The late Beatrice Akua 

Gyamea Nyanteh, 

affectionately called 

Mama, was born on 

Wednesday, 30th April, 

1930, at Tinkong, near 

Suhum in the Eastern 

Region of Ghana. Her 

parents were Edward Kwesi Nyanteh 

and Obeapanyin Akua Amponsah, both of 

blessed memory. She was the first born 

of two children. Her younger brother 

was the late celebrated highlife icon, 

Senior Eddie Donkor. 

She lived in Koforidua most of her 

childhood and then moved to Accra as a 

young adult working as a trader. She later 

met and married Emmanuel Kwadwo 

• Mama was always present at family events 

BIOGRAPHY

Yirenkyi Ampofo, now of blessed 

memory. They were blessed with 11 

children, made up of seven females and 

four males. 

Dada, as Mr. Yirenkyi Ampofo was 

affectionately called, was a government 

worker, who was transferred to Assin 

Fosu and so the whole family relocated 

with him. 

The family settled well at Assin Fosu 

but unfortunately Dada died in his 

fifties. Mama continued to live there 

with the rest of the family until the 

children got married and moved away. 

She later relocated to Akropong 

Akuapem in her seventies, where she 

continued with her trading activities 

well into her early eighties. 

The life of Mama, who is our mother, 

grandmother, great-grandmother and 

great-great-grandmother, was based on 

Romans 12:9-13, which says: “Let love 

be without hypocrisy, abhor what is evil. 

Cling to what is good. Be kindly 

affectionate to one another with 

brotherly love, in honour giving 

preference to one another; not lagging 

in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the 

Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in 

tribulation, continuing steadfastly in 

prayer; distributing to the needs of the 

saints to hospitality”; and Ephesians 5:1- 

2: Therefore be imitators of God as 

dear children. And walk in love, as 

Christ also has loved us and given 

Himself for us, an offering and a 

sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling 

aroma. 

• She was a perfect granny 

She went to sleep 

that night and did not 

wake up. She was 

called by her heavenly 

Father peacefully in 

her sleep. 

All members in the family can 

testify that, that was exactly what she 

did her entire lifetime. 

Mama celebrated her 87th 

birthday on April 30th this year, 

looking very strong and healthy. She 

never had any major health issues, 

just the occasional body aches that 

come with old age. The day before 

her death she was in her usual very 

happy, jovial mood, humming, singing 

and dancing with two of her 

daughters who went to visit her. 

She went to sleep that night and 

did not wake up. She was called by 

her heavenly father peacefully in her 

sleep. 

Mama left behind five children, 30 

grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren 

and four great-great-grandchildren. 

Call her ‘Suppose’, and she would 

heartily respond, “Odo nti na Yesu be 

wui”–(Christ came to die because of 

His love for mankind). 

G-ma, we know and believe you 

are with the Lord. Thank you for all 

you have done for us. We will 

continually miss your love and good 

counsel.

we

like to 

say because we feel pain, anguish, 

distress and a whole lot of undesirable 

emotions; yet we are consoled 

by the belief that Mama is sleeping, 

she is resting and she is resting 

with the Lord. 

Mama was a loving, caring and 

passionate mother who protected 

us, disciplined us, spent quality time 

with us and was always there for 

us throughout our formative ages 

and even to the present day that 

she lays before us today. 

The Good Book tells us in Isaiah 

55: 8 that, “My thoughts are not 

your thoughts, neither are your 

ways my ways, said the Lord, for as 

the heavens are higher than the 

earth, so are my ways higher than 

yours and my thoughts than your 

thoughts”. 

As we expect one result, God 

gives us another; when we want to 

go the long way, He shortens it 

sometimes for us and vice versa. 

Ultimately, God is always right and 

He does things beautifully in His 

own time. 

Mama, your home call on that 

fateful Tuesday, 15th September, 

2017, was indeed least expected 

since you were rapidly responding 

to treatment from the usual frailties 

that come with old age but little 

did we know that, your days on 

earth were fast drawing to a close. 

Even in our moment of grief, we 

take consolation in the fact that 

your Maker acknowledges your 

steadfastness and obedience to His 

teachings as you remained commit-

While we were 

growing up, you imbued 

us with impeccable 

Christian 

teachings; no wonder 

we have all grown to 

become responsible 

adults. We vividly recall 

the encouragement 

you gave us to 

strive for excellence 

in our chosen fields in 

life that has impacted 

modesty in our lives. 

We owe whatever 

we have achieved 

today to your wise 

counsel and support 

as a mother in spite of 

the painful moments 

you endured for losing 

our father and six 

of our siblings. 

God gave you to us 

as a gift for 87 years, 

we are convinced that 

you are in a better 

place now and your 

pain and sorrow are 

no more. Mama, in life 

we loved you and so 

do we even in death; 

in our hearts you hold 

a place no one can

WHEN, we, the 

grandchildren 

were asked to 

put together a 

tribute in memory 

of our cherished 

Grandmother, whose mortal 

remains lay before us now, we found it 

a herculean task to accomplish, since 

we could hardly settle on the specific 

instances and occasions when 

Grandma influenced our lives, because 

we, as grandchildren, have enjoyed an 

opportunity that many grandchildren in 

other families did not have and will 

never have in this day and age. 

Our Grandmother was one of a 

kind disposition due to her love, compassion 

and the care that she showed 

us throughout our formative ages to 

this present day. In spite of her love 

and compassion for her grandchildren, 

she always insisted on the right thing 

to be done and ensured that all of us 

would derive the best out of the training 

we received at her feet in order to 

meet the turbulent future with extreme 

hope and confidence. 

For those of us who had the opportunity 

to stay with Grandma for the 

greater part of our formative ages, we 

derived a lot of wise thoughts, wise 

counsel and the art of appreciating the 

phenomenon of creating opportunities 

out of extreme difficulties when she

school though she herself had no formal

We have indeed lost a golden 

treasure but we take consolation in 

the fact that the training and rich advice 

we received at your feet have 

strengthened us to soldier on in life to 

protect your ideals and even accomplish 

what you sought to accomplish 

but could not as we have your mortal 

remains before us this sorrowful moment. 

A woman as modest and loving as 

Grandma will always be remembered 

by those who knew and loved her, because 

we will forever miss your infectious 

smile, love and affection, but we 

take delight in our good memories 

about you. 

Grandma, we will miss you for the 

countless moments of happiness you 

have given us and we thank you for 

we know the ideal you put in us that 

we should always highlight the bright 

side of life will last us a lifetime. To us 

your grandchildren, we sincerely wish 

to praise the name of Our Lord God 

Almighty for giving us such a wonderful 

grandmother. You were an inspiration 

to us all in so many ways and 

your legacy will continue to live on. 

We will remember you as a vital 

living presence and your memory will 

bring refreshment to our hearts and 

strengthen us in times of trouble.

her. 

Mena Akua was a good 

and wonderful aunt who was 

ready to share significantly 

with anyone who came in 

contact with her. Today, we 

mourn a friend and an advisor. 

Her love for her nephews 

and nieces was remarkable. 

Mena Akua will be greatly 

missed by us and the entire 

Adikan Kwadwo family of 

Akropong. We will miss your 

jokes, laughter, advice and 

your readiness to listen to 

our sorrowful and joyful stories. 

Mena Akua, you stood tall 

and strong for us all in the 

family, but all too soon you 

are gone and words can 

barely portray the void you 

have left in our hearts. 

Though, you are away, we 

believe that you are in a perfect 

place of the Almighty and 

we will, one day, meet in His 

Glory. 

How we wish a moment
