would like to say a massive thank you to the MTSG Ball Directors, Charlotte Tyrer, Nicole
Rourke and Beth Ashton, who put hours of work into making the event such a huge success.
A special thanks also to the event sponsors, Aurelius, who were hugely involved with
the planning of the event alongside Charlotte, Nicole and Beth – thank you for your continuing
support of the MTSG.
