What is TRUVADA for PrEP?
TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis)
is a prescription medicine that is used together
with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk
of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for
HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting
HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1,
talk openly with your healthcare provider about
your sexual health.
Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions
about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice
safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance
of sexual contact with body fl uids. Never reuse or
share needles or other items that have body fl uids
on them.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
What is the most important information I
should know about TRUVADA for PrEP?
Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP:
® You must be HIV-negative before you start
taking TRUVADA for PrEP. You must get
tested to make sure that you do not already
have HIV-1. Do not take TRUVADA to reduce the
risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confi rmed
to be HIV-negative.
® Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection
in a person who has recently become
infected. If you have fl u-like symptoms, you
could have recently become infected with
HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had
a fl u-like illness within the last month before
starting or at any time while taking TRUVADA
for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection
include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches,
headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash,
night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in
the neck or groin.
While taking TRUVADA for PrEP:
® You must continue to use safer sex
practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP
may not keep you from getting HIV-1.
® You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking
TRUVADA for PrEP:
® Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months.
® If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell
your healthcare provider right away.
® To further help reduce your risk of getting
HIV-1:
® Know your HIV status and the HIV status of
your partners.
® Get tested for other sexually transmitted
infections. Other infections make it easier
for HIV to infect you.
® Get information and support to help reduce
risky sexual behavior, such as having fewer
sex partners.
® Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing
doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1
infection.
® If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need
more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat
HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete
treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take
only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to
treat over time.
TRUVADA can cause serious side effects:
® Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection.
TRUVADA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have
HBV and stop taking TRUVADA, your HBV may
suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking TRUVADA
without fi rst talking to your healthcare provider,
as they will need to monitor your health.
Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?
Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you:
® Already have HIV-1 infection or if you do
not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1
positive, you need to take other medicines with
TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not
a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1
and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become
harder to treat over time.
® Also take certain medicines to treat hepatitis B
infection.
What are the other possible side effects of
TRUVADA for PrEP?
Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include:
® Kidney problems, including kidney failure.
Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to
check your kidneys before and during treatment
with TRUVADA. If you develop kidney problems,
your healthcare provider may tell you to stop
taking TRUVADA.
® Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic
acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical
emergency that can lead to death. Tell your
healthcare provider right away if you get these
symptoms: weakness or being more tired than
usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath
or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and
vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or
lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat.
® Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can
lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right
away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white
part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored”
urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several
days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain.
Please see Important Facts about TRUVADA for PrEP including important warnings on the following page.

I’m passionate,
not impulsive.
help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 when taken every day and used
together with safer sex practices.
through sex.
Ask your doctor about your risk of getting HIV-1 infection and if
fractures. Your healthcare provider may do
tests to check your bones.
Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA
for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain,
headache, and decreased weight. Tell your
healthcare provider if you have any side effects
that bother you or do not go away.
What should I tell my healthcare provider
before taking TRUVADA for PrEP?
® All your health problems. Be sure to tell your
healthcare provider if you have or have had
any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including
hepatitis.
® If you are pregnant or plan to become
pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can
harm your unborn baby. If you become
pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk
to your healthcare provider to decide if you
should keep taking TRUVADA.
® If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to
breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. If you become
HIV-positive, HIV can be passed to the baby in
breast milk.
® All the medicines you take, including
prescription and over-the-counter medicines,
vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA
may interact with other medicines. Keep a
list of all your medicines and show it to your
healthcare provider and pharmacist when
you get a new medicine.
® If you take certain other medicines with
TRUVADA, your healthcare provider may need
to check you more often or change your dose.
These medicines include certain medicines
to treat hepatitis C (HCV) infection.
CELEBRITY CORRESPONDENT
Mark
Zschiesche
Lips, the most prestigious drag
club/restaurant in the world, has
become an institution in New
York City and adding locations in
Fort Lauderdale, San Diego and
Atlanta. Owner Mark Zschiesche,
and his alter ego Yvonne Lame’,
is also no stranger to New York
nightlife. Often a frequent
visitor to Studio 54, sometimes
channeling Marilyn Monroe,
Zschiesche dreamed of having his
own establishment one day. And
now he has four!
Although Lips is filled to the brim
with famous and colorful queens,
it has more of a restaurant vibe
than that of a club. It caters to all, especially
for birthday parties, bachelorette parties and
straight women who want to have a night out on
the town and an experience of a lifetime.
Zschiesche currently is content in running Lips
and has put his heels in the closet; however, his
persona will always belong to Yvonne. Lips (227
East 56th in New York City) is open every day
until 11:30 (except Mondays).

What’s new at Lips since we last
spoke?
Hi, Darling. Not sure when we spoke
last, but Lips Florida just celebrated
our 10-year anniversary on November
13, and next year we will be opening
our grandest Lips to date in Chicago.
Do you have anything special
planned for the holiday season?
Lips has its annual Holiday
Spectacular Show, which is every
Tuesday in December, hosted by
Blackie Onasty. It’s a fun-filled show.
How many locations does Lips have
now? Any plans for any more -
maybe some internationally?
Lips has locations in NYC, San Diego,
Fort Lauderdale, and next fall there
will be a Lips in Chicago.
Please remind everyone of the
hours of operation.
Lips is open every day except
Mondays. Our queens need a break
from shaving their backs!
Is there a central message or
theme that Lips wishes its patrons
to walk away with?
To have fun. Lips is all about having
a good time. Most people come to
Lips to celebrate something special -
a birthday, getting married or just life.
Have a cocktail and a few laughs with
friends and a queen.
stop spraying her cheap perfume.
What’s the most “fabulous” thing
about Lips?
The most fabulous thing about Lips
is that it’s a fun place to work. Lips
has given livelihood to queens who
can make a good living and have fun.
That being said, it’s fun for all the
queens, the managers, the kitchen
staff and the guests, so with that
recipe it’s a recipe for success.
Are there ever any queen disputes
that have proved to be funny?
A dispute with a queen is never
funny, LOL! Once a queen tried to
stab another queen with a butter
knife. It was so funny; we all laughed
about it later. There was a queen was
was just spraying herself head to toe
in perfume. It got to be too much,
so the rest of the queens stopped
getting dressed with her. So Mama
Yvonne had to step in and tell her to

Aaron Paul
Talks Performing at the Bruce Lee Tribute,
The Glammy Awards, Isaac Mizrahi,
New Album DANCE, New Book and 2018!
I recently sat with pop
star Aaron Paul as he just
finished performing at
“Tribute to the Dragon,” an
event honoring the legendary
Bruce Lee in NYC. Known as
the lead singer in the Simon
Cowell-discovered boy band
World’s Apart, Aaron Paul is
a staple in the world of pop/
dance music and an iconic
performer in NYC nightlife.
Always a lot of fun to speak
with, Aaron Paul is a mover
and shaker in the world of
pop culture, and we discussed
all the incredible events he
has forthcoming for the end
of the year and into 2018.
What does this honor of the birthday
tribute to superstar icon Bruce Lee
mean to you?
OMG, I’m still gagging over this one! Mr.
Bruce Lee is a worldwide icon, and I’ve
been asked to sing and perform a special
tribute song at at his big birthday event
at the historic NYC Federal Hall. It’s just
crazy to me. They could have just asked
anyone to do this, but they chose me.
Bruce Lee’s legacy is so embedded in the
fabric of popular culture. As a kid, me
and my father and brothers watched his
movies every Sunday for hours. We knew
all the words, characters and Bruce Lee
signature moves and vocal noises, LOL.
And to fast forward, many years later I’m
gonna be singing for him. WOW. I am so
blessed. You’re gonna laugh, but I actually
feel a little emotional that I’m gonna do
this. It’s a real honor. They have asked
me to perform a remake of the 1974
disco classic hit “Kung Fu Fighting” by Carl
Douglas. I’m gonna do a 2018 mix of it
with Peter Tanico/E39 Productions. I can’t
wait. So much fun!

There’s a lot going on for you.
Tell us about your new release and
collaboration with British singer
Simon Bradshaw.
Yes, “Hand in My Pocket,” my duet
with this very talented U.K. artist.
One of the nicest guys you can ever
meet and work with! And I have to
tell you, I was scared shitless when
they approached me and asked me to
do this. And first I thought why me?
I said yes, and then I kept delaying
them [with] my vocals, cause I was
afraid I would let him down. But once
I started to record it I really got
into it. It’s such a fantastic song, one that
just instantly gets stuck in your mind.
Simon gave full freedom to do whatever I
wanted to on it. I sent him a shit load of
vocal tracks, because I really soared with
it. I know he must of thought I was bloody
crazy, LOL. He is an amazing songwriter
and musician. I’m gonna have three tracks
of his that I have written too, plus the
dance remix of “Hand in My Pocket,” which
my fave producer Peter Tanico/E39 has
done on my new album “DANCE” releasing
in early 2018.
You also had lunch with a famous
fashion designer. Tell us about it.
Yep, with the world-famous American
Isaac Mizrahi, fashion designer and hit
TV show “Project Runway” judge. I will
remember this day for the rest of my
life, for a couple of reasons: First, I was
over an hour late showing up, so I missed
the two courses of the lunch and made it
just in time for a little piece of dessert.
I was so embarrassed. I’m never late!
And somehow the forces decided that
this was the day I was gonna be late for
a lunch with a major fashion designer. I
was so frazzled and overwhelmed when I
arrived, and I was trying to act like all was
OK. LOL. Issac Mizrahi was so nice and
gracious. He paid for the lunch, and [was]
the most friendliest dude. Talking with
him, you kinda forget he is this fashion
icon. A real pleasure to meet and talk with.
Once again, I’m gonna say it publicly: So
sorry I was late, Isaac Mizrahi. Oh wow,
that can be a title of a song. Shit...I’m
gonna write it.
Congrats on your Glammy Awards double
nomination. Were you surprised?
Surprised isn’t even the word. I was
gobsmacked! Two nominations: Best Music
Video and Best Male Performer! Well, it’s
the first time the Glammys have looked
in my direction. I’ve waited years for
that, LOL. And to be recognized by my
community for my work just really touches
my heart. I’ve always considered myself
a performer, and to be in the Best Male
Performer category is a dream come true.
I feel good with just that! If I actually
win, I won’t know what to do with myself.
So many great male NYC artists have been
nominated too, and all totally deserve it.
I can’t wait to attend the awards show
in January 2018. I just got my outfit
yesterday. It’s killer and very Glammys.
Yay!
What’s next?
There is so much. And I also know that
there is gonna be so much hard work
ahead. But I’m ready and prepared. I think
everything I’ve worked for in my whole life
has prepared me for a fantastic for 2018.
With all these big events I’m doing and
the new album “DANCE,” new songs, new
music videos and also my book “I DON’T
CARE!” with Nathan James, my fashion
projects, hosting—it’s gonna be crazy
and one hell of a year! I am so excited. I
feel blessed, and I’m ready to take on the
world!
CELEBRITY CORRESPONDENT
Ginger Snap
One of the most known
queens in the New York
nightlife scene, Ginger
Snap, has been working
at Lips and Fire Island for
many years. She’s funny,
she’s entertaining and a real
sweetheart. After many years
of trying, I finally tracked her
down long enough to share
some revealing answers to
questions that will introduce
her to those who might not
be familiar with her.
Aside from drag, she
attended FIT and graduated
in the field of fashion design.
She has a great love for her
family, Broadway and the
community.
What motivated you to first do drag?
Well, it all started out with my friend in
1999 auditioning for a job at a restaurant
called Lips, and I went that night to show
support, and then she got the job. So I
would go every day after work to see her.
And then I I started getting the drag bug,
and I said, I think I could do this. Then
someone put me in drag, and I got the
job, and the rest was history. I got the
job, and drag became my life. I realized
how much I loved the stage..
How long have you been working at
Lips?
I have been working at Lips since 2000.
It is literally the longest job I ever had.
Before drag I went to FIT college and
graduated as a fashion design student.
What is the craziest experience you
ever had at Lips?
I have had so many crazy experiences
at Lips. There was one time I was
hosting Sunday brunch, and I came
out performing, and all the girls that
work there were staring at me, and it
was upsetting me, but I had to finish
the number. I then said on the mic,
“Girls, what’s up?” And they said, “Bitch
you forgot to draw on your eyebrows.”
Performing as Annie with no eyebrows.
God, there were so many other crazy
experiences.

Aside from drag, what are your
passions?
Well, aside from drag, I still love sewing.
I love putting together new characters
for Broadway brunch, for Fire Island
shows. I love the theatre honestly. I love
sitting there for two hours and being
entertained. And my other passion is for
my family. I am truly a typical Italian boy.
Sunday dinners!
Are there any new projects that you
are involved in?
Yes, there are a couple of things
happening. I put on a show in Fire Island
called “Ginger Snap’s Journey Through
Broadway.” I’m working on bringing it
to the stage soon. I’ll keep you guys
posted. And there is something else, but
I don’t want to jinx it.
What do you love best about doing
drag and working at Lips?
What I love most about drag is
expressing myself through a song or a
monologue. With everything happening
in the world I use drag as a platform to
inform people that it’s gonna be OK. If
I can have you sit through a show for an
hour or two and make you laugh, and
forget about all that crap that is going
on in your life, then I know I did my job.
Also, what I love about working at Lips
is that there are so many straight people
that visit us. I want them to realize that
we are not freaks; we are the same as
them. We love and feel things just the
same!
Instagram: officallygingersnap
Who is your biggest drag inspiration?
My inspiration for drag really is Barbra
Streisand from “Funny Girl.” I loved
her character in that movie. But my
inspirations change throughout the years.
Aside from Lips, where else can people
find you?
Right now I kinda took a little break from
the club scene. But I’m at Lips hosting
every Wednesday for Twisted Broadway
and every Sunday brunch for Broadway
Brunch, and summers I’m in Fire Island at
Cherry’s on the Bay doing some Dining
With the Divas on Mondays. Also you can
find me on the A train selling chocolate
for my drag career. LOL!
WHAT IS GENVOYA ® ?
GENVOYA is a 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine
used to treat HIV-1 in people 12 years and older who
weigh at least 77 pounds. It can either be used in
people who are starting HIV-1 treatment and have
never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who
are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose
healthcare provider determines they meet certain
requirements. These include having an undetectable
viral load (less than 50 copies/mL) for 6 months or
more on their current HIV-1 treatment. GENVOYA
combines 4 medicines into 1 pill taken once a day
with food. GENVOYA is a complete HIV-1 treatment
and should not be used with other HIV-1 medicines.
GENVOYA does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. To control
HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses,
you must keep taking GENVOYA. Ask your healthcare
provider if you have questions about how to reduce
the risk of passing HIV-1 to others. Always practice
safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of
sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share
needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
What is the most important information I
should know about GENVOYA?
GENVOYA may cause serious side effects:
• Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection.
GENVOYA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have
both HIV-1 and HBV and stop taking GENVOYA,
your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop
taking GENVOYA without first talking to your
healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor
your health.
Who should not take GENVOYA?
Do not take GENVOYA if you take:
• Certain prescription medicines for other
conditions. It is important to ask your healthcare
provider or pharmacist about medicines that should
not be taken with GENVOYA. Do not start a new
medicine without telling your healthcare provider.
• The herbal supplement St. John’s wort.
• Any other medicines to treat HIV-1 infection.
What are the other possible side effects
of GENVOYA?
Serious side effects of GENVOYA may also
include:
• Changes in your immune system. Your immune
system may get stronger and begin to fight infections.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new
symptoms after you start taking GENVOYA.
• Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your
healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to
check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney
problems, they may tell you to stop taking GENVOYA.
• Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic
acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical
emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare
provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness
or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain,
being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with
nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel
dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat.
• Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead
to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you
get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes
turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools,
loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or
stomach-area pain.
The most common side effect of GENVOYA is nausea.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that
bother you or don’t go away.
What should I tell my healthcare provider
before taking GENVOYA?
• All your health problems. Be sure to tell your
healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney
or liver problems, including hepatitis virus infection.
Ask your healthcare provider if GENVOYA is right for you.
• All the medicines you take, including
prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins,
and herbal supplements. Other medicines may
affect how GENVOYA works. Keep a list of all your
medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and
pharmacist. Ask your healthcare provider if it is safe to
take GENVOYA with all of your other medicines.
• If you take antacids. Take antacids at least 2 hours
before or after you take GENVOYA.
• If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It
is not known if GENVOYA can harm your unborn baby.
Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant
while taking GENVOYA.
• If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to
breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. HIV-1 can be passed to
the baby in breast milk.
Jola
‘Once You’ve Played in a Porcupine Costume,
Wearing a Mask Is a Stroll in the Park’
An accomplished and spirited force on international and U.S.
stages as one of two drummers accompanying the iconic punk
rocker Adam Ant, Jola is reverberating her way into musical history.
Although often an enigma, shrouded in mystery, Jola is absolutely
adored by fans. Her presence is marked by over-the-top, colorful
fashions standing out and glittering in the background behind the
beats. She often can be spotted wearing a sparkling mask while
performing, leaving an air of mystique surrounding her.
Aside from Jola’s spectacular appearance, she is a masterful
musician. Just by watching her play one can actually feel her
awareness, consciousness and exhilaration while stationed behind
her instrument. She seems to possess a musical empathy and an
understanding of what it takes to make the band sound its best.
She is also a regular blast to speak to and is
particularly kind to her fans.
Adam Ant, Jola and the band will be playing a sold-out show
on December 21 at the Roundhouse in Camden, and then will be
heading back to the U.S. early in the New Year for a historic festival
performance at the Honda Center in Anaheim with Boy George,
Nick Heyward, The Bangles and a host of other great performers.
COSTUME MADE BY CAROLINE WILDMAN

I learned to read music, as I wanted a
better understanding of different genres.
This later enabled me to study music,
which I did for three years and loved
it. I had two great drum tutors: Pete
Cater for jazz studies and Paul Elliott for
technique and fusion. These days, Pete
leads the Pete Cater Big Band and Paul
teaches and does sessions. Paul recently
came to Adam’s show when we played
Newcastle this year, and I popped round
to his recording studio while we were
in town. Both fantastic drummers and
down-to-Earth geezers.
Drummers, it seems, are the most
mysterious members of the band.
Yes, drummers tend to be the furthest
away from the audience, usually at the
back of the stage, so I think the physical
distance separating us from the audience
plays a part in creating any mystery.
Add to that the fact that the drum kit
obscures a drummer from the waist
down, then perhaps we do become these
shadowy figures with only half a torso.
What inspired you to play drums?
A process of trial and error. I was always
listening to music from a diverse range
of genres. Although I can sing, I wasn’t
interested in being a singer. Playing an
instrument intrigued me more. So I was
quite disappointed to find that I didn’t
feel comfortable or show any promising
level of competence with any of the
instruments that I tried to play. Apart
from keyboards, they didn’t interest me
either, so I had zero desire to improve.
From a regular band setup, there was
only the drums left to try. As soon as I
picked up a pair of drumsticks and sat
behind a drum kit, it felt right. And this
time, I had a feverish desire to learn
more. I taught myself the basics. Then
Since you tend to play with another
drummer, do you find yourself
competing for beats or just having
twice the fun on stage?
I joined Adam’s band knowing that he
wanted two drummers, so I knew what
was expected. It felt quite natural to
play with another drummer, and very
exhilarating. There’s a moment, during
our current arrangement of “Stand
and Deliver,” when there’s five of us
drumming simultaneously, and I find
that moment quite wild and stirring.
Because, by and large, there are two
distinct drum parts in our arrangements
for Adam’s songs; there’s no competing
for beats. The two parts have to reinforce
each other in order to work, though, and
whether they will or not only becomes
clear once we reach rehearsal stage
and then get the chance to fine-tune
arrangements.
Do any of the gigs you’ve done stand
out for being fun?
Many. But one of the most fun and
ludicrous has to be when I performed in a
full-length, furry porcupine costume with
huge fur spikes poking out everywhere.
I was boiling under that getup but spent
most of the set chuckling to myself.
How did you come to be Adam’s
drummer?
Pure chance. I met Adam through
a friend, Miles Landesman, who I’d
previously been in bands with, and who
happened to be Adam’s guitarist at
the time. Adam was looking for a new
drummer, and Miles suggested me. Adam
arranged for me to meet him at a studio,
and we got on very well. Luckily for me,
he also liked the way I play, and I’ve been
a part of his band since then.

Aside from Adam’s band, are there any
side projects you’d like to talk about?
I’ve been doing some songwriting,
melodic but drum-heavy songs. Once
I’m happy with them, a mate of mine, Alf
Pisanelli, a composer and mix engineer,
will work on the production. It’s a bit of
fun, but if we’re happy with the results,
it could go further. As for bands, I’m
always interested in potentially new
band projects, especially so if the music
excites me.
What tips do you have to improve drum
independence?
I don’t think there’s any easy way unless
you’re a child prodigy like Tony Williams
or Elvin Jones. You have to practice
hard or play plenty of live gigs. Listen
to as many different styles of music
as possible. If you’re trying to work
out a part from a song and it sounds
complicated, strip it down to basics,
perhaps starting from the bass drum
pattern, then once you’ve worked that
out, add the snare part, and so on. When
you’re learning to play a new rhythm
or piece, it’s crucial to play very slowly
to start with. It’s boring, but give your
brains a chance to figure out what your
hands and feet are trying to do. Then
you can pick up the speed gradually.
How long does it take to learn a new
song?
The basic arrangement of a new song
doesn’t take long to learn. It’s the finetuning
that takes a bit of time.
Who puts together your fabulously
sparkling costumes? Does that
atmosphere of secrecy wearing masks
annoy you when performing?
Some of the costumes I put together
myself. Then there are those that are
specially made for me by either Naomi
Gibbs or Caroline Wildman, both very
talented and hard-working. Naomi is
a theatrical costume designer, and
Caroline runs Cathouse Clothing, which
specializes in latex and PVC designs. I
will draw a simple sketch of an idea I
have for a costume, together with colors
and the type of fabric or material I’d
like to use. I then forward this to either
Caroline or Naomi. They then do the
difficult part and turn my sketch into
a reality. If a detail I’ve asked for isn’t
practicable, they advise on how to make
it work or suggest another option that
will produce a similar visual effect. They
have a great understanding of design
and know how to guide the basic idea
into something workable. It’s always
a thrill seeing the finished costumes. I
can’t praise these two highly enough.
[And] no, wearing masks isn’t annoying.
Once you’ve played in a porcupine
costume, wearing a mask is a stroll in
the park. But you’re right about the
secrecy, as once the mask is on, it’s as
though I’m looking out at the world
through a spyhole or peering through
some curtains.
What kit do you use?
I have a Gretsch New Classic with 10-
and 12-inch rack toms, 14- and 18-inch
floor toms and a 22-inch bass drum. My
snare is a 1970s Gretsch snare that I kept
from a previous Gretsch kit that I had to
part with due to lack of storage space.
It was a stunning 1970s walnut Gretsch
with a 24-inch bass drum. I hated
parting with that kit, so much so that
I held on to that snare as a keepsake. I
use Paiste and Sabian cymbals. All my
skins are Evans Calftone, apart from an
Evans Hydraulic that I use for the 18-
inch floor tom. They’re brilliant: a deep,
boomy sound that’s sound engineer
friendly. A revelation!
Most memorable show?
The Anthems tour we just recently
finished in the States with the excellent
Glam Skanks, followed by the Kings
tour in New Zealand and Australia, were
both cracking tours. A very enthusiastic
reception, and the reaction to both
tours was brilliant. It was our first visit to
New Zealand too, and it’s a fascinating
country. But I have to say that the
show we did at the Greek Theatre was
something else. What a setting, like a
Roman amphitheatre. The atmosphere
was electric, and the audience really
went for it. L7 played a cracking set
too. They have a powerful, grimy guitar
sound. I had a chat with Donita after the
show, very stylish and down to earth. I
hope we catch up with them again. We
also saw our old mates Prima Donna, the
fantastic L.A. band who supported Adam
in the States in 2013. Definitely one for
the memoirs.
Now that the Anthems and Kings
tours are finished, when are you next
performing with Adam?
We’re playing the final U.K. date of the
Anthems tour at the Roundhouse on
December 21, 2017. That’s sold out, so
I reckon it’ll be a wild night. Then we
kick off 2018 with a return to the States.
We’re playing an all-day festival with Boy
George and a big lineup of bands at the
Honda Center, Anaheim, on January 26.
Then we return to Florida to complete
the tour dates that were postponed this
year because of Hurricane Irma. I love
being in the U.S., so a return visit will be
a most welcome start to the New Year.
‘If You Were My Baby’
From Latest Album
‘The New Alpha’
LGBTQ pop/dance recording
artist Ricky Rebel has
unleashed his latest orgasmic
musical masterpiece “The
New Alpha” with the first
single “If You Were
My Baby” hitting the
Billboard Dance Top 40.
Shooting to fame as the lead
singer of the Michael Jackson-discovered boy band No Authority
(“Can I Get Your Number”), Rebel has toured with Britney Spears,
Destiny’s Child, 98 Degrees, Aaron Carter and Jessica Simpson, as
well as working with Madonna, signed to her Maverick record label.
Now charting again on Billboard as a solo artist, I spoke with Ricky
Rebel about his new album, his upcoming U.K. tour and recent
performances.

What was your reaction to making the
top 40 charts on Billboard?
Getting “If You Were My Baby” on the
Billboard Top 40 charts again is such an
incredible feeling. As a solo artist, I am
that much more grateful. I was in a pop
group as a kid signed to Madonna’s label,
and I am achieving [a] Billboard chart
position on my own being myself. Success
is much sweeter when you are at the
helm of it all.
Tell us about performing at The
American Influencer Awards. I saw your
performance, and you killed it!
The American Influencer Awards
was a huge event. When the owners
approached me to perform, it was just a
seed of an idea. I had no idea it would be
that big. An incredible number of news
outlets were there, and the creme de
la creme of beauty, music and fashion
showed up.
Your new album has just been released
and is creating a super buzz already.
What message do you hope to convey?
I wrote “The New Alpha” because
I noticed that political correctness
was getting out of control. I wanted
to write a record that could help
empower people and at the same
time poke fun at people who try to
manipulate by being offended [by]
everything and forcing censorship.
I got some heat for the cover of my
album, but what it represents is a
man who is equally masculine and
feminine, and politically speaking
equally left and right. We went
through an incredibly divisive
time in human history due to the
election and people’s black and
white thinking. I personally loved it,
because it made people excited about
politics. I love watching corrupt
people crumble. It’s the rebel in me.
Do you have a favorite song on the
album, one that you’re most proud
of at the moment?
My favorite song is “Magic Carpet.”
I sing like a Middle Eastern man
on it. I love the way they sing. I do
not, however, love the way radicals
throw gay men off of buildings and stone
women for disobeying. I want everyone
to know that I can sing like anyone that I
want to, however way I want to. I am an
American. I am allowed to be gay and sing
Middle Eastern-type music, and fuse it
with sex and pop. I can do that, because
I am free. If I were to live in those other
countries, the penalty for being gay is
death.
I understand you are going to tour
internationally. How excited are you,
and what can U.K. fans expect?
I am thrilled to be performing in the U.K.
I haven’t been in London since the boy
band years. I absolutely love traveling
and meeting my fans. Thanks to social
media, I speak with fans who live all
around the world. My goal is to be able
to travel to all parts of the world to share
my music and my stage show. It sounds
cliché, but my dreams are my reality.
