THE ORGANISERS of
the Starr Woman project
say they are set to
launch the next edition
of the project on December
5, 2017, in Accra.
The new edition, which is
dubbed ‘The Dream Edition’, is a
three-year advocacy drive seeking to
significantly rectify the profound
disadvantages and challenges faced
by women entrepreneurs with disability
and to promote their participation
in the economic spheres of
this country.
In a statement to the DAILY
HERITAGE, the organisers explained
that the latest edition will
promote women entrepreneurs
with disability to access equal opportunities
and rights that enable
them to realise their dreams of living
a fulfilled life, becoming successful
in business and reduce or
eliminate poverty in their lives.
“The project desires to ride on
Government’s drive to boost entrepreneurship
in the country by directing
state actors’ attention to
marginalised groupings such as
women with disabilities who might
be much interested but may not
fully benefit from these opportunities
because of their location,
gender, and physiology.
“The goal is to ensure
that the plight of such
groupings is well articulated
and known as well as considered
and addressed so
that they can access what is
due them as bona fide citizens
and under Ghana’s disability act
(Act 715),” the organisers stated.
Project focus
The organisers say the project
speaks to the government’s own commitment
and programme to accelerate
entrepreneurship, especially among
the youth, and also support women
empowerment through the implementation
of affirmative action with significant
promises to improve on the
standard of living of persons with disability.
They add that there is another
huge relevance in the government’s
continuing desire to alleviate poverty
through various schemes.
“In all of this, addressing the need
of women and
by extension that of women with disability
and also those in these districts
will be addressing economic empowerment,
gender equity, social inclu-
“By championing the cause of
women entrepreneurs with disability,
Starr Woman is addressing an overarching
need to improve inclusion of all
persons, especially women, and other
marginalized groups like the disabled
in the governance of the country,”
they said.
The dream
The organisers say the project’s
target groups are young women with
disabilities who are in self-employment
as entrepreneurs or those aspiring
to participate in it. They explain
that these are just a few that make it
into business given the high barriers
to entry such as education, training,
funding, social infrastructure, and
stigmatization. They add that even
for the few that dare to venture into
business, there is limited or no support
for them to expand or run their
businesses profitably.
The project, according to them,
will work in six districts of three regions
in the country, including the
Northern Region.
“We will identify young women
entrepreneurs with disability between
the age of 20 to 45 actively engaged in
start-ups economic ventures or in the
process of setting up their businesses
in each of the selected districts, share
in their trials and triumphs in a journey
to help them actualise their business
dreams,” they said.
The organisers say they will work
directly with over 50 direct beneficiaries
in all three regions but indirectly
engage over 1000 others as secondary
beneficiaries across the country.
They explain that the secondary
beneficiaries will engage state and
non-state actors at both local and national
levels to address systemic challenges
identified and promote
equitable distribution and inclusion of
interests of women entrepreneurs
with disabilities in various activities.
