FROM THE CEO
Over five decades ago, our
family founded HELP
Foundation, Inc, was just an
idea in Marietta Kelly’s and
Joanne McDonnell’s mind as
they coped with caring for their
developmentally disabled
children. But with their
perseverance and support from
their community of friends like
the Blakeslees, the Duhiggs and
countless other families, they
successfully turned their vision
of care, support and
compassion into salvation for
more than 500 men, women and
children with developmental or
intellectual disabilities that we
serve annually. As the year
comes to an end I would like to
reflect on 2017 and all the years
that got us to where we are
today. I extend my sincerest
gratitude for every donor, staff
member, volunteer and family
member who has embraced our
mission to empower. Without
you we could not continue to
expand and grow for future
generations.
While I can’t predict what the
future will hold for HELP
Foundation I have ambitious
dreams of inclusion,
acceptance, happiness and
success for every consumer in
our care. Success can look as
different as moving into a new
home, staying healthy, making a
new friend, giving back to the
community, securing a job,
participating in a community
group or volunteering.
Whatever success looks like,
it’s our role to ensure that each
and every consumer continues
to see success in their lives.
In 2017’s Annual Report, I hope
you enjoy reading about just a
few of the programs, activities
and services we provide as well
as reading about the incredible
individuals who have made
great strides towards
empowered living.

HELP is one of two agencies able to provide Discovery Services to consumers. Discovery Specialists work with job-seeking
consumers to identify a field of interest, assess skills and abilities, and find options for employment. HELP employs
two Discovery Specialists who managed 37 Discovery cases in 2016.
John L. – Discovery Success
John is a talented young man who recently graduated from Nordonia High. He had some vocational training in farming but the
program he was working in closed. John wasn’t interested in going to a day program but he wanted a job; he just wasn't sure
what he wanted to do. His parents were frustrated that he was sitting around the house, unchallenged, without a plan for his
future.
John was referred to HELP's Discovery Services. He had a lot of interests and is very personable, however he really hadn’t had
a chance to develop transferable work skills. Through the Discovery process he learned more about what he may be good at
doing and where he may need more support. John wanted to try a job that would keep him on his feet and allow him to interact
with people. One theme that Discovery explored was working in a thrift store. John likes history, shopping, and retail so this
was appealing to him. With some encouragement from his Dad and Discovery Provider, John applied at Goodwill. John learned
that he had been selected for the job and would be working with drop offs and sorting. He was excited about interacting with
customers and felt that this job would help keep him motivated.
Mike P. – Discovery Success
Mike had spent over 20 years in various vocational programs in Summit County. He did whatever was required but it was clear
to his program manager that Mike had many transferable skills to community jobs that were yet untapped. He also did not have
much confidence in his abilities and was intimidated by the thought of working in the community.
Mike was referred to Discovery while he was working at Hattie’s Assembly. One of the jobs he performed when he was in the
Hattie's program was cleaning suites at Akron Rubber Ducks stadium. Working at a baseball stadium or sports venue was a
dream of Mike’s but he wanted to do more than just cleaning up after games. He received Discovery Services and it led to a
more fully developed profile of his strengths, abilities, and personal goals. Soon he was hired to work at the concessions during
games. Mike was overjoyed! He still worked in a vocational program but now had a seasonal community job. Mike’s hard work
and skills led to him becoming a cashier, a more skilled job then he even had hoped for.
