Side Trips
The first holiday greeting card arrived in
our mailbox on December 1. I’m talking
REAL greeting card, here, not a cyber style
mass greeting.
Now I don’t complain
when we receive
email or text message
greetings, but they
aren’t the same as the
honest-to-goodness
Christmas cards delivered
by the US Postal
Service.
Through the years
I’ve kept photo cards
and personalized holiday
letters — not all
of them, certainly, but
ones from old friends

and family we seldom see. Each December
as I pull out the bin of wrapping paper and
ribbons, I am greeted with the photos and
cards, and off I go down memory lane.
With nearly three decades of collected
items, some of the youngsters pictured
in the earliest years are now married and
working on families of their own. Others
have since left this earth and are celebrating
Christmas with the King.
I have a few relatives that still take the
time to personally handwrite a note or
include a letter in each card they send out.
What a treat that is! And their penmanship
is actually lovely and legible. A lost art these
days.
The Christmas cards our family sends this
year will (hopefully) include a brief update
on our lives, but I can guarantee they won’t
be hand-written or even hand-addressed. If
I were to tackle such a project I would have
had to begin at the beginning of October
and likely the last folks wouldn’t receive
their cards until Valentine’s Day.
My current approach isn’t quite as personal,
but my cards will hopefully arrive on
time. (Fingers crossed.)

Dickinson County Nature Center hosts tots class Dec. 13
It’s dino time.
The Dickinson County Nature
Center is going to the dinosaurs
for its next Nature Tots program on
Wednesday, Dec. 13. The Nature Tots
programming is aimed at ages 2-5 and
is held the second Wednesday of each
month at both 10:30 a.m. and 1:30
p.m.
Each session is limited to 25 toddlers,
and spaces fill up quickly, so
please call the Dickinson County
Nature Center to register prior to the
program date. According to Bryanna
Kuhlman at the time of the interview,
the 10:30 a.m. session was already full
but there was still room in the 1:30
p.m. session.
Every Nature Tots program features
a unique theme and the theme for
December is “Discover Dinos.”
The theme seems perfect for toddlers.
“We decided to do a Discover Dinos
theme, because all kids are naturally
curious about dinosaurs,” said Kuhlman,
the environmental education
coordinator at the Dickinson County
Nature Center.
The program will feature both some
indoor and outdoor fun.
“If the weather cooperates, kids
will be following dinosaur ‘tracks’ to
a dino ‘nest’ to collect a dinosaur egg
(bath bomb). We will set up two sets
of tracks around the property that
have signs of dino life,” Kuhlman
said. “Once they find their dino egg,
we will come back to the nature center
to hatch our eggs.”
The kids will also have a story
time where they’ll listen to the book
“Dinosaurs Dinosaurs.” They’ll also
see just how large dinosaurs were by
seeing a life-sized footprint from a
dinosaur.
After going outside to track the dinosaurs
and find their dinosaur eggs,
they’ll return to the nature center to
“hatch” and identify the dinosaur that
hatches from their egg.
“I am looking forward to the dino
egg/nest hunt,” Kuhlman said. “I feel
like our students will have a lot of fun
following our dino ‘tracks’ and finding
dino ‘eggs.’”
Dinosaurs might not be a part of
today’s nature scene, but learning
about the creatures that used to roam
the planet is important, according to
Kuhlman.
“I hope that our young students will
gain an appreciation for these prehistoric
creatures through our nest hunt,”
Kuhlman said. “Students will also be
able to identify their dino and learn
about the different types of dinos that
once roamed our planet.” F

These are iconic and beloved
characters. They often leap off
the pages of Charles Dickens’s “A
Christmas Carol” onto the big screen
and onto the stage this time of year.
On Friday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.,
Spencer Community Theatre will be
playing host to a very unique offering
of this classic Christmas tale.
A one-man show.
This one hour, one-man version of
“A Christmas Carol” was adapted and
will be performed by Harold Hynick.
He will portray more than 20 characters
including Scrooge, Marley’s
Ghost, Fezziwig, Mrs. Cratchit and
Tiny Tim.
“Harold Hynick is originally from
Iowa and is a theatre professor at
Missouri Valley College. He has developed
his own production of ‘A
Christmas Carol’ where he plays all
the major character by himself. It’s
really spectacular,” said Rusty Ruth,
the executive artistic director at the
Spencer Community Theatre.
The way that Hynick portrays all
these various characters is a sight to
see, according to Ruth.
“He changes his physicality, his
voice, his characteristics. It’s fascinating
to watch him and it’s another
great way to usher in the holiday season,”
Ruth said.
In addition to his performance on
Friday night, Dec. 15, Hynick will be
hosting a free improv class for ages
middle school and up from 10 a.m.-3
p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16.
“You have to be a master of improv
to do a show like this and we are lucky
enough to have received a Renaissance
grant from the city of Spencer to help
bring Hynick in for this performance
and this master class,” Ruth said. “If
anyone is interested in the class, space
is limited. It’s free of charge but call
the theatre to reserve
a spot if you are interested.”

Christmas Carol” as
a way to fundraise to
help send his students
to the Kennedy Center
American College Theater
Festival regional
meeting, according to
Ruth.

Dickens, Christmas,
theatre, or all three
Ruth says that this show
is one to put at the top
of your to-do list.
“I’m excited for audiences
just to be able
to see this same story
in a new way. He’s not
reinventing it. By doing it all by himself
he’s breathing a breath of fresh air
for people who love that show,” Ruth
said. “It’s such a great story. It’s about
redemption and understanding what
the holidays are really all about. It’s a
perfect vehicle for people to get more
into the spirit of the season.” F

or $18 for a dessert-only
matinee.
“This is a very fun show,” said
John J. Boe, artistic director for Olde
Towne Dinner Theatre. “I’ve been
wanting to do this one here for a long
time. I did it for Readers Theatre in
high school and also in college. It’s a
fun, funny and mostly light-hearted
comedy.”
The play is part of trilogy written
by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed
Howard.
“A Tuna Christmas” is the second
play in the trilogy. The first one,
“Greater Tuna,” has been performed
at Olde Towne in the past.
Both were performed at the White
House by Williams and Sears for
President George H.W. Bush and Barbara
Bush.
“The guys who wrote it are from
Texas and it’s partly based on their
experiences,” Boe said. “The unique
part is that two people play all the
characters in the cast.”
That’s more than 20 characters for
two people. Which means lots of
quick costume changes and lots of
fun, for both the actors and the audience.
“It’s a really character driven show
with these strange and funny characters
that almost all have their own
redeeming values,” Boe said.
The common thread through it
all is the yard display competition,
which has also subject to vandalism
at the hands of a “Christmas phantom”
for years.
Branching out from those connecting
plotlines are the stories of the
numerous characters themselves.
One is trying to end his probation
and leave town for good, while
another is trying to keep a family
together for Christmas.
There are radio disc jockeys, business
owners and entrepreneurs, waitresses
and even a community theatre
director, all with their own unique,
and often humorous, stories to tell.
“Family is a big part of one of the
storylines and there is a lot of laughter,”
Boe said. “It will be a good time
and an amazing night with the food
and the show. With so much going
on, it’s nice during the holidays to be
able to just kick back and laugh.” F

Audiences across the country

Fans of big band music have a date
to circle on their calendar. Fans of
Christmas music should circle the
same date.
The George Maurer Big Band
Holiday Show is coming to the Clay
County Fair & Events Center.
The concert take place Thursday,
Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and tickets range
from $17-22.
“One goal we have every year is to
do a Christmas show,” said Jeremy
Parsons, CEO of the Clay County Fair
& Events Center.
“We’ve had Manheim Steamroller
and The Beach Boys and this year we’ll
have a 16-piece big band with vocalists
and everything you experience
with that.”
The ensemble is led by pianist and
composer George Maurer, who performs
and collaborates with a variety
of ensembles, such as his jazz group,
trio and The 2nd New Originals.
He’s performed for Congress and
worked with Eric Clapton.
Mauer has performed all over the
country, and he's also no stranger to
Spencer.
“George Maurer has performed on
the free stages at the fair a few different
times,” Parsons said.
“This performance will be a twohour
fully Christmas show. It’s big
band versions of Christmas hits and
maybe some original pieces.”
The band performs a range of musical
styles from traditional jazz to
swing, blues to bebop, involving a
number of Christmas favorites such
as “Oh Tannenbaum” and “Baby, It’s
Cold Outside.”
“If you’re looking for two hours of
really good Christmas music that’s
what this is about,” Parsons said.
“With an affordable ticket price, if
you’re looking to get out for a good
Christmas-filled night, this is the
night.”
