The holidays represent a season of giving, including donations to charities. Some 40 percent 

of all individual charitable donations are made in December. For many charities, endof-year 

fundraising is the difference between a successful year and financial hard times. 

The American charitable sector is the largest in the world, with Americans contributing 

more than $300 billion per year in money plus $260 billion in volunteer time. With 1.1 

million charities to choose from, it’s not easy to decide where all that money should go. 

Giving Back was designed with these things in mind. As a way to assist local non-profits 

in maximizing year end gifts, and to spotlight a variety of charities in one publication, this 

section provides readers the opportunity to learn more about local organizations and encourages 

donations during this critical fundraising window. 

The Giving Back section was a natural fit for FLORIDA TODAY. We believe it is a core

Each of us is unique. We all have led distinctive 

lives and experienced different circumstances. 

Why then should any of us think that our 

charitable giving would be the same? Giving to

The good news is charitable choices abound 

in Brevard County. As you page through this 

giving guide, you’ll find groups large and small 

who are performing critical functions to make 

our area a wonderful and vibrant place 

to do business, raise families, and live 

more fully. They are doing everything 

you can think of: ensuring children go to 

school fed and ready to learn; helping 

families cope with crisis, stabilize and 

thrive; caring for animals; conserving our 

environment; enhancing educational 

and cultural opportunities, and much 

more. 

The work these organizations do is vitally 

important in building and sustaining 

a healthy and vibrant community, 

and they all need – and are grateful 

for – your support. We encourage 

you to discuss your plans with your 

professional advisors and contribute to 

these nonprofits generously now, name 

them in your will, or both. 

So, how do you decide? How can you realize 

the greatest impact with your giving? How do 

you make that unique choice of how to share? 

Brevard resident Phoebe Leeman asked 

herself these questions several years ago. 

Born in 1921 with a cleft lip and palate, Phoebe’s 

life was saved by an elderly relative who fed 

her using a milk-soaked cloth, and through the 

quick action of her parents, who whisked her 

away to Johns Hopkins Hospital. It was there 

where she received the initial surgery that kept 

her alive. While she continued to grow and 

thrive, Phoebe’s early years were punctuated 

by multiple surgeries and therapies to address 

her medical and dental needs. As a teen, she 

was excited to start wearing lipstick which 

helped her feel like she finally blended in. 

Phoebe went on to live a fascinating and full 

life, serving in the Women’s Army Auxiliary 

Corps during World War II and moving around 

the southeast U.S. with her husband of 53 

Shuler and 

Dr. Ramon Ruiz 

from the Arnold 

Palmer Hospital 

for Children,

Foundation for 

Brevard 

years. Always eager to get back to Florida, 

they got their wish in 1966 and settled happily 

in Brevard. Finally close to family, Phoebe 

loved the area and enjoyed the beach, her 

neighbors, and her beautiful community. But 

as the years went by, she yearned to do more 

to make a life-affirming difference in people’s 

lives. 

Reflecting back on her experiences and 

exploring her options with Kevin Smith, her 

financial advisor, she realized she could 

help others who were born with the same 

medical challenges, using assets she no 

longer needed. Working together with the 

Community Foundation and her advisors, 

Phoebe established the Mr. and Mrs. Hendrik 

Leeman Family Fund which – now and forever 

– will support the surgical care and critical 

services for children born with cleft lip and 

palate, helping them to live rewarding and 

long lives of their own. 

There are many more stories from the 

Community Foundation we could share,

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW 

Founded in 1952, the Brevard Humane Society 

is the community’s oldest established animal 

welfare group. Deeply rooted in Brevard, we are 

a local leader in the “no kill” movement and are 

dedicated to “speaking for those who cannot 

speak for themselves.” Self-sustaining, we care 

for over 1,800 animals a year without support 

from tax dollars. Our funding comes through 

donations, services (pet adoptions, products & 

cremations), fund raisers and Molly Mutt Thrift 

Shop sales.

Saying "Goodbye" to a Beloved Pet: We 

understand the loving relationship you have 

with your pet. and what it means to face 

losing a true member of the family. When your 

pet's quality of life declines due to old age or 

illness, you may have to face the decision as to 

whether or not to let them go. 

You can choose to be there when it is time to 

say goodbye at our Heavenly Paws Chapel. It 

is a serene and calm place where you can say 

your final farewells to your beloved pet. Once 

your pet has passed. you may choose to have 

them cremated (individual or communal). 

Molly Mutt Thrift Shops: Come explore 

hidden treasures at any of our (5) Molly Mutt 

Thrift Shops. From clothing, household items, 

jewelry, furniture and collectibles, each shop 

is loaded with great deals for every bargain 

hound! 

Volunteering: Volunteers are essential to 

everything we do. They are our "Society 

Ambassadors" in the community. Activities 

may include walking dogs, socializing cats, 

grooming animals, shelter beautification 

projects and assisting at our thrift shops and 

special events.

The Cancer Care Centers Foundation is a 

local 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to 

providing free comprehensive patient/family 

support services, community outreach 

and education and financial assistance to 

qualified patients. 

Our programs address the following 

areas: 

Emotional Support – We understand 

those experiencing a cancer diagnosis 

benefit from the support and experiences 

of others. The Foundation in conjunction 

with the Cancer Care Centers of Brevard 

offer general cancer support groups the 

first three Fridays of the month. Groups are 

open to all who are living with, through and 

beyond a cancer diagnosis. 

Assistance Efforts – –We provide the 

patient and family coordinated information 

by connecting them with other non-profit, 

government and medical agencies to help 

enlighten their cancer journey. 

Financial Stress – We offer valuable 

financial assistance by paying basic living 

expense for qualified patients in active 

treatment so they can focus on getting

SCIENCE THAT IS SAVING LIVES 

• Numerous breakthrough cancer drugs, 

including Herceptin, Erbitux, Rituxan and Avastin, 

are based on technology pioneered by City of 

Hope and are saving lives worldwide. 

• Millions of people with diabetes benefit from 

synthetic human insulin, developed through 

research conducted at City of Hope. 

• A pioneer in bone marrow and stem cell 

transplants, City of Hope has performed more 

than 13,000 transplants and operates the largest 

program of its kind in the world with survival rates 

that are unparalleled. 

• City of Hope is a national leader in islet cell 

transplantation, which has the potential to 

reverse type 1 diabetes. In addition, we provide 

islet cells for research at institutions throughout 

the U.S. 

• Our scientists pioneered the application of 

blood stem cell transplants to treat patients 

with HIV and AIDS-related lymphoma, achieving 

the first long-term persistence of anti-HIV 

genes in patients with AIDS-related lymphoma. 

This treatment ultimately may cure not only 

lymphoma, but also HIV/AIDS. 

• City of Hope is among a select few centers 

in the nation performing CAR-T cell therapy, a 

form of immunotherapy, which uses a patient’s 

own T cells and modifies them to recognize and 

kill cancer. City of Hope was the first to conduct 

human T cell therapy trials for patients with 

lymphoma, AML, glioma and neuroblastoma.

Founded in 1977, Hospice of St. Francis is Brevard 

County’s longest serving, and only independent 

non-profit hospice care resource. We serve the entire 

expanse of Brevard County, and we are honored to fulfill

approach to caring for the bodies, minds and spirits of

In addition to our expert medical, social and spiritual 

support services, we offer a variety of programs in 

support of our patients and our community. 

Pet Pledge 

Our Pet Pledge program provides peace of mind for our 

patients by arranging placement for their beloved pets. 

The program, in cooperation with the Friends for Animals 

Sanctuary, is administered by volunteers who find loving 

homes for displaced pets. 

We Honor Veterans 

Hospice of St. Francis is part of the We Honor Veterans 

initiative to recognize veterans for answering the call 

to duty. We are the only Level Three Partner of the 

We Honor Veterans program in Brevard County. This 

designation requires a deep commitment to community 

collaboration relating to veteran’s issues. We have a 

team of volunteers with military service that participate in 

our initiatives and offer veteran-to veteran services. We 

honor our veterans through personalized veteran pinning 

ceremonies, a special time for each one of our veterans 

and their loved ones. 

Bereavement Programs 

Our grief support groups and workshops are 

offered in locations throughout the county, including 

Titusville, Merritt Island, Melbourne and Palm 

Bay. Additionally, our North Star program offers 

bereavement support that is specially designed 

for grieving children. Our grief support groups and 

workshops are open to anyone in the community 

that needs support after a loss. 

Caregiver Support Classes 

We understand the unique needs and concerns of 

friends and family members that serve as caregivers 

to their loved ones. We offer caregiver support classes 

throughout the county, as well as additional support 

options through our hospice program. 

St. Francis Pathways 

Pathways is a specialized program that offers comfort 

care to non-hospice patients that are living with complex 

chronic or disabling conditions. Pathways provides 

palliative care services, which focus on alleviating 

symptoms, coordinating care, and helping the patient 

achieve their best quality of life. 


Purple Iris Signature Luncheon 

This April event is open to the public. It showcases and 

raises funds to support Hospice of St. Francis programs. 

Featuring a noted speaker on a related topic, the Purple 

Iris brings together people throughout Brevard County 

who are interested in or facing issues of caregiving, 

chronic illness, end-of-life, or grieving by both children 

and adults. Special emphasis is given to working 

together in supportive, uplifting ways.

Hospice of St. Francis Foundation 

The Foundation is a philanthropic community outreach 

program for Hospice of St. Francis. We build 

relationships with individuals and businesses that have 

been touched by our program, are inspired by our 

mission and want to get involved to help expand our 

care for patients and families throughout Brevard County. 

These partnerships provide philanthropic support for our 

wide array of services - from chronic illness, to hospice 

care, to grief support for children and adults, to specialty 

programs for pets and veterans. Donors may provide 

monetary gifts, support special events, or leave a legacy 

in their wills and estates. Each dollar given is used to

The FLORIDA TODAY Reaching Out 

Holiday Fund, a 501(c)(3) charitable 

organization, was established in 1992 

to allow solicitation of donations from 

individuals and corporations in order to 

purchase new toys and books for Brevard 

County’s underserved children during the 

holiday season. 

With money donated to the fund by 

individuals, groups and corporations, 

FLORIDA TODAY purchases and distributes 

PROGRAM DETAILS 

Parents register their children for the gifts 

at United States Post Office and Sharing 

Center locations throughout the county 

beginning in November each year. Toys 

and books are chosen according to the 

child’s age and gender. Sorted according 

to location, gifts are distributed at four 

distributions sites - Titusville, Cocoa, 

Melbourne and Palm Bay. 

All money donated to the Holiday Fund 

is used exclusively to purchase toys, 

books and gifts. FLORIDA TODAY forms 

partnerships with Brevard businesses 

interested in participating in this worthwhile 

cause and secures arrangements with 

new toys and books to thousands of 

Brevard County children, age newborn to 

15 years old. Those toys and books are 

distributed countywide to the parents or 

guardians who might not be able to provide 

gifts to their children during the holiday 

season. 

In addition. Reaching Out funds enable 

Aging Matters to provide small holiday gifts 

to more than 1,000 local seniors living alone 

to help in their daily lives or offer comfort.

Volunteers purchase, wrap and deliver gifts 

to the seniors.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a 

member of Feeding America – the largest charitable 

domestic hunger-relief organization in the United 

States. Second Harvest secures and distributes 

food and grocery products to approximately 

550 local nonprofit feeding programs throughout 

Central Florida. Brevard country branch serves 

approximately 78 of those partner agencies. 

In Central Florida 1 in 6 people are food insecure, 

not knowing where their next meal is coming from. 

Approximately 498,000 individuals turn to Second 

Harvest’s Food pantries and meal services programs 

to feed themselves and their family each year. 

Last year, with the help of food and financial donors, 

volunteers and a caring, committed community, the 

food bank distributed 54 million meals to partner 

programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, 

women’s shelters, senior centers, day care centers 

and Kids Cafes. 

A more recent strategy for distributing food directly 

to the community is the mobile food drop. At a 

designated site, Second Harvest will deliver up 

to a semi-truck of food full of produce and other 

nutritious items to be distributed in a day. In fiscal 

year 2016/2017, Second Harvest distributed 3.5 

million meals through about 4 drops per week in 

Brevard, Lake, Seminole, Osceola, Orange, Volusia 

and Marion Counties. 

Our Hi-Five Kids Pack Program provides nutritious 

meals to needy children who do not have access 

to school cafeterias during the weekend. Second 

Harvest Food Bank partners with elementary 

schools that have a significant percentage of student 

participation in free and reduced lunch programs. 

Last year, 26,670 weekend food packs were 

provided to needy children at elementary schools. 

The food packs contain a variety of kid-friendly items 

such as cereal, shelf-stable milk and juice, fruit cups 

and more. These food packs of shelf stable food 

are all assembled at our facility by our dedicated 

volunteers. 

One of our educational programs is the 14-week 

Culinary Training Program that teaches foodservicebased 

technical, life and employability skills to 

economically hard-pressed adults. Students enrolled 

in the program gain valuable “hands-on” experience 

learning in our production kitchen assisting in 

contract meal prep and catered events during their 

lab time with our team of award-winning chefs. 

The Benefit Connections program helps connect 

people who are eligible to receive SNAP food 

assistance benefits with the resources they need to 

access the program and get help.

United Way has always been about improving 

lives and strengthening communities. For 60 

years United Way has been working hard in our 

community to ensure we have a safety net of 

services available when people need help. We 

connect people facing crisis to the resources they 

need to survive. But that isn’t enough. That’s why, 

United Way fights for the health, education and 

financial stability of EVERY person in Brevard. By 

focusing on these three areas, we can build the 

skillsets necessary to move from merely surviving 

to thriving. 

Even with a focus on health, education and 

financial stability, our United Way still remains 

committed to supporting the safety net services 

provided by 61 programs at 44 local partner 

agencies. We realize that without addressing 

our community’s most basic needs and enabling 

individuals and families to find some sense of 

stability, it will be even more challenging to build 

the foundation needed to effect positive and longlasting 

change. 

Education - A quality education is key to building 

a good life and better employment opportunities, 

leading to a stronger community. However, many 

local kids struggle to read by 3rd grade. That’s 

why United Way fights to increase access to 

books and reduce summer learning loss.

Many families are clearly struggling to meet 

their most basic needs. That’s why this 

year’s United Way campaign is so important. 

We are committed to helping people who 

need us right here in our community. It takes 

everyone in our community working together 

to create a brighter future.

• Summer READING Loss PREVENTION - United 

Way leads an initiative with Brevard Public 

Schools to promote the importance of reading 

over the summer. Parents receive multiple 

reminders about the devastating effects of 

summer learning loss. Program participation 

continues to grow with 4,168 students achieving 

summer reading goals. 

• Little Free Libraries - Many kids do not have 

access to local libraries or worse, don’t have 

any books at home. Little Free Libraries give 

kids greater access to books through free, easily 

accessible drop-off and pick-up points. 

Income - United Way volunteers prepared 2,708 

tax returns for low-to-moderate income workers, 

saving preparation costs, and assisted with 

eligible tax credit claims resulting in a communitywide 

impact of $2.7M. Financial Education (FDIC 

‘Money Smart’ course) taught 1,682 people how 

to budget, save money, and use credit wisely. 

Health - United Way navigators assisted 

consumers, small businesses, and their 

employees as they looked for health coverage 

with the online Health Insurance Marketplace. And 

United Way’s Feed and Read program provided 

more than 4,800 children over 15,000 take-home 

meals and 20,000 books over the summer.
