The Tanuki Shares His Meal With The Old Priest
The old priest, however, took time to pack his medicines and the begging pot. It was a two day walk to the castle. The first day people put all kinds of food and sake into the pot, but when the priest sat down to eat, most of the food was gone. “Shame on you, pot,” said the old priest. “You must not be so greedy.” He put the pot on the ground and shook his finger at it. Suddenly, the pot began to sprout legs, then a tail… and finally a head. When finished, it stood up on its hind legs, revealing a very very old tanuki in a priest’s robe. “It takes a lot of food for me to remain a pot, but if you will share equally with me on this journey, I will try to help you cure the princess.” So saying, the tanuki reached into his robe and brought out two rice balls, one for himself and one for the priest. Gratefully, the old priest asked, “Why not just keep your true shape?” “Men can be cruel, even if an animal is hundreds of years old. I find it easier to watch my shrine as a pot.” The tanuki licked the last bit of his rice ball off his paws and curled up to sleep. The next morning, when the priest looked for the tanuki, he found only the pot. At the castle, the princess was dying. The young priest was at her side praying, and when he saw the begging pot, he scoffed. You have brought that ugly thing into this beautiful child’s room. Take it away at once.” Instead, the priest set the pot next to the unconscious princess and said, “Have you seen this sickness before?” The pot immediately turned into the tanuki and began sniffing. Abru[tly his nose twitched in disgust.
