Welcome
Welcome to the International Family Eat and Learn book. Our family started doing this
over a year ago and since then we have sampled foods and flavors from every corner
of the globe. Now we and our children can tell you about different clutures, how they
eat, why they eat the way they do, and also about thier economies religions,
demographics and more. Doing this has not only educated our children to the world
around them but also taught them how to cook and the best part is that they and we
have enjoyed every minute of it. The conversations around the dinner table are lively,
interesting, and always a learning experience. It is our greatest hope that this book will
bring as much joy and learning to you as it has to our family.
Introduction
Our family includes myself, my wife Michelle, and our three hungry boys Charlie 13, Braxton
12, and Joel 10. And when I say hungry I do mean hungry. Whether it's a big meal with lots
of prep or just frozen pizzas, dinnertime for our family is always an event. For us it's not only
a time for eating, dinnertime is also one of the only daily times when all of us can sit down and
join together in conversation. Now, for those of you with children, you know that generating
constructive conversation with hungry children at the dinner table can be a challenge; let
alone conversation that might be educational or provide a learning experience with your kids.
Expecting every dinner experience to be fun and infomative might be expecting to much when
hungry kids are involved. But, we have discovered a way to make at least one dinner
experience each week to be just that. My wife and I love to cook together. The kitchen has
always played a central role in our family. Not only is the kitchen where we eat but also where
the kids do their homework, where we pay the bills and make family decisions, it's where the
kids chores are posted, and even on Friday nights it's where my wife and I have date-night
and if I'm lucky, dance in the kitchen too.
Over the past few years my wife and I have tried different ways of enhancing the boys interest
in food and cooking. When it comes to making mac and cheese or baking brownies, our kids
are pros. But when the day comes that each of them move out into a kitchen of their own or
perhaps meet that special someone who expects a homecooked meal, we knew that thier
kitchen survival skills needed improvment. In order to peak their interest and teach them
some basic kitchen skills we needed to construct a way of making it interesting and fun. This
routine gives us a chance to work with each child individually on a weekly basis with the end
result being shared and discussed with the entire family. Making unique dinners not only
teaches the child about measureing cups, spices, cooking temperatures, etc. but also about
different flavors, textures, and smells. Then, at dinner they are required to explain their
ingredients which gives a much deeper understanding and lasting impression of the
experience to them. They actually learn, remember, and are able to adjust and create their
own reciepes!
The concept of this book is simple and easy. It doesn't require any extra time in the kitchen
and over time becomes something your children actually look forward to. And we hope that it
brings as much conversation, discussion, and laughter as it has ours.
How to use this book and the website
Using this book is simple
This book contains 52 pages which will enable you to use it once a week for an entire year
with your children. For us having 3 boys, one child has one assignment each week.
During their week, they are giving their assignment below and expected to either make or
assist with making thier chosen dinner. Then, at the dinner table, using the book they carry
out the rest of their assignment.
1) Using the map located in the middle of this book, have your child pick a country they are
interested in. It doesn't matter where in the world or even if they can pronounce the
county's name or not. Sometimes our boys will even close their eyes and poke the map at
random.
2) Via the library, internet, or even friends the job of your child is to find a recipe they are
interested in making. Help them by choosing one that is relativly easy to make according
to their skill level and also one that the ingredients are readily available.
3) Instruct your child, again using the informative tools available, to find five interesting
facts about the country they have chosen. Depending on their age, facts might be anything
from the country's geographical location, currency, demographics, religious affiliations, or
even what type of clothing or language the country's people have. Older children might
even be encouraged to discuss GDP or political aspects. The important thing is that they
discover the information and are able to openly and informativly discuss it with the other
family members because inevidibly, there will be questions.
4) As you and your child prepare dinner you can help them with their 5 topic discussion
items. Help them be able to explain fully their items so they are confident when it comes to
speaking and explaining in front of everyone else.
5) Have the chosen child help set the table and then during dinner they will name the
country they chose, explain the dish they have made, and then tell the 5 items they
discovered about that country.
6) In our house, those who make dinner get to watch those who didn't do the dishes. This
is of course up to you. :)
Extra ideas: new utensils, clothing, props, etc.
Deadly Dishes
Did you know?
Some countries serve up delicious
but deadly cusines.
Many nations serve up delicacies
that, if prepared incorrectly, can be
deadly. In Japan, a puffer fish dinner
can paralyze and asphyxiate diners
when prepared wrong, while the
brain mushroom, which is popular
throughout Scandinavia, Eastern
Europe, and the Great Lakes region
of North America can be fatal if
eaten raw. In Namibia, meanwhile,
the adult giant bullfrog is considered
a delicious delicacy—but young
giant bullfrogs, eaten before they
reach maturity, carry a toxin that can
cause kidney failure.
Dinner in Korea
In Korea, to this day, when a young
person is eating with someone older,
they must turn their face away from
the elder member of the table and
shield their lips with their hand when
taking a sip of alcohol. This is done
as a sign of respect. The importance
of respect is found everywhere in
Korea: the Korean language has
over 600 different word endings to
be used in different social situations,
depending upon seniority. This
makes Korean the hardest language
in the world to learn, despite its
simple 24 letter alphabet (Hangul).
How Much?
Most Expensive Burger!
Sit down, expensive burgers of yore. The
“Glamburger” is here to kick your privilege
in the face. All fancy burgers have some
form of black truffle and a Kobe Wagyu
beef patty from Japan — this one throws
in lobster, beluga caviar, venison, a duck
egg and an edible gold leaf. And it only
costs $1,768!
That’s right, kids. A layer of gold on your
burger. To eat!
RECIPE
Stewed Cane Rat
Skin and eviscerate the rat and
split it lengthwise. Fry until
brown in a mixture of butter and
peanut oil. Cover with water, add
tomatoes or tomato purée, hot
red peppers, and salt. Simmer
the rat until tender and serve
with rice.
In West Africa, however, rats are a major item of diet. the giant rat (Cricetomys), the cane rat
(Thryonomys), the common house mouse, and other species of rats and mice are all eaten.
According to a United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization report, they now comprise
of over 50 percent of the locally produced meat eaten in some parts of Ghana. Between
December 1968 and June 1970, 258,206 pounds of cane-rat meat alone were sold in one
market in Accra! This is a local recipe that shows the South American influence on West
African cuisine.
Seasoning Secret: Keep Feet Smelling Sweet
Another great secret about your seasonings: If you use sage only to stuff turkeys, then
you’ve been missing out. Sage is great for preventing foot odour because it kills the
odour-causing bacteria that grow on your feet in the warm, moist environment inside
your shoes. Just crumble a leaf or two into your shoes before you put them on. At the
end of the day, just shake the remains into the trash.
Don't Fork Around
You probably think the fork should
be used to spear food from your
plate in order to place it in your
mouth. Not in Thailand, however,
where it's considered crude and
low-class to eat this way, when
everybody knows the only use for
this utensil is to push food onto a
spoon, which is then placed into the
1. Clip the toenails on chicken feet and wash the feet,
removing the callous and any loose-hanging skin.
2. Place the chicken feet in a 2 quart saute pan and
add enough water to cover. Add the ingredients for
simmer and bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer
and cook until feet are tender, one and a half to two
hours. Remove the feet from the cooking liquid, which
can be reserved for another purpose.
3. Allow the feet to cool. Then dip in egg and flour,
shaking off excess flour. To make sure that the feet are
covered in the batter, dip in egg and flour twice if
needed.
4. Bring a wok with the quart of oil to 375°F. Add the
chicken feet in batches and deep-fry until the batter is
golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Have a lid ready in the
event of splattering oil. Serve immediately and add a
sprinkling of sea salt if needed. (Alternatively, skip the
batter and fry the feet as-is. Dress in more soy sauce
and chile oil, as desired.)
What do they eat in space?
At the beginning of the 1960's, space food was bite-sized or placed in aluminum tubes.
The food was prepared this way so that they wouldn't be too heavy or take up too much
space. From the 1970's, during the Apollo period, the number of space food items
began to increase. Currently, there are about 150 different types of food. The meals are
very similar to the meals we eat on Earth.
Space foods are in plastic containers. Some space foods can resume their consistency
by adding cold or hot water, while others can be heated up in the oven. Foods such as
fruits, bread and nuts can be eaten just as they are. When drinking liquids, a straw is
used to suck the liquid out of a sealed package. This is done so that it will not spill or
possibly cause any damage to machines.
At the International Space Station, 300 different types of food are planned to be on the
menu.
Slurp Loud, Slurp Proud
While you probably consider slurping
noodles to be rude, this is not the case in
Japan. In fact, slurping is not only
acceptable, but encouraged, as it's
believed to improve the noodles' flavour
and considered to be evidence that you
enjoyed your meal.
Did You Know!
In early Christianity, meat and
dairy products were avoided
during certain times of the year,
but today, the most well-known
and holiest dietary practice is the
consumption of bread and wine
—sometimes replaced by grape
juice—during Holy Communion
in the Protestant tradition or the
Eucharist, in the Catholic
tradition.
The symbolism of bread and
wine began in Christ’s time,
when these were very common
foods. Jesus, during the Last
Supper, took the bread and
“broke it and said, ‘This is My
body, which is for you; do this in
remembrance of Me.’ In the
same way, after supper, He took
the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the
new covenant in My blood; do
this as often as you drink it, in
remembrance of Me.’”
And so communion or the
Eucharist has been continued in
the Christian church in
remembrance of Jesus Christ.
Food and Religion
Judaism
In Judaism, foods are divided into two groups—kosher, which is allowed, and treif,
which is forbidden.
According to the Tora, only animals which chew and have cloven hooves are
permitted for eating, and four animals are expressly forbidden as food—the hare,
camel, hyrax, and pig. Also forbidden are insects and reptiles.
In addition to this, even kosher animals must be slaughtered using a specific
process for the meat to be considered acceptable for use by the Jewish people.
Because the Torah prohibits the consumption of blood, all blood must be removed
from the meat through soaking, salting, or broiling before consumption. Because
of the difficulty in completely removing blood from it, the liver is not eaten.
Meat and dairy products may not be eaten together, and must be kept separate.
Interestingly, utensils, plates, bowls, and even sinks and dishwashers can inherit a
“meat” or “dairy” status through prolonged contact with either type of food. For
example, if a bowl was used to contain milk, and then that bowl was placed in the
dishwasher, that dishwasher rack would inherit the “milk” status. It could not, then,
be used to clean a dish that had been exposed to meat. The two, and anything that
touches them, must always be kept separate under Jewish law.
All 35 plant-based foods are kosher except for wine and other grape products
produced by non-Jews.
THE DRINK OF THE GODS
Beer was among the many gifts
of the gods granted to humanity
in the early days of the world.
According to the myth, the god
Osiris himself gave humanity
the gifts of culture and taught
them the art of agriculture; at
this same time, he also
instructed them in the craft of
brewing beer. No actual single
story relates this event,
however, and the origin of beer
in Egypt is often - inaccurately -
given as the story known as
The Destruction of Mankind.
However, this story, which dates
from the New Kingdom of
Egypt (c. 1570-1069 BCE),
makes clear that beer was
already known to the gods. No
mention 41 is made of the gods
creating alcohol in the tale - it is
Thousands of years ago, ancient
Egyptians left evidence of their love for
food. Well-preserved wall paintings and
carvings have been discovered on tombs
and temples, depicting large feasts and a
variety of foods. Many of these ancient
foods are still eaten in Egyptian
households today. Peas, beans,
cucumbers, dates, figs, and grapes were
popular fruits and vegetables in ancient
times. Wheat and barley, ancient staple
crops, were used to make bread and beer.
Fish and poultry were also popular. Dried
fish was prepared by cleaning the fish,
coating the pieces with salt, and placing
them the sun to dry. Fasieekh (salted,
dried fish) remained a popular meal in
Egypt as of 2000.

Strange but true
Strange but true: Even if you generally eat a healthy diet,
consuming fast food can increase your risk for depression,
according to a Public Health Nutrition study of nearly 9,000
participants. In fact, those who eat greasy burgers, hot dogs, and
fries are 51 percent more likely to develop depression that those
who don't indulge. Thankfully for those who only hit up the drive
through once in awhile, the researchers observed a doseresponse
relationship between the blues and the burgers. "The
more fast food you consume, the greater the risk of depression,"
explains Almudena Sánchez-Villegas, lead author of the study.
The takeaway here: Try to limit your fast food habit to once or
twice per month at the very most. Or better yet, stick to one of
these healthy fast food restaurants when you need to grab grub
on the run.
If you're an avid Eat This, Not That! reader, you probably have a
pretty good idea how many calories are in your go-to fast food
order. But the majority of folks aren't as knowledgeable,
according to a Harvard Medical School report. To come to this
finding, researchers asked 1,877 adults, 330 school age children
and 1,178 adolescents dining at Burger King, Subway, Wendy's,
KFC, Dunkin' Donuts, and McDonald's how caloric they thought
their meals were. Compared with the actual figures, participants
underestimated their meal's calorie content by 175 calories, 259
calories, and 175 calories, respectively. If the calorie information
is printed on the menu, give it a peek and look for something
with 500 calories or less. (At BK that's might mean ordering a
Whopper Jr. Sandwich, a side salad with half a dressing packet
and a water.)
Clean Your Plate... Or Don't
In Japan and India, cleaning one's plate is
seen as honouring your host, expressing
how much you enjoyed the meal. But this
isn't true everywhere. In China, for
example, it's seen as a message that
your host didn't feed you enough, and it's
considered rude to not leave at least a bit
of uneaten food on the plate.
Fish is Never Cheesy
Most North Americans think
nothing of adding grated
Parmesan to a plate of shrimp
linguine, or some other type of
seafood pasta, but this is
unheard of in Italy, where the
idea of combining cheese and
seafood is seen as a culinary
Chopsticks: Did you know?
1) Using chopsticks involves over 30 joints and 50 muscles in the fingers, wrist, arm,
shoulder as well as thousands of nerves.
2) The Chinese use 45 billion chopsticks annually.3
3) February 6th is National Chopstick Day.
4) Almost one third of the world uses chopsticks every day, about as many as use a knife
and fork.
5) Silver chopsticks were used to test toxicity in food in ancient China. Poison will make
silver chopsticks turn black so the royal family uses silver chopsticks to tip them off on the
plans of assassins and prevent assassination.
6) 80 percent of chopsticks made in Japan are made in the little city of Obama, named like
President Obama, population about 32,000.
7) The fear of chopsticks is called “Consecotaleophobia.”
Right Hand Man
Many Middle Eastern cultures
encourage eating with one's hands,
but that doesn't mean all hands are
created equal. In fact, the right hand
is reserved for handling food, and
reaching for food with the left hand
is considered to be an insult to one's
host.
Iraq, officially known as the Republic of Iraq, is a country in Western Asia,
bordered by Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast,
Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest and Syria to the west.
Iraq is located in southwestern Asia, in the heart of the Middle East. Its land
area is comparable in size to California. There are four distinct land regions in
Iraq. The Delta region is a broad plain in the southeast. To the west are the
Steppe-Desert Plains, made up of sand and stony plains. The north region,
between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, is a fertile area of grassy flatlands
and rolling hills. The Zagros Mountains rise steeply in the northeast.
The climate in Iraq is as varied as the different regions, ranging from tropical
in the east and southeast, to dry and desert-like in the west. The north is
pleasant during summer months and freezing in the winter months. On
average, Iraq is a dry country, even in the fertile lands between the rivers. In
the summer, a dry, dusty wind called the shamal blasts through the country
with dust storms, lasting for several days.
Since the country is so dry, there are few plants, except for the date palm,
known for its fruit (dates). In fact, more than 80 percent of the world's date
supply is grown in Iraq.
Islam
Similarly, Islam also has lawful and unlawful foods, which are designated,
respectively, as halal and haram.
The Quran forbids meats from animals which die of natural causes, the blood and
meat of pigs, and animals that have been dedicated to idols, or to any deity other
than Allah.
All meat must be properly prepared in order for it to be halal. The animal must not
suffer, and must not see the blade used in the process. It must also be slaughtered
while speaking the name of Allah.
All intoxicating drink is prohibited under Islamic dietary law.
Despite these regulations, Muslims are permitted to eat any food in times of
necessity, such as if they are starving. This is called the “law of necessity”. In this
way, drinks like wine and foods such as pork could be eaten in order to survive.
Because of the status of Islam as the second largest world religion, halal foods
make up a surprising 16 percent of worldwide trade. There may even be a halal
foods shop in your neighborhood!
Beyond 2016: The Future of Online Ordering
Online ordering is still progressing and major changes could be coming in the future.
Driverless Delivery
Could we see food being delivered via driverless cars? Yep - it’s possible. Google has
had their very own self-driving car in the works for quite some time now. These cars are
equipped with multiple sensors that allow them to detect people, vehicles, and other
objects that are up to two football fields away. While Google’s focus with driverless cars
is to make the roads safer, we could one day see these cars delivering our food!
Drone Delivery
Could food be delivered via drones? Yep - it’s possible and you could be looking to the
sky for your next meal. Online retailer, Amazon, plans to use drones to deliver packages
to customers with the introduction of Amazon Prime Air. Their goal is to use drones to
deliver packages to customers in 30 minutes or less. There’s no reason that food
delivery via drones can’t be next!
Hinduism
Diet in Hinduism is not as strictly regulated what we’ve seen in the Jewish or
Islamic traditions, but there are a number of fascinating practices.
No food is forbidden in ancient Hindu texts, but non-violence against all life is
recommended. The oldest Hindu text, the Rig Veda, is often interpreted as
denouncing the consumption of meat. Because of this, many Hindus prefer a
vegetarian or vegan diet, and methods of food preparation that are not harmful
to animals or to the environment.
Those Hindus who do consume meat prefer it slaughtered in the Jhatka method,
that is, killed instantly in a single strike rather than being left to suffer.
Particularly important to the Hindu tradition is a food called ghee—a type of
clarified butter. In Hindu culture, cows are sacred, and butter is the only animal
fat that many Hindus will consume. Ghee is used in religious rituals, burned in
sacred lamps. In Hindu mythology, Prajápati, Lord of Creatures, created ghee by
rubbing his hands together, pouring it into fire to create his progeny. When the
Vedic ritual of pouring ghee into fire is performed, it is a reenactment of creation.
What would we see if we took a peek into your refrigerator? Condiments? Takeout
containers? Something unrecognizably fuzzy? Don't be embarrassed -- that describes
the fridge shelves of many of us, whether we admit it or not. Maybe it's a busy life or
just a lack of cooking skills, but sometimes it's hard to whip up a homemade dinner (or
breakfast or lunch). Frozen entrees to the rescue!
Relying on frozen convenience foods is nothing new -- who actually invented them,
however, is a bit more contentious. Though credit is widely given to the Swanson
brothers, it took a combination of a stocking error at Swanson, a light bulb idea by
Swanson company salesman Gerry Thomas after a visit to Pan American Airways in
Pittsburgh and some smart marketing to give rise to the TV dinner.
Wheaties is a brand of General Mills breakfast cereal. It is well known for featuring
prominent athletes on the exterior of the package, and has become a cultural icon
in the USA. Primarily a wheat and bran mixture baked into flakes, it was introduced
in 1924.
Here are some fun facts about the cereal we've grown up with:
• The first athlete to appear on a Wheaties box – the back of the package – was
baseball great Lou Gehrig in 1934.
• The 1987 World Champion Minnesota Twins were the first team to appear on
the package.
• The first non-orange Wheaties box was released in 1992. The red and black
package honored the NBA Champion Chicago Bulls.
• In 1934, Aviator Elinor Smith became the first female to appear on the back of
the Wheaties box.
• Babe Didrikson became the first female athlete to appear on the Wheaties box
– the back of the package – in 1935.
• In 1926, Wheaties pioneered the singing radio commercial with “Have You
Tried Wheaties?”
• Wheaties sponsored the first televised commercial sports broadcast when, on
August 29, 1939, NBC presented a baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds
and the Brooklyn Dodgers for some 500 owners of television sets in New York
City.
• The first athlete to appear on the front of a Wheaties box was decathlon gold
medalist Bob Richards in 1958.
• The first woman to appear on the front of a Wheaties box was gold medal
gymnast Mary Lou Retton in 1984.
• The first race car driver to appear on the front of a Wheaties box was Dale
Earnhardt in 1997.
• The first football player to appear on the front of a Wheaties box was Walter
Payton in 1986.
In parts of
Kentucky, eating
squirrel brains is
considered a
delicacy. But
doctors say
some squirrels
could carry
Creutzfeldt-
Jakob disease,
better known as
mad-cow
disease, which
zombie-fies you
by eating holes
in your brains.
You most
probably won't
eat lion not
because it's not
legal -- because
it is.
Oh, nothing much, just a poisonous
species of an icky looking, hairy spider
that is deep-fried till perfection. That’s
right! In Cambodia, the Thai Zebra
Tarantula, which is about the size of a
human hand, is a common delicacy.
These can be found everywhere in
Cambodia- from street-side vendors to
expensive restaurants. The tarantulas
are pan-fried with garlic and a pinch of
salt. It is crispy on the outside and
gooey on the inside. Most people only
eat the legs and upper head, which is
said to be extremely crispy, but the
brave-hearted also eat the abdomen.
Do you remember fighting from breath
every time you passed by a science lab
with ammonia and sulfur? Now imagine
eating it. Century eggs or millennium
eggs are a Chinese dish in which the
eggs of quail, chicken, and duck are
covered in ashes, clay salt and
preserved for months together. The
insides of the egg decompose and form
a greenish jelly-like mixture which is
then served straight on your plate. Their
taste is extremely strong but the dish is
very well liked in China.
The East- Asians do love their insects and how. This
Japanese food item of Wasp Crackers is exactly what it
sounds like. Wasps are caught, boiled to death, dried and
then simply mixed into a batter or dough of crackers.
Imagine a chocolate chip cookie but instead of chocolate
chips, you have wasps! Wasp crackers are extremely
famous in Japan and are extremely cheap too. These
Wasp Crackers have created quite the buzz around the
global food market recently.
Not all the exotic food items are from the east. Some
bizarre food items from Europe can also shock you for
their ingredients. Haggis is a dish from Scotland. It is a
savory pudding containing sheep’s liver, heart, and lungs.
This is mixed with some chopped onions, spices etc and
then again, encased in the stomach of the sheep and
simmered. Although this dish doesn’t sound appealing, it
is said to have great texture and taste, two things that
food connoisseurs are always on the lookout for.
Balut is a duck meat dish. Now, eating ducks is
completely normal and people from all around the world
eat duck meat. But this dish serves duck with a twist.
Balut is a dish served mainly in the Philippines which is
basically fertilized duck egg. The eggs are served with a
hole and they contain a grown duck embryo. To perfectly
get the taste, you have to pierce the duck eggs first and
drink all the liquid inside it and then break the shell and
Competitive eating, or speed eating, is an activity in which participants compete
against each other to consume large quantities of food in a short time period.
Don "Moses" Lerman is known as having the fastest
hands in competitive eating. This was never more clear
than in a one-on-one baked beans title match with Leon
Feingold. Lerman downed six pounds of beans in one
minute and 47 seconds. Lerman also recently
performed well at the Broadway at the Beach
Steeplechase, trailing only slightly behind Dale Boone
for a second place finish. The butter and jalapeno
pepper champion still has many meals left in his career.
Fans have been asking for a three-way bean eat-off
between Don, Dale Boone and Sonya Thomas in baked
beans. Until this happens, the world will not know who
is the planet's fastest baked bean eater.
Joey Chestnut is the greatest eater is history. That is not
empty editorializing or bloviating. That is empirical fact.
Members of the media and members of the scientific
community are warmly invited to conduct their own
independent analysis; MLE is confident that you will come
to the same conclusions. Chestnut defeated Kobayashi at
the 2007 Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating
Contests to return the Mustard Yellow Belt to the United
States. That victory was the start of an unprecedented
eight-year run at the top of the Nathan’s Hot Dog World;
Chestnut was undefeated at the event he made his own
through 2014. He regained the title in the 2016
Championship to earn his ninth title. He also holds the
world hot dogs eating record—an incredible 73.5 Nathan’s
Famous hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, at the time of
writing.
website that coincides with this book to help you along the way.
In addition the providing helpful information, our website also provides
Building Memories
Growing up on a farm and the life I remember seems quite distant from what we
experience today. Back then, everyone sitting around the dinning room table was a
regular nightly occurance. In addition, and to show my age, I don't remember there
being very many outside distractions. Talk around the table consisted of family matters
and everyone was expected to be a part. Often times, long after dinner was over
members of the family remained at the table talking.
For better or worse, today's family dinners are typically quite different. We struggle with
getting the kids off the video games, getting them to discuss their interestes (aside from
video games), and then often struggle to keep them at the table long enough to just
finish their food, let alone stick around for conversation.
I'm not saying this book can put a stop to today's family struggles or alter the attention
span of their children. But, it does offer a vialbe solution for at least one night a week
and give parents a topic of discussion that not only involves the kids but also provides
an educational, friendly, learning experience that they may remember forever.
