BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA
FFT has a rich history at the
apex of the ferlizer sector
in Pakistan.
Admiedly, the business situaon is not what it used
but FFT sll has a slew of opportunies at every corner.
We have plans to restore our former glory by
combining best engineering & management pracces,
commitment and diversificaon.
We are essenally striving towards a
sustainable future under the umbrella of
the group.
The people of FFT, renowned for their commitment to
safety and technical lore, are our most valuable
resource. Thus, we have the edge to ulize these
valuable resources for our beerment & the ability to
bridge the gaps, where found, by aributes of sister
companies.
A large number of projects are currently underway for
a more viable prospect of FFT site ranging from
alternave gas resources, OPEX opmizaon, business
diversificaon, warehouse inventory management by
SPHERA and energy saving iniaves. In these uneasy
mes, the will of FFT and the determinaon of its
people is our might.

Dear Readers!
Welcome to Famafert’s
first ever edion of
Naqsh, our quarterly
newsleer.
When the newsleer was
proposed, we knew that
the right to name it
belonged to the people of
FFT and thus accordingly,
we asked them for their
contribuons. The site in
turn responded with
great enthusiasm with
suggesons pouring in and the name “Naqsh” proposed by
our very own Salman Shafique-Lead HSE was ulmately
chosen from amongst seventy suggesons of site personnel
of all cadres by a panel of senior management.
Taken literally, Naqsh is synonymous with footprint and
embodies a legacy. As they say, when the shoe fits and in
our case, it definitely does. Famafert has a long and rich
history and a legacy of perseverance and prosperity which
has le its footprint in the hearts and minds of all who are
connected with it. This legacy enables us to come together
and work for a beer and brighter future.
With our newsleer, we aim to showcase and revive our
legacy, that is to say our Naqsh.
We hope you enjoy the fruit of our efforts and those of all
the contributors!

In keeping with this philosophy, Famafert’s first ever HSE Awards (Fall’16- Spring'17) were organized on 28` April 2017 at Site to
appreciate and acknowledge remarkable achievements since the launch of PSM Revival Campaign with Mr. Abad Khan (Advisor to
CEO) and Mr. Arif-ur-Rehman (CM0) as the chief guests.
Mango Tango
Independence Day was celebrated at FFT by decorang
Admin building and organizing graceful ceremony of flag
hoisng and cake cung. The main event was organized at
the cafeteria which was embellished remarkably. A Quiz
compeon was also held to memorialize the significance of
the day with giveaways presented to all winners. The flag
hoisng ceremony was also conducted with the flag,
swinging peacefully in the air, reminding all of the great gi
of freedom bestowed upon us.
To celebrate the season of the Mango- the acclaimed King
of all fruits, a mango party was arranged for all employees
at site. The event, arranged in the main ground had tables
loaded with the tempng Chaunsa. The appezing sweet
aroma of the King-fruit increased the appete and made
everybody's mouth water. And as they say, to relish the
mangoes with full savour, one has to brush aside the
eang-manners and that is exactly what we did.
In the end a Mango-eang compeon made the event
even more memorable.

Ramzan Blessings
Sports Fiesta

FG’s Iaar organized this year at Nishat Hotel in Emporium
Mall, Lahore, brought together all the sister companies in
celebraon of the month of Ramadan. FFT parcipated in
the event wholly with presence of all cadres of the company.
The event and the plaorm it provided for building and
nurturing the connecon among all sister companies was
hugely appreciated.
Corporate Social Responsibility
Women Health Camp
An All ferlizer sports weekend was organized at FFL
Saqidabad plant site. Famafert team parcipated with zeal
and spirit. Cricket, the main event, proved the most enjoyable
with nail bing performances by both teams. Ulmately, FFT
and PFL carried the day with the trophy on display
intermiently at the winning sites.
Eye Camp for all
For the welfare of our surrounding communies, Famafert has re-commenced its fortnightly Women’s health and Eye camps from
December 2016. Specialist doctors from Lahore with their support staff are present at the camps and services are provided free of
cost. Since December, a total of approximately 3000 people have benefited from these camps. Inshallah our community will connue
to benefit from this scheme in the future as well.
TCF School
The TCF FamaFert Campus is near plant site, in Nurpur Virkan. Campus envelops 16 Kanal of land inially donated by FFL,
along with the building infrastructure. There are 12 classrooms, educang more than 300 students. FamaFert management is
connuously supporng the school, providing all kinds of building and infrastructure maintenance.

In August 2017, FFT HSE in collaboraon

Famafert achieved WWF’s Green
Office Cerficaon in January 2017. The
KPI’s selected for the Cerficaon were
IMS Recerficaon
In June of 2017, the third party audit for
IMS Cerficaon was carried out by SGS
at site resulng in Recerficaon of site
on ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and
OHSAS 18001:2007.Famafert achieved
the disncon of being the FIRST
Company in Pakistan cerfied on the
revised ISO standards of 2015.
IFA Cerficaon
A second party audit for IFA Protect &
Sustain Cerficaon was conducted in
October of this year. The IFA Iniave
was introduced to ensure safety,
security and sustainability of our
product.
ERT Validaon
In September of this year, FFT’s ERT
structure was revamped followed by
comprehensive training of ERT
Members of all shi groups plus their
Incident Commanders. Two sessions of
two day trainings each were arranged
with Mr. Rashid Mehmood, HSE
paper, power and mixed waste of Admin
building. Addionally, several green
iniaves have been taken not only by
the Green Office team but site
personnel as well.
Spot awards
Recognion for a job well done is one of
the best rewards an individual can get.
At FFT, all departments decided to go
beyond a simple “good job” and a pat on
the back and spot awards distribuon
ceremonies were iniated at site by all
departments to acknowledge
self-iniaves of employees in
Improving site safety awareness and
culture. This has gone a long way in
drills, Minutes of Meengs and
Management Safety Audits as its four
modules. Till now, two of the four
modules, IIR and MSA have been
launched aer extensive training and
tesng at site with the launch of the
remaining two modules in the pipelines.
Permit to Work Revamp
To improve our PTW system a
mul-disciplinary team has been
working on a revamp of Famafert
permit to work system to align site PTW
system with that of FFL which would
bring all sister companies in sync with
each other. This will be a big step
towards operaonal excellence and go a
long way in strengthening site culture.

An up-close look at the life & experience of Arshad Mahmood

About Arshad Sb
“Beta bara ho ka engineer banaga.” has
been a common pronouncement
amongst Pakistani families for ages
andwas alsotrue in the case of Arshad Sb.
Lucky for him for it was exactly what he
wanted. Having been inspired by a
mechanical engineer paternal uncle,
Arshad Sb aspired to become a
mechanical engineer even before he’d
completed his matriculate and as such,
eventually joined UET Lahore as a
mechanical engineering student.
About his Career
Arshad Sb took his first step into the
corporate world as a Trainee Engineer at
NFC. Aer NFC, he spent two years in FFC
followed by a snt at Rupali Polyester, a
break in a way from a career spent ll
then exclusively in the ferlizer sector.
Subsequently, when the offer to work on
the challenging BMR Project of Dawood
Hercules came up in 1988, he accepted
and this later turned into an offer for a
permanent posion as Senior
Maintenance Engineer with the
company. Lile did he know at the me
that he would build a whole career here
climbing up the corporate ladder to the
very top.
The Site Experience in a sentence
When asked to sum up his 29 year
experience in one sentence, Arshad Sb
very blithely answered “Ye to dosra ghar
hai (This is my second home).” As he very

smoothly summed it up that you can’t
have a work ethic of 7 to 7 and not end
up with your workplace as your home
away from home.
Words to live by
This queson stood out because Arshad
Sb answered instantly without even the
least bit of hesitaon that his moo
throughout had been work, work and
more work because “If you put in the
work, put in the time, put in the effort,
then you’ll reap the reward”.
Advice to all Beginners out there
Do every job with the utmost
professionalism and dedicaon,
regardless of its significance. Be true to
your work and it will be recognized. And
most importantly, NEVER give up and
always just keep moving forward!
Plans For Rerement
Having never had many opportunies to
travel for pleasure, Arshad Sb now plans
to go for Umrah to accomplish his
long-held desire to fulfill his religious
obligaons.
Also, having rered from his second
home a.k.a the plant, he plans to take full
advantage of the opportunity and devote
the maximum effort to spending me
with his family.
FFT In the next five years
The site has been through a couple of
very tough years due to gas curtailment
which has led to a breakdown in site
morale but it is especially important to
remember that “Tough times don’t last
but tough people do”.
It is his firm belief that the new
management will take all possible steps
to resolve the issues and plant will
become operaonal as well as
sustainable once again. The new team
has a vast exposure and an out of the box
approach and thus will do all it takes and
Inshallah Famafert will touch the skies
as it fulfills its potenal.

1. What inspired you to become an
engineer?
Ha-ha! That eternal queson. Well, as
long as I can remember mathemacs and
problem solving have always been my
key strongholds. Engineers are esteemed
professionals in their own right. Also I
always had the passion for beerment of
my country. So combine these factors
plus an analycal aptude made me
realize that I was desned to be an
engineer.
2.Tell us a bit about your career
porolio?
The only words that come to my mind to
culminate 22 years of experience are
urge and perseverance. I started my
career as a process engineer from FFC,
also had exposure of oil refinery for a
couple of years. Then I joined Engro
where diverse oppurtunies enabled me
to develope myself both personally and
professionally. Aerwards I joined
Fama where I had a chance to work on
all ferlizer plants. But it is sll a
connuous learning process. Challenges
are there which keep me excited and
movated.
3.What have been your career
ambions?
I believe in leaving behind a legacy that is
recollected in a respectable manner.
People are reminisced by their qualies
and propensity. I want to conclude my
career in such a way that I am ruminated
as an upright person both professionally
and personally.
4.What are your hobbies?
Listening to all types of good music,
quality poetry, am also an avid reader of
human psychology and travelling. I rarely
write poetry as well.
5.What do you feel are the qualies
needed to excel in a professional
environment?
Passion and a posive atude is the key
to success in every walk of life.
Technically you can manage but always
keeping a steady head, self-improvement
and adaptability can help you achieve
wonders.
6.What you look most forward to while
working with an individual?
A posive mindset and urge to prove
yourself are some of the prized qualies I
seek in a person.
7.What do you see in Famafert?
FFT has a lot of potenal. I see a whole
bunch of opportunies here for
everyone. The challenges here are a solid
ground for anyone who has something to
show, I personally am very excited for
this site.
8.What message you would like to give
the people of Famafert?
I would say that the you people are some
of the best in class when it comes to the
task at hand. I know these people have
the will in them to go beyond. Our legacy
is the testament to this monument we
call FamaFert.
9.How does it feel to be plant manager of
a ferlizer plant?
I am extremely charged and movated
and eagerly working to prove my
effecveness and to payback trust of the
Organizaon in terms of projects
currently me and my team are working
on.
10.Tell us a bit about your personal life?
I am typically a family oriented person. I
love to spend me with my kids and
family. I am very accessible and friendly
to everyone. Personally I feel that I am a
devoted individual to my profession and
family and have managed to keep
discipline in this regard.

PLANT ACTIVITIES

Cost Opmizaon
We know that at FFT every cubic foot of
gas counts, so to aid in plant economics
FFT team has taken the iniave to
opmize electricity consumpon at site.
FFT uses 2 natural gas rental generators
for electricity generaon when not
operaonal. The opmizaon exercise has
reduced power consumpon by 0.3 MW
and has saved 10 MPKR per annum in
fiscal savings. This shows that even in
tough mes, FFT strives to aim for the sky.
Our primary reforme had been performing
exceponally well in the past. In recent
shutdown opportunity was realized to
further enhance its producvity by
cleaning its process coils with dry CO2
blasng. The cleaning has resulted in
immaculate tube condion without any
damage. Its enliven benefits will be
realized when plant becomes operaonal
InshAllah.
PMS
The process of aligning our HR policies
with respect to a performance based
orientaon began in 2016. So the
performance management system was
revamped. FG HR policies & systems were
implemented and in 2016 we followed the
same PMS but it was not managed
digitally. However it was agreed that in
future oracle Performance Management
System will be executed. At start of the
year, employee’s basic informaon was
incorporated in the system along-with
complete hierarchy. Subsequent to the
successful test run and training session in
mid-July, PMS was launched with same
melines as applicable to the other
business.
In-house Fabricaon
As with process plants, we all know that
mechanical parts are the key to plant
integrity, safety and smooth operaon.
Mechanical parts manufactured by OEM’s
cost a premium both in terms of monetary
value and me.
FFT site team has understood this noon
with firm lucidity in mind and has iniated
local fabricaon of mechanical parts by
training site personnel thus revitalizing
the learning spirit and abeng to lessen
expenditure.
Reformer Efficiency
Ammonia plant is the heart of a urea
ferlizer manufacturing facility and rightly
so it needs to be on the cung edge when
it comes to energy efficiency and
operaonal excellence. The core of the
ammonia plant is the primary reformer.
Launch of Sphera
Warehouse at any facility is vital for its
connual operaon. Maintaining spares
and material in prisne condion and
opmum quanes is not an easy job. Too
much or too less can both be detrimental.
A project was iniated to help alleviate
this maer by standardizing inventory for
all 3 sister plants which will opmize
necessary material quanes required
and cost incurred. Thus “Sphera” was
envisaged. Currently this project is in the
development phase and will bear fruit in
days to come.
Harvest Yield
In 2017, rice crop was planted over 80
acres of agricultural land of the company
with its harvesng acvies achieving
compleon in November. The crop yield
was almost 120,000 kgs resulng in a net
value of Rs. 3.7 million for the company.
Industry Relaons
Relaons between Famafert
management and union have always been
exemplary throughout the history of the
Company. No worker’s strike, lockout or
go-slow atude ever occured during this
period. A total of 23 selements have
been negoated between CBA and the
Management in a peaceful and amicable
manner. The 23rd Selement was finalized
with the CBA in September-2017 whereby
emoluments of the non-management
staff were significantly increased.

INTO THE HIDDEN PEARL OF KUMRAT VALLEY

Kumrat is one of Pakistan's most beauful valleys in
Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with lush
green pastures along the gushing black and green
water of Panjkora river, snow clad mountains and
dense forests. This valley ll recently was under the
control of Taliban. As part of a travel group, "The
Adventurers", I travelled to kumrat to discover its
hidden beauty. With "Jandrai", a small town-as a
pit-stop towards "Jahaz Banda" which is nestled
among magnificent Hindukush range surrounded by
majesc beauty at 3100 meters altude and
enroute the magnificent "Katora Lake" surrounded
by majesc mountains, we reached Kumrat through
Thal. Kumrat was a sight to behold.
Our country is brimming with beauty.
The landscapes and the scenery- it certainly is
a master artisan’s creation brought to life.
The Travel Experience; A Solo backpack tour to Turkey and USA with one week in Turkey
(Istanbul & Cappadocia) and 2 weeks in USA (Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Chicago
and New York). It was an out-of-the-world experience.
Food: Well in Turkey the food is amazing without any worries about finding the Halal meat.
I loved the Iskander Kebap which I had in Sultanahmet, Istanbul. And Turkish tea in their
signature cups is amazing. While in USA there is a connuous struggle to find Halal food
(except in New York where you can find street vendors serving Halal Gyros and Falalfel
everywhere).
Travel Tips!: Use Google! It is the best travel agent one can have. Do book your air ckets
at least 6 weeks in advance, explore mulple websites (like kayak and momondo) to
compare rates and find cheapest flight opons, book economical rooms through
booking.com and always run these searches on incognito mode of your web browser as
these sites use your search cookies to offer higher rates against the repeated searches. Use
Google Travel App to download all sort of tourism informaon of any city for offline use.

One common aribute of highly successful
people is that they possess posivity in their
nature. They think posive, focus on

energy that helps others around them. As
part of life, the mes go bad and good. It’s

instead of being in the circle of concern. The
circle of influence is the area comprising of
the issues in which one can have an
influence directly while circle of concern is
the one that deals with the issues which are
of concern but one does not have control
over these. The example of the circle of
concern is non availability of gas for plant
operaon; which is a major concern but on
it there is lack of control. While for the
issues of circle of influence includes
employee’s development, review of system
procedures etc that can be directly
influenced by each individual.

Tips for your Health

If you have been diagnosed with high
blood pressure, you can lower your blood
pressure and reduce risk of heart diseases
by making the following lifestyle changes.
1-Loose Excess Fat and Watch your
Waistline: Losing just 10 pounds can help
reduce blood pressure. You should also
keep an eye on your waistline. Men are at
risk if their waist measurement is greater
than 40 inches and women if greater than
30 inches.
2 -Exercise: Regular physical acvity, at
least for 30 minutes most days of the
week, can lower your blood pressure. The
best types of exercise include walking,
jogging, cycling, and swimming.
3- Reduce Salt Intake:Even a small
reducon in the Sodium in your diet can
lower your blood pressure. Limit sodium
to 2300 mg a day or less.
4- Stop Smoking: Each cigaree you
smoke increases your blood pressure for
many minutes aer you finish. People
who quit smoking regardless of age, have
substanal increases in life expectancy.
5- Eat Healthy: Eang fruits, vegetables,
low fat dairy products and a diet rich in
whole grains helps in controlling high
blood pressure. Take Potassium because it
lessens the effects of Sodium on blood
pressure.

#SHEMATTERS
In keeping with Fama Group’s #SheMaers Iniave, We talked to Aqsa Aslam, FFT’s only female
Process Engineer with 09 years of experience under her belt to find out her story.
1. Did you always want to be an engineer
and why?
As a child growing up in a family with four
sisters working as doctors, one is expected
to follow the same path. Being good in
academics just adds to the expectaon. This
was true in my case but I had other plans.
Having spent a major poron of my
childhood at Guddu Thermal Power Plant
witnessing my father, an electrical engineer
work on really cool-sounding projects, I
aspired to be an electrical engineer working
(and succeeding) to solve the country’s load
shedding issues (*laughs*) but ming and
domicile complicaons led to me opng for
Chemical Engineering at UET lhr.Now to be
very honest, I am not and never was the
biggest fan of Chemistry but back then, I had
a vague idea about it being similar somehow
to Electrical and I’d also heard it was very
lucrave so I joined up, excelled through the
subsequent four years and here I am.
P.S : To whom it may concern : If you’re
reading this, Then I love and enjoy working
with Chemistry(*coughs*). All those years of
comming hundreds of Organic Chem’s
reacons to memory really changed my
mind.
2. How would you describe your experience
here?
As a process and now project engineer, the
experience has been a double edged sword.
It’s rewarding and demanding at the same
me but you know what they say “Nothing

I think it’s great that Fama Group is acvely
recognizing the contribuon of its female
employees and working to create a more
inclusive workplace environment. It’s a great
plaorm for us because there are very few
female engineers at sites albeit probably
more than there used to be. So a program
recognizing, encouraging and overall
inspiring women through the success stories
of other women, well it’s just what we need.

Definitely Master Shafi sahib, our senior
foreman of Machinery. The skills and
knowledge I have today, more than fiy
percent is what I learned from him. I spent
about fieen (15) years under his guidance.
And he made me who I am today.
Hypothecally if you were a machine in
plant what would you be:
I would be P402, Boiler Feed Pump; it serves
the boiler with no complaints. It is most
calm and stable in its own way. Never gives
excuses nor lets his pride get low.
Memorable moment of your career at FFT:
It was 2001, when I won the lucky draw for
Hajj. It was the most amazing day of my life.
The Hajj draw was sponsored by the
company, through which each year, 8
worker and 8 management employees were
financed to complete journey of Hajj
Your role in the FFT family:
I am very social person and take part in all
kinds of social gatherings and acvies. I
have planned and organized a great number
of weddings in this company, though I am
