Nuts, oily fish good for kids to
avoid risk of asthma, rhinitis
Agencies
LONDON: Including nuts,
oily fish like salmon, flax
seeds, and soybean oil -- rich
in essential polyunsaturated
fatty acids -- in your children's
diet may prevent their
risk of developing allergic
diseases, especially asthma
and rhinitis by teenage, a
study has suggested.
Both asthma and rhinitis
affects the kids since their
childhood, either due to hereditary
or environmental
factors.
The results show that
the presence of an increased
amount of polyunsaturated
fatty acids such as Omega-3
and an omega-6 fatty acid
called arachidonic acid in
the blood is associated with
a reduced risk of allergic diseases
among children.
Children who had higher
blood levels of omega 3 at the
age of 8 years were less likely
to have developed asthma or
rhinitis by the age of 16 years.
High levels of an omega-6
fatty acid called arachidonic
acid were associated with a
reduced risk of asthma and
rhinitis at 16.
"Since allergies often debut
during childhood it is of
particular interest to study if
children's environment and
lifestyle affect the development
of these diseases," said
Anna Bergström, researcher
at the Karolinska Institutet
in Sweden.
For the study, published
in the Journal of Allergy
and Clinical Immunology,
the team conducted a survey
over the blood samples of 940
children.
Among children with
asthma or rhinitis at the age
of 8 years, higher blood levels
of arachidonic acid were associated
with a higher probability
of being symptom-free
at age 16 years, the researchers
said.
Previous studies have
also suggested that Omega-3
fatty acids helps in preventing
Alzheimer's and reduces
the worsening of liver damages.
Restless sleep
increases risk of
Parkinson's in men
Agencies
LONDON: Do you lack a restful sleep and are in the
habit of hitting or kicking in your sleep? Beware, according
to a study, this could be a sign of a disorder
associated with Parkinson's disease, especially in
men. The rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder
or RBD, which most often affects persons aged 50-
70, and more frequently in men than women, is characterised
by disturbances in the part of sleep where
dreams take place.
While healthy people are relaxed and lie still
during dream sleep, people suffering from RBD live
out their dreams and during sleep they hit, kick and
shout. The study, published in the journal The Lancet
Neurology, showed that men with RBD lack dopamine
-- a chemical in the brain that affects emotions,
movements and sensations of pleasure and pain -- and
have a form of inflammation of the brain.
As a result, their risk of developing Parkinson's
disease or dementia when they grow older increases.
Parkinson's disease occurs precisely because the
group of nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine
stop working. "These patients have an inflammation
of the brain in the area where the dopamineproducing
nerve cells are found," said Morten Gersel
Stokholm from Aarhus University in Denmark.
Researchers were not previously aware that there
is a form of inflammation of the brain in patients who
are at risk of developing Parkinson's disease.
"The findings would be used to determine which
patients with the sleep disorder will later develop
Parkinson's disease. At the same time, this can also
help to develop drugs which can stop or slow the development
of the diseases," Stokholm explained.
In this study, patients with RBD and no clinical
evidence of Parkinson's and cognitive impairment
were recruited from tertiary sleep centres in Spain
and Denmark and their brain changes were analysed
using Positron emission tomography (PET).
Women are more athletic than men: Study
Agencies
TORONTO: Challenging
the popular notion that
men are more fit for exercise
of all sorts, a new
study has shown that women
have a natural capacity
to process oxygen more
quickly than men during
aerobic exercises, making
them more athletic.
The findings showed
that the faster processing
of oxygen enabled the cells
of a woman's body to undergo
less strain especially
during aerobic exercises
-- such as cardio, spinning,
running, swimming, walking,
hiking -- which require
Agencies
oxygen to help produce
energy. "The findings are
contrary to the popular
assumption that men's
bodies are more naturally
athletic," said lead author
Thomas Beltrame, Professor
at the University of Waterloo
in Ontario, Canada.
"We found that women's
muscles extract oxygen
from the blood faster,
which, scientifically speaking,
indicates a superior
aerobic system," added
Richard Hughson, another
researcher at the varsity.
NEW DELHI: Binging on organic food
is good to get rid of toxins in our bodies
but it is also important to pay attention
on what you apply on your body.
Cleansers, toners, moisturisers, oils and
serums are part of the larger skincare
regime, hence right ingredients in these
products play an equally important role,
suggest experts. Experts at SkinYoga
and Shaivya Gupta, R&D Manager at
Organic Harvest, listed few inputs:
* Regular exfoliation helps get rid of
dead skin, which in turn helps your skin
breathe and absorb other nutrients. Exfoliated
skin looks fresh and healthy.
For a 100 percent natural skin exfoliator
you can use an almond orange face
scrub.
Exfoliating also promotes a radiant
appearance by helping your skin unclog
pores and remove tanning. Olive seed
oil is considered to be great ingredient
for it. It deeply moisturises the skin and
improves hydration level of the skin. It
helps in eliminating dead skin cells and
refines the texture of the skin.
* In winters, apply malai in the
morning and wash your face with luke
warm water. You can add a pinch of organic
turmeric for the extra glow.
* Having a spoon of cow ghee or
cold pressed coconut oil every morning
moisturises the entire body including
your skin. It is a habit you can develop
over time but this will definitely show
result with softer and even skin tone in
the long run.
* Essential oils are more than just
the concentrated fragrant essence of botanicals.
Their aromatic scents, natural
healing and cleansing properties make
them a perfect supplement for your
beauty routine.
No matter what type of skin you
have, there is an essential oil that can
enhance and balance your complexion.
* If you have dry skin, apply few
drops of old pressed coconut oil over
your face and neck before going to bed.
You can indulge yourself with facial
treatment oil.
in the journal Applied
Physiology, Nutrition, and
Metabolism, compared the
oxygen uptake and muscle
oxygen extraction between
healthy and active young
men and women of similar
age and weight during a
treadmill exercise.
Women were found to
consistently outperform
men with around 30 per
cent faster oxygen handling
throughout the body
during the exercise.
These women were
also less likely to accumulate
molecules linked with
muscle fatigue, effort perception
and poor athletic
performance.
Malai, orange scrub help get softer, smoother skin
* Shea butter is a skin super food
that comes from the seeds of the fruit
of shea. The concentration of natural
vitamins and fatty acids in shea butter
makes it incredibly nourishing and
moisturising for the skin.
* Drink loads of water.
* A toner can help unclog pores as
well. It is a great addition to your beauty
regime. Neem is an excellent skin toner
that helps to reduce wrinkles and fine
lines. It also lightens dark spots making
your skin look soft and glowing.
* Eating fat rich fruit like avacado
and Omega 3 rich food like flax seed. In
short increase collagen content from inside.
* Adding a serum to your skincare
routine is crucial to healthier skin and
can make a big difference, especially
if to keep your skin bright and plump.
With daily use of serums you will have
fewer or no breakouts. Serums offer the
ultimate protection against environmental
pollution, as well as providing
your skin with instant nourishment.
* Do not forget the skin on your lips.
The skin is very sensitive and thin and
requires equal care if not more than our
face. Remember to exfoliate, moisturize
and apply sunscreen on your lips.
