ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr. Yogendra Kumar Saxena is a Bio-chemical engineer and working in the field
Environmental engineering since 1977. He is a known personality in governmentregulatory
institutions as well as industries of India, and presently in-charge of
Environment management division of Ambuja Cements Limited as Sr. Vice
President. His interest while working in cement industry could never restrict
himto routine work and he was always keenly involved with formal and nonformal
environmental education.
His desire for environmental education began during his association as United
Nations Volunteer between 1984-1990 at UNDP, Jamaica, WI. He was associated
with the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST), Kingston, Jamaica.
In fact, Dr. Saxena has completed his Ph.D recently on his studies of “Cement
Dust Pollution and Reclamation of Mined Area”. He has published/presented
more than 80 papers/articles in national and international conferences / journals
“Environment Explained – Meaning and Definitions of terms and themes”, a
glossary of environmental terms. He has worked on a theme of Green Purchasingfor
Sustainability since 1995 and this was appreciated by many industry associations
and business schools.
He was also a Stakeholder Council Member of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI),
Netherlands and developed environmental indicators for sustainability reporting
guidelines G3. He had an unparalelled career as an Environmentalist culminating
in the “Best Environmental Manager Award” of Centre for Science and Environment
(CSE), New Delhi.
This is a pictorial compilation of Dr. Saxena's own rise from obscurity and his
personal and professional struggles and successes. With characteristic modesty,
Dr. Saxena ascribes his achievements to the influence of his teachers and mentors.
PREFACE
Today, when I look back at my life I feel the beauty of facing
difficulties and hardships and thought to pen down the milestones of
my life. This book is a collection of photographs with the story of
personal triumphs and tribulations.
Eclipsed or Illumined? That was the only question; when I sat down to
compile this book. Sometimes I thank almighty for giving me all the
opportunities at hand and sometimes I feel lack of guidance in my life.
So, what would have happened if I had people, affectionate with my
success, or else was I able to make maximum of my abilities. That's why
it's tricky to answer Eclipsed or Illumined!
It is intended for the people who know me closely, for the youth of India
who do not have the courage to face challenges of life and also for the
disappointed youngsters who wish to pursue a career in the field of
environment management. This is also for the individuals who dream
big.
When I used to walk the streets, the thought of a Clean India, Green
India and Developing India came and clashed. And then I made a
personal and professional commitment to myself. I resolved that my
efforts will be for the cause of sustainable development.
Environment management was never an easy task. At every moment, it
was a challenge to inform each and every minus point of the industry to
the higher management and convince them for an action.
I am looking forward towards new challenges, and changes for
sustainable growth. I wish to reform the society, to the best of my
ability. I wish to make people aware of the problems that can attack
society and which will be much bigger than even the economic slow
down.
I wish to explain that the degradation of environment has a direct,
instead of and indirect impact on human beings. And this impact will
be seen when unbearable disasters will occur on our planet earth. I also
wish to explain the importance of Environment - the importance of
land, water, air, sea, trees, animals and the 'balance of ecosystem'. My
wish is to serve my country and save it and the world from complete
destruction, if I will get a chance.
I do hope this pictorial compilation of my journey since birth will be of
interest not only to my well wisher but also to younger
environmentalist.
BORN AND BROUGHT UP
1955 – 1973
I was born and brought up in Bareilly, a noted
industrial town of Uttar Pradesh. My primary
education was at Zila Parishad School, where I got a
chance to meet Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime
Minister of India.
During secondary education at Government Inter
College, Bareilly, I had a flair for acting. I enacted in
many plays and some of the roles became very close to
my heart. It turned out to be more then just a hobby for
me. A collection of certificates is from those plays. I was
also an active member of Scouts and National Cadet
Corps.
I contested for and won the title of General Secretary of
Physics Department while pursuing B.Sc. from Bareilly
College, Bareilly in 1973. For a brief stint, I joined
Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. In fact,
throughout this period, I was a mediocre student.

THE DECISION OF MY LIFE
1974 – 1980
After Graduation, I completed a Degree program in
Bio-Chemical Engineering from Harcourt Butler
Technological Institute, Kanpur. Late Mr. Dinesh
Saxena, my classmate since sixth standard persuaded
me to become an engineer. I got full support from my
parents and late Dr. Adya, an orthopedic surgeon & my
well wisher for completing the studies. Once I settled at
HBTI, my thoughts started to soar. I wanted excellence
in academics and started dreaming big.
Despite being away from home I didn't have
homesickness because of being regularly in touch with
my sister Manjari and brother- in- law Mr. S. C. Saxena
in Kanpur, who looked after me very well and then I
determined to come up to the level of the competent
world as I knew my father had reposed great hopes in
me.
I established an Association of Biochemical Engineers
and Food Technologists at HBTI as well as worked as
LIC Agent for a short period. Later, the pull of
education was strong enough to take me to Mumbai
and I took admission at the University Department of
Chemical Technology, Mumbai for Master's Degree in
Fermentation Technology. This was the time; I
developed a hobby for poetry writing.
There was no scope of Biotechnology in India, during
that period and having fascination for environment; I
switched over and took effluent treatment as an elective
subject. Late Prof. Tamhane, my guide, was a little
worried due to non-availability of Faculty in this field.
I used to visit the effluent treatment plant at Dadar,
Mumbai to learn the subject. Many students of IIT,
Delhi were working on Cellulose degradation, but I
chose to work on lignin degradation, a waste from pulp
and paper industry. Professor Tamhane was very
happy and also suggested me to take classes for M.Sc.
(Tech) for first year students, when I was in Second
year.
Even after completing my Master's I continued my
research on Microbial Degradation of Lignin for
Doctorate but discontinued in the face of my father's
interest in my marriage.

THE BREAK THROUGH
1980-1984
I started my career from Mumbai in 1980. My first job
was with Patel Brothers Engineering and Services,
Mumbai, a consulting firm and looked after erection
and commissioning of Effluent Treatment Plants.
Theory was put to use and I learnt the in-depth of
effluent treatment from Mr. Munish Mathur, my
colleague.
The working knowledge was mainly given by many
contract persons, which included electricians,
plumbers and welders. After a few months, I shifted to
Central Board for the Prevention and Control of Water
Pollution (now known as Central Pollution Control
Board), New Delhi.
Government job was a luxury at that time and due to
costly accommodation in Mumbai, I had to shift to
Delhi to join CPCB. I attended several Short Courses in
the area of Environmental Management, Air Pollution
Control and Meteorology and put in my best to pacify
my curiosity for this field.
But I was not happy in this job because, there was
hardly any work at that time, as this was the beginning
of regulatory framework in India. Late Dr. Nilay
Choudhry, Chairman, Central Board, appreciated my
knowledge and offered a special assignment for
preparation of Comprehensive Industry Document on
Dairy Industry.
After continuing for few months with Central Board, I
took over as Manager – Environmental Engineering
with Industrial Consulting Bureau (ICB) Ltd., New
Delhi and completed effluent treatment plant for apple
juice concentrate unit of HPMC, Parwanoo, H. P. and
Hindustan Zinc Limited, Debari, Udaipur as well as
some other studies for Dabur, Sahibabad and
Indraprastha Thermal Power Plant, New Delhi etc.
I learnt from my failures and achievements and
completed two comprehensive industry documents for
Thermal Power Plants & Fermentation Industries. It is
important to mention here that I was the first one to
prepare Minimum National Standards (MINAS) for
Thermal Power Plants. In-fact I could complete these
documents due to timely guidance by Late Dr. R. N.
Bhattacharya, CPCB.
I had an opportunity to meet honourable
M. Hidayutulla, Vice President of India and Mrs. Indira
Gandhi Prime Minister of India during Inaugural
Ceremony of International Seminar on Management of
Environmental Problems in Pulp and Paper Industries
on Feb. 24, 1982. In fact both these dignitaries signed
their photographs for me in the proceeding book of this
seminar.
The Institute of Energy Management, Bombay
presented “Best Paper Award” at Annual Conference
on Air Pollution for paper presented on Environmental
Hazards from Power Plants in 1982.
December 4, 1982 was a memorable year for India
because it was the last day of ASIAD 82 Games and
beginning of second phase of my life. I got married the
same day with Alka, a resident of Paschim Vihar, New
Delhi. I am thankful to the matrimonial column of
Hindustan Times for this wonderful match and the
efforts of my elder brother-in-law Late Mr. M. P.
Saxena, who was instrumental in this alliance. Every
one in the family was happy. A new phase of life began
with the partner who did everything for me in a
beautiful way.

CHOICE OF CHALLENGE
1984 - 1990
ICB saw downfall during 1982-84 and with Almighty
God's blessing, I took an assignment of UNDP as United
Nations Volunteers in January 1984.
My friend Late Mr. Dinesh Saxena, Ministry of Education,
suggested me to apply for this assignment and I was lucky
enough to get it. Mr. P. Swaroop, UNV Coordinator at
UNDP, Delhi motivated me for taking up this assignment
because as a young man I was not able to make up my mind
to go out of the country.
I was associated with the College of Arts, Science and
Technology (CAST), Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies.
Jamaica blessed me with Chirag, my first son, in 1987.
During this tenure 1984-90 with CAST/UNDP, Jamaica my
affection for Formal and Non-Formal Environmental
Education began. Dr. Alfred Sangster, Principal CAST and
Mr. George Ropar, Head Science Department, CAST gave
me free hand, confidence and strength to work in a new
country, miles away from India.
As a token of appreciation for untiring efforts in promoting
the cause of Environmental Education and Consciousness
within CAST and the wider Jamaican Community, Science
Department awarded “Plaque” to me in 1986.
The United Nations Organization in Jamaica awarded me
“Certificate of Merit” in 1987 for outstanding dedicated
service in promoting the United Nations during
International Year of Peace and for activities on
Environment and Peace in 1986. It was given for organizing
'A tree for peace' ceremony at CAST as well as Mr. Seaga,
Prime Minister Jamaica planted a tree at Jamaica House on
behalf of the Caribbean, which he represented at global
network. I also organized a Peace Pageant, first of its kind in
Kingston by Peace Maker Players, a group of Jamaicans and
expatriates and the proceeds were donated to UNICEF.
I was also only expatriate member of Inter Agency Advisory
Committee for Jamaica Country Environmental Profile,
Government of Jamaica, 1987.
During this assignment, I developed a 3-year Diploma
Program in Chemical / Environmental Technology. I was
involved in the development of Laboratory, Teacher's
Training as well as many activities in CAST and throughout
Jamaica for non-formal environment education.
CAST appreciated my efforts and awarded Special
Recognition Award for the environmental activities at
College and for wider Jamaican community in 1987. I also
organized a UNEP - IEEP Program for the Caribbean in
collaboration with UNESCO in 1988.
In Jamaica, I was famous as Saxy Environmental Engineer
due to my activities in the field of Non-formal Environment
Education and my surname. The support of Dr. Brenda
Mc. Sweeney, Resident Representative, UNDP, Jamaica
throughout this period was a motivation for a volunteer like
me. In fact, Dr. Mc. Sweeny had also served as Resident
Representative of UNDP, Delhi in the recent past. This
support and work is reflected in many photographs of this
publication. The knowledge gained during UNDP
assignment with a western touch was reflected in the work
taken up after joining Ambuja Cement in 1990.
Organized a Seminar 'Man Vs Environment' at CAST, Kingston,
Jamaica on World Environment Day, June 5, 1984. Dr. Alfred Sangster,
in recent times in the Western Hemisphere, made landfall on the northeast coast of
Mexico near la Pesca. Gilbert's winds measured in excess of 200 mph (320 km/h) and the
storm recorded the lowest barometric pressure ever in Western Hemisphere. Glibert's
near linear track through the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico brought the storm over
Jamaica, the northeast Yucatan Peninsula, and finally over the northeastern Mexican
Coast. The Yucatan landfall marked the first time since 1969 that a category 5 hurricane
had made landfall in the Western Hemisphere.
Looking back it has to be said that Jamaica was not properly prepared for the hurricane.
For one thing, many persons did not believe that a hurricane would strike the island, not
having had one for quite a few years. There were also some young people who said that
they wanted to be in a hurricane or they had never experienced one before. Little did they
know what was in store for them! In fact the last major hurricane was Charlie of August
17, 1951 some 37 years earlier.
Monday morning September 12, 1988 was ominously quiet. There were however dark
clouds coming in from the east of the island. St. Thomas and Portland had already been
battered. Soon the wind started to blow and the storm gathered in intensity. As Alka and
myself watched from the second floor of our Oxford Manor Apartments. Chirag was one
year old and we both were more worried about him. It was clear that this was to be no
ordinary storm. The wind tore at the trees, shattered windows and moved roofs as if they
were cardboard. With the wind came the driving rain which came through crevices and
holes which never existed. The first blow was bad enough but when the eye passed over
the Oxford Manor Apartments there was again an ominous calm for 30 minutes. A quick
look around the New Kingston area revealed the extent of the damage so far. But worse
was to come. The wind returned even stronger and over the next few hours, it tore off the
zinc roofing on study and living room areas as well as the upper level of house.
THE JOURNEY WITH GROWING AMBUJA
1990-2008
As going to Jamaica was not an easy task. Settling back in
India was not easy either. I joined Ambuja for Himachal
Project in 1990 and also looked after the Environment
Management of First Plant at Ambujanagar, Gujarat. I had
put in my best efforts to set up the Environment
Management Division for the company and then Parag, my
second son was born in 1991.
My first success was getting the HP Project cleared and
company got the first National Award for the Prevention
Control of Pollution for Ambujanagar from the Ministry of
Environment and Forests.
Later in 1992, I shifted to Delhi to look after the Corporate
Environment of ACL. I remember Mr. R. N. Jain, my boss at
that time and Mr. Sanjay Jain, my colleague both persuaded
me to buy a house in Noida in 1993. This helped me in my
early settlement.
I was associated for Environmental Clearances for Ambuja's
new Cement Plants & Mines, Cement Grinding Units, and
Bulk Cement Terminals as well as its various expansion
projects. It was not a smooth journey initially but I could
overcome the difficulties because of the vision of
Management especially Sekhsaria Ji and Neotia Ji.
Besides many awards for which I worked for company, the
Centre for Science & Environment, New Delhi in 2003
adjudged me “The Best Environment Manager in Indian
Industry” under the Green Rating, a Government of India &
UNDP Project Constituted for Indian Industry to recognize
Manager's contribution in Greening the Industry. This
survey was based on environmental performance of Indian
Industry, manager's contribution from 74 nominations of
Indian companies.
This year was also year of achievement and on behalf of the
company I received National Award for prevention of
Pollution from Honorable Shri Bhairon Singh Shaikhawat,
the Vice Preseident of India on June 5, 2003 the World
Environment Day for the Cement Grinding Unit, Ropar.
This was also a period of growth and personal achievements.
I authored a Book “Environment Explained – Meanings and
Definitions of Terms and Themes” in 2004 which was
released by Dr. Pradipto Ghosh, Secretary Ministry of
Environment and Forests, New Delhi.
The Paryavaran Sachetak Dal, Ghaziabad presented
Paryavaran Mitra Samman Award in the field of Writings on
Environmental Issues for Preservation and Control of
Pollution & Awareness and The Greentech Foundation,
New Delhi gave Environment Excellence Special Award in
the field of Environmental Management & Education in
2004.
In 2007, the Doctorate Degree was awarded for my work on
Cement Dust Pollution and Reclamation of Mined Area.
This study was based on six plants studied for physical and
botanical parameters in the Himachal region in the vicinity
of H.P. Unit of ACL. The support of my colleagues especially
Bijon, Kameshwar, Durga, Vivek and Kutti was with me
throughout this study period.
These 18 years with Ambuja was the period of its growth
from 0.7 to almost 20 MTPA today and many changes.
Throughout this period Mr. Neotia stood like a pillar behind
me. The people changed, The management changed, Holcim
took over and in all the ups and downs I got complete support
from Mr. Anil Singhvi & Mr. A.L. Kapur.

Annual Report 2002-03
Gujarat Ambuja Cements Limited
I am thankful to Mr. N.S. Sekhsaria, Managing Director,
Gujarat Ambuja Cements Limited for giving the highlights
of the Award in the Annual Report 2002-03 on page 29-30. In
fact, this was the first time that details about an individual
were highlighted in the Annual Report. The excerpts from
the Annual Report are given below:
Last year was also a year of personal recognition for one
proud member of the Ambuja family. The Centre for Science
& Environment, New Delhi has instituted an award for the
Best Environment Manager of the year under its Green
Rating of Indian Industry project. The project which is
backed by the Government of India and is funded by the
United Nations Development Programme, rates Indian
Companies on the basis of their environmental performance.
The Project also seeks to highlight the importance of the
Environment Manager. After all, the onus of ensuring that a
company adopts environmentally safe practices lies with the
Environment Manager.
In order to recognize the efforts of the environment manager,
CSE, in a first of its kind in the country, set up an award for
the best environment manager in the country. The award is
not only recognition of the industry, but also a symbol of
appreciation of the manager's efforts in guiding his company
towards better environmental standards. Mr. Y.K. Saxena, of
the Ambuja family was the proud recipient of this
prestigious award. Modest as ever, he dedicated the award
to his teammates and everyone at Ambuja who has worked
so hard towards achieving our environmental objectives.
Being responsible of Corporate Environment, it was
my responsibility to make sure that the plants
and mines are in better working conditions from
environment point of view. With the support of all
Environmental In charge’s of Units and my colleagues
achieve the best for the company.
During my research my colleagues Atul, New Delhi,
me a lot.
No doubt, the credit of my success throughout the stay
mainly Shailendra, Atul, Manish, Lovish, Subramanian
Infact, Subramanian’s help in typing the thesis and
Shruti’s commitment in compiling this book will
always be in my heart
T
EPILOGUE
his is my humble effort to share my experiences in
t h e f i e l d o f E n v i r o n m e n t M a n a g e m e n t a n d
Sustainability with my friends, colleagues, compatriots
and many associates with whom I have worked either
for company or shared the moment in various forums
through pictorial biography. It's a Retrospective of
events and glories.
Sometimes, I feel that the only thing I have missed
throughout this journey is mainly not working with a
mentor.
Any suggestions for improvement or emendation will
be greatly appreciated. I am sure, this might change my
attitude where-ever I am lacking.
At the end, once again, I would like to express, my
sincere gratitude to all who have stood by me
throughout this journey.
