<str<strong>on</strong>g>Is</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>there</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>black</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mold</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>your</strong> Edm<strong>on</strong>t<strong>on</strong> <strong>roof</strong>?<br />

Today’s biggest c<strong>on</strong>cern am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>roof</strong>ing c<strong>on</strong>tractors in Edm<strong>on</strong>t<strong>on</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>black</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mold</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>your</strong> <strong>roof</strong>.<br />

With health being a number <strong>on</strong>e priority in every<strong>on</strong>e’s life, it really is a serious issue. With flat<br />

<strong>roof</strong>s (Tar & gravel), <str<strong>on</strong>g>there</str<strong>on</strong>g> is a higher risk of <str<strong>on</strong>g>black</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mold</str<strong>on</strong>g> being present, whether in the walls or in<br />

the insulati<strong>on</strong>. If <strong>your</strong> home was not built correctly right from the beginning with proper<br />

venting, then you need an expert to inspect <strong>your</strong> house as so<strong>on</strong> as possible.<br />

In our experience it seems that half the houses designed with flat <strong>roof</strong>s in Edm<strong>on</strong>t<strong>on</strong>, most<br />

from over 30 years ago, were vented incorrectly. Houses vented correctly usually have a<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinuous aluminum ridge vent running al<strong>on</strong>g the whole length of the peak. With this<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinuous vent is also a vented soffit. This being said, if you have a split or a hole <strong>on</strong> the <strong>roof</strong>, a<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al <strong>roof</strong>ing c<strong>on</strong>tractor will simply patch the <strong>roof</strong>, and if properly vented everything will<br />

dry up so<strong>on</strong> in a natural state.<br />

Roofs that aren’t properly vented will end up trapping moisture and hence will turn into <str<strong>on</strong>g>black</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>mold</str<strong>on</strong>g>. I am not an expert <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>black</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>mold</str<strong>on</strong>g>, but a proper building inspector or in particular a flat<br />

<strong>roof</strong> inspector should be able to give you the correct advice. Any credible <strong>roof</strong>ing c<strong>on</strong>tractor in

Edm<strong>on</strong>t<strong>on</strong> should be able to work with a qualified inspector, bearing in mind that <str<strong>on</strong>g>there</str<strong>on</strong>g> are<br />

<strong>roof</strong>ing c<strong>on</strong>tractors that w<strong>on</strong>’t work with any <strong>roof</strong>ing inspectors.<br />

My best pers<strong>on</strong>al advice about a <strong>roof</strong>ing c<strong>on</strong>tractor that w<strong>on</strong>’t work with a qualified inspector is<br />

to take this as a red flag. We are here to correct, fix, and give you the proper service that you<br />

are paying for. That being said, I d<strong>on</strong>’t want to scare or panic any<strong>on</strong>e just because a leak has<br />

developed.<br />

In over the 30 years of <strong>roof</strong>ing experience, I find it is usually the <strong>roof</strong>s that have been ignored<br />

for lack of maintenance that pose the most risk.<br />
