Side Trips
Our family greeting cards made it into the
mail today. Whew!
Even my teenage son was beginning
to show concern that our messages
to friends and family
would arrive after the
holiday, but now I
can safely blame the
U.S. Postal Service if
people don’t receive
their cards. Our stack
at home increases by
just one or two each
day, but I thoroughly
enjoy each and every
one we receive.
I have recipes gathered
and grocery lists
started for the meals

we’ll be partaking in over the next week,
and I believe everyone’s favorite sweet treats
have already been baked.
We have dozens of holiday movies recorded
from the Hallmark channel, which
I plan to watch in January when it will
certainly look and feel more like Christmas
than it did this week as I was doing some
last-minute shopping in 51-degree weather.
Not complaining — it was quite wonderful!
I’m looking forward to fireworks over
West Lake Okoboji in the winter. This year
we get two chances to see them — to ring in
the new year, and again for the annual U of
O Winter Games festivities.
I’m not necessarily excited about personal
use of fireworks over Christmas and New
Year’s, but thus far it hasn’t been a problem
in our neighborhood. I think cold weather
deters people from getting too enthused
about firing off bottle rockets, Roman
candles, poppers, spinners, sparklers and
the like.
Regardless, the Parks Marina-sponsored
fireworks display should be a fun and colorful
way to usher in 2018.

Lizzy the Dream Girl to perform in Worthington Dec. 31
New Year’s Eve is a night for fun.
And the Worthington Memorial
Auditorium Performing Arts
Center is offering up some unique fun
for this coming New Year’s Eve.
It will be a night for comedy, laughs
and hypnotism.
At 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, Lizzy the
Dream Girl will take the stage and will
entertain audiences with her unique
routine.
“Lizzy has not performed in
Worthington before. We were looking
for something fun and different to do
for New Year’s Eve this year and when
I contacted GL Berg Talent Agency
from Minneapolis, they suggested
Lizzy the Dream Girl,” said Tammy
Makram, the managing director of
the Memorial Auditorium Performing
Arts Center.
Lizzy was born in Minneapolis,
MN, and grew up in a family of entertainers,
according to her website.
“As a child, she spent much of her
summer learning about and watching
stage hypnosis shows across the
country. She was always intrigued by
the power and hilarity of hypnosis,”
according to her website.
Lizzy went on to earn a degree in
psychology and a master’s in marriage
and family therapy.
“Lizzy chose to continue the family
tradition in entertainment and pursue
a career as a stage hypnotist. She has
used her knowledge and expertise to
create a hypnosis show that is unique,
funky and fresh. She believes that the
more we can smile and laugh together,
the better our lives will be, because
laughter is one of the best kinds of
therapy,” according to the site.
In addition to the entertainment
with Lizzy on stage at 7 p.m., there
will also be other entertainment before
and after the show.
“We added something extra by having
local music talent Tommy Binford
with his musical partner, Aunt Bea, —
who together form the band Fishin’
for Olives — to do music in the lobby
both before the show and for a New
Year’s Eve party reception after the
show,” Makram said. “It will be a lot
of fun!”
The goal of Makram when planning
the New Year’s Eve entertainment was
for people to enjoy themselves and
have fun.
“We decided to do the show on
New Year’s Eve because it’s New Year’s
Eve. It will be a fun way to ring in
the new year with laughter,” Makram
said. “We know people will leave this
performance feeling like they had
an entertaining evening and lots of
laughs.” F

Little Swan Lake Winery and New Year’s Eve is
no exception.
The end-of-year party will feature such noted

all night.
The party gets going at 8 p.m. and goes until
the clock strikes midnight and the calendar
turns to a new year.
As per usual guests will leave the party full and
happy as a bison rib meal with all the fixin’s is
on the menu for the night.
Until its time to close the doors on 2017, everyone
is encouraged to have a good time, enjoy
a great meal with friends and family, dance the
night away, make a resolution or two, try to sing
a line or two of “Auld Lang Syne” and welcome

The Gardens hosts first-ever fireworks spectacular
Fireworks lighting up the night
sky is a pretty common sight in
the Iowa Great Lakes. At least it is
during the summer months. Dazzling
displays are much more rare when the
weather turns cold.
Parks Marina is planning on changing
that with the first-ever New Year’s
Eve Fireworks Spectacular.
“We’re very excited to have our first
New Year’s Eve fireworks out on West
Lake in front of The Gardens and
Hi-Point,” said Jeff Thee, a marketing
staff member at Parks Marina.
Taking place at The Gardens and
Hi-Point in the Central Emporium,
the holiday party will present plenty
of opportunities for revelry leading up
to the ringing in of the new year.
The evening gets going at 6 p.m.
but guests can also enjoy late seating
all night at the Hi-Point with surf
and turf specials of prime rib, crab
legs and more. A fantastic fine dining
experience leading up to a fireworks
show with some of the best views in
the house will certainly be a unique
experience. Reservations are recommended
for Hi-Point.
Downstairs will be a more casual
dining experience at The Gardens,
where the band Candy Shop will take
the stage at 9 p.m. leading up to a
balloon drop at midnight with the
fireworks display coordinated by J&M
Displays beginning just minutes later.
Both venues will also include a

Calico Skies hosts Sparkling Wine Festival
At Calico Skies Vineyards and
Winery on New Year’s Eve it’s all
about the sparkle.
From the decorations to the wine
sitting on the table. It’s all sparkling.
This is the seventh year that Calico
Skies has hosted their New Year’s Eve
Sparkle Celebration and this year
things will kick off from 4-8 p.m. on
Sunday, Dec. 31. The cost of the event
is $50 per person and tickets must be
purchased by Dec. 25.
Last year was the first year that the
celebration featured sparkling wines
made right there at the winery.
“That’s the big thing this year, our
first year with our own sparkling
wine,” owner and winemaker Will
Kimberley said last year. “It’s a big
deal for us and will be a big part of the
evening.”
The evening will feature six different
sparkling wines that have all been
paired with courses by Chef Tim at
Empire Hy-Vee.
The first course will feature Blanc
De Gris wine which will be paired
with a meringue chip, thinly sliced
apple topped with a pecan drizzle and
toasted pecans.
And that’s just the first course.
It gets even yummier from there.
There will also be Rose Del Sol
paired with a trio of cheeses with
charcuterie meat, Blanc De Blanc
paired with banana chip with a
tropical fruit compote, Shoreline
paired with coconut shrimp with a
pineapple citrus sauce, Marquette
Rose with a homemade Bing Bar, and
Moto paired with a grilled chicken
skewer drizzed with cranberry sauce

Bridal & Party Showcase to take place Sunday, Jan. 7
If you are planning a wedding in N’West Iowa
or the Iowa Great Lakes then the Bridal and
Party Showcase might be your one-stop-shop for
checking off everything on your to-do list.
Once again this year MORE 104.9 is hosting its
annual vendor fair on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, from
1-4:30 p.m. at the Clay County Regional Event
Center. While this is mainly for people planning
their wedding in N’West Iowa, it’s also an event for
anyone who is throwing a party.
“We’ll have around 45-65 vendors roughly from
all over the region including anyone who specializes
in products and services used in weddings or
for parties like transportation, florists, catering, tuxedos,
gowns, decorators and reception venues,” said
Kevin Tlam, operations manager at MORE 104.9.
This will be the 12th year for the event.
“It’s hard to believe we’ve been doing this for 12
years. It started as a small event but the response was
phenomenal and we learned a lot that first year,” Tlam
said. “The next year we moved into the big area of the
event center and more than doubled our space.”
In addition to being able to check out a number
of vendors, brides and their parties, as well as all
other guests for the show, will also get a chance to
win a number of prizes.
“We always offer a bunch of prizes that we give
away. A lot of our vendors put up prizes with a
minimum value of $25,” Tlam said. “We’ll be giving
almost $1,000 in prizes away throughout the
afternoon.”
In addition to registering to win prizes, you can
also register for a chance to take a turn inside the
radio station’s Cash Cube. A few names will be
drawn throughout the afternoon and those people
will have a chance to win $500 cash by grabbing as
much cash as they can in 40 seconds.
The event usually averages around 400-450 people.
And Tlam said they are seeing more and more
men coming to the event.
“It’s a big event because a lot of future brides
bring their mom or friends and make an afternoon
of it, but more and more brides are bringing their
fiances. They want to plan their big day together,”
Tlam said.
Another trend that Tlam has noticed is the desire
for brides and grooms to try to do something different
and unique at their wedding.
“The big trend right now is everybody really
wants to personalize their wedding and make it
unique. I’ve been hearing a lot of stories about
people doing things at ceremonies or receptions to
try to be really creative and stand out,” Tlam said.
“The vendors at the fair will have great ideas for
those looking to personalize their wedding. They
can pick the vendors’ brains for ideas.”
