As the inventors of the footbed, we’ve spent centuries coming up with ways to make our customers’ lives
better and richer – by crafting good shoes for every situation imaginable. In a consumer world driven
primarily by price and dominated by cheap merchandise, our BIRKENSTOCK premium products offer a
smart and attractive alternative for people who value functionality, durability and sustainability.
Our sandals are made in Germany at our own manufacturing facilities, with an extensive amount of the
work performed by hand. Every sandal undergoes 17 individual production steps before the finished
product is ready; for our shoes, that number is well over 100. The closed-toe models are made in workshops
in Portugal that adhere to a centuries-old tradition of handcraftsmanship.
Whether produced by man or machine, all BIRKENSTOCK products meet the highest quality standards in
the shoe industry worldwide. This applies just as much to our sandals and closed-toe models as it does

At the heart of all our models is the original BIRKENSTOCK footbed. Replicating a footprint in the sand, its construction has been consummately designed and
engineered down to the smallest detail. The original BIRKENSTOCK footbed has built-in shock absorption, while the gripping motion that keeps the shoe in place
provides exercise and promotes circulation. The anatomical moldings are designed to reduce pressure when you walk, helping to provide relief for your feet,
joints and back.

01 | HEEL CUP
The molding in the heel area supports your foot
tissue and holds your heel bone firmly in its
natural position.
02 | LONGITUDINAL ARCH SUPPORT
The arch support along the side of the footbed
surrounds the tarsal bone. As a result, it provides
the stability your foot needs when walking, while
supporting and strengthening the inner arch. It
stabilizes the back of the foot, thereby improving
gait and coordination.
03 | HEEL MOLD
The outer arch support promotes movement
that reduces pressure on the joints – and the
likelihood of twisting your ankle. The heel mold
activates the calf muscles, stabilizes the back of
the foot and improves gait and coordination.
04 | TRANSVERSE ARCH SUPPORT
The transverse arch support, which runs through
the middle of the footbed, stabilizes the metatarsal
bone, easing the pressure on the balls of
your feet and helping prevent splayfoot. It also
helps ensure that your foot maintains a naturally
straight and solid stance.
05 | TOE GRIP
There are raised indentations at the front of the
footbed near the toes. Thanks to this toe grip,
your toes remain relaxed in their natural position,
which supports the flexing action of walking.
06 | FOOTBED EDGE
The footbed rises noticeably at the front end. This
edge protects your toes as your foot flexes.
07 | FIRST LAYER OF JUTE
The first layer of jute forms the base of our
footbed. It helps bond the natural cork to the
latex core.
08 | CORK AND LATEX FOOTBED
The cork and latex footbed is the heart of all
BIRKENSTOCK shoes. This shock-absorbing and
highly flexible core cushions and supports the
feet while relieving pressure. Crafted of natural
materials, it insulates against both heat and cold
and keeps your feet feeling fresh.
09 | SECOND LAYER OF JUTE
The second layer of jute frames the sides of the
footbed, increasing its flexibility and durability.
This thick, absorbent layer also helps regulate
moisture.
10 | SUEDE LINING
The high-quality suede lining naturally absorbs
moisture to help keep feet fresh.
FOAM INSERT (ONLY ON THE SOFT FOOTBED)
The soft footbed is padded with an anatomically
shaped foam inlay. It contains millions of tiny air
bubbles that deliver an especially comfortable
wearing experience.

LAYER BY LAYER
PURE FUNCTIONALITY
The original BIRKENSTOCK footbed combines natural materials from sustainable
sources with outstanding functionality. The smooth suede lining is the first layer
that delivers comfort. It is wonderfully soft, absorbing moisture and wicking it
away to the thickly woven jute layer below. Another layer down is the cork and
latex core that forms the heart of the footbed. It cushions impacts and supports
your foot every step of the way. A layer of coarse jute and the sturdy EVA outsole
round off the stabilizing design, providing your foot with additional relief.
Those who prefer their shoes to be a bit softer should opt for the BIRKENSTOCK
soft footbed. Here, we insert a permanently elastic latex cushion right underneath
the suede lining. It gently cushions every step and always returns to its original
form. Like walking on air!
EACH ONE OF OUR SHOES
COMES WITH A FOOTBED
When people use the term footbeds, they’re actually talking about BIRKEN-
STOCK. While footbeds are now synonymous with extraordinary comfort, the
term itself was first used by BIRKENSTOCK in the 1930s to denote anatomically
shaped insoles that provide special support. Unlike other orthopedic
inserts at the time, which were designed to relieve and treat ailing feet, our
footbed was conceived with the aim of maintaining healthy feet.
All our models, from sandals to closed-toe shoes, come with a footbed. The
carefully thought-out construction imitates a footprint in the sand, ensuring
that your feet feel as comfortable as possible for hours on end. The anatomical
contours of the footbed reduce pressure and support the natural rolling
movement of walking.
The flexible cork and latex core forms the heart of all BIRKENSTOCK footwear
to this day. The result is unbeatable wearing comfort.
Today we use only natural materials from sustainable sources in the
original BIRKENSTOCK footbed: light natural cork, select jute, high-quality
latex and handpicked suede for the lining. In our close-toe models, it’s this
velvety-soft lining that delivers standout moisture management. The result
is increased well-being and a comfortable foot climate when our closed-toe
shoes are worn barefoot.

TWO WIDTHS FOR A PERFECT FIT
If you’ve ever bought shoes (and who hasn’t?), you’ll be familiar with the problem
that most models only come in one width. You’ll usually find yourself looking in
vain for width options. That’s not the case at BIRKENSTOCK. We know that no two
feet are the same, so our original footbed doesn’t just come in the regular width.
Instead, all models are also available in a slimmer fit for slender feet.
Just adjust the straps – and your BIRKENSTOCKs are ready for walking! Look for

DETERMINING
YOUR SHOE SIZE.
Once you’ve measured your feet in millimeters, simply use that measurement to
find your shoe size in the table.
Remember that every BIRKENSTOCK has its shoe size and millimeter measurement
printed on the footbed, so it’s easy to find a pair that fits.

soft leather or cushioned cork, we place great value on the highest quality, both when choosing our materials and crafting our products. That’s why we’re
always on the lookout for the most sustainable sources and the latest materials with the best BIRKENSTOCK properties.
NATURAL LEATHER
Natural leather has a textured surface. It reflects the beauty and goodness of
leather – a valuable natural resource – both in its unmistakable appearance and
very nature. BIRKENSTOCK purposely does not treat surfaces and other features, so
each of our leather products is unique, with the material left the way nature
intended. We use carefully selected leather with
a thickness of 2.8 to 3.2 millimeters for our uppers.
SMOOTH LEATHER
Smooth leather has a beautiful natural texture left that can range from very
fine-grain to full-grain. The surface finish can be varied, for instance to produce
aniline or nappa leather. This leather is especially durable; external influences
have little effect. If you take good care of them, you will enjoy your smooth leather
shoes and sandals for a long time.
PATENT-COATED LEATHER
The term “patent-coated leather,” often simply called “patent leather,” refers to
fashionable types of leather with finished surfaces. Thanks to the many different
types of designs, films and embossing, there are almost no limits to the coatings
that can be applied and the looks that can be created.
NAPPED LEATHER
Napped leather is an umbrella term for leather varieties without the characteristic
texture on their surfaces. These leathers are buffed (nubuck) or the surface is
removed (suede). The color and surface may change over time –
or a natural patina may alter and customize its look.
SUEDE
Suede, which is sometimes referred to as velours leather, has a rough, fibrous,
soft and therefore flexible surface. Its open pores make it highly breathable, yet at
the same time more susceptible to soiling. A simple brushing will usually remove
any dirt.
NUBUCK LEATHER
Nubuck leather has been softly buffed. This polishing process smoothes the
natural texture of the surface, making it velvety to the touch. And as is the case
with velvet, brushing the surface of nubuck leather displaces the fibers, leaving a
visible trace and changing its appearance in different lights. These fine fibers are
highly sensitive to moisture and dust. Weatherproofing products or gentle cleaning
with a brush can help protect against soiling.
BIRKO-FLOR
This material, specially developed by BIRKENSTOCK, offers an alternative to
leather. The upper layer is made of a washable, easy-care synthetic material. The
inside is lined with a moisture-regulating layer of fleece. This quality material is
very soft, comfortable and gentle on the skin, while also being highly durable. It
also has a warming effect, making Birko-Flor models a good option in cooler
temperatures. They come in a whole rainbow of colors, designs and styles.

WOOL FELT
Wool felt is one of the oldest textiles in the world: a high-quality, natural fiber
made from sheep’s wool that offers many valuable properties. Gentle on the skin,
elastic and breathable, it insulates against both heat and cold while keeping feet
feeling fresh.
FELT
Felt is a very thick material made from mixed fibers. The felts used by
BIRKENSTOCK are exceptionally comfortable, breathable and soft to the touch. But
they wouldn’t be BIRKENSTOCK if they weren’t also robust and highly durable.
