Digital Training is as easy as 1,2,3.
Three’s Discovery programme, which sets out to help people explore mobile technology
and learn new skills will make their free digital training available in Scotland for the
first time. The Discovery Scotland team will take free digital skills sessions to individuals,
schools, local groups and small businesses in the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas in a bid to
reach more of the community than ever before.
This move into Scotland coincides with Three becoming a signatory of Scotland’s
Digital Participation Charter, an initiative created by the Scottish Council for Voluntary
Organisations (SCVO) with the support of the Scottish Government.
Discovery sessions have been designed to inspire people of all ages and skill levels to get
more from being online and mobile whilst providing a safe, fun environment in which
to explore and learn. The team of specially trained Three staff can help with anything –
whether it’s setting-up a Facebook page, an email address or LinkedIn profile, or a tutorial
for small business owners on how to master the power of your mobile and effortlessly
run their company on the go. The sessions or advice can even be entirely tailored to each
customer via one-to-one sessions in stores.
Three has held over 250 sessions this year for community groups across the UK, including
schools, charities, community centres and job centres. These sessions have reached 4,200
people and Discovery as a whole has assisted 10,000 people to date.
To book a Discovery session for your group, please contact discovery@three.co.uk or visit
your local store for individual sessions.
Keep your family
well this Christmas!
The festive holidays can be
magical, especially with children.
But ill-health can really spoil things,
especially if you haven’t got medicines at
home to relieve symptoms. The best thing
to do is be prepared and stock up on cold
and flu remedies, remembering to get the
right ones for children too.
A thermometer is handy, as are things like
antiseptic, plasters and bandages just in
case the wee ones have a minor accident.
Now’s a good time to make sure you have
everything you need for a happy and
healthy Christmas and New Year.
A new era in world sport will get underway
between 2 – 12 August 2018 as Glasgow
hosts an exciting new multi-sport event
bringing together the existing European
Championships for Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon with a new Golf
Team Championships.
Tickets for 84 thrilling sporting sessions start at just £10 for adults and £5 for under
16s and over 60s. A vibrant cultural programme, Festival 2018, will run alongside the
sporting action.
The official mascot Bonnie the seal is travelling around Scotland meeting sports fans and
young people between now and the Championships as excitement builds.
Every year Primary Times asks children to create the picture for our Christmas Card. This
year we received a sack full of wonderful entries and we would like to thank you all for
taking the time to draw, colour, paint and glitter your designs for us!
The overall winner of the competition is Holly Zheng’s, aged 6 from Garnetbank
Primary School in Glasgow who will receive 50 Christmas cards made up in her design
of Santa next to a Christmas Tree.
We were so overwhelmed by the standard of entries that we have also decided to award
two runner up prizes who will also receive 50 copies of their designs made into cards,
they were:
(Igloo) Sahaib Parvez, aged 10 from Cambuslang,
Glasgow
(nativity)
Florence Holt, aged 6 from Radley Primary
School, Abingdon.
Everyone that entered was a winner.
You’ve Got To Be In It
To Win It!
“I never win anything!”
Does that sound familiar? Well we’re
pleased to say that Primary Times
competition winners Cooper and Finlay
won’t be able to say that any time soon.
Cooper (age 5) entered our competition
to win tickets for a family ticket to the
opening show of Disney On Ice Passport
To Adventure at the Braehead Arena in
September and won!
Their mum Mellonie contacted us after
the show and said “We just wanted to say
a huge thank you. My kids had a fabulous
time and are still talking about it - me and
my husband thoroughly enjoyed it too!!”
All Aboard!
Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust is partnering
Glasgow School of Art to produce and host
Corpies, Clippies & Light, a groundbreaker in
which high-tech video projection
mapping, lighting, sound and
sculpture will be used to tell the
tales behind vintage buses at
Bridgeton Garage. The building
itself is the last survivor of the
Glasgow Corporation Transport
era and will be transformed into
Cooper and Finlay getting ready for
Disney On Ice.
So, head to our competition page. You
never know – you just might win!
a living 3D theatre. Our event will appeal
equally to art, history and transport buffs as
it will to mum, dad and the kids.
Corpies, Clippies & Light is on December 9.
CHRISTMAS
TRADiTIONS
AROUND THE
WORLD
Christmas is such a special time of year and
each family has traditions they follow that
are unique to them. Some are handed
down through the generations, some are picked
up from our transatlantic neighbours (Elf on the
Shelf, I’m looking at you!), and others we follow
and have no idea why?!
In the UK some of our favourites include hanging up a
stocking on Christmas Eve and leaving a mince pie and milk
out for Santa, not forgetting a carrot for Rudolph, pulling
Christmas crackers and eating turkey for Christmas dinner.
One of the oldest traditions in the UK is Stir up Sunday which
takes place five week before the big day. This is always last
Sunday before advent, essentially the last one in November.
For centuries families have gathered for the making of the
Christmas pudding. Everyone in the house takes a turn
giving the cake mixture a stir while making a wish. Some
households put coins in the mix, with the finder promised
wealth, health and happiness for the coming year.
Whilst this may seem the norm to us in the UK it may be
considered ‘stir-crazy’ to other countries. However, it is
relatively tame compared to some. Take a look at some of
the strangest festive traditions from around the glove.
MEXICO
Here in the UK our choice of festive vegetables are brussels
sprouts and roast parsnips, however in the city of Oaxaca,
Mexico the radish tops the list. It is traditional in Mexico to
celebrate The Noche de Rabano - the Night of the Radishes.
An annual event dedicated to the carving of oversized
radishes. Every year, the humble radish is carved into
beautiful, intricate sculptures of animals, dancers, saints,
conquerors, kings and everything else imaginable
Unfortunately, the Radish Night festival lasts only a few
hours as obviously vegetables have a limited lifespan as
folk art!
GERMANY
The tradition of the Christmas Pickle is one of the strangest
customs mainly because no-one is quite sure why it exists
at all! It is claimed that the pickle is the last ornament to be
hung on the Christmas tree and then the first child to find
the pickle gets an extra present.
One far-fetched story which may explain the custom is
a medieval tale of Spanish boys traveling home from a
boarding school for the holidays. When they stopped at an
inn for the night the evil innkeeper killed the boys and put
them in a pickle barrel. That evening, St. Nicholas stopped
at the same inn and found the boys in the barrel and
miraculously bought them back to life!
SLOVAKIA
The most senior man of the house takes a spoonful of loksa
pudding and throws it at the ceiling. The more that sticks the
luckier they will be. Not so lucky if you happen to be sitting
under it when it doesn’t stick though!
VENEZUELA
In Caracas, Venezuela, every year between 16th and 24th of
December the roads are closed to traffic. The reason for this
is to allow people to roller-skate to early morning Christmas
mass. Even more bizarre, on the way the skaters will tug on
the ends of long pieces of string tied by children to their big
toes and dangled out the window.
THE UKRAINE
If you are visiting The Ukraine over Christmas, you could be
forgiven for thinking it is actually Halloween. The trees there
are decorated with artificial spider webs and decorative
spiders. This tradition is based on a folk tale where a
mythical spider wove a web around the plain tree of a poor
family. When morning came the white strands turned to
precious metal and the family was rich. It makes a change
from tinsel!
JAPAN
One of the best, and one which my children are keen to
embrace.
Over the past few years, it has become customary for the
Japanese to tuck into a festive feast of Kentucky Fried
Chicken on Christmas Day. Thanks to a successful advertising
campaign, KFC branches throughout Japan report that
families will queue around the block to pick up their meal.
It has now become so popular that orders for the KFC
Christmas Party Barrel are taken as early as October.
Whilst these are harmless, the stories behind some customs
are quite scary!
ICELAND
Don’t stop to pet this kitty! The Jólakötturinn, or Yule Cat, is
a monster from Icelandic folklore who lurks in the snow and
eats people who haven’t received any new clothes to wear
before Christmas Eve.
Legend says the threat of being eaten by the Yule Cat was
used by farmers as an incentive for their workers to finish
processing the autumn wool before Christmas. The ones who
took part in the work would be rewarded with new clothes,
but those who did not would get nothing and thus would be
preyed upon by the monstrous cat.
Probably the most terrifying Icelandic Christmas myths is
Grýla- a giant troll with hooves for feet and an impressive
thirteen tails. According to folklore, she travels from the
mountains in search of naughty children. When she finds
them, she eats them.
It’s no surprise that children are rarely naughty in Iceland!
Finally, one of the nicest we have come across is also
from Iceland, and makes up for the previous frightening
traditions.
On Christmas Eve books are exchanged as presents, then you
spend the rest of the night in bed reading your new book
and eating chocolate. The tradition is part of a season called
Jolabokaflod, or The Christmas Book Flood and began during
World War II when paper was one of the few commodities
not rationed. Iceland sells more books per capita than any
other country between September and November due to
people preparing for the upcoming holiday. This sounds like
the ideal way to spend Christmas Eve!
However you plan on celebrating and whichever customs
your family follow, we hope you have a very merry Christmas
and a prosperous New Year!
The Good, The Fad and The Cuddly
T
he must-have lists of toys for the year are
already being published, and Christmas is
looming large on the horizon. Santa is
usually pretty switched on and can find most
things on the lists of children around the world, but
sometimes he needs a little help from ever vigilant
parents. Being on the ball and getting out there
early to give St Nick a hand is a good idea
because every year toy shop workers are driven to
mince pie and sherry overload by parents
screaming at them on Christmas Eve. It doesn’t
matter how hard you shout “WHERE IS MY PO?”,
if that mischievous Teletubby is sold out, it’s not
going to miraculously appear. Tuning in to what’s
popular with your children and their peers is a
good way to stay ahead of the curve and often
very helpful in not leaving it too late.
Fads come and go; this year the Fidget Spinner
achieved mass popularity and headlines around
the country, but how do toy fads, or fads in general
start and is there a difference between memes (the
adult version) and the whims of toy fashions?
The sudden appearance of ‘must have’ toys in
the playground is a regular phenomenon and it is
something that has occurred on a regular basis
long before the internet and social media existed.
For example, the yo-yo has been enormously
popular with various generations and even
appeared on The Simpsons as an example of a
toy fad explosion - driving poor Edna Krabappel
to distraction in the process.
Philip Graves, a Consumer Psychologist and
author of Consumer.ology suggests that these
explosions in popularity occur when a child sees
enough children in a short period of time with
a particular toy and this creates a sense of
importance around it. If the first children with the
toy are also considered to be ‘cool’ and the toy
lends itself to being shown or shared, then there’s
a good chance of a fad flareup.
It’s not just fidget spinning or learning to perfect
‘Walking the dog’ with your yo-yo of course.
Collectibles have a way of turning the playground
into something that looks like Wall Street. Over
the years there’s been playtime racketeering in
Pokemon cards, Pogs and Panini Stickers.
Whether you’ve got to catch them all or need to
trade a handful of silvery Club Badge Stickers for
the all-important Alan Curtis in his slippers card
“Got – Need – Swap” has long been a mantra
heard at breaktimes. Not knowing what cards you
will get until you’ve opened the pack; or finding a
rare card or toy will generate a peak of excitement
when found and when lots of small purchases are
required it can create the habit of purchasing them
in association with another regular part of daily life.
Add this to the hurly burly of the school yard
trading floor, and it’s easy to see how collectibles
become exciting.
With the advent of social media, memes are
becoming almost as important as toys in the
language of the playground and social media.
If you don’t know your dab from your grumpy cat,
then “How Do You Do Fellow Kids” might be for
you. Memes might be different to fads
psychologically, in that they can get into people’s
heads and are spread almost unconsciously, but
the idea that they are a part of the legacy of
people’s reliance on story-telling for passing
information through the generations is rather
pleasing. Fads and trends tend to be more driven
by marketing and the need to fit in, which doesn’t
have the same appeal.
Fashions can pass in the blink of an eye. The
yo-yo might be gathering dust in a drawer but
soon it’ll be joined by a spinner as the next big
thing takes its place. Making a classic is much
harder, but somehow Monopoly, Lego and Barbie
have continued success. Philip Graves suggests
that this is down to the manufacturers working
hard to constantly make their products relevant
to children, which makes sense. Barbie seems to
have a new wardrobe, friend and car on a regular
basis, but then, she is very popular. Similarly, Lego
and Monopoly constantly shift and change to keep
parents and children on their toes.
The world is changing though and access to the
online world not only makes it harder for fads to
take hold (because there are so many distractions
and options available) but it is also possible for
children to get hugely engaging and rewarding
experiences with very little effort on their part,
which makes for a heady psychological cocktail.
Whether this move online will signal the end of the
fad in the playground is anyone’s guess, but app
developers are certainly designing their products to
make them fun and addictive.
Whatever your children ask for, try not to feel the
pressure of getting this year’s big thing and
remember that trends come and go. By lunchtime
they’ll most likely have spent more time playing
with the box.
With thanks to Philip Graves – Consumer
Psychologist and author of Consumer.ology
Fads Through The Years
Pet Rock Parents often hark back to
the days when all children needed for
entertainment was string, a stick, and
some imagination, but in 1975, that
changed and all they needed was a
rock – with some googly eyes on it.
Yes, caring for a rock like it was a pet
really was all the rage.
Cabbage Patch Dolls Such was the
demand for these dolls in the 80s, that
stores in the US had to hold lotteries
for the small supplies they were able
to get. In some cases, police had to
be called to break up riots of angry
parents. Had they deployed Rubik’s
Cubes, that would have kept the
mobs quiet for a while. Probably.
Furby The 90s might have been the
decade of toy fads beginning with the
letter P – Pokemon, Pogs and Polly
Pocket, but the Furby won hearts by
being furry and cute.
Bratz When they first appeared, Bratz
dolls were not a success, but it wasn’t
long before they were challenging
Barbie as the most popular doll on
the shelves. The subject of multiple
controversies since their launch,
Bratz dolls are loved and hated in
almost equal measure.
Hatchimals As technology has
moved on, the must have items tend
to be tablet or console based. All of
which seems a bit boring. So, in 2016
when the Hatchimal arrived it seemed
a bit more exciting than tech hardware
or yet another film tie-in (Star Wars
and Frozen, we’re looking at you). It
might have seemed like a weird cross
between a Furby and a Tamagotchi,
but waiting for a fluffy bird to hatch
from an egg? It was pretty adorable.
Nana knows best how to keep
the family well this winter
Being a grandparent usually
involves all the best bits of
raising a child, with not so
much of the hard work of
being mum or dad. Sleepovers
and spoiling are the order
of the day.
But having already had your own kids
means that grandparents have a wealth
of knowledge that can help busy parents,
particularly when it comes to keeping the
wee ones safe and well.
Nana Annie lives in Fife and is lucky enough
to have eleven grandchildren, aged from
5 months to 22 years. With so many little
ones around, Annie knows a thing or two
about making sure they keep coughs and
colds at bay, and what to do if illness strikes.
Annie shares her top tips: “It can be busy
with the little ones, especially at this time
of year. I always make sure there’s liquid
paracetamol, ibuprofen and cough remedies
in, just in case the grandchildren bring the
bugs when they come to stay.”
Despite having lots of experience in looking
after kids, Annie says she does sometimes
need to check she’s giving them the right
care. Annie says the website nhsinform.scot
is good for this: “If I’m not sure about
something, I will look it up on NHSinform.
I’ve even used the self-help guides on there
to check symptoms. We’re lucky to have
a community pharmacy down the road too,
and she’s great at helping with minor things
and advice about medicines.”
Annie’s wise advice is backed up by the
NHSScotland campaign ‘Be Health-Wise This
Winter’. The campaign is brought to you by
NHS 24, along with some familiar faces, and
reminds us of the simple steps we can take
to manage winter illnesses and what to do if
anyone in the family falls ill. If we take time
to be health-wise this winter, we can all
enjoy a relaxing festive break.
How to be health-wise
this winter:
• Make sure you have cold, flu and
dehydration remedies at home
• Make sure you have your repeat
prescription. Order only what you
need and in plenty of time
• Check when your GP surgery and local
pharmacy are open over the holidays
If you fall ill and can’t wait until your
surgery reopens, you can contact
NHS 24 on 111. Dr Owl will also be
tweeting advice and top tips throughout
the wintertime so do follow @NHS24
on Twitter and look for #healthwise.
If you’re on Facebook you can join us
there too.
